Mahamed Aly won double gold at the Euro No-Gi. IBJJF.

To win double gold at the European Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi IBJJF Championship, held last weekend, Mahamed Aly had to beat some stiff competition. Some of these battles were won by submission, and one of them drew plenty of attention from the public present in the Rome, Italy venue. A flying armbar, similar to that used by Davi Ramos in a 2015 ADCC final, was how Aly finished one of his absolute matches.

“It was in the quarterfinals,” he tells Graciemag. “Soon before that, my opponent tried to submit me with a foot lock from the de la Riva guard. I attack his foot as well, forcing him to let the position go. Then he sat and stretched his arm; then I made the move and won.”

Today, on her thirty-fifth birthday, we commend her for being the athlete who leads by example, the teacher who shows the way and the promoter of women’s Jiu-Jitsu who demonstrates what women are capable of in the gentle art.

Xande Ribeiro was responsible for one of the most spectacular moments of the 2012 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship: a flying armbar that the two-time absolute champion of the world used to subdue Roberto Alencar in the heavyweight semifinal. The magic move, which had the crowd in the Long Beach Pyramid rubbing its eyes in disbelief, is now getting tactfully taught by the very magician himself. Following a seminar the black belt held at the Ribeiro JJ branch in the Brazilian state of Ceará, he took the time to demonstrate how to take flight and snag an arm—exclusively for GRACIEMAG.com.

Heavyweight blackbelt silver-medalist Xande Ribeiro only lost on advantage points to to two top competitors at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship that came to a close yesterday in Long Beach.

Xande’s forward momentum was stopped by Léo Nogueira in the absolute and by Rodolfo Vieira at weight. The two-time absolute champion of the world came out on top, and even starred in one of the greatest moments of the championship: a spectacular ambar on Roberto Alenacr in the heavyweight semifinal, when he soared into the air and latched onto the arm, making the final adjustments after landing.

If prizes were awarded, it would surely be a solid contender for finest finish. Indeed, so how about a trophy for best submission, IBJJF?

Repetitions, that’s one of the main recommendations to sharpen up your Jiu-Jitsu. Repeating positions and moves over and over again makes them come out naturally, when it’s combat time.

Before securing her seventh world title, our GMA Hannette Staack repeated and repeated the techniques, from the most basic to the most intricate. The result was a spectacular flying armbar in the middleweight champion-deciding fight.

Recently promoted to black belt by our GMA Roger Gracie, Andy Roberts put on a show at his first competition at his new rank, at the World Pro tryouts in London. In the end, Roberts took silver, but the armbar he performed was worth gold.
