Em seus tempos áureos nos tatames, Rafael Mendes se consolidou como um lutador formidável que brilhou em ginásios no Brasil e ao redor do mundo. O hexacampeão mundial se dedica à formação de atletas ao lado do irmão Guilherme na Art of Jiu-Jitsu, em Costa Mesa, Califórnia, desde que anunciou a aposentadoria dos campeonatos, em 2017.

Desde então, o foco do astro passou a ser exclusivamente voltado ao desenvolvimento da escola e de seus alunos. Pupilo dos irmãos Mendes, o bicampeão mundial Tainan Dalpra, de 22 anos, tem encantado a comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu pelo estilo finalizador e sem brechas. Ele é o principal candidato ao título do peso-médio no Pan 2023, a ser disputado entre os dias 22 e 26 de março, em Kissimmee, Flórida. A façanha coroaria Tainan tricampeão do torneio da IBJJF na faixa-preta.

Tainan Dalpra provou em mais um campeonato que é o dono do peso médio. O pupilo dos irmãos Mendes dominou a categoria no Europeu 2023, disputado em Paris, e finalizou as três lutas que disputou sem sequer sofrer um ponto. O atleta da AOJ conquistou as vitórias por meio de estrangulamentos nas costas. No decorrer do torneio, ele finalizou Elder Junior, Lucas Protásio e Pavel Kalesnik para faturar o ouro. 

Tainan, de apenas 22 anos, tornou-se bicampeão europeu na faixa-preta e adicionou mais um título de expressão em seu vitorioso currículo. A dominância do prodígio no peso médio é tão evidente que ele se tornou o primeiro atleta desde 2013 a conquistar dois títulos mundiais seguidos na divisão. Antes, Otávio Ferreira, da Gracie Barra, alcançara a façanha ao vencer as edições de 2012 e 2013. 

Apesar de ter enfrentado adversários de alto nível, Tainan não tomou conhecimento dos oponentes. Na final, diante de Pavel, Dalpra precisou de 1min45s para liquidar a fatura. E construiu a vitória com certa naturalidade, frieza e maturidade digna de um campeão. Ele raspou, passou a guarda, pegou as costas e finalizou. 

O Europeu 2023 foi o primeiro passo da temporada de Tainan Dalpra. Ele retorna às competições no dia 3 de março, quando enfrenta Isaque Bahiense numa superluta de 30 minutos que será disputada no decorrer dos GPs da IBJJF, no Texas. Isaque o acompanhou em Paris e estudou o jogo do rival.

The young Thalison Soares, 23 years old, has always stood out not only for his techniques, but also for the way he acts and thinks outside the box. His attitudes were contemplated with unprecedented feats right at the beginning of his career.

At blue, purple, and brown belt, the manauara was the only athlete in history to win the IBJJF Grand Slam, a feat reserved only for athletes who win the European, Pan-American, Brazilian, and World Championships in the same year.

Success led Thalison to undertake and, shortly after receiving his black belt in June 2019, he decided to set up his first Jiu-Jitsu school in Australia.

After three years working in the sport’s elite, with titles at the European, Pan, and No-Gi Worlds, Thalison decided to take another important step in his career. To fight his second World Championship, he packed his bags and traveled to Art of Jiu-Jitsu in California to learn from Guilherme and Rafael Mendes.

For Thalison, accumulating experiences to be a better athlete and a businessman requires dedication and new challenges.

“My biggest goal has always been evolution and that’s what I’m looking for. AOJ is a very professional team and they have everything they need to make good things happen. I’ve learned a lot since I got here. My academy in Australia is doing well, this exchange I’m doing at AOJ will also make my academy grow. I’m glad my students are supporting me. The Mendes do everything with excellence, and I’m here looking to learn and evolve”, highlights Thalison.

The champion also wants to learn new concepts to apply in his career not only as an athlete but as a person.

“I am here to learn not only how to win, but the behavior I need to deal with competitions and how to act, speak, walk… I want to excel at everything and I see that here at AOJ they are examples of this”, he says, before closing.

There, he has already won the IBJJF San Diego Open, the last tournament before the 2022 World Championship.

Campeão mundial e astro do Jiu-Jitsu, Leandro Lo está de passagem pelos EUA e não deixou de manter vivo o espírito da arte suave de dividir o conhecimento. Em uma de suas paradas, o faixa-preta da Brotherhood esteve na academia Art Of Jiu-Jitsu, dos irmãos Rafael e Guilherme Mendes, e aproveitou para esmiuçar um pouco da sua passagem de guarda toureando.

Na atividade, tocada ao lado do atual campeão mundial na faixa-azul e hoje faixa-roxa Tainan Dalpra, Leandro detalhou como faz para controlar as pernas do adversário, atento à movimentação dos joelhos e quadril, para chegar com segurança na lateral do adversário.

Led by brothers Rafael and Guilherme Mendes, Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) conquered great results in the juvenile division. Last weekend, when the Dallas Open Jiu-Jitsu took place, AOJ athletes Tainan Dalpra, Sophia Flores and Liam Moss won double gold.

