Tijuca Tenis Clube welcomes Rio Open, Master & Senior

This past weekend the IBJJF International Masters and Seniors Championship ran alongside the Rio Open to give the 30+ crowd its wo shining glory. Located in the Tijuca Tennis Club the four-day event catered to legends and novice competitors alike from white to black, master to senior 4 categories.

Two of GMA members traveled to the tournament and accomplished three medals.

Black belt senior 4 competitor Itabora Ferreira took home the gold in the middleweight category representing the Alliance banner. His team back home in San Francisco serves as the Alliance headquarters in Northern California. A cancer survivor, Itabora lives a fulfilled life of teaching and also proving his skills on the mat whenever he can.

Amal Easton was also present at the championship and he placed first in his senior 2 heavyweight division as well as second in the absolute. A Renzo Gracie black belt fighting under Gordo Jiu-Jitsu, he heads Easton BJJ academies in Boulder and Denver, Colorado.

Currently occupying the absolute throne, Rodolfo Vieira is in the US state of Colorado for the final stretch in training for the IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, for which sign-ups end this Wednesday.

The GFTeam black belt is fully convinced the high-altitude training in a semi-arid climate will prove worth his while, and now he has a new ally to help him hang on to his title: cast-iron lungs.

“I’m training hard here, man. We’ve got a great camp going here at Amal Easton’s academy. Training is grueling. I think I’ll be going a thousand miles per hour this Worlds,” he said, with his usual good cheer and serenity.

I asked what the climate is like up there. The 22-year-old athlete broke it down:

“Look, the first week here I thought I was going to die from the lack of oxygen. It was horrible. I’d take a breath and felt like nothing was going in, so different from anything I’ve ever been through before. My friends here told me the heat was sinister, but I had no idea until I got a taste of it. It’s much worse than in Méier in Rio, or in Abu Dhabi in the Emirates,” Rodolfo pointed out in comparison.

“But now my lungs are used to it, so you know what that means, right?” he said.

Despite all the heat and suffering, the Julio Cesar student hasn’t been going it alone. There with Rodolfo are training partners Vinicius Marinho, Luiz Eduardo Dentinho, Jake Mackenzie, Rodolpho Bomfim, Patrick Gaudio and Vanessa Oliveira.

Rodolfo also believes other teammates of his will be putting in first-rate performances come competition time. Training buddies like Victor Honório, Lucas Laet, Max Gimenis, Jaime Canuto and Robson Mau-Mau.

“And there’s also my sister (Ana Carolina), who won the Brazilian Nationals at blue belt and will kick butt at the Worlds. We’re few in numbers but we all have a chance of making it onto the podium,” he said in closing.

Atual rei absoluto, Rodolfo Vieira está no estado do Colorado, nos EUA, para a reta final de treinos para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, cujas inscrições terminam nesta quarta-feira.

O faixa-preta da GFTeam está certo de que os treinos no clima semi-árido valeram a pena. E já apresenta, em bate-papo bem-humorado com o GRACIEMAG.com, um novo aliado para manter seus títulos: o fôlego.

“Estou treinando firme aqui, cara. Estamos com um camp ótimo na academia do Amal Easton. O treino é forte demais, eu acho que vou chegar nesse Mundial a mil por hora”, diz, com a habitual simpatia e serenidade.

Falta de ar e forma impecável

Pergunto como anda o clima por lá. O atleta de 22 anos detalha:

“Olha, na primeira semana aqui eu pensava que ia morrer de falta de ar, era horrível. Eu puxava o ar e não entrava nada, muito diferente de tudo o que eu já vi. Amigos daqui falavam que o calor era sinistro, mas eu não tinha noção até experimentar. Muito pior que o bairro do Méier, no Rio, e que Abu Dhabi, nos Emirados”, relembra Rodolfo, para arrematar:

“Mas agora o pulmão já acostumou, e aí já viu, né?”, diverte-se a fera.

Apesar do calor e do sofrimento, o pupilo do professor Julio Cesar não tem se preparado sozinho. Juntamente com Rodolfo, estão os companheiros Vinicius Marinho, Luiz Eduardo Dentinho, Jake Mackenzie, Rodolpho Bomfim, Patrick Gaudio e a Vanessa Oliveira.

Rodolfo também crê numa grande exibição de outros colegas de equipe, como Victor Honório, Lucas Laet, Max Gimenis, Jaime Canuto e Robson Mau-Mau.

“E ainda tem minha irmã Ana Carolina, que ganhou o peso dela Brasileiro, na faixa-azul e vem para arrebentar no Mundial. Enfim, somos poucos atletas, mas todos com chances de subir ao pódio”, finaliza ele. Alguém duvida de que o pessoal vai precisar bufar para vencer esses caras?

A man wanted for armed robbery was killed by the police.

But before that, Mark Sepulveda had a close encounter with Mike Farhar.

They met in a parking lot and after giving away his wallet and car keys, Fahar had to fight for his life, as his aggressor tried to force him to get into the car with him.

Fahar fought back and avoided being taken into the car.

The news team looked for experts to explain the best way to do it and they found GMA member school Easton BJJ.

Black belt Larry King takes the stand to comment the situation.

GMA member Amal Easton is celebrating another birthday this Wednesday.

Amal is a Renzo Gracie black belt, in fact the seventh person to ever receive the black belt from Renzo.

Based in Colorado, Amal has two successful academies in Denver and Boulder.

His team is already spreading across the USA.

Black belts Finnie McMahon, in Fort Collins, Colorado, and George Andersch, in Fargo, North Dakota, are two of Easton’s former students that opened academies of their own.

Recently, Amal went to Brazil as one of Brendan Schaub’s coaches for UFC Rio.

Brendan Schaub wants to beat Rodrigo Mintotauro this Saturday night at UFC Rio. What’s more, he wants to beat Mino using the Brazilian’s main weapon: Jiu-Jitsu.

So if that ends up happening, we’ll see soon. So far, at least, Schaub has made good on his promises – a really significant one.

On a recent trip to Rio when he attended a conference announcing the official card for UFC Rio, Brendan visited an outreach project run by fight Eduardo Pachu at the Tijuquinha favela. He promised that upon his return he would bring equipment for the kids to use in training. According to Schaub’s coach, our GMA Amal Easton, it would all be delivered last Thursday.

“Every American should get to know these kids who have nothing. I learned a lot,” was one of the statements Schaub told GRACIEMAG.com.
