Foi uma tarde memorável na Cidade da Polícia, no Rio de Janeiro, nesta quarta-feira, 2 de maio de 2018. Sob os aplausos de diversos policiais de elite de várias partes do Brasil, presentes para conferências e estudos táticos, o dojo da Coordenadoria de Recursos Especiais da Polícia Civil (Core) recebeu a presença de grande mestre Robson Gracie, que discursou na inauguração da foto de seu pai, Carlos, no espaço de treinamentos local.

A cerimônia marcou, ainda, a certificação do espaço de lutas pela Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do Rio, presidida por um emocionado grande mestre Robson.

E os laços entre a polícia e o Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro só fazem se fortalecer: além da certificação promovida pelo faixa-vermelha, a Core também divulgou que pretende disputar os principais torneios da arte suave como uma nova equipe. Para tal, a agremiação Core BJJ já está filiada à IBJJF, à CBJJ e à FJJ-Rio de grande mestre Robson.

A iniciativa foi obra dos faixas-pretas e policiais Sérgio Ignacio, Rodrigo Oliveira, Eduardo Herdy e Rubem Júnior, e já conta com colecionadores de medalha como os faixas-pretas Aloysio Falcão e Francisco Pacheco.

“Nossa intenção principal é manter a tradição do Jiu-Jitsu como luta de defesa pessoal para os policiais”, disse o comissário Sérgio Ignacio ao GRACIEMAG.com. “Desde 1985 a polícia civil carioca já conta com treinos de Jiu-Jitsu. Agora, o dojo moderno e um time esportivo certamente vão servir para motivar ainda mais os policiais a treinarem juntos em seu ambiente de trabalho, mantendo assim sua forma técnica e física para bem servir à população.”

The Jiu-Jitsu and boxing instructor at CORE, an elite police force in Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Herdy has been turning heads for his performances in MMA. Schooled in Jiu-Jitsu by Osiris Maia and taught boxing by Ricardo Tinha, Herdy is unbeaten in MMA so far, notching his second win last May 4 at Bitetti Combat Rocinha, where he took on Paraná Fight Team’s Ronaldo Arada Milan.

So does doing Jiu-Jitsu and MMA make Herdy any better of an elite police trooper? GRACIEMAG.com was curious to find out, so we had the following conversation with the upbeat welterweight.

Why do you fight?

I fight for glory. As it goes in the Brazilian national anthem, I want “future peace and past glory.” When I’m older, I want to be able to look back and enjoy all this. Fighting also entails evolving much quicker. By being in contact with fighters from different schools, your technical level improves and, as a consequence, it reflects in your training partners and your academy as a whole. In my opinion it all starts with training. Training lasts for months, years; the fight itself may last but a few minutes. My goal in MMA is to reach the top. I want lots of belts. It wasn’t without reason that I was in reserve fights at the Bitetti Combat 10 GP and BC 11 under-70 kg GP. If someone was unable to continue, I was there hungry for a shot. Either way, I don’t make plans; I just like fighting.

In the photo you sent in to us you seem to have gone Thai. What goes on in your head when you’re doing MMA?

Truth is, I didn’t just happen to fight like that. I’ve been training Thai boxing for a long time now, ever since 1995, at Brazilian Fight academy with Osiris Maia. I have the honor of having received two black belts from the grandmaster: one in Jiu-Jitsu and the other in Thai boxing. And I can’t leave out Ricardo Tinha, who got my hands up to speed in boxing. I get more confident standing with every fight. On my debut, in 2011, I feel I did well. I felt more prepared in my second fight. Thus I forge ahead, training hard, fighting and evolving. I plan to be even better for my third outing. My record’s coming along nicely, two fights and two first-round knockouts.

What do the guys with pure Jiu-Jitsu backgrounds get wrong most in MMA?

Getting scared and trying to take it to the ground any way they can. A striker’s objective, besides hurting his adversary, is to frustrate grapplers’ attempts at taking it to the ground. If that’s all the grappler has up his sleeve, he’s going to lose. Even if ground fighting is his mainstay, he should train till getting to a point where he’s comfortable on his feet. After all, that’s where the fight starts.

Do you have any suggestions for police officers who want to be safe in carrying out there duties?