“2014 was my last year competing; since then I have been focusing 100% on AOJ and the competition team, and every competition that I bring my students to I see the work paying off. As a professor I learn a lot from every challenge they face and it has improved my Jiu-Jitsu a lot. Today we came with a small group of students and they all did really well. My student Rick Slomba won the black belt featherweight, Mason Monsevais won brown belt featherweight, and the 3 juveniles that I brought to this competition won double gold with amazing performances”, celebrated Gui Mendes

“Tainan Dalpra is 15 years old and fought up in division winning weight and open class, Sophia Flores won division and open class and Liam Moss also won his division and the open class; all three are Pan Ams & world champions and help me in the kids’ classes in the academy; write down these names because you guys will hear them a lot in the future. We have been doing the same style of training that me and Rafa did when we were blue belts and it’s working really well,” saidthe four-time world champion to Graciemag.com.

The 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship is knocking on our door.

Scheduled March 16*-20, the second most important event of the calendar should be once again one of the highlights of the year.

As competitors get ready to go, we decided to list a few options for you to improve your training experience leading up to the 2016 Pan.

Some of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu teams are organizing training camps.

Read below to know what you have to do to join the classes.

Gracie Barra: In Irvine, California, the red shield team will gather from March 12th to March 16th for five days of intensive training under no other than Master Carlos Gracie Jr. This camp is exclusive for GB students and the investment is $100. Click here to know more and to sign up now.

Caio Terra: In San Jose, California, Caio Terra is also inviting for a training camp for the 2016 Pan. It actually started this Monday, Feb. 29, and goes on until March 16. If you join it, you’ll be able to train with the likes of Caio, Yuri Simões, Kristina Barlaan, Victor Paschoal, Kim Terra, among others. The camp is open to all affiliations and the investment ranges from $55 for 1 day to $350 for the full camp. Click here to know more and register now.

Samir Chantre

Ares JJ/Soul Fighters: The two teams have joined forces to put together one of the strongest camps for the 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship. They will gather an impressive roster of black belts to offer some of the best instruction and training available. The names include Samir Chantre, Osvaldo Queixinho, Rafael Formiga, João Gabriel Rocha, Milton Bastos, Marcus Antelante, Manny Diaz, Vicente Junior, Nick Maez, Vinicius Agudo, Aaron Zarballos. The camp will rotate among four different academies in Northern California, on March 5-13. They will offer two classes per day and the investment is $100 for students of the two associations and $150 for non-students. The cost for a single session is $40. For more info, email info@aresbjj.com.

Atos JJ

Atos JJ/AOJ: One of the strongest teams around, Atos JJ/AOJ is already training for the 2016 Pan. They gather in San Diego, at the teams headquarters under Andre Galvão; and in Costa Mesa, at AOJ, under the Mendes Bros. You’ll find some of the best training available, with the likes of Galvão, the Mendes, Keenan Cornelius, JT Torres, Michael Liera, Josh Hinger, among others. Black Belt Rubens Charles Maciel “Cobrinha”

Alliance/Cobrinha: In Los Angeles, Rubens Cobrinha will lead the Alliance team with a training camp at his academy on March 1-15. it will offer two classes per day on weekdays and 1 class on Saturdays. Tetracampeão mundial, integrante do Hall da Fama e atual rei dos plumas, o astro Guilherme Mendes decidiu ficar fora do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, a ser realizado no fim de maio em Long Beach, Califórnia.

Segundo o próprio, o professor da AOJ agora quer escrever um novo capítulo como professor, e liderar seus alunos na Pirâmide na Califórnia.

Confira o que Gui postou:

“Todos nós temos diferentes objetivos que estabelecemos para nossas vidas. Quando comecei no Jiu-Jitsu, aos 12 anos, meu objetivo era me tornar bom no que estava praticando, porque eu sabia que ser realmente bom em alguma coisa me proporcionaria a oportunidade de ter um bom futuro e construir uma família. Quando recebi minha faixa-preta, percebi que lentamente o meu sonho estava se transformando em realidade. No ano passado, ganhei meu quarto título mundial na faixa-preta, o número que a IBJJF requer para tornar o atleta elegível para o Hall da Fama. Minha vida tem mudado muito e me sinto muito abençoado por ter a opção de redirecionar meus objetivos, dedicando-me a fazer algo maior do que apenas competir”, explicou, para depois concluir:

“É um novo capítulo na minha vida, e para alcançar meus objetivos vou colocar o mesmo esforço que investi para me tornar o atleta que sou hoje. Eu quero liderar minha equipe, tornar-me o melhor que posso ser como um líder e professor, trabalhar para criar os melhores atletas do esporte, continuar a inovar a arte e construir uma equipe de campeões que as pessoas nunca viram antes. Hoje, isso é o que me impulsiona. Sei que ganhar outra medalha de ouro iria me trazer satisfação momentânea, me faria orgulhoso de mim mesmo mais uma vez, mas estou pronto para fazer algo maior que isso, e eu sei que eu posso alcançar este objetivo”, declarou a fera da Atos.
