Over a year without competing, ever since returning to Brazil, the black belt Edmilson Conceição did a splendid job on his sport-Jiu-Jitsu comeback. Following a two-year stint living in Abu Dhabi, Edmilson set his sights on the prize money up for grabs in the absolute division at Invicto Cup, a tournament in São Leopoldo, Greater Porto Alegre.

The Southern Brazilian struck gold with the BRL 3,000 prize for winning the open weight contest featuring a different sort of match format. To illustrate, the bouts were of six-minute duration, and purple belts, brown belts and black belts all competed against each other in some of the divisions. The promoters of the event now want to set up a second installment for December 1, and the prize to the winner of the absolute may be a motorcycle.

“Our aim is to at least double the prize money and also award cash prizes for the female and master divisions, as well as to make room for a juvenile division. The athletes are the stars of the show, and they should be treated as such,” said Valério Doca, a representative for 12 Polegadas, the company producing the event.

Some other competitors who earned some extra loot were Alliance representatives Fabio Pulita, a brown belt, and purple belt Daniel Reis, who earned BRL 1,500 and 1,000, respectively. The absolute champions from the white and blue belt groups won BRL 500 and 750, respectively.

“We want to make the South a hotbed for open professional Jiu-Jitsu for competitors from the entire country,” underscored Gabriel Tayeh, one of the founders of the event.

Afastado das competições há mais de um ano, desde que voltou a morar no Brasil, o faixa-preta Edmilson Conceição fez bonito no retorno ao Jiu-Jitsu esportivo. Após viver dois anos em Abu Dhabi, Edmilson caiu dentro de olho na premiação em dinheiro oferecida ao campeão absoluto do Invicto Cup, em São Leopoldo, na grande Porto Alegre.

O gaúcho faturou 3 mil reais no campeonato, que contou com um sistema diferente de disputas. Por exemplo, as lutas foram de seis minutos, e roxas, marrons e pretas lutaram juntos em algumas das divisões. Os organizadores agora querem preparar uma segunda edição no dia 1º de dezembro, e o prêmio para o campeão absoluto pode ser uma motocicleta.

“Nosso objetivo é pelo menos dobrar o prêmio, e premiar com dinheiro também o feminino e o master, além de abrir espaço para a categoria juvenil. Os atletas são as estrelas e devem ser valorizados como tal”, disse Valério Doca, representante da 12 Polegadas, produtora do evento.

Quem também fisgou uma grana foram os atletas da Alliance Fabio Pulita (faixa-marrom) e Daniel Reis (faixa-roxa), que receberam 1,5 mil e 1 mil reais, respectivamente. Campeões absolutos das faixas de base, como brancas e azuis, também receberam prêmios entre 500 e 750 reais.

“Queremos tornar a Região Sul um pólo do Jiu Jitsu profissional aberto a todos os lutadores do país”, destacou Gabriel Tayeh, um dos idealizadores do campeonato.

Desert Force looks set to move MMA up another step in popularity in the Middle East, thanks to TV. Photo by Khalid Walid Hassan.

In the midst of the current era of political turmoil, the Middle East will again be the stage for a major MMA event. With Amman, Jordan, hosting the event, countries that now and again flare up in armed conflict will get to see their representatives do battle in the Desert Force cage.

As previously reported here on GRACIEMAG.com, MBC Action, a Middle Eastern channel spanning 22 Arabic-speaking nations, will broadcast the event. The network has run a number of ads for the event ever since the end of the sacred Muslim month of Ramadan.

The lineup will feature an array of different accents. Making his debut in the sport, Mallick Quraan is the son of a Jordanian father and American mother. Born in the USA, he was raised in New Jersey and learned Portuguese from his capoeira teacher. Despite never having visited Brazil, he is fluent in the language. Also featuring at the Middle Eastern event is Gabriel Tayeh, a Brazilian of Palestinian parentage, who is doing his training camp at X-Gym in Rio de Janeiro. The Sul Jiu-Jitsu black belt from Porto Alegre commented on the opportunity:

“It’s a Middle Eastern tournament but half the fighters are of other origins. I feel that makes the event all the greater, because it brings experience and a different technical level from Brazil, the USA and Europe. The folks in the Middle East are really tough, so it’s a good mix.”

