Yesterday, the television network MBC, the biggest in the Arab world and owned by the Saudi royal family, announced that it has come to an agreement with the Desert Force MMA promotion. Desert Force is a Jordan-based event where Jiu-Jitsu black belts Cristiano Marcello and Jorge Michelan, as well as France’s Anthony Rea and others, have fought in the past. The promoters’ aim, though, is to farm talent from the region and launch them in the international MMA market.

“Our objective has been to draw a greater and greater audience to our event, thus channeling expectations onto local Arab heroes of the sport. Our region is in need of more entertainment, and MMA has become more and more popular around here. We couldn’t have hoped for a better partner, as MBC reaches 200 million households in 22 Arabic-speaking nations. That’s a giant media segment,” stated the promoter and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Zaid Mirza, a native of the Brazilian capital of Brasilia based in Jordan.

The next Desert Force event will take place on the 7th of September, just after the month of Ramadan. It will be broadcast on the MBC Action channel, specializing in action movies and radical sports, to an audience of around 58 million people, according to the network. At the channel’s behest, the tournament featuring the Arab fighters and those of Arab descent through to the final phase will pick up again.

One of the participants is Southern Brazilian brown belt Gabriel Tayeh, who will be representing Palestine: “This is great news. The exposure it will give the fighters will be huge. That will draw more sponsors and fans,” said Gabriel, before hopping a plane to Rio de Janeiro to carry on training at X-Gym and Team Nogueira.

O Desert Force é um evento com sede na Jordânia, onde já lutaram os faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu Cristiano Marcello e Jorge Michelan, além do francês Anthony Rea e muitos outros. A meta do show, no entanto, é descobrir talentos da região e lançá-los no mercado internacional de MMA.

“Nosso objetivo tem sido atrair mais e mais público para o nosso evento, e assim canalizar as expectativas em torno dos ídolos árabes locais do esporte. Nossa região necessita de entretenimento, e o MMA mostra-se cada vez mais popular aqui também. Não poderíamos ter uma parcerra melhor, já que a rede MBC alcança 200 milhões de lares nos 22 países de língua árabe, é uma gigante do setor de mídia”, salienta o organizador e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Zaid Mirza, um brasiliense radicado na Jordânia.

O próximo Desert Force deve ocorrer no dia 7 de setembro, logo após o mês do Ramadan. Será transmitido pelo canal MBC Action, especializado em filmes de ação e esportes radicais, com uma audiência de cerca de 58 milhões de pessoas segundo a emissora. Por imposição do canal, porém, o torneio de árabes e descendentes que se encontrava nas fases finais vai recomeçar.

Um dos participantes é o gaúcho faixa-marrom Gabriel Tayeh, que luta representando a Palestina: “Essa é uma ótima notícia, a exposição agora será gigante para os lutadores. Isso vai atrair patrocinadores e mais fãs”, disse Gabriel, antes de embarcar para o Rio de Janeiro para incrementar os treinamentos na X-Gym e no Team Nogueira.

Another chapter of the Middle Eastern event Desert Force was held in Jordan this Friday, with Brazil’s Jorge “Michelan” Bezerra taking on tough Dutchman Djamil Chan. Michelan put on a Jiu-Jitsu clinic when he pulled guard, swept and finished his opponent with a tight armbar.

“I was called on at the last minute to substitute Pedro Galiza, who got injured while in Brasilia, and I went for it,” said the Léo Vieira student already with 20 MMA fights under his belt.

The objective behind Desert Force is to scout new MMA heroes for the populations of Arab countries and their descendents. This latest event showed clear signs the promoters are on the right path, as the fights were high level, not to mention dramatic.

The most heavily anticipated fight of the night was between Jordan’s Hashem Arkhagha and Egypt’s Mahmoud Salama. The favoritism enjoyed by the Jordanian almost fell by the wayside at the hands of the Egyptian athlete. However, early in the second round Hashem scored a takedown, moved to mount and finished up with an armbar, to then rush to the arms of the delirious fans.

