A resposta, visivelmente perdida: “Branca, azul, vermelha, marrom…”.

Comente.
The post Roger Gracie e o UFC: “Não alcancei tudo o que consegui no Jiu-Jitsu só com vitórias” first appeared on Graciemag.

The post UFC não renova com Roger Gracie first appeared on Graciemag.

A London-based Jiu-Jitsu professor, Roger Gracie is going through a special moment in life.

Having signed with the UFC in January, the 31-year-old middleweight has two months to go until the birth of his first daughter, Maya. In the meantime, Roger is planning his routine for a new stage in his career: the life of UFC athlete.

Over the phone from England, the three-time absolute world champion of Jiu-Jitsu spoke of his plans and explained the arm-and-neck choke that sent him through to the UFC and the changes to his career from here on out.

GRACIEMAG.com: First, the unprecedented. Is it true that a slippery floor tile nearly knocked you out before the fight?

ROGER GRACIE: It’s true. It was a few hours before the Jan. 11 weigh-ins for Strikeforce in Oklahoma. I was doing my last sauna and tub session to make weight and slipped, fell flat on my face on the ground. It opened up a big cut on my forehead. I was fortunate that I was already at weight when I got out of the Jacuzzi. If I’d had to sweat any more it would have been rough because of the cut. Renzo [Gracie] quickly calmed me down and went to the pharmacy to buy Super Glue. We glued my forehead together, put a discreet Band-Aid on it and went to weigh in. The Strikeforce medic was suspicious, but since it looked like an old training cut, he let it pass (laughs).

And what went through your head when you went in to fight Anthony Smith knowing the cut could open at any moment?

Well, Renzo warned me that as soon as I’d grab onto the guy, in clinch or on the ground, the cut would probably open up. I knew that if he’d touch it there it would open, so that made me all the faster on the ground. In the first round, he didn’t land a punch, which calmed me down. In the second, when I landed on top, I felt three drops of blood come out. I got kind of worried the ref might notice and the doctor could stop the fight… But I managed to tap him out quick.

You tend to only leave mount when you’re sure you’ve got a hold in place in MMA. Did you feel the hold was 100 percent in?

The moment I took him down I went straight to pressuring him with my shoulder on his neck, and I could feel his breathing getting kind of iffy. I kept smothering him, got my arms in place and had faith it would pan out, and it did.

After finishing him did it strike you that you were through to the UFC? Did you think about that?

I was pleased that everything had gone well. But even before the fight, my manager, the famous Jorge Guimarães, had already put me at ease about that. “Joinha” is always talking with the folks at the UFC, and he told me that I was practically in. It was great to win, but I think I would have made it in anyways so long as I didn’t have a really bad fight. The UFC will likely absorb everybody. Even so, I’ve only got one fight left on my contract, so now we have to work on getting it renewed. After we sign, then we’ll think about opponents, if just because that’s the routine for a fighter, right? They could call on me to fight next month to substitute someone, or four months from now. You never know. All I know is I have to be trained and ready.

You’re always really calm. Does anything change in your mind now you’re in the UFC?

These days there aren’t any dilettantes in MMA anymore, much less in the UFC. So if I chose this to be part of my life, I know I have to dedicate myself to being the best I can be. If Strikeforce was tough, the UFC is even tougher, since the level is a lot higher and there are a lot more athletes with different games and strengths in my weight class. There’s a lot of competition. To think that with my Jiu-Jitsu I’ll go in there and tap everyone out is an exaggeration. I have to train a lot, learn more and improve in a number of aspects.

That means your training routine is going to change, right?

Yes. I understand that now I need to do all-around training to not stop progressing. So far I’ve been satisfied with the training I’ve been doing alone in London for most of the season, but now I know I have to spend a lot more time in New York with Renzo and in Los Angeles at Black House.

Is there anyone in particular you have in mind as an opponent to move you up the ranks in your weight division? Or are you in no hurry?

I’m in no hurry? I’ll take on anyone. Truth is, I don’t really have a choice. At Strikeforce I couldn’t pick, so in the UFC there’s no way. In Jiu-Jitsu we can start with a seemingly easy match and go working your way up. In the UFC you could very well be facing a former divisional champion for your debut fight.

Roger Gracie always mentions Rodrigo Minotauro as being an MMA role model of his. By the same token, Minotauro always says he’s a big fan of Gracie’s jiu-jitsu. After years of waiting, the two will finally have a chance to train together when the Gracie takes to Team Nogueira to prepare for his Jan. 12 fight on what is likely Strikeforce’s last card.

Though fans are beside themselves to see this training happen, Gracie’s manager and head of the Black House team, Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães, had a different idea about what the Gracie should be doing to get ready for his middleweight tilt against Anthony Smith.

“As Roger already had a trip to Brazil planned with his family, I just streamlined his going to Mino’s training center. Right now, Rogerio Minotouro is there training hard for his fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 156, and there are good sparring partners for him there. But I had a different idea at first. Truth is, I’m heading to London [where Gracie lives] to convince him and his family to change plans and go to Los Angeles,” said Joinha in a conversation with GRACIEMAG.com editor Marcelo Dunlop.

“What I think–and I told Roger this–is that he should train at Black House in Los Angeles with Lyoto and Glover. You should have seen the two training today… They too felt Roger was missing out by going to Brazil, with so many great sparring partners here,” admitted Joinha.

Joinha also addressed what will likely happen with the fighters on the Strikeforce roster.

“I think everyone’s going to go straight to the UFC,” he said. “Some may get cut, though. We’ll see.”