Aside from the fighters, there will be Jiu-Jitsu black belt coaches and assistants from Brazil—like Alex Negão Paz, who will be cornering Yahya Alhammadi—a head of security for a prince of Abu Dhabi—, as well as Francimar Bodão, who is training Jordan’s Haider Rashedd.

According to Zaid Abu-Soud, one of the promoters of the event, the central idea in putting on the show is the search for champion-caliber fighters from the region to launch at major shows with a worldwide scope in the near future: “The Arabic youth needs sporting heroes, and MMA can provide it for them.”

Mesmo atravessando uma época de turbulência política, o Oriente Médio será novamente palco de um grande evento de MMA. Em Amam, na Jordânia, países que volta e meia resolviam disputas através de conflitos armados vão poder ver seus representantes no octógono do Desert Force.

Como adiantado aqui na GRACIEMAG.com, o canal MBC Action, que cobre 22 países de língua árabe, promete transmitir o evento. A emissora já tem feito, desde o fim do Ramadan (o mês sagrado muçulmano), várias chamadas no seu horário comercial.

O evento terá muitos sotaques. Estreante no esporte, Mallick Quraan é filho de um jordaniano e uma americana. Nasceu nos EUA, foi criado em Nova Jersey e por lá aprendeu português com seu mestre de capoeira. Mesmo sem jamais ter visitado o Brasil, fala português fluente. Outra figura presente no evento árabe é o brasileiro de origem palestina Gabriel Tayeh, que faz sua preparação na X-Gym no Rio de Janeiro. O faixa-marrom da Sul Jiu-Jitsu de Porto Alegre comentou a chance:

“É um torneio árabe, mas quase metade dos lutadores é de descendentes que vivem fora daquela região. Acho que isso engrandece o evento, porque traz experiências e um nível técnico diferenciado do Brasil, dos EUA e da Europa. O pessoal no Oriente Médio é muito casca-grossa, então é uma boa mistura.”

Fora os lutadores, teremos ainda faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro como treinadores e assistentes – é o caso de Alex Negão Paz, que acompanha um dos seguranças do Príncipe de Abu Dhabi, Yahya Alhammadi, e também o caso de Francimar Bodão, que treina o jordaniano Haider Rashedd.

Segundo um dos promotores do evento, Zaid Abu-Soud, a ideia principal do evento é a busca de campeões da região para serem lançados em breve nos grandes torneios de abrangência mundial: “A juventude árabe carece de ídolos no esporte e o MMA pode proporcionar isso para as pessoas.”

Yesterday, the television network MBC, the biggest in the Arab world and owned by the Saudi royal family, announced that it has come to an agreement with the Desert Force MMA promotion. Desert Force is a Jordan-based event where Jiu-Jitsu black belts Cristiano Marcello and Jorge Michelan, as well as France’s Anthony Rea and others, have fought in the past. The promoters’ aim, though, is to farm talent from the region and launch them in the international MMA market.

“Our objective has been to draw a greater and greater audience to our event, thus channeling expectations onto local Arab heroes of the sport. Our region is in need of more entertainment, and MMA has become more and more popular around here. We couldn’t have hoped for a better partner, as MBC reaches 200 million households in 22 Arabic-speaking nations. That’s a giant media segment,” stated the promoter and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Zaid Mirza, a native of the Brazilian capital of Brasilia based in Jordan.

The next Desert Force event will take place on the 7th of September, just after the month of Ramadan. It will be broadcast on the MBC Action channel, specializing in action movies and radical sports, to an audience of around 58 million people, according to the network. At the channel’s behest, the tournament featuring the Arab fighters and those of Arab descent through to the final phase will pick up again.

One of the participants is Southern Brazilian brown belt Gabriel Tayeh, who will be representing Palestine: “This is great news. The exposure it will give the fighters will be huge. That will draw more sponsors and fans,” said Gabriel, before hopping a plane to Rio de Janeiro to carry on training at X-Gym and Team Nogueira.