I always study cases that arise, learn and refresh my knowledge. It’s key that you study to learn from past mistakes; analyze where others went wrong, which unfortunately happens; see where you can improve; and most importantly, use good judgment. All that goes for everything in life, and it’s no different in police work.

What self-defense technique should policemen master?

Police should avoid hurting citizens, andI feel there’s nothing better than Jiu-Jitsu for that. Gentle-art control positions are excellent for police work. Obviously, there are some differences, since the police can’t go exposing their firearms. There’s a difference compared to traditional Jiu-Jitsu positions. I feel that for beginners, practicing three times a week is enough, if just for the excellent physical exercise the martial art provides.

Lutar Jiu-Jitsu e MMA faz de Herdy um melhor policial de elite? O GRACIEMAG.com ficou curioso quanto a isso e bateu um papo com o casca-grossa gente boa, atleta da categoria até 77kg.

Por que você luta?

Eu luto pela glória. Como diz o Hino Nacional Brasileiro, quero “paz no futuro e glória no passado”. Mais velho, quero olhar para trás e desfrutar disso. Lutar é também evoluir mais rapidamente. Em contato com lutadores de escolas diferentes, o nível técnico do atleta melhora e, consequentemente, reflete nos seus companheiros de treino e na academia de uma forma geral. Na minha opinião tudo começa no treino. Este dura meses, anos, a luta às vezes dura poucos minutos. Meu objetivo no MMA é chegar ao topo, quero muitos cinturões. Não foi à toa que eu fiz a luta reserva no GP do Bitteti Combat 10 e também no BC 11 (GP até 70kg). Se alguém não pudesse continuar, eu estava lá faminto para entrar. De qualquer forma, não faço planos, gosto de lutar.

Nessa foto que você nos enviou parece ter baixado um tailandês ali. Como funciona sua cabeça no MMA?

Na verdade nada baixa ou vem de graça. Eu treino boxe tailandês há muito tempo, desde 1995, na Academia Brazilian Fight, com Osiris Maia. Tenho a honra de ter recebido duas faixas-pretas desse grande mestre, a de Jiu-Jitsu e de boxe tailandês. Não esqueço do Ricardo Tinha, que afia minhas mãos no boxe. Estou ficando cada luta mais confiante para ir para cima. Na minha estreia, em 2011, acho que fui bem. Na minha segunda luta me achei bem mais preparado. Assim vou, treinando duro, lutando e evoluindo. Pretendo chegar ainda melhor na terceira. O cartel está ficando bom, duas lutas e dois nocautes no primeiro round.

O que o povo que vem do Jiu-Jitsu puro erra mais no MMA?

Apavorar-se e tentar botar para baixo de qualquer jeito. O objetivo do jogo do striker, além de contundir o adversário, é frustrar o lutador de chão nas suas investidas em botar para baixo. Se esse for o único recurso do lutador de solo ele vai se perder. Mesmo sendo especialista no chão, o atleta deve treinar ao ponto de se sentir confortável em pé, afinal é onde a luta começa.

O que você recomenda para policiais que querem exercer seu ofício com segurança?

Sempre estude os casos, aprenda e recicle seus conhecimentos. É fundamental estudar para aprender com os erros do passado. Analise os equívocos de terceiros, algo que infelizmente ocorre. Veja o que pode ser melhorado e, principalmente, tenha sempre bom senso. Essa expressão é essencial em tudo na vida, e não é diferente no trabalho policial.

Que técnica de defesa pessoal o policial deve dominar?

O policial deve evitar contundir o cidadão, e para isso não vejo nada melhor do que o Jiu-Jitsu. As posições de domínio da arte suave são excelentes para o trabalho policial. Obviamente, existem algumas diferenças, pois o policial não pode expor sua arma. É um diferencial para as posições tradicionais do Jiu-Jitsu. Acredito que, para o iniciante, praticar pelo menos três vezes na semana é o suficiente, até pelo excelente exercício físico que a luta proporciona.

An instructor at elite Brazilian police division CORE and a student of Professor Osiris Maia, Rio de Janeiro native Eduardo Herdy will enter his second outing in MMA on the 4th of May. This time the Jiu-Jitsu black belt will face Ronaldo Arada Milan in the Bitetti Combat Rocinha cage.