Widely regarded as the greatest medalist in Jiu-Jitsu World Championship history, Gracie was called on to compete at the farewell Strikeforce event with other high profile names like Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza, Daniel Cormier and Nate Marquardt.

Neste momento, eu pesquei o ponto genial de Lyoto, e me intrometi:

Lyoto concordou e continuou: “Exato.

The post Um estudo sobre MMA, tênis, Lyoto Machida, Roger Gracie e Federer first appeared on Graciemag.

Highly decorated Jiu-Jitsu champion Roger Gracie, 30, awaits Anderson Silva.

Hold your horses, it’s just that the two will now be training partners, as Roger’s over at Black House team headquarters in Compton, Los Angeles, with bated breath to see his training gain reinforcement from the champion—as well as from Fabricio Werdum, today’s birthday boy Wanderlei Silva, Coach Rafael Cordeiro, and other stars who were in Brazil.

Roger Gracie presently weighs 95kg, and he needs to hit the 84kg mark for his sixth career MMA fight, facing Keith Jardine on the coming 14th of July in Portland, Oregon at Strikeforce – Rockhold vs. Kennedy. Shedding those 11 kilos (24 lbs) is the easy part of his mission, though, according to Roger himself.

Coming off a knockout at the hands of King Mo, the Gracie has been training five hours a day with Lyoto Machida. All to fix just one of the mistakes he made: having held his left hand too low and his chin too high. To iron out his shortcomings he’s learned to walk in the ring better, as well as a few other little secrets.

Hopping into his car to go get a bite to eat, Roger had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com, addressing where he went wrong and right and Jiu-Jitsu for MMA, as well as the IBJJ Pro coming up in December. When will Roger be back competing in the gi? Find out hereunder.

How do you plan to lose 11 kilos by the 14th?

I’ve done it before and it isn’t a concern. What I’ll do is lose one or two kilos this week. A week from the fight I’ll dehydrate and lose nine, ten kilos.

This blend of karate and Jiu-Jitsu must be good. What’s it been like parrying strikes from Lyoto Machida?

Training with him has been great for me. He hops around like popcorn; it’s impressive (laughs). Besides being a complete fighter and really dedicated, Lyoto is one of the best, if not the best, in the UFC these days when it comes to how he moves on his feet. His unusual style and speed getting in and out with strikes has made me a lot keener on my feet. His feint and ability to come out of the blue with strikes surprises everyone. It’s been a great learning experience. Not to mention his wrestling, which is great. If I can get him down, I can get anyone down.

How has training at Black House in California been?

Here there are some really tough guys, like Kevin Casey, a Rickson Gracie student who’s really good on the ground. We work on everything, in all kinds of ways. There are times when all we do is work on takedowns, others when it’s all striking, others that are just on the ground. But there’s also striking to get the takedown, takedowns and grappling on the ground, etc. If you count the hours, I’ve done a lot less Jiu-Jitsu and more working on takedowns. But we’re getting me ready for any situation. The best part is that Lyoto’s going to have a fight in the UFC too, three weeks after my fight, against Ryan Bader. Training is being headed up by Pedro Munhoz while Rafael Cordeiro is in Brazil, and then there’s Adriano Camolesi, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt who’s got great hands.

You’d been training with Pedro Rizzo’s folks at Refinaria de Manguinhos, in Rio. What do you like most about those training sessions?

The structure there is great. But the best part is that they’re intelligent about training, aren’t trying to tear your head off, have nothing to prove. Obviously your opponent comes after you, trains hard. But it’s not that throwdown the whole time, where you run a risk of getting hurt. In professional MMA these days you can’t go doing things haphazardly. The days of training for MMA by going toe to toe with construction workers are long gone.

You’re coming off a knockout in your last fight. What further lessons do you hope to learn by training with Lyoto Machida, or Anderson Silva, who should show up there some day?

Well, Anderson didn’t come down; he went straight to Las Vegas. That was a shame. It would be great to train with him too. We haven’t trained together yet, but I think it would be awesome. I feel I learned a lot from the knockout. If you’re smart, you’re really going to learn a lot from defeat. And the first thing I learned was that I wasn’t as good on my feet as I thought I was (laughs).

What was your biggest mistake against King Mo?

I made a common mistake, one a lot of top Jiu-Jitsu guys make. We start training a lot on our feet and automatically get better. That results in a somewhat dangerous self-confidence, because standing you’re at most as good as the others, never better. So what I realize now is that I can’t let the idea of standing and trading take over. Never.

Have you looked at the tape of your opponent, Keith Jardine?

Yes. He’s a dangerous fighter but one who doesn’t switch up his style much. So I’m more concerned with myself right now.

Did you see the post on the GRACIEMAG.com website on the IBJJ Pro, the new tournament paying out cash prizes in California this December?

I think it’s great. It’ll draw some good ratings. The best will be there. But I think I’ll watch this first one from the sidelines, since I want to fight again before the end of the year. What I’m really bugged about is the Worlds. I want to be at the one in 2013 for sure. I’ve sat out two years now. There’s a new crop of competitors in there, and I want to get back in there.
The post MMA: Roger Gracie reveals what he learned training with Lyoto Machida first appeared on Graciemag.

A estrutura lá e aqui é ótima.

Vamos ver.

Reviu algumas lutas do Keith Jardine, seu oponente?

Sim.

The post MMA: Roger Gracie revela o que aprendeu nos treinos com Lyoto Machida first appeared on Graciemag.