Another Brazilian who has been carving out a place for himself in the Middle Eastern MMA scene is Gabriel Tayeh, a brown belt from Sul Jiu-Jitsu of Palestinian parentage, who faced the Frenchman of Tunisian origins Bechir Majri. Gabriel dominated the first round by taking Bechir down repeatedly, but the Tunisian was up to speed with his defenses and landed a spot-on knee as the Brazilian was shooting for a takedown, causing the referee to step in.

And there are two more Arabs who put in solid appearances and are ready to be launched into the international scenes are now the light heavyweight finalists: Syria’s Khalid Walid, and Tunisia-Holland transplant Sami Antar.

O evento árabe Desert Force que ocorreu na última sexta-feira, na Jordânia, teve o brasileiro Jorge “Michelan” Bezerra enfrentando o duro holandês Djamil Chan. Michelan deu uma aula de Jiu-Jitsu ao puxar o adversário para a guarda, raspá-lo e finalizar num justo armlock.

“Fui chamado na última hora pra substituir o Pedro Galiza, que se contundiu em Brasília, e caí pra dentro”, vibrou o paulista aluno de Léo Vieira, já com 20 lutas de MMA nas costas.

O Desert Force manteve o objetivo de buscar novos ídolos no MMA entre a população dos países árabes e descendentes dos mesmos. O evento deu sinais de estar trilhando o caminho correto, pois as lutas foram de alto nível, para não dizer dramáticas.

A luta mais esperada da noite foi entre o jordaniano Hashem Arkhagha e o egípcio Mahmoud Salama. O favoritismo do jordaniano quase sucumbiu diante da garra do atleta do Egito. Porém, no início do segundo round, Hashem botou para baixo, montou e finalizou no braço para quase desmaiar nos braços da torcida.

Outro brasileiro que vinha se destacando, mas dentro do evento árabe por ser descendente de palestinos é o faixa-marrom da Sul Jiu-Jitsu Gabriel Tayeh, que enfrentou o francês de origem tunisiana Bechir Majri.  Gabriel dominou o primeiro round botando Bechir várias vezes pra baixo, porém o tunisiano mostrou um bom bloqueio e aproveitou o segundo round para aplicar uma certeira joelhada quando o brasileiro tentava um single-leg, levando o árbitro a interromper o combate.

Outros dois árabes que fizeram boas apresentações e podem ser lançados no cenário internacional são  os agora finalistas da categoria até 92kg, o sírio Khalid Walid e o tunisiano radicado na Holanda Sami Antar. Veja os resultados completos.

A sexta-feira é de MMA em Brasília, com o WOCS 13, no ginásio Nilson Nelson. Para agitar o público, o grand prix define o campeão 83kg da organização, mas muitos outros combates prometem, como o entre Rodrigo Ratinho, que encara Heliovanio da Silva.

“Treinei muito com os meus professores e companheiros, acho que será uma grande luta e com certeza estarei preparado para o confronto. O público de Brasília pode esperar o que sempre tento apresentar em meus combates, muita agressividade e não deixar o resultado nas mãos dos juízes. Se Deus quiser, conseguirei a vitória para disputar o cinturão do WOCS em Julho”, comenta a revelação Ratinho.

As lutas do GP também foram sorteadas, Arthur Gogó encara Julio Cesar, enquanto Jorge Michelan enfrenta Marcelo Bad Boy.

Depois de definir os campeões 77kg e 66kg com dois GPs eletrizantes, o WOCS 13 chega a Brasília para trazer muita emoção.

Dessa vez, vai ser definido o melhor da organização no peso 83kg, em mais um grand prix. Em ação, vão estar as feras Arthur Gogó, Jorge Michelan, Julio Cesar e Marcelo Bad Boy. O casamento dos combates é no dia da pesagem.

Além de atletas locais do Distrito Federal, o que promete agitar o público, é grande a expectativa para a luta com uma das grandes revelações do MMA nacional, o campeão Rodrigo Ratinho, que encara Heliovanio da Silva.

