Where do competitors go wrong before a big Jiu-Jitsu event? We asked the black belt champion Rafael Dallinha, Brazilian professor in California, and he made a list so you don’t make any more mistakes – whether you’re an elite athlete or a beginner in tournaments and sports competitions. Oss!

1. Cutting weight irresponsibly

Many athletes try to lose too much weight in the final days before the competition, which can harm both physical and mental performance. This includes extreme dehydration, prolonged fasting, or excessive sauna use.

2. Overtraining

Trying to compensate for anxiety by training too much can lead to fatigue, injury, and decreased performance. The body needs time to recover — especially during the week of the competition.

3. Neglecting rest and sleep

Poor sleep in the days leading up to the tournament directly affects focus, reflexes, and decision-making during the match.

4. Not simulating real match situations

Many athletes only do regular sparring and don’t simulate competition conditions like timed rounds, scoring, specific federation rules, or facing different fighting styles.

5. Failing to prepare mentally and emotionally

Ignoring anxiety control, self-confidence, and focus can cause the athlete to “freeze” during the match. A weak mental game is often the biggest enemy of performance.

Nossa escola, a Rada Jiu-Jitsu, estava na mesma localização há dez anos, em La Jolla, na Califórnia. 

Sabíamos que era preciso mudar e ampliar, para o conforto dos alunos. Mas foi preciso esperar o momento certo até achar o lugar ideal, que me agradasse 100%. 

Quando uma escola muda de endereço, há muitas outras variáveis em jogo. Primeiro, é primordial o professor estar preparado financeiramente. É preciso ter caixa extra para ao menos um ano, por segurança. 

Também é imprescindível escolher uma escola perto da antiga, a fim de evitar uma perda sensível de alunos. Se você muda para uma área muito distante, o risco de perder seus clientes será maior. 

Somos hoje a maior academia de Jiu-Jitsu de La Jolla, então era fundamental que eu me mantivesse na região em que me estabeleci. Somos bem conhecidos na comunidade e temos um certo prestígio pelo trabalho que fazemos por aqui. 

Claro que, como o Jiu-Jitsu nos ensina, muitas vezes é necessário arriscar. Porém, o que mais contou para mim nessa mudança de dojo foi estar financeiramente saudável para fazer o investimento. Saímos de um lugar pequeno para um espaço três vezes maior, e isso dá a maior satisfação.

O que o professor deve saber é que quase nunca existe o lugar perfeito, mas o que escolhemos me satisfaz. Sou um cara detalhista e a nova versão da academia Rada Jiu-Jitsu foi planejada passo a passo. Todo faixa-preta acaba tendo uma mente perfeccionista, e eu procuro profissionalizar o nosso ambiente e o serviço prestado para os alunos. 

Os valores do Jiu-Jitsu foram essenciais durante todo o processo de mudança, mas o que fala mais alto, quase sempre, é a determinação. 

Foi uma negociação complicada que durou nove meses, até que as duas partes cederam para chegarmos a um acordo. Em certos momentos, achei que o negócio não fosse sair. Mas a força interior não me deixou desistir. Oficializamos a mudança em janeiro e tivemos um crescimento expressivo no número de alunos, o que me deixou muito feliz. Para ser sincero, a academia já está ficando pequena, o que é bom: temos planos para expandir o local ou inaugurar outro na região.

Sou grato a todas as pessoas que estiveram ao meu lado durante a transição porque foi um grande desafio. Gastei bastante dinheiro para renovar a escola, mas já comecei a colher os frutos. Eu visualizei a academia, redesenhei o espaço diversas vezes até ter certeza que estava perto do ideal. 

A mudança de ares me deixa com mais vontade de trabalhar. Nossa academia tem crescido bastante, e a determinação que afiamos no Jiu-Jitsu segue sendo a chave para prosperar. Oss…

Our school, Rada Jiu-Jitsu, had been in the same location for ten years, in La Jolla, California. 

We knew it was necessary to change and expand, for the comfort of the students. But we had to wait for the right time to find the ideal place that I liked 100%. 

When a school changes its address, there are many other variables at play. First, it is essential for the teacher to be financially prepared. It is necessary to have extra cash for at least one year, just to be on the safe side. 

It is also essential to choose a school close to the old one in order to avoid a noticeable loss of students. If you move to an area too far away, the risk of losing your clients will be greater. 

We are now the largest Jiu-Jitsu academy in La Jolla, so it was crucial for me to stay in the area where I was established. We are well known in the community and have a certain prestige for the work we do around here. 

Of course, as Jiu-Jitsu teaches us, you often have to take risks. However, what counted the most for me in this change of dojo was being financially healthy enough to make the investment. We went from a small place to a space three times bigger, and this gives me the greatest satisfaction.

