O lutador e professor de Jiu-Jitsu Renzo Gracie tem uma frase que, se Lyoto Machida e Dan Henderson não conhecem, deviam gravar.

Pois é praticamente o lema da carreira de ambos os supercraques do MMA, que devem fazer o evento coprincipal do próximo dia 23 de fevereiro, no UFC 157, em Anaheim, Califórnia – e não mais no UFC 156 do Super Bowl. Quem vencer, entra em inevitável rota de colisão com o campeão da categoria meio-pesado, Jon Jones. O evento ainda não tem luta principal, segundo o repórter Ariel Helwani, do MMAFighting.com.

Mas o que interessa é que o embate será em fevereiro de 2013. Como ensinou Renzo Gracie, em entrevista publicada faz tempo em GRACIEMAG:

“Não há melhor jeito de comprovar suas qualidades do que contra os melhores. Se um cara afirma que é o melhor do mundo, é para cima dele que você deve ir, e não em outra direção”, disse o Gracie.

É um lema, inclusive, que pode ecoar ainda na cabeça de GSP, ou de Anderson Silva, ou de Jon Jones, mas isso é outro papo.

Com Dan Henderson e Lyoto Machida, a lição sempre valeu. Hendo, desde os tempos do Pride, jamais recusou um oponente pedreira. Em sua última luta, há precisamente um ano, foi com tudo para cima de Mauricio Shogun, ficando com a vitória mesmo após terminar a luta montado e espancado, no UFC 139.

E o que falar de Lyoto, que topava qualquer luta ou desafio desde o início de sua carreira, claro, contanto que houvesse tempo para treinar. Quando o bicho-papão Sokoudjou surgiu, por exemplo, o empresário Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães o ligou no meio de sua lua-de-mel para oferecer a luta. Lyoto topou sem pedir para pensar.

Fighter and Jiu-Jitsu professor Renzo Gracie has a saying that Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson should take note of, if they’re not familiar with it yet.

It has pretty much been the theme of the careers of the two MMA aces, who are tipped to face off in the co-main event at UFC 157 on February 23 in Anaheim, California—no longer at UFC 156 on Super Bowl weekend. The winner will be on an inevitable collision course with the champion of the light heavyweight division, Jon Jones. The show is still lacking a marquee fight, according to MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani.

But what matters is that the fight will indeed be going down in February 2013. As Renzo Gracie preached in a GRACIEMAG interview a while back:

“There’s no better way to prove how good you are than against the best. If a guy says he’s the best in the world, it’s in his direction that you’d better be gunning, not elsewhere,” said the Gracie.

It’s an adage that should echo in GSP’s head, or Anderson Silva’s, or Jon Jones’s—but that’s a different issue.

As far as Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida are concerned, the lesson is quite pertinent. Ever since back in his days at Pride FC, Henderson has never turned down a first-rate opponent. For his last fight, exactly one year ago, he took on Mauricio Shogun at UFC 139 and won, even after getting mounted and pounded on as the final frame of the fight drew to a close.

And there’s plenty to be said about Lyoto, who has accepted all comers ever since his career began, so long as he had able time to train, of course. When the dreaded Sokoudjou came on the scene, for instance, Lyoto’s manager Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães called him during his honeymoon to offer the fight. Lyoto didn’t think twice before accepting.

So how does one forge such a mind, driven as theirs are? That’s precisely what the issue of GRACIEMAG currently on bookstands addresses.

It’s a classic question that has been around throughout the history of MMA, vale-tudo or whatever the next name denominating the sport to arise is.

All is takes is for a monster like Fedor Emelianenko, Anderson Silva or Jon Jones to show up on the scene and fans get worked up into a frenzy and some hyperbolic commentator states, “He can’t lose even with both his hands tied!” Or, “It would take two opponents at the same time to beat the champion!”

Fighting in twos (or more) is the stuff of Bruce Lee flicks, or pro wrestling. But it really does happen in real life.

Last decade, word of an epic altercation involving Carlos Newton got around. As the story goes, the former UFC and Pride FC star was left alone to defend himself against 12 aggressors, even seeking refuge behind the counter of a restaurant, flinging kitchen items to protect himself, according to witnesses—just like in the movies. And also like in the movies, the Canadian submission ace survived relatively unscathed.

Now as for layman fights, everyone has had their own experience. The question here has to do with Jiu-Jitsu as self-defense. As salvation in extreme cases, and for curiosity’s sake too, of course.

For example: Could Jon Jones, the best light heavyweight in the UFC today, easily overcome a pair of skinny guys like, say, the brothers Rafael and Guilherme Mendes in a real fight situation.

To MMA coach and Jungle Fight-promotion kingpin Luis “Bebeo” Duarte, Jon Jones wouldn’t stand a chance in a Jiu-Jitsu match. In MMA, though, things are a lot hairier. “The first one would fall with his ribs caved in within seconds, and the other would have to get out of there quick,” quips the Carlson Gracie black belt.

“I CAN’T SEE A WAY TO BEAT JON JONES”

To the brothers such a task would be a tall order indeed. That’s right, Rafa and Gui’s money would be on Jones for this one. “Shoot, I can’t see how we would beat him—not even the both of us together!” says Rafael with a laugh. “That would be a tough strategy to put together. The thing to do would be for one of us to get in the line of fire and get knocked out while the other one latches on to his legs. Maybe a back take or footlock might come of it. One is the decoy, the other tangles up with him.”

Would it really be all that easy for the darling of the UFC? To at least one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teacher, no, it wouldn’t. Quite the contrary.

“To give Jones his props, out of ten fights, I’d say he’d win one of them. The Mendeses would win nine.” That’s the take of Claudinho Arrais, a Rilion Gracie student and co-promoter of IBJJF tournaments in Southern Brazil. He means what he says. And he has experience backing him up.