“I expect to go in there and win. I take this pre-fight stage very seriously, and the final outcome will be a result of that. I’ve learned that the fight begins well before the event. Dedication, abdication and overcoming hurdles are the ingredients. If I offered myself for the fight, you can be sure I’ll go in there well prepared,” said the police officer.

Having knocked out Fabio Nativo at Bitetti Combat 10, Herdy (undefeated in amateur boxing) now wants to show the crowd his MMA-geared Jiu-Jitsu.

“I’ve always been a fan of the submission-oriented and impassable guard of my teammate at Brazilian Fight team Antônio “Canudo” Sergio. I look for inspiration in him, and I’m ready to show my ground game too,” stated Herdy.

FIND YOUR GAME WITHOUT LIMITING YOUR JIU-JITSU

To the black belt one of his strengths in Jiu-Jitsu is his having managed to find where his game is best and not neglect the other aspects.

“I recommend Jiu-Jitsu and MMA fighters really work on passing guard, and to do so it’s really important that you have strong hips and legs; that really helps. My tip is to train, train a lot, and that way you’ll find where your game is strongest without neglecting the other fundamentals. I must stress that, even at black belt, you have to always look to evolve that much more,” he taught.

Besides Herdy’s match-up, the Bitetti Combat Rocinha card boasts an under-70 kg GP where the winner will have to fight thrice on a single night, like in the old days. In the running for the Grand Prix title are aces of the caliber of Mauricio Reis (BTT), Julio César Field (RFT) and Bruno Caveira (Minotauro Team), as well as Ceará State native Andrezinho Nogueira (Fighter Sport) and Argentina’s Luciano Izzy (Brazilian Fight), among others.

The tournament is set for May 4 at the Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha, and is an invitation-only event.

Instrutor da Coordenadoria de Recursos Especiais (Core) e pupilo do professor Osiris Maia, o policial carioca Eduardo Herdy faz sua segunda luta de MMA no próximo dia 4 de maio. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu desta vez enfrenta Ronaldo Arada Milan, na grade do Bitetti Combat Rocinha.

“Minha expectativa é entrar para ganhar. Levo esta fase pré-luta bem a sério e o resultado final é fruto disso, aprendi que a luta começa bem antes do evento. Dedicação, abdicação e superação são a receita. Se eu me propus a lutar, pode ter certeza que chegarei bem preparado”, garante o atleta da Polícia Civil do Rio.

Após a vitória por nocaute em cima de Fabio Nativo, no Bitetti Combat 10, Herdy (invicto em combates no boxe amador) quer mostrar ao público seu Jiu-Jitsu voltado para o MMA.

“Sempre fui um admirador da guarda finalizadora e intransponível do meu companheiro de treino da Brazilian Fight Antônio Sergio, o Canudo. Tento me inspirar nele e estou pronto para mostrar meu chão também”, contou Herdy.

Encontrar seu jogo sem se limitar no Jiu-Jitsu

Para o faixa-preta, um de seus pontos fortes no Jiu-Jitsu é ter conseguido encontrar os pontos mais fortes de seu jogo sem se descuidar dos demais aspectos.

“Aconselho o lutador de Jiu-Jitsu e MMA a afiar muito a passagem de guarda, e para isso o importante é ter o quadril e as pernas fortes, isso ajuda bastante. Minha dica é treinar, treinar muito e assim encontrar seu jogo forte sem descuidar de todos os fundamentos. É preciso reforçar sempre que, mesmo na faixa-preta, sempre se pode evoluir um pouco mais”, ensinou.

Além desse duelo, o Bitetti Combat Rocinha traz um GP até 70kg, onde o campeão vai precisar fazer três lutas na mesma noite, como no vale-tudo das antigas. Na briga pelo título, feras do naipe de Mauricio Reis (BTT), Julio César Field (RFT) e Bruno Caveira (Minotauro Team), além do cearense Andrezinho Nogueira (Fighter Sport) e do argentino Luciano Izzy (Brazilian Fight), entre outros.

O torneio será no dia 4 de maio, na quadra do Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha, em evento somente para convidados, mas com transmissão ao vivo pelo Canal Combate.