O Desert Force é um evento com sede na Jordânia, onde já lutaram os faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu Cristiano Marcello e Jorge Michelan, além do francês Anthony Rea e muitos outros. A meta do show, no entanto, é descobrir talentos da região e lançá-los no mercado internacional de MMA.

O próximo Desert Force deve ocorrer no dia 7 de setembro, logo após o mês do Ramadan. Será transmitido pelo canal MBC Action, especializado em filmes de ação e esportes radicais, com uma audiência de cerca de 58 milhões de pessoas segundo a emissora. Por imposição do canal, porém, o torneio de árabes e descendentes que se encontrava nas fases finais vai recomeçar.

Um dos participantes é o gaúcho faixa-marrom Gabriel Tayeh, que luta representando a Palestina: “Essa é uma ótima notícia, a exposição agora será gigante para os lutadores. During this brief stay on Jordanian soil to check out the inaugural Desert Fight Championship event, I took the opportunity to check out the Dead Sea for the first time since my first visit thirty years ago.

It brought back a lot of memories. When I was seven, I stayed at the opposite bank, where my father was born. And as memories bring back more memories, I started remembering some things I went through with my late father. I started to remember the challenges he faced since he was young in a refugee camp and later his premature and solitary emigration to Brazil, at just seventeen years of age.

Furthermore, I instantly recovered the teachings of my first master, my father. Perhaps that is why we have so much respect and admiration for our Jiu-Jitsu masters, as they end up filling a void left when we part ways from our parents.

Now I see myself filling this role, that of father and master. My nephew, who is a son to me, is named Gabriel Tayeh and he will have his first fight ever, at Desert Fight. I used to think that when this moment came I would be merely concerned with his performance in the ring, since a lot will be at stake. The proof of how effective the Jiu-Jitsu I taught him is. His representing a flag. The value of courage. Indeed, attributes that will be exposed in the ring. However, all that takes to the background for me now.

The thing that most concerns me isn’t the result, but how the art influenced his life. Thanks to Jiu-Jitsu, we managed to polish the kid up and I can see he is confident in the midst of life’s challenges, whether in a literal fight or whether it is an even greater challenge than that.

Now, I clearly understand that we should not show our sons and students the paths they should take, but the way they should take them. After all, life chooses the paths for us.

You may have an excellent guard, but your opponent may pull guard first, so you’d better pass or run the risk of being swept. That’s why on countless occasions masters Carlos and Helio Gracie publicly stated that Jiu-Jitsu is the “savior of the youth,” since the art does indeed have the capacity to prepare our children for life.

Jiu-Jitsu is one of the greatest legacies we can leave for our students, as it teaches, either directly or indirectly, the gentle art of dealing with any challenge, in or out of the academy. It’s a wonderful sensation to see our students at the top of the podium, but even better to see them winners of the hard art of living.

Nessa rápida estada em solo jordaniano para acompanhar esta primeira edição do show Desert Fight Champioship, aproveitei para voltar ao Mar Morto após 30 anos da minha primeira visita.

Muitas lembranças vieram à tona. Quando eu tinha 7 anos, estava na margem oposta, local onde meu pai nasceu. E como lembrança traz lembrança comecei a recuperar alguns fatos que vivi ao lado do meu falecido pai. Fui lembrando dos desafios que ele enfrentou desde cedo num campo de refugiados e mais tarde na precoce emigração solitária para o Brasil, com parcos 17 anos.

Mais do que isso, recuperei num rápido instante ensinamentos do meu primeiro mestre, meu pai. Talvez por isso tenhamos tanto respeito e admiração por nossos mestres de Jiu-Jitsu, pois eles acabam ocupando um espaço deixado pelos descaminhos da vida, quando nos afastamos de nossos progenitores.