“TWO USUALLY BEATS ONE” SAYS THE TEACHER

In 1996, Claudinho accompanied Rilion on a visit to Royce Gracie’s academy in Torrance, California. A post-training debate arose, whether a seasoned black belt could beat two less experienced practitioners. There wasn’t a question about it in Rilion’s mind at all. He called his nephew Igor Gracie and a partner over to take on an incredulous big guy, who thought putting away two 13-year-olds would be child’s play. The lumbering fellow donned boxing gloves. The fledgling pair were forbidden to hit, just grapple.

The first clash saw the two hovering around, one on each side, adrenaline pumping. When one would close the distance on one side, the other would dart onto the hulking fellow’s back. The young duo won by rear-naked choke. The defeated said he only lost because he was afraid to hurt them, promising to make it count the second time around. That time, it was even quicker and easier—another loss via choke.

“When your attack is focused on one, the other has loads of room to grab on. It’s not all that easy to knock someone out. Between two experienced fighters, two always beats one, no matter how big he is. Jon Jones wouldn’t stand a chance,” asserts Claudinho.

É uma questão clássica na história do vale-tudo, ou do MMA (ou do próximo nome que o esporte terá em algumas décadas).

Basta aparecer um monstro como Fedor Emelianenko, ou Anderson Silva, ou agora Jon Jones, que o fã se excita, e o comentarista mais engraçadinho faz bravata: “Esse aí não perde nem com um dos braços amarrados!”. Ou então, “Só dois ao mesmo tempo para parar o campeão, amigo!”.

Lutar em duplas (ou mais) é coisa de filme de Bruce Lee, ou coisa do teatro do pro-wrestling. Mas acontece na vida real.

Na década passada, ficou famoso um causo do então astro do UFC e do Pride Carlos Newton, que numa confusão num restaurante teria sido obrigado a encarar 12 ao mesmo tempo. Segundo as testemunhas que juram que tudo aconteceu, o lutador canadense saiu-se muito bem, obrigado – apesar dos pratos e talheres lançados por cima do balcão.

Mas briga de leigo cada um que lembre a sua. O que está em questão aqui é o Jiu-Jitsu como defesa pessoal. Como salvação num caso extremo, e como curiosidade também, claro.

Por exemplo. Seria Jon Jones, o melhor meio-pesado do UFC hoje, capaz de superar com facilidade uma dupla de magrelos, vejamos, como os irmãos Rafael e Guilherme Mendes numa situação real?

Para o treinador de MMA e cartola do Jungle Fight Luis “Bebeo” Duarte, Jon Jones não teria a menor chance numa luta de Jiu-Jitsu. No MMA, porém, a coisa engrossaria. “O primeiro cairia com uma costela arriada em segundos, e aí o outro ia precisar sair correndo”, brinca o faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie.

“Não vemos jeito de ganhar do Jon Jones”

Para os próprios manos, a coisa seria bem complicada. Sim, Rafa e Gui apostariam em Jon Jones nesta. “Caramba, não vejo jeito de a gente ganhar dele, nem os dois juntos!”, ri Rafael. “É uma estratégia difícil de montar. O jeito é um de nós se dispor a ser nocauteado, enquanto o outro se embola nas pernas dele. Quem sabe não sai uma pegada de costas ou uma chave de pé? Sim, porque botar para baixo não vai dar, então acho que esta é a única alternativa. Um é o alvo, o outro se embola”.

Seria tão fácil assim para o queridinho do UFC? Para pelo menos um professor de Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro, não. Muito pelo contrário.

“Para dar uma moral para o Jones, em dez lutas, eu digo que ele venceria uma. Os Mendes venceriam nove”. É a aposta de Claudinho Arrais, aluno de Rilion Gracie e co-organizador de campeonatos de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF no Sul do Brasil. Ele diz isso a sério. E com conhecimento de causa.

“Dois normalmente ganham de um”, diz professor

Em 1996, Claudinho foi com Rilion visitar Royce Gracie na academia de Torrance. O debate após o treino passou a ser este, de que um faixa-preta experiente poderia vencer dois praticantes mais novos. Rilion não teve dúvidas. Chamou o sobrinho Igor Gracie e um coleguinha, e convidou o incrédulo grandão, que achou que seria brincadeira de criança afugentar dois molecotes de 13 anos. O casca-grossa vestiu a luva de boxe. Os dois não podiam bater, era só agarrar.

Na primeira, os dois vieram ciscando, um de cada lado, a adrenalina a mil. Quando um se aproximava por um lado, o outro já pegava as costas. Vitória da duplinha no mata-leão. O derrotado disse que perdeu porque teve medo de machucá-los, e prometeu ir com tudo na segunda. Foi ainda mais rápido e fácil – outra derrota por finalização, no estrangulamento.

“Enquanto os ataques estão voltados para um, o outro tem muito espaço para agarrar. Nocautear não é assim tão simples. Entre lutadores experientes, dois sempre ganham de um, não importa o tamanho. Jon Jones não teria chance”, garante Claudinho.

Novo evento de MMA, o Impact FC realizou a primeira edição neste sábado, em Brisbane, na Austrália. O card veio com grandes nomes do MMA mundial e outros candidatos a brilhar na modalidade.

Nos combates mais aguardados, Josh Barnett não deu chance ao brasileiro Geronimo Mondragon e nocauteou com socos em apenas 2min35s de luta. Veterano com passagem pelo UFC, Carlos Newton perdeu na decisão para Brian Ebersole.

Também foram bem Rameau Sokoudjou, que nocauteou Joaquim Mamute; Jeff Monson, que bateu Ubiratan Lima; e Karo Parisyan, que finalizou Bem Mortimer.
