The 2016/2017 season of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour came to an end with another event for the books, this time in London, UK. Big names in the black belt division travelled to England to compete for their share in more than US$ 100,000. Not only the black belt, but all divisions gifted the crowd at the Excel London arena and around the world with thrilling matches filled with tons of heart and the finest technical skills displayed by more than 800 athletes from 59 different countries. Here’s a brief description of how each weight class played out in the black belt division.

ADULT MALE

62KG – Hiago George kept his crown and won his third gold medal in five events this season, In London, Hiago fought three times. First he outscored Michael Woolf 10-0 in the quarterfinals. The next step was a 2-0 win over Rodnei Junior in the semifinals. The gold medal rested in Hiago’s chest after he was able to reach full mount and put a triangle choke in place to finish Erno Elgland in the final.

69KG – The bracket became wide open when the reigning champion Isaque Paiva was disqualified for not arriving at the venue in time. Italo Lins took the opportunity and in three matches climbed to the highest point of the podium. He first finished Nelson Teixeira with a choke from the back in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he beat Maximiliano Campos by points. The final put Italo against Victor Martins and a sweep was enough to put him ahead 2-0 in the scoreboard and secure the title.

77kg – Talison Costa had one of the hardest paths to the gold medal in the black belt division. He fought four times in London. First he beat Jacob Mackenzie by points, then he outscored Krzystof Suchorabski. In the semifinal, a tough match against Ross Nichols was decided only by the referees. The final match put Italo against Ilke Bulut and a 2-0 lead was enough for Lins to secure the title.

85kg – Charles Negromonte fought twice to reach the gold medal. First he caught Faisal Al Kitbe with an armlock. Then he met up with Santeri Lilus in the final. The gold medal came Negromonte’s way after he reached full mount and choked Lilus, forcing him to tap.

Ane Nunes/Gentle Art Media

94kg – Xande Ribeiro won his third gold medal in five Grand Slam events this season with two submissions in two matches in London. He debuted with a choke from the back on Jackson Sousa in the semifinal. The gold medal match put Xande against Poland’s Adam Wardzinski, in a replay of the final at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi. This time, Xande did not hold back and quickly made to Adam’s back to finish with a bow and arrow choke.

110kg – Jose Junior and Gabriel Arges fought for the gold medal, but also for the lead in the UAEJJF’s annual athlete’s ranking. Arges moved up two weight divisions to try to steal the lead out of Junior’s hands. Unfortunately for Gabriel, Junior was on fire, debuting in the semifinals with a 17-0 blowout on Antonio Junior. Arges made his way to the gold medal match with a 2-0 lead over the always tough Gabriel Lucas. The title and the lead in the ranking remained with Junior after a win in the final for the slim margin of one penalty put him ahead of Arges at the end of a very close final match.

BROWN/BLACK FEMALE

55KG – In a single match, Vanessa English kept the gold medal with the home country after a 3-2 lead on advantages was the edge over Brazil’s Mayra Abrahão.

62kg – Luiza Monteiro fought twice to win the gold medal and the cash prize. First she caught Maria Asensi with a leg lock and then outscored Cornelia Rossier 9-2 in the final.

Ane Nunes/Gentle Art Media

70kg – Ana Carolina Vieira won her third gold medal in five events this season with a single match campaign. Merciless, the Brazilian took Samantha Cook’s back and quickly found a choke to secure the title.

90kg – Nathiely de Jesus also had to fight only once in London to win her fourth gold medal in five events this season. She worked her way to mount Jessica Silva and transitioned to an armbar that meant the end of the match.

Keenan Cornelius finalizou Melksedec Franco no braço

Boa sorte.
The post Seleção para ensinar Jiu-Jitsu em Abu Dhabi chega ao Rio first appeared on Graciemag.

You, Jiu-Jitsu teachers in Brazil, may well be whooping it up at Carnival. Now I don’t mean to interrupt the merriment, but I’ll cut dryly to the chase: job opportunities, and paying good salaries.

I just got off the phone with my friend Lubomir Guedjev, a representative of Palm Sports, an Abu Dhabi company that will be carrying out the teacher selection process tomorrow and the day after (February 22 and 23) in São Paulo and on the 25th and 26th in Rio de Janeiro.

Lubo is flying over to Brazil today along with Brazilians José Junior, otherwise known as “Ciência,” and Perlin Nunes, the delegation’s female representative. They’re enthused about the task at hand: selecting 45 teachers to head Jiu-Jitsu classes at public schools in the United Arab Emirates. There are already 80 teachers over there doing just that.

To help you out, I sought to find out what the interviews will be like, but Lubo was categorical: “I can’t tell you; it’s a wild card I’ll be using. They need to know English and Jiu-Jitsu; the rest they’ll find out when the time comes.”