Rio de Janeiro native Amaury Bitetti, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt two-time absolute champion, will be promoting Bitetti Combat Rocinha on the 4th of May. The event will be held in the Rocinha favela of Rio de Janeiro and will feature an under-70 kg GP, where the champion will have to win three fights on a single night.

As with the early days of the UFC, the path to glory will be no walk in the park, but Argentina’s Luciano Izzy of team Brazilian Fight and the talented Mauricio Reis of BTT, Julio Cesar Field of RFT, Bruno Caveira of Minotauro team and Andrezinho Nogueira of Fighter Sport are all up to the task.

The black belt Andrezinho Nogueira, a strong candidate to win the title, is already training hard for the occasion in Fortaleza, and there he shared a slide back position ending with a footlock.

The trick? “You do the roll, but the leg remains; so you try move the body backwards.”

O carioca Amaury Bitetti, primeiro faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu campeão mundial absoluto, traz seu próximo torneio de MMA no dia 4 de maio, batizado de Bitetti Combat Rocinha. O evento será na quadra do complexo esportivo da Rocinha, e vai contar com um GP até 70kg, em que o melhor lutador terá de fazer três lutas no mesmo dia para ser campeão.

Como nos primórdios do UFC, a tarefa não será nada fácil. Na briga pelo título, feras como o argentino Luciano Izzy (Brazilian Fight) e os talentosos Mauricio Reis (BTT), Julio César Field (RFT) e Bruno Caveira (Minotauro Team), além do cearense Andrezinho Nogueira (Fighter Sport), entre outros.

O Bitetti Combat Rocinha está programado para 21h, num evento somente para convidados. Entretanto, quem ficar fora poderá assistir ao vivo pelo Canal Combate.

O faixa-preta Andrezinho Nogueira, candidato a abocanhar o título do Grand Prix, já treina a todo vapor em Fortaleza, e por lá ele mostrou uma saída para a pegada pelas costas, que de quebra, termina com a finalização na chave de pé.

O macete? Ele diz: “Faça o rolamento, mas a perna fica, aí você procura tirar o tronco para trás”.

A festa na sede do time, em Botafogo, reuniu mais de cem pessoas, entre eles um dos personagens da última edição de GRACIEMAG, o policial Eduardo Herdy. Além dele, amigos e alunos do mestre, como o DJ faixa-preta Mauricio Carneiro “Saddam” e os professores Felipe Frank, Fabio Alves Tom-b, João Filho, Dênis Machado, Xandão e Jorge Neném, entre outros.

No total, 17 graduações, com cinco novos faixas-marrons e nenhum preta – sinal de que o mestre campeão continua exigente. Parabéns a todos.

Bitetti Combat 10 treated a packed house to some excellent fights this Saturday at Bogafogo club in Rio de Janeiro. One of the biggest standouts of the night, André Chatuba won the under-77kg (welterweight) GP by beating three opponents, while police officer Eduardo Herdy kicked off his MMA career on the right foot, with a knockout on his maiden outing. With a splendid knockout of his own, Ismael Marmota won the evening’s superfight.

Policeman Eduardo Herdy faced Fabio Native in a heavily-anticipated matchup. The fight started out with fast-paced standup. Herdy landed solid shots and dropped his opponent groggy to the canvas with a cross right on the button. Nativo did manage to get to his feet but was too dizzy to continue.

Next up was the opening round of the welterweight GP. In making it to the grand finale, André Chatuba first had to overcome a game Ivan Batman. The two-round fight had to go to a third round to determine the winner. Pushing the pace in the decisive round, Chatuba went through via unanimous decision. In his second of the night, the Team Nogueira representative came up against the seasoned Edilberto Crocotá, who went into the bout following an arm-triangle finish. André landed takedown after takedown, dominated the action on the ground, and again went through via unanimous decision – this time only needing the regulation two rounds.

At the other end of the bracket an undersized Julian Jabá took a split decision over Gerson Conceição and then a unanimous decision over Cesar Merenda. In the grand three-round finale, Jabá was more effective in the opening round, landing strikes and making it to back mount. In the second round, Chatuba took over, getting his game to click and landing more of his effective takedowns. In the third and final round, Jabá started out better in the standup department but Chatuba again got the takedown and followed up with his trademark move, the arm-triangle. Thus, Chatuba took the promotional welterweight belt.