What the teacher should know is that there is almost never a perfect place, but the one we chose is satisfactory. I am a detail oriented guy, and the new version of the Rada Jiu-Jitsu academy was planned step by step. Every black belt ends up having a perfectionist mind, and I try to professionalize our environment and the service provided to the students. 

The Jiu-Jitsu values were essential during the whole change process, but what speaks louder, almost always, is determination.

It was a complicated negotiation that lasted nine months, until both parties gave in to reach an agreement. At certain moments I thought that the deal would not go through. But the inner strength didn’t let me give up. We made the move official in January, and already 50 more students have come. To be honest, the gym is already getting small, which is good: we have plans to expand the location or open another one in the region.

I am grateful to all the people who were by my side during the transition because it was a big challenge. I spent a lot of money to renovate the school, but I have already started to reap the rewards. I visualized the gym, redesigned the space several times until I was sure it was close to the ideal. 

The change of scenery makes me feel more like working. Our academy has grown a lot, and the determination we have sharpened in Jiu-Jitsu continues to be the key to prosper. Oss…

Black belt Clark Gracie, 28, has already demonstrated the value of his sharp guard since the No-Gi Worlds last year, when he lost a close match against DJ Jackson in the final.

Earlier this year, some missteps. But everything would become just stairs to the top of Pan 2013. In Irvine, Calif. this past Sunday, the son of Carley reached the biggest title of his career, in a middleweight infested with superstars with many styles, from Leandro Lo to Kayron, from DJ Jackson to Otavio Sousa.

In the absolute, he had already shone and almost surprised Leo Nogueira. The fight ended with Clark on the back of the super heavyweight champion from Alliance.

“Having the Gracie name on the birth certificate is not easy … The guy has to kill a lion a day,” said Clark, shortly before action in Irvine.

The black belt born in California explained the reasons for his progress this season:

“My preparation has been better than ever. This year I’m taking it more seriously, training with a coach, while training Jiu-Jitsu stronger every day. Furthermore, I teach as well. I spend the whole day on the mat and it helps at the last minute,” said the versatile fighter. In the final of the Pan, Clark saw Marcelo Lapela pull for his guard, but he was undeterred. He put pressure to pass at the last minute and got the submission, an omoplata choke.

“If it was easy it wouldn’t be fun,” philosophized the ace. “But that’s it, my goal is always try to submit everyone. Sometimes we can do it, sometimes we can’t.”

On Monday, professor Clark came back enshrined to his students at the gym in La Jolla, Calif. With an eye on the ideas of family, he not only teaches the techniques that work in competitions; he also likes to teach many self-defense techniques, including kicks and stand-up defenses.

O faixa-preta Clark Gracie, 28 anos, já vinha demonstrando o valor de sua guarda afiada desde o Mundial Sem Kimono do ano passado, quando perdeu apertado para DJ Jackson na final.

No início do ano, alguns tropeços. Mas tudo seria apenas degraus na escalada para o topo do Pan 2013. Em Irvine, nesse domingo, o filho de Carley chegou ao maior título da carreira, num peso médio infestado de  craques dos mais diversos estilos, de Leandro Lo a Kayron, de DJ Jackson a Otavio Sousa.

No absoluto, ele já tinha se engraçado e quase apronta para cima de Léo Nogueira. A luta terminou com Clark nas costas do campeão superpesado da Alliance.

“Carregar o nome Gracie na certidão de nascimento não é nada fácil”, brinca o rei das omoplatas. “O sujeito tem que matar um leão por dia”, comentou Clark, pouco antes das ações em Irvine.

O faixa-preta nascido na Califórnia explicou as razões de seu progresso nesta temporada.

“Minha preparação está sendo melhor que nunca. Este ano estou levando mais a sério, treinando com um preparador físico, sem deixar de treinar Jiu-Jitsu forte todos os dias. Além disso dou aulas também. Passo o dia inteiro no tatame e isso ajuda na hora H”, lembrou o lutador versátil. Na grande final do Pan, inclusive, Clark viu Marcelo Lapela puxar para a guarda, mas não se intimidou: botou pressão para passar e no último minuto obteve a finalização, um estrangulamento com a omoplata encaixada.

“Se fosse fácil não teria graça”, filosofa a fera. “Mas é isso, meu objetivo é sempre o de tentar finalizar todo mundo. Tem lutas que a gente consegue, outras não”.

Nesta segunda, o professor Clark volta consagrado para seus aluninhos na academia em La Jolla. De olho nas ideias da família, ele não apenas ensina as técnicas que funcionam em competições. Ele também gosta de passar muita defesa pessoal, inclusive chutes e defesas em pé.