“Agora chegou a vez de botarmos para quebrar em Brasília. O WOCS levou nas últimas semanas o melhor do MMA a diversos pontos do país e prometemos ainda muito mais nesta temporada”, comenta Phillip Lima, organizador do show ao lado de Tatá Duarte.

O dia 8 de dezembro foi histórico em Amã, na Jordânia, com o Desert Force Fight Championship, com presença ilustre da família real com os príncipes Hachem Bin Hussein e Hussein Mirza.

Por lá esteve o empresário André Bottino, responsável pelo lutador Marcos Marquez, americano de origem mexicana que enfrentou o brasileiro Bruno Carvalho, e conta um pouco dessa experiência:

“A organização foi impecável.Tudo maravilhoso. Fomos tratados como verdadeiros príncipes por pessoas receptivas e alegres. Apesar das diferenças culturais, tudo é muito diferente do que imaginávamos, positivamente”, diz.

“Falando das lutas, várias foram ótimas, num evento cheio de finalizações. Cristiano Marcello lutou muito bem, Francimar Bodão deu um dos maiores nocautes que já vi na vida e o combate entre Bruno Carvalho e Marcos Marquez, o melhor da noite. Bruno venceu, mas os dois lutadores saíram valorizados”, fala.

“Mas, além das lutas e do evento, a experiência foi muito além. Prova de profissionalismo, os lutadores aproveitaram para conhecer um pouco do país, todos unidos, independentemente de serem adversários. Fizemos amigos e vivemos momentos e histórias inesquecíveis. A Jordânia estará guardada com carinho no coração de todos nós”, encerra André, que enviou essas imagens exclusivas ao GRACIEMAG.com.

December 8 was an historic day in Amman, Jordan, as the Desert Force Fight Championship debuted there, with members of the royal family princes Hachem Bin Hussein and Hussein Mirza in attendance.

André Bottino, handler of American fighter of Mexican descent Marcos Marquez, was there and wrote in about the experience:

“The event was impeccably organized. Everything was splendid. We were treated like true princes by receptive and happy people. Despite the cultural differences, everything was a lot different from what we imagined, positively,” he says.

“Regarding the fights, a number of them were great, and the event was loaded with finishes. Cristiano Marcelo fought really well, Francimar Bodão landed one of the greatest knockouts I’ve ever seen in my life, and the fight between Bruno Carvalho and Marcos Marquez was the best of the night. Bruno won, but both fighters were given their due props,” he says.

“But the experience went well beyond the fights and the event. Proof of their professionalism, the fighters made the most of the trip to get out and see some of the country together, regardless of whether they fought each other or not. We made friends and had unforgettable moments. Jordan will forever hold a dear place in all our hearts,” said André, who sent in these pictures from the trip in exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com.

The over 2,500 MMA fans who made the trip to the Mauri Piniheiro gymnasium this Saturday witnessed an historic bout in the main event of the fifth installment of First Class Fight. In a lively bout, the undefeated Marcos Rogério “Pezão” won a unanimous decision over Paulo Filho.

With a long career in the sport, most notable for his performances in the now-defunct Pride event and as the former champion of the WEC, Paulão had only lost once prior to yesterday’s fight. His first came at the hands of Chael Sonnen. Now Pezão counts nine fights and nine wins in MMA.

Egged on by the crowd, which grew in excitement as he stepped into the cage, Pezão took the initiative from the opening bell. With solid crosses permeating Paulão’s guard, as well as high kicks and knees, he wore away at his opponent’s resistance.

Paulo Filho went to the clinch to defend himself and even managed a well-landed takedown early on, but that was one of his few flashes of brilliance in the fight. Pezão thereafter did well in defending against Filho’s takedown attempts.

Marcos Rogério was the better fighter in the two rounds that followed.

Even when he was in bottom position on the ground and Paulão tried to execute his famed ground-and-pound, Pezão dominated and controlled the action until the judges made their decision.

