Thursday featured a number of great matches and some surprises at the Abu Dhabi World Pro. Four-time world Jiu-Jitsu champion at featherweight Rubens Charles “Cobrinha”, for example, competed in the division above his. He didn’t do half badly against the under-74 kg fighters, only stopping at three-time world champion Celso Venícius in the semifinal.

This Friday is time to kick off the absolute, and Cobrinha promises to make things rough on everyone in the division.

“I lost the semifinal to Celso by decision. Today I’m going into the absolute,” said the black belt over Twitter (@CobrinhaCharles), and invited everyone to watch his match.

A quinta-feira trouxe grandes combates e algumas surpresas em Abu Dhabi, nas disputas do World Pro. O tetracampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu no peso pena Rubens Charles Cobrinha, por exemplo, lutou na categoria de cima. Entre os atletas de 74kg, não foi mal, parado apenas na semifinal, pelo tricampeão mundial Celsinho Venícius.

Nesta sexta, é a vez de iniciar o absoluto, e Cobrinha promete atrapalhar a vida dos outros na categoria.

“Perdi na semifinal para o Celsinho, por decisão dos juízes. Hoje vou lutar no absoluto”, diz o faixa-preta pelo seu Twitter (@CobrinhaCharles), além de convidar todos para ver a sua luta.

Weight and open weight winner and big standout at the 2010 World Pro Claudio Calasans will see action at the San Diego qualifiers for the event. The Atos black belt is yet another beast confirmed to be there alongside Guilherme Mendes, Clark Gracie, Rodrigo Caporal and Joel Tudor, among others, at the event to take place March 5 and 6 at Point Loma High School.

February 28 is the cut-off for sign-ups for the event guaranteeing all-expenses-paid trips to thirteen winners of the adult division at April’s World Pro, as well as a ticket to Abu Dhabi for the No-Gi absolute winner.  Click here to find out more. It is worth remembering that only at the tryouts organized by Fernando Paradeda (Las Vegas, San Diego and Gramado) are there No-Gi, master, and juvenile divisions.

“I want to advise people that they should sign up quickly, as there’s great demand and space is limited. And also to avoid any confusion. Our event is going to take place March 5 and 6. There’s an ADCC qualifier coming up, but it has nothing to do with our organization,” explains Fernando Paradeda.

Campeão peso e absoluto, sendo o maior destaque do World Pro em 2010, Claudio Calsans estará em ação na seletiva de San Diego para o evento. O faixa-preta da Atos é mais uma fera confirmada ao lado de Guilherme Mendes, Clark Gracie, Rodrigo Caporal e Joel Tudor, entre outros, no evento que acontece nos dias 5 e 6 de março, no ginásio da Point Loma High School .

As inscrições para o evento, que garante os custos de 13 campeões do adulto para o World Pro, em abril, além de dar uma passagem para Abu Dhabi ao campeão do absoluto sem kimono, vão até o dia 28 de fevereiro. Para saber mais clique aqui. Vale lembrar que apenas nas seletivas organizadas por Fernando Paradeda (Las Vegas, San Diego e Gramado) há disputas nas categorias sem kimono, master e infantil.

“Queria avisar ao pessoal para garantir logo a inscrição, pois estamos tendo grande procura e as vagas são limitadas. Além disso, para não se confundirem. Nosso evento é nos dias 5 e 6 de março. Há uma seletiva do ADCC em data próxima, mas não tem nada a ver com a nossa organização”, explica Fernando Paradeda.

This Saturday in Abu Dhabi the 2010 installment of the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup came to an end. This time around the big name was Claudio Calasans, who won at weight and even took home the 20 thousand dollars awarded the winner of the open weight class.

The man of the event

In the main division (absolute), Calasans defeated Alexandre Souza in the semifinal by an advantage point. Displaying versatility in playing both on top and on bottom, the black belt nearly got the sweep from the X-guard. At the other end of the bracket, Braulio Estima defeated Gabriel Vella, also by an advantage point, in a battle without much by way of excitement. In the grand decider of the day, victory went to the Atos representative, who scored three advantages on Carcara and ended with a snug armbar on his opponent. All that was left to do was for Calasans to celebrate.

Before that, the fighter had already beat Braulio, but in the under 83kg category. At the end of the match, he tied with a sweep and took the gold.

Demente returns loss

Beaten by Gabriel Vella in the absolute, Ricardo Demente made no mistakes in the over 92kg division final. Losing by advantages, Demente swept and secured gold

Ceconi still on a roll

Alexandro Ceconi defeated Romulo Barral in the final seconds by 3 to 2 on the scorecards. Barral swept and attacked the back, but Ceconi passed guard in the waning moments. Romulo disagrees with the points. According to him, the position was not stabilized. Nevertheless, he’ll have to live with it, as the gold and money go to Alexandro.

Durinho tops under 74kg

Gilbert Durinho was impressive at the qualifiers in Rio, winning a riveting match against Celso Venicius. In Abu Dhabi, the two faced off again, and Durinho got the best of the encounter one more time. Claudio Caloquinho won the Gramado tryouts and made it to the final in Abu Dhabi with first-rate Jiu-Jitsu. In the decider, Durinho captured yet another gold medal for Atos, with a sweep in another breathtaking match.

Brother vs brother

And the gold medalist of the under 65kg division was Rafael Mendes, who faced brother Guilherme. The score was 4 to 2. But what was most striking was the bros’ supremacy, making it to yet another final together; something they’ve been doing since blue belt.

Gabrielle Garcia on top

After a spotless Jiu-Jitsu Pan campaign, winning at weight and open weight, the Alliance representative remains at the top. Gabrielle Garcia defeated Luzia Fernandes in the over-63kg decider by 8 to 2, with two reverse mounts to one takedown from Luzia, who opened the scoring.

Victorious rematch

At the Gramado qualifiers, Beatriz Mesquita got the best with the shortened match duration. Again no points were scored, but this time it was Luanna Alzuguir who prevailed. The Alliance athlete beat Bia by judges’ decision after 0  to 0 and 6 regulation minutes.
