The fights start at 7 p.m.

A razão do nosso trabalho é justamente provar o contrário.

The big night for Copa Pódio’s big boys is fast approaching, and fans who plan on catching the event live online had best make haste.

According to the promoters of the tournament, the pay-per-view packages are already into the second round of sales and should soon see a price hike.

In order to watch the GP, all you need to do is visit the www.copapodio.com website and click “pay-per-view” on the menu. After registering, you will be taken to a page with payment options that include credit cards.

To assure that viewers are treated to a first-rate spectacle, the promotion is bringing back Marco de Vargas, a soccer commentator for Fox channel in Brazil, with color commentating from Raphael Abi-Rihan (in Portuguese) and Denis Asche (in English).

The master of ceremonies and announcer for the live event will be Jiu-Jitsu black belt Olivar Leite.

“Brazilian television channels are really focused on MMA and don’t seem to put much belief into Jiu-Jitsu’s potential. The reason we’re doing what we’re doing is to show them otherwise. Sooner or later everyone is going to end up adapting and giving the gentle art a fair shake,” Jeferson Maycá, one of Copa Pódio’s organizers, told GRACIEMAG.com.

The broadcast will begin at 4 PM on Sunday, January 13. Tickets to watch the event live at the arena are also available on the www.copapodio.com website.

Bear in mind: Each user name counts for one view access on the site. For security reasons, no pay-per-view packages will be sold on the day of the event.

The one sending the warning is Brazilian national Jiu-Jitsu champion Herbert Burns.

Of course, Burns, after reading about it on GRACIEMAG.com, is aware of how Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is well-trained on the ground, thanks to the help he’s getting from Team Alliance aces Leo Nogueira, Antonio Peinado and Sergio Moraes.

But Burns bets the house on Shogun’s rival, Alexander Gustafsson, a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, for their showdown at UFC on FOX 5 on Dec. 8.

“I taught Gustafsson for two weeks in Stockholm,” Burns told the GRACIEMAG.com reporter Vitor Freitas. “I can assure you he’s really tough on the ground. If it goes to the ground, he can surprise Shogun with his jiu-jitsu,

Curiously, the only loss on Gustafsson’s ledger came by way of submission — choked out by Phil Davis in 2010. Gustafsson, however, has three tapout wins to his name.

Shogun has only won by tapout once, against Kevin Randleman in Pride FC, and he himself has been tapped out twice.

The brother of Gilbert “Durinho” only took part in the early part of the training of the Swede, who is now going through his final stretch in preparation in the U.S. at Alliance MMA, home to UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

“I participated in the early stage of Gustafsson’s training for Shogun. What impressed me was his takedown defense,” remarked the black belt featherweight.

“He’s really awesome in the standup, with powerful boxing and kickboxing. He has excellent octagon presence and is stoked about the fight. He’s the way the fans see him. The guy has a bunch of knockouts in the UFC, and that explains his style. Gustafsson will have a strategy and will go for it. He’s really strong and has great endurance, so it’ll be a great fight. Despite Shogun being Brazilian, I’m betting on Gustafsson for this one,” Burns said, before praising the Swede as a student.

“He paid a lot of attention to the jiu-jitsu techniques I taught him. He’d repeat them until I’d tell him it was enough. He’s really tough on the ground.”

The one saying so is a Brazilian national champion.

Cigano and Velzasquez will soon be facing off.

UFC president Dana White announced at a press conference today that the deal to broadcast on Fox television network is set in stone.

And for the maiden broadcast, Dana picked the UFC heavyweight title fight between current champion Cain Velasquez and Junior “Cigano” dos Santos as the main event.

The bout is scheduled for November 12 at Anaheim, California’s Honda Center.

The Fox-debut show will last one hour and only the title dispute will be broadcast.

White explained the different format, similar to boxing events: “We need to educate millions of new television viewers who will be coming into contact with MMA and the UFC for the first time.”

The Fox executives also appeared at the presser, guaranteeing that the UFC will be given the importance of and promoted as much as other major sporting events, like American football and baseball: “We want to promote and organize this UFC show in Superbowl style, with parties in the parking lots and all the Hollywood celebrities.”

Asked whether he will be handing the Anaheim event over for Fox to organize, Dana replied quickly: “We want the Fox way of doing events. They’re not the biggest television network in the USA for nothing. They’re the biggest because they know what they’re doing. This Fox deal was my dream.”

Still on the boost the sport being broadcast on network television will provide, Dana was forthright: “When I hear the UFC is already mainstream, I say we aren’t yet. We’re mainstream when you stop anybody in any city of the United States and ask them what the UFC is and they answer, like when they’re asked about the NFL or the NBA. For that to happen, we need to do a lot more now than we’ve done over the last ten years.”

On the fight between the champion and the Brazilian challenger itself, Dana said he expects a sensational battle: “We didn’t need to think much to pick this fight. Have you ever seen a boring fight from these two? I think Cain will try and take Junior to the ground, something no one has been able to do yet. Cigano is a Jiu-Jitsu black belt under the Nogueira brother but has never been to the ground in a fight. We’ll see what happens. Everyone’s excited. Since I announced the fight, Junior’s manager has sent me 57 text messages!”

The UFC making it to network television in the USA is another step in the fight between MMA and boxing, and Dana also addressed the date picked for the show – the very day of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight: “I think it’ll be good for us, since to watch the UFC in November you won’t have to pay 65 dollars. It’ll be free!”

Dana didn’t reveal how the November 12 event will be broadcast in Brazil, but did guarantee that audiences around the world will be catered to. On UFC Rio, Dana again was upbeat about the smashing success the event saw in the country: “Globo is the Fox of Brazil and for the first time in history Rede TV managed to beat Globo’s audience, and that was because of the UFC, which is extremely important to us,” said the top brass in closing.