Hoje me vejo nesse papel, o de pai e mestre. Meu sobrinho, que para mim é um filho, chama-se Gabriel Tayeh e vai fazer sua primeira luta no Desert Fight. Pensei que quando chegasse esse momento eu estaria meramente preocupado com sua atuação no ringue, afinal muita coisa está em jogo. A prova da eficiência do Jiu-Jitsu que lhe foi ensinado. A representação de uma bandeira. O valor da coragem. Enfim, atributos que ficam expostos dentro de um ringue. Entretanto, tudo isso está em segundo plano agora.

O que mais me importa não é o resultado dentro da grade, mas como a arte influenciou sua vida. Graças ao Jiu-Jitsu, conseguimos lapidar o garoto e vejo que ele está confiante frente aos desafios da vida, seja ela uma luta literal, seja ela um desafio ainda maior.

Com clareza entendo, agora, que não devemos mostrar aos nossos filhos e alunos os caminhos que eles têm de seguir, mas sim a forma de percorrê-los. Afinal, os caminhos são escolhidos pela vida.

Você pode ter uma guarda excelente, mas o adversário pode puxá-lo antes, então você vai precisar passar ou corre o risco de ser raspado. Por isso que repetidas vezes os mestres Carlos e Helio Gracie vieram a público dizer que o Jiu-Jitsu era a “salvação da mocidade”. Pois a arte tem de fato a capacidade de preparar nossos filhos para a vida.

O Jiu-Jitsu é um dos maiores legados que podemos deixar para nossos alunos, pois ensina, direta ou indiretamente, a arte suave de enfrentar qualquer desafio, dentro ou fora da academia. É uma excelente sensação vermos nossos alunos no topo do pódio, mas melhor ainda é vê-los vencedores na difícil arte de viver.

He was a fixture at the grueling MMA training sessions at Brazilian Top Team, where he was a top-notch sparring partner for Minotauro & Co. He was a student of the late Carlson Gracie, with whom he lived while still a blue belt. And he always figured on the winners’ stand at the ADCC. A Jiu-Jitsu champion at nearly all belt levels. A former volleyball player for Brazil’s juvenile national team.

Yes, the giant Alex “Negão” Paz was a great exponent of Jiu-Jitsu early in the decade, but he went beyond that: he was a witness to all the behind-the-scenes action in world MMA. But what has he been up to, this figure who sticks out like a sore thumb for his 115 kg (253 lbs) spread over a 1.92-meter frame?

Living in Abu Dhabi for the last year, Alex oversees MMA training at Emirates Team and supervises Marcos Oliveira, Hassan Rumaiti, Michel Maia, Maiky Reiter among others. Considered the foremost authority of MMA in the Middle East, he tells what he’s been up to and breaks down the stage at which the sport finds itself in the region.

How did you end up taking up MMA again, here in the Emirates?
I met Maiki here, who came in from Holland, and when I laid eyes on him in training I knew he had enormous potential in MMA. Then we started training together, but with no set plan. That was when Hassan Rumaiti (Sheikh Tahnoon’s adoptive son), who was watching the training session, asked to start his training, as he was planning to make his debut in the style. After a few months he debuted victoriously in Holland. Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed was really happy and supported our training.

What is the make-up of the team in this style?
Besides the Brazilian fighters, we started with the second generation of Sheikh Tahnoon’s kids. There are about twenty youths between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. We also have fighters from other countries.

Is the MMA market in Abu Dhabi growing?
Not just in Abu Dhabi. Here we have a very well-structured event, the ADFC. In November we’ll hold one in Jordan where two or three of our fighters will be on the card. In January we’ll probably have another one in Egypt, where we’ll try and get our fighters in there, as well.

How is the team’s training going?
It’s been great to see. It’s been going off. Hassan, in particular, has made a lot of progress. And to work with guys like Marcão, Michel, Maiki and Luciano “Mutante”, who just arrived, has been a real pleasure. The kids are responding well to what’s demanded of them.

