The WPJJC Trials are underway the world over. This past Saturday, November 10, it was Auckland, New Zealand’s turn to determine which of their grappling aces will receive all-expenses-paid travel to Abu Dhabi in April for the main event.

And the big name of the tournament was Bruno Alves, the Gracie Barra Sydney rep outdoing William Dias of GBJJ/Nova União.

Bruno had his work cut out for him in getting there, as you can see in the video below. In the semifinal, Bruno took on Jonathan Bell (Tu Kaha), and passed his guard before sinking an armbar. Note how he maintains his hold on the arm while using his other arm to grab the opponent’s leg and prevent him from escaping.

Also having secured their travel to the UAE: Alexander Scott (Vanderson Pires Jiu-Jitsu), the winner of the brown/black belt lightweight absolute; Brian Falzon (Roots Jiu-Jitsu), number 1 in the purple belt absolute; and Tony Torrisi (Garra BJJ), gold in the blue belt absolute. Lorna Lock (Dominance MMA) dominated the female white-blue belt absolute, and Joseph Hill (Douglas JJ) won the white belt absolute.

As seletivas para o WPJJC estão a todo vapor pelo mundo afora. No último sábado, 10 de novembro, a peneira aconteceu em Auckland, na Nova Zelândia.

E o grande nome do torneio foi o pernambucano Bruno Alves (Gracie Barra Sydney), que na final do absoluto marrom/preta pesado superou William Dias (GBJJ/Nova União) e ganhou a passagem e o pacote com tudo pago para lutar o evento principal do WPJJC, que rola em abril de 2013, em Abu Dhabi.

Bruno teve de ralar para chegar lá, como você vê no vídeo abaixo. Na semifinal, Bruno encarou Johnathan Bell (Tu Kaha), e teve calma para passar a guarda e encaixar o armlock. Repare que ele mantém a pegada no braço e, com a outra mão, segura na perna do adversário, impedindo a fuga.

Também garantiram a viagem com tudo pago para os Emirados Árabes: Alexander Scott (Vanderson Pires Jiu-Jitsu), campeão absoluto marrom/preta leve; Brian Falzon (Roots Jiu-Jitsu), o melhor do aberto roxa; e Tony Torrisi (Garra BJJ), ouro no absoluto azul. Lorna Lock (Dominance MMA) dominou o aberto branca/azul feminino e Joseph Hill (Douglas JJ) venceu o aberto faixa-branca.

Gracie Barra Pernambuco rep Bruno Alves didn’t have it easy at the World Pro tryouts in the northeastern Brazilian town of Natal this past weekend. Alves won five matches in becoming champion of the tryouts, and he addresses the event with GRACIEMAG.com:

What did you think of the level of competition, with so many athletes from the region, the Brazilian Northeast?

Some folks come here thinking it will be easy to win here in the Northeast, but it was as tough as any other World Pro qualifier. My bracket was perhaps the toughest of all, with a real burly bunch from here and the Southeast, like Adriano Silva. It wasn’t easy, it was through the hard work I’ve been doing with Master Zé Radiola that I was able to win. I’ll be in Abu Dhabi again, and making sure of it so early is awesome!

What will you be doing to make sure you take the title in Abu Dhabi?

I have to keep doing what I’m doing, but I obviously have to look at what I did wrong and evolve. I think there are a lot of things I can improve on standing and playing on top. Master Zé Radiola knows what I need to do to be sharper when I get there.

Do you plan on joining other of the team’s representatives to prepare, maybe others from Pernambuco, like Bráulio and Vitor Estima?

Zé is the one coordinating the Gracie Barra competition team, so I think he’ll put something like that together for me. The guys should indeed get together before events like the European Open, the Pan and the Worlds. Everyone is also focused on Gracie Barra getting farther in competition as a team.

You mentioned three major IBJJF events. Do you plan to compete at all of them next year?

I plan on competing at the Pan, the European Open, the Worlds. Besides the World Pro, in 2012 I want to be at all the big competitions. This year I’ve already competed a lot, all over the place, and I plan on keeping it up.