“I showed what I can do. I beat a really famous guy, a really tough guy, and now I want to fly even higher. I’m going to make it to the UFC,” stated Pezão, while still in the octagon.

In the evening’s other fights, Daniel Sarafian defeated Maurício Alonso by decision; Fábio Negão submitted Rodrigo Ximbica; Flávio Álvaro knocked out Samuel Quito, and black belt Murilo Santana submitted Jorge Michelan.

Os mais de 2500 fãs de MMA que foram ao ginásio Mauro Pinheiro, neste sábado, viram um combate histórico na luta principal da quinta edição do First Class Fight. Em um confronto muito movimentado, o invicto Marcos Rogério Pezão derrotou Paulo Filho por pontos, em decisão unânime dos juízes.

Com uma longa carreira no esporte, se destacando no extinto Pride e sendo ex-campeão do WEC, Paulão sofreu nesta noite apenas sua segunda derrota. A primeira havia sido para Chael Sonnen. Já Pezão agora soma nove lutas e nove vitórias em torneios de MMA.

Empurrado pela torcida, que vibrou muito desde sua entrada no octógono, Pezão partiu para cima e tomou a iniciativa assim que o gongo soou. Com bons cruzados entrando na guarda de Paulão, assim como seus chutes altos e joelhadas, ele foi minando a resistência do adversário.

conseguiu uma boa queda no começo, mas foi um dos poucos momentos em que brilhou na luta. Pezão passou a se defender bem das tentativas de queda.

Mesmo quando ficou por baixo no chão e Paulão tentava colocar seu famoso ground and pound, Pezão dominava e conseguiu controlar bem o combate até o resultado dado pelos juízes.

“Mostrei nessa noite do que sou capaz. Venci um cara muito
famoso, um cara muito duro, e agora quero voar mais alto. Vou chegar no UFC”, afirmou Pezão, ainda no octógono.

Em outros combates da noite, Daniel Sarafian venceu Maurício Alonso por decisão; Fábio Negão finalizou Rodrigo Ximbica, Flávio Álvaro nocauteou Samuel Quito e o faixa-preta Murilo Santana finalizou Jorge Michelan.

Astro do Jiu-Jitsu, Murilo Santana está atrás de novos desafios. Bicampeão brasileiro da arte suave, ele agora vai estrear no MMA na quinta edição do First Class Fight, que acontece no dia 23 de outubro, no ginásio Mauro Pinheiro, no Ibirapuera, São Paulo.

O faixa-preta vai fazer sua primeira luta nas artes marciais mistas contra o duríssimo Jorge Michelan e está treinando firme na academia Barbosa para começar bem essa nova carreira no mundo das lutas. “A minha especialidade é o Jiu-Jitsu, mas estou me preparando muito para o MMA”, explicou Santana.

Até por ser a estreia de um dos principais pesos médios da arte suave, Murilo está ciente de sua responsabilidade nessa luta. “Estou pensando apenas no dia 23, só nesse dia, e vai dar tudo certo. Nunca estive tão focado para um combate quanto para esse.”

Sobre seu adversário, Santana espera um combate complicado, principalmente por Jorge Michelan ter mais experiência no octógono. “Espero luta dura. O Michelan é um cara experiente, mas tenho me preparado bem, com bons parceiros de treino. Vou chegar pronto para fazer muita força”, completou.

Conforme o promotor Wallid Ismail anunciou ao GRACIEMAG.com, o próximo Jungle Fight by Pretorian, o show nascido na Amazônia, vai ser capitaneado por um confere eletrizante entre dois brasileiros de carreiras internacionais, Edilberto Crocotá x Eduardo Pamplona. “Vai ser uma pancadaria sem igual”, diz Wallid.

Além de Crocotá (14v, 4d, 1e) e Pamplona (12v, 2d), o evento será marcado pela luta de despedida de Johil de Oliveira, sua última antes de pendurar as luvas, segundo o próprio veterano disse a Wallid. Johil encara Alessandro Zoio.