Aside from Hassan, are there any others from the region you feel are promising?
Khalid Walid of Syria and Gabriel Tayeh of Palestine should make their debuts in Jordan. A lot will be said about those two. Khalid is an excellent striker and Gabriel has really slick Jiu-Jitsu. We also have an excellent boxer, Ali Salem, who is Hassan’s brother, and there’s the heavyweight Yahya Mansoor, who is a local Jiu-Jitsu hero. Not to mention the pleasant surprises from the new generation Sheikh Tahnoon provided. There will be a lot of talk about them.

Anything else you’d like to mention?
I’d just like to give thanks to the people who taught me so much, like masters Carlson, Murilo (Bustamante), Ricardo Libório, Zé Mario, Bebeo, Cláudio Coelho and friends like Marcelo Palermo, Ovidio de Abreu and Felipe Bronze. And two the group at Emirates Team, mainly Jonver Bonini, Bruno Lopes, Orley “Tartaruga”, Oscar Junior and Marcelo “Guardinha” Motta, who always help out in training. And I’d like to thank the unconditional support and vote of confidence of Sheikh Mohamad and Sheikh Tahnoon for making it possible for us to carry out our work here in Abu Dhabi.

Ele foi personagem constante nos fortes treinos de MMA da Brazilian Top Team, onde figurava como um sparring de luxo de Minotauro & Cia. Sim, o gigante Alex “Negão” Paz foi um grande expoente do Jiu-Jitsu no inicio da década, mas foi além: um espectador de luxo dos bastidores do MMA mundial. Mas por onde anda esta figura facilmente notada pelos seus 115kg distribuídos em 1,92m de altura?

Como você reiniciou o MMA aqui nos Emirados?
Conheci o Maiki aqui, que estava vindo da Holanda, e quando botei os olhos no treino dele, vi que tinha um enorme potencial no MMA. Daí começamos a treinar juntos, mas sem nenhum plano estabelecido. Foi quando o Hassan Rumaiti (filho adotivo do Sheik Tahnnon), vendo os treinos, pediu para iniciar seus treinamento, pois queria estrear na modalidade. Em poucos meses estreou com uma vitória na Holanda. Sheik Mohamad Bin Zayed ficou muito feliz e apoiou nossos treinos.

Como está composta a equipe nesta modalidade?
Além dos lutadores brasileiros, iniciamos com a segunda geração de filhos do Sheik Tahnnon. São cerca de 20 jovens com idade de 16 a 18 anos. Também temos lutadores oriundos de outros países.

O mercado de MMA está em expansão em Abu Dhabi?
Não só em Abu Dhabi. Aqui temos um evento bem estruturado, o ADFC. Em novembro, teremos um na Jordânia onde teremos dois ou três lutadores nossos. Em janeiro, provavelmente teremos um outro no Egito onde tentaremos colocar alunos nossos também.

Como estão os treinamentos do time?
Tá dando gosto de ver. O bicho tá pegando. O Hassan em particular evoluiu muito. E trabalhar com caras como Marcão, Michel, Maiki e o Luciano “Mutante”, que chegou agora aqui, é muito prazeroso. A rapaziada responde bem às exigências.

Fora o Hassan, você teria outras apostas na região?
Na Jordânia deve estrear o Khalid Walid pela Síria, e o Gabriel Tayeh pela Palestina. Os dois vão dar muito o que falar. Khalid é um excelente estriker e o Gabriel tem um Jiu-Jitsu muito apurado. Também temos o excelente boxe do Ali Salem, que é irmão do Hassan, e o peso pesado Yahya Mansoor que é idolo local do Jiu-Jitsu. Sem falar nas gratas surpresas desta nova geração que o Sheik Tahnnon nos disponibilizou. Vão dar o que falar.

Alguma consideração final?
Só agradecimento. Às pessoas que me ensinaram muito como os mestres Carlson, o Murilo (Bustamante), Ricardo Libório, Zé Mario, Bebeo, Cláudio Coelho e amigos como Marcelo Palermo, Ovidio de Abreu e Felipe Bronze. Aos componentes do Emirates Team, principalmente Jonver Bonini, Bruno Lopes, Orley ‘Tartaruga’ , Oscar  Junior e Marcelo “Guardinha” Motta que sempre ajudam nos treinos.