Representante da Gracie Barra em Pernambuco, Bruno Alves não teve moleza na Seletiva do World Pro, em natal, no último final de semana. O lutador, que fez cinco lutas para ser campeão, conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com.

O que achou do nível da competição, que contou com muitos atletas da sua região, o Nordeste do Brasil?

Algumas pessoas pensam que ganhar aqui no Nordeste é mais fácil, mas foi duro como qualquer seletiva do World Pro. A minha chave talvez tenha sido uma das mais duras, contra uma galera pesada daqui e outros do Sudeste, como o Adriano Silva. Não foi fácil e isso é fruto do trabalho que estou fazendo com o mestre Zé Radiola. Estarei em Abu Dhabi novamente e estar garantido tão cedo é maravilhoso!

O que vai fazer para buscar esse título em Abu Dhabi?

Tenho que continuar o que estou fazendo, mas, claro, tenho que ver o que fiz de errado e evoluir. Acho que tenho muitas coisas que posso evoluir na parte em pé e jogando por cima. O mestre Zé Radiola sabe o que fazer para chegar lá mais afiado.

Pretende se unir com mais lutadores da equipe na preparação, quem sabe com outros atletas de Pernambuco como o Bráulio e o Vitor Estima?

O Zé agora está coordenando a parte de competição da Gracie Barra, então acho que ele vai organizar algo nesse sentido para mim. Aliás, o pessoal deve se unir sempre antes dos eventos como Europeu, Pan e Mundial. Todos estaremos também com o foco de a Gracie Barra chegar mais longe nas competições.

Você falou em três dos grandes eventos da IBJJF. Pretende participar de todos no próximo ano?

Pretendo lutar o Pan, Europeu e Mundial. Além do World Pro, em 2012 quero estar nos campeonatos fortes. Neste ano já lutei muito, lutei por todo o mundo. Rodei bastante e vou continuar assim.

This Sunday saw the winners of the very first tryouts for the 2012 World Pro materialize, in Natal, Brazil. After qualifying for two finals on Sunday, Leandro Lo cemented his place at the top by winning both. With the result, the Cícero Costha student earned his all-expenses-paid trip to Abu Dhabi for the finals and a 2,000-dollar bonus to boot.

In the under-74kg division, Lo overcame local ace Bruno Ramos (Nine Nine) by passing guard, getting knee on belly, and finishing neatly with an armbar. Now in the absolute, against André Simões, Leandro swept thrice, passed guard and got knee on belly, winning by a score of 11-2.

But Leandro Lo wasn’t the only one who caught attention. The final that livened up the crowd most was the one between Thiago Barreto (#One JJ/Brasa) and Jussier Formiga (Kimura), both hometown 65kg competitors. Thiago started out using his guard-playing savvy to get a sweep, which Formiga returned in kind. It stayed at a draw, however, a triangle attempt from Barreto in the waning moments earned a judges’ decision in his favor.

In the under-84kg division, Gracie Barra whiz Bruno Alves worked his guard-playing magic on Adeildo José (GFTeam). Alves swept twice and controlled the run of play till the end.

Caio Magalhães, the winner of this year’s Rio Open, divides his time between Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. The Sas JJ black belt did well to contain the attacks of Fabiano Boi (Alliance), who had submitted everyone in his way until then. With an advantage point from early in the match, Caio rode out the match on top and took the gold and berth in Abu Dhabi.

Also earning his way to the Arab Emirates, Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” had to topple giants in getting there, having opted to compete in the over-92kg division. Antonio came up against 2010’s winner, Caio Alencar, and managed to sweep and take back mount. He had to work free from an omoplata but kept the score in his favor.

In the female division, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) overcame Fernanda Mazelli in the over-63kg weight class. Luiza started out losing by a takedown but then swept and passed guard. Now in the lighter weight group, Marina Ribeiro (CheckMat) defeated Bruna Ribeiro (Atos). The black belt took back mount and finished up with a choke.