In the superfight, Ismael Marmota made quick work of Alexandre Macaco. During an intense exchange of punches, Marmota landed a right cross that dropped his opponent unconscious to the ground.

Wrapping up the action, BTT’s Maurício Reis landed countless takedowns and dominated with ground and pound to beat Argentina’s Luciano Izzy. Also from Murilo Bustamante’s team, Danilo Pelezinho knocked out Elton Teixeira in the opening round.

O Bitetti Combat 10 contou com bom público e boas lutas neste sábado, no clube do Botafogo, no Rio de Janeiro. Entre os destaques da noite, André Chatuba foi o campeão do GP 77kg, depois de bater três adversários, enquanto o policial da Core Eduardo Herdy nocauteou bonito na estreia no MMA. Quem também conseguiu um belo nocaute foi Ismael Marmota, na superluta.

Contenda muito aguardada, o policial Eduardo Herdy teve pela frente Fabio Nativo. A luta começou bem movimentada, com muita trocação. Herdy conectou bons socos e, com um cruzado certeiro, derrubou o oponente, que caiu grogue. Nativo ainda se levantou, mas estava bem zonzo e não pode prosseguir.

Logo em seguida começou o GP. Para chegar à decisão, André Chatuba primeiro teve que bater o duro Ivan Batman. A luta foi truncada e precisou do round extra. Neste, Chatuba procurou mais o combate e acabou levando a melhor por decisão unânime. No segundo desafio, o representante da Team Nogueira teve pela frente o experiente Edilberto Crocotá, que vinha de um triunfo por finalização (katagatami). André aplicou boas quedas, trabalhou bem no chão e passou novamente por decisão unânime.

Do outro lado da chave, Julian Jabá passou por Gerson Conceição por decisão dividida e depois por Julio Cesar Merenda, nesta por decisão unânime dos jurados. Na decisão do GP, Jabá foi mais efetivo na primeira parcial com socos e uma pegada de costas. No segundo assalto, Chatuba reagiu e conseguiu encaixar o seu jogo, com boas quedas. No terceiro e decisivo assalto, Jabá começou melhor na trocação, mas André Chatuba tratou de derrubar e finalizou com a sua especialidade, o triângulo de braço. O lutador faturou o cinturão 77kg do evento.

Na superluta, Ismael Marmota não precisou de muito tempo para bater Alexandre Macaco. Numa trocação intensa de socos, Marmota encaixou um cruzado que acabou com as chances do oponente, que tombou desacordado.

Para completar o card, Maurício Reis, da BTT, conseguiu boas quedas e trabalhou bem no ground and pound para derrotar o argentino Luciano Izzy. Também pela equipe de Murilo Bustamante, Danilo Pelezinho nocauteou Elton Teixeira no primeiro assalto. Confira todos os resultados:

This Saturday, policeman Eduardo Herdy, 33, will be making his MMA debut. An instructor for elite Brazilian police force CORE and a student of one of Carlson Gracie’s 109 black belts, Osiris Maia, Herdy is set to take on Fabiano Conceição at Bitetti Combat 10.

“I like challenges, I like fighting. Martial arts have been a part of me throughout my life. I started when I was four years old and haven’t stopped since. I don’t feel age will be an obstacle for me in MMA, I’m prepared for the fight, that’s what matters,” he guarantees.

Undefeated in amateur boxing and holding a number of gentle art titles, Herdy compares fighting with his work on the police force. “Being an instructor in the Rio de Janeiro police is being able to merge two of my life choices, being a fighter and being a police officer. I’m driven by adrenaline. That’s where my stimulus for doing MMA comes from,” recounts Herdy, who literally has a battalion behind him in training.

“I want to thank the Polícia Civil for the support, as well as my masters Osiris Maia and Ricardo Tinha, all my training partners, my nutritionist Adriana Tannure, my physical conditioning coach Ítablo Vilardo, and my friends Gabriel Willcox, Raphael Abi-Rihan and Felipe Frank,” he said in finishing.
