A pupil of Grandmaster Carlson Gracie and a Pride FC veteran, last weekend Paulão Filho made his return to mixed martial arts.

At 39, having behind him controversy and personal problems that caused him to withdraw from the sport, he entered the cage for Wawan MMA in Kuwait.

Fighting for the organization’s heavyweight belt, Paulão faced Egypt’s Mohamed Ashraf. Paulão notched a reasonably safe win with a choke. You can watch him here:

Conhecido aluno do grande mestre Carlson Gracie e veterano do extinto Pride, Paulão Filho conseguiu reunir suas forças e adentrar mais uma vez no cage de MMA.

Aos 39 anos, após polêmicas e problemas pessoais que o afastaram do esporte, o casca-grossa entrou em ação no Wawan MMA, no Kuwait, no último final de semana.

Em disputa pelo cinturão peso pesado da organização, Paulão encarou o egípcio Mohamed Ashraf. Para liquidar a fatura, Paulão usou seu afiado Jiu-Jitsu e estrangulou sem maiores problemas.

Organização de MMA que promete agitar o Oriente Médio, mais precisamente a Jordânia, é batizada e tem data remarcada. O Desert Force Championship (DFC) acontece no dia 19 de novembro com cinco lutas internacionais e mais cinco com atletas locais. Devem participar atletas da Jordânia, Emirados Árabes, EUA, Holanda, Austrália, Arábia Saudita, Kuwait, Bahrein, Egito, Síria, Líbano e Palestina.

“Já fazíamos o Capital Challenge, que tem grande identidade com o Jiu-Jitsu. Usaremos essa identidade em eventos futuros da arte suave”, explica nosso GMA Zaid Mirza sobre a mudança no nome da organização de MMA.

“Dsert Force é o nome que decidimos para este evento de MMA, inspirado pela grande maioria do Oriente Médio. O povo do deserto é conhecido por suportar condições difíceis e sacrifícios, assim como os lutadores de MMA. Queremos mostrar ao mundo o poder do povo dessa região”, completa Mirza, que também lança a Liga de Lutas do Oriente Médio (MEFL, em inglês).

A intenção é, no futuro, realizar eventos uma vez por mês e lançar talentos da região para lutar em grandes organizações como UFC, Dream, Strikeforce e o próprio DFC.

“A primeira apresentação terá lugar no Cairo, Egito, em janeiro de 2011. O cage da MEFL vai girar todos os países árabes e do Oriente Médio”, revela Mirza.

An MMA organization promising to shake up the Middle East, more specifically Jordan, has come to be and has a date for its maiden event. Desert Force Championship (DFC) is set for November 19 with five international bouts and another five between local athletes. Athletes from Jordan, the UAE, USA, Holland, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are expected on the card.

“We already did Capital Challenge, which is greatly identified with Jiu-Jitsu. We will use this identity in future gentle art events,” explains Zaid Mirza about the MMA organization’s name change.

“Desert Force is the name we decided on for this MMA event, inspired by the vast majority of the Middle East. The people of the desert are known for bearing difficult conditions and sacrifices, as are MMA fighters. We want to show the world the power of the people of this region,” adds Mirza, who is also launching Midde East Fight League (MEFL).

The aim is to, in the future, hold events once a month and launch talent from the region into major organizations like the UFC, Dream, Strikeforce and the DFC itself.

“The first show will take place in Cairo, Egypt, in January 2011. The MEFL cage will go around all the Arab countries of the Middle East,” reveals Mirza.

Despite the scathing temperatures in the region, Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the Middle East are having a lively summer. Professor Sylvio Behring just took off from Kuwait, where he spent a week conducting seminars at the country’s Gracie Barra academy. At almost the same time Sylvio was in Kuwait, Royce Gracie and José Mario Sperry arrived in the United Arab Emirates, both with seminars scheduled in the city of Dubai.

Speaking of Kuwait, an event promising to set a new baseline is the tournament promote in d by Ahmed Alhouli, a Vinicius “Draculino” student, and the man responsible for Gracie Barra promises worthy prizes for the championship to take place August 6 in the country’s capital.

Meanwhile in Jordan, Zaid Mirza is organizing a tournament for kids in the region up to the age of 15. “We’ll receive youths from Lebanon, Syria and perhaps the Emirates.” Among the prizes, there will even be playstations for the young ones. Zaid further points out that Pedro Galiza will oversee a summer Jiu-Jitsu camp in Syria at the end of the month: “Galiza should spur the sport further ahead in Syria, but he also has projects in Egypt and Lebanon in the works for this year.”

And, in the consecrated capital of professional Jiu-Jitsu, Abu Dhabi, a group of local schoolboys are in the dependencies of the ADCC during their summer break getting ready for a Jiu-Jitsu presentation in China at the end of August.

Today he was at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club to check out the training of Emirates Team and took the chance to give some pointers to the team led by Carlão Santos.

Royce was invited to teach seminars on an American base in the Persian Gulf and then for the army of Kuwait. After these two commitments he should return to the Arab Emirates for a seminar in Dubai.

So, what are these great battles about to take place?” It’s worth remembering how during the same week of April we’ll have, in Abu Dhabi, an historic UFC event and the 2^nd World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup. April promises to be a truly hot week in the desert.

Ele esteve hoje na sede do Abu Dhabi Combat Club para dar um confere nos treinos do Emirates Team e aproveitou pra dar uma palinha pra equipe comandada pro Carlão Santos.

Royce foi convidado para seminários numa base americana no Golfo Pérsico e depois numa base do exército nacional do Kuwait. Após estes dois compromissos, deve voltar aos Emirados Árabes para um seminário em Dubai.

Bem, mas quais seriam os “grandes combates a serem travados?” Não custa lembrar que na mesma semana de abril teremos, em Abu Dhabi, uma edição histórica do UFC e o 2º World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup, a copa profissional de Jiu-Jitsu. Abril promete ser realmente um mês quente no deserto.