Neste domingo foram definidos os campeões da primeira Seletiva do World Pro 2012, em Natal. Depois de se classificar para duas finais no sábado (confira a cobertura do sábado clicando aqui), Leandro Lo se sagrou como destaque do evento, tendo faturado peso e absoluto. Com o resultado, o pupilo de Cícero Costha viaja com tudo pago a Abu Dhabi, além de engordar a conta bancária em 2 mil dólares.

Na final da categoria 74kg, Lo bateu a fera local Bruno Ramos (Nine Nine). Para isso, o faixa-preta passou a guarda, colocou o joelho na barriga, montou e finalizou com uma chave de braço. Já no absoluto, contra André Simões, Leandrinho raspou três vezes, passou a guarda e colocou o joelho na barriga, tendo anotado 11 a 2 no placar.

Mas as atenções não se voltaram apenas para Leandro Lo. A final que mais agitou a torcida foi entre Thiago Barreto (#One JJ/Brasa) e Jussier Formiga (Kimura), ambos lutadores de Natal, no peso 65kg. Thiago, que conta com uma guarda dura de passar, começou raspando, Formiga devolveu na mesma moeda. Permaneceu o empate, mas valeu uma tentativa de triângulo de Barreto nos últimos segundos para a decisão dos juízes a seu favor.

Na categoria 84kg, a fera da Gracie Barra Bruno Alves usou a poderosa guardinha contra Adeildo José (GFTeam). Alves raspou duas vezes e soube controlar a luta nos últimos minutos. Ao fim, com o passaporte carimbado, só restou comemorar com o mestre Zé Radiola..

Caio Magalhães, que neste ano foi campeão do Rio Open, se divide entre o Jiu-Jitsu e MMA. O faixa-preta da Sas JJ conseguiu controlar bem os ataques de Fabiano Boi (Alliance), que havia finalizado todos no evento, até então. Com uma vantagem nos primeiros momentos da disputa, Caio seguiu no jogo por cima e ficou com o ouro. Mais um garantido em Abu Dhabi.

Para também viajar com tudo pago e competir nos Emirados Árabes, Antonio Carlos, o Cara de Sapato, teve que passar por gigantes. Isso porque, mesmo abaixo do peso, a fera da CheckMat optou por lutar na categoria acima de 92kg. Contra o campeão do mesmo evento em 2010, Caio Alencar, Antonio raspou e depois pegou as costas. Teve que se livrar de uma justa chave omoplata, mas manteve o placar.

No feminino, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) bateu Fernanda Mazelli no peso acima de 63kg. Luiza começou perdendo por uma queda, mas depois raspou e passou a guarda. Já no peso inferior, Marina Ribeiro (CheckMat) derrotou Bruna Ribeiro (Atos). A faixa-preta pegou as costas e finalizou com um estrangulamento.

Bruno Alves, a student of Zé Radiola at Gracie Barra Pernambuco, was a finalist at the 2010 Rio Open, losing a hard-fought final against Luis Gustavo in the middleweight black belt division.

This year the promising Gracie Barra rep is targeting the title.

“I’ve competed a lot this year, at nearly all the championships, and I managed to make it to the podium in almost all of them. I ended up getting injured some weeks ago but, even so, I signed up. I couldn’t miss out on this one,” says Bruno.

“I’ve already checked the roster and it’s stacked. We’ll see what happens. I’m stoked just to be able to compete,” he adds.

Besides Bruno there are other stalwart Gracie Barra Pernambuco competitors signed up, like Willian Martins, José Ilson and Andre Galdino.

“Lutei bastante este ano, quase todos os campeonatos, e consegui chegar no pódio em quase todos. Acabei me contundindo nas últimas semanas,mas, mesmo assim, me inscrevi. Não poderia ficar de fora”, diz Bruno.

“Já vi a checagem e só tem pedreira. Vamos ver no que vai dar! Só de poder lutar já fico amarradão!”, completa a fera.

Além de Bruno, outras pedreiras da Gracie Barra Pe estão inscritas, atletas como Willian Martins, José Ilson, e Andre Galdino .