Despite the veil of secrecy that usually surrounds recruitment, there’s one thing I can tell you up front: you’re not going to need to train with anyone nor demonstrate your techniques in the hotel lobby. It’ll be all on theory, so no need to take your gi. Just show you’re organized by downloading the application and bringing it with you all filled out, with a photo, as well as any certificates or diplomas you may have.

Hint: Use that confidence Jiu-Jitsu bestowed on you starting at white belt all the way to black. And think positive. Your dream of working in the Middle East may be closer to coming true than you may think.

Following a solid showing at the World Pro in and out of the gi, when he overcame the likes of Lúcio Lagarto, Rafael Lovato and Gilbert Durinho, this week heavyweight José Junior’s participation in the next ADCC was confirmed by the event’s promoters.

“The Scientist”, as he is known in Jiu-Jitsu circles, is 25 and lives in Abu Dhabi, where he works for Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s project teaching Jiu-Jitsu at schools around the UAE capital.

Before representing Emirates Team in the over-99 kg division at the September ADCC in Nottingham, England, the “Scientist” will make the most of some vacation time away from the Emirates by training hard with Roberto Gordo in Rio de Janeiro.

“Here in Abu Dhabi I have a lot of daily training, but as the teachers will be going on holiday, I’m going to take the chance to visit Brazil and put in some serious prep work at Gracie Fusion,” said the fighter, who will have opposite him on the mat beasts like Fabricio Werdum, Jeff Monson, Roberto Cyborg and Braga Neto. “I’m not going to England just to make things hard on people, I want to be champion,” warns the heavyweight, sporting the classic pair of glasses that gave rise to his nickname.
The post Brazilian living in Abu Dhabi to compete at ADCC first appeared on Graciemag.

Lucio “Lagarto” Rodrigues put the internet aside in Abu Dhabi during the World Pro 2011. Was he afraid it would distract him? That’s not it. He explains: “The internet at the hotel cost fifty dollars for five days,” the Gracie Barra teacher living in England said with a grin.

Lagarto had a sterling campaign in conquering the over-92-kg division, overcoming the likes of Xande Ribeiro and Marcus Bochecha, a big established name and an up-and-coming star, respectively.

In three quick questions, the fierce but friendly athlete told GRACIEMAG.com what it was that made the difference for him and compared Roger Gracie to a three-dimensional television. Check it out:

What was the mood at the championship like in Abu Dhabi?

Not just in my fights, but I felt that everyone was fighting like it were the final of the World Championship right from the very first fight! At the start of the competition my Japanese opponent was a no-show for the first match. So, right off the bat, none other than Xande Ribeiro stepped up to fight me. In the semifinal I faced José Junior, who lives here in Abu Dhabi. Besides being a young buck full of energy, he also had that advantage, that he was fighting at home. I won, and to finish I had to face Bochecha. So it was really rough!

You’ve been training with Roger Gracie a lot in England. What has changed in your Jiu-Jitsu?

Roger knows so much and is super simple – just like his Jiu-Jitsu. He has a broader vision than the others do. He’s not normal, I’m serious! Let’s just say he’s a 3D wireless TV with Blu-Ray, and the rest of us are old black-and-whites (laughs). I’m laughing but it’s serious. And by training I’m trying to be at least a color TV. I’ll be happy with that, and that’s above average.
The post Lagarto aims to be a “color TV” first appeared on Graciemag.

Not having set foot on the mat of a major Jiu-Jitsu tournament since losing a submission grappling match to João Assis last June, Alexandre Ribeiro again put his gentle art skills to the test last weekend, at the World Pro No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu contest, securing gold in the over-92 kg division.

“Thank God I managed to get the rust off and fight okay. Truth is, I haven’t been training without the gi at all and I felt a lack of pace, but I managed to impose my game and do well at weight. I messed up in the absolute, got a dumb advantage point scored against me and couldn’t rally back in time. It’s really not a good idea to fall behind in score with a six-minute match duration,” the two-time absolute world champion told GRACIEMAG.com.

“This No-Gi competition served to warm up my engines for the Gi event. The way I see it, nobody there was really sharp at No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu; I think all of them had trained to compete in the gi,” he adds.

That being the case, the greatest excitement in Abu Dhabi is yet to come, when the folks really get down to doing what they wen there to do.

“There’s sure to be plenty of excitement this weekend!” he predicts.

“I’m really confident. I trained a lot of Jiu-Jitsu and judo and had a strong training camp in Oklahoma with Rafael Lovato. He’s all set to go too. I’m already getting used to the climate and getting over the jetlag, so I think I’ll have some good matches,” says Ribeiro in closing.

Stay tuned to GRACIEMAG.com for all the goings-on in Abu Dhabi.
The post Xande confident in Abu Dhabi: “There’ll be plenty of excitement!” first appeared on Graciemag.
