Amid the barrage of criticism of MMA circulating around Brazil ever since gory images of UFC 155 surfaced, orthopedic doctor and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rickson Moraes penned an article especially for GRACIEMAG.com to address the sport in a strictly medical light.

A new uproar against MMA has surfaced in the press, with respected Brazilian journalists opining about and questioning the legitimacy of the sport.

These opinions are charged with emotion and somewhat uninformed, for the most part, as there’s no denying the opportunities the sport provides a great number of upstanding athletes and youths and parents, keeping them off drugs and helping to make them true role models as sportsmen.

To say the ultimate goal of combat sports is violence seems to me to be a mistake, as most of the techniques are the central pillars of a number of millenary styles of martial art, many of which are Olympic sports and thus respected for being within the spirit of competition, ones that are never subject to such an outcry against them.

The popularity MMA and the UFC recently attained in the country means the mainstream public is being exposed to strong images, it’s true, which may not carry too much impact for some, but to others may be visually and emotionally overwhelming, leading to scathing criticism like that which followed the fights between Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon and especially Cain Velasquez and Junior Cigano.

From a strictly medical point of view, I’d like to point out that the MMA events held in the U.S. since 2001 are overseen and heavily regulated by state bodies (athletic commissions) that have highly engaged medical teams helping out with medical issues involving the sport.

The most engaged of them all, the one from the state of Nevada, constantly publishes official positions for orienting medical staff involved in all events as well as promotes and incentivizes studies meant to orient the safe practice of and mitigate the risks inherent in the sport.

One example of such studies is the scientific research carried out by the Department of Emergency Medicine of the illustrious John Hopkins University and published in 2008 by the “British Journal of Sports Medicine,” a renowned international scientific magazine. In the article, all the athletes to have participated in MMA events in Nevada between the years 2002 and 2007 were assessed.

There were 1,270 athletes studied in 635 professional fights, and the record showed that during the period of study there were no critical injuries to have originated from the practice of professional MMA, and it was concluded that the rate of injury in regulated MMA competitions are similar to those of other combat sports.

Priority No. 1 is and should always be to preserve the physical integrity of the fighters, which has already translated into a number of changes being made to the unified rules of the practice of MMA. Regular pre- and post- competition exams are mandatory for any UFC athlete, as are complementary post-competition exams and minimum layoff periods so that the athletes may make full recoveries and be apt to safely return to training and fighting.

There is no arguing, however, the fact that it is a contact sport and that traumatic blows are more frequent than in less vigorous sports like swimming, running or cycling. Even so, within the current scope of medicine, MMA is considered a safe sport, when orientation and rules are followed.

Specifically speaking about the last UFC event of 2012, it’s worth pointing out that superficial cuts and bruises are much less damaging to athletes than fractures, because the potential to result in permanent injury to the athlete is next to none.

The average adult has between five and six liters of blood in their body, and we know that losing 10 percent of that volume seldom carries clinically significant repercussions. Bleeding from the face or scalp, for being highly vascularized areas, tend to make for images that are shocking to the broader audience, but from the medical standpoint rarely approach a volume of bleeding that can cause more serious complications.

Nevertheless, for the good of the sport and so that it may continue its successful course, I feel it is imperative that blows like elbows are prohibited. Furthermore, referees and doctors should be given orientation to intervene in fights where there is a great deal of bleeding, so as to keep the shocking images to a minimum.

Diante da saraivada de críticas recentes ao MMA no Brasil, após as imagens fortes do UFC 155, o médico ortopedista e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Rickson Moraes*, escreveu um artigo especialmente ao GRACIEMAG.com para tratar do esporte sob o ponto de vista médico.

“Recentemente, novas manifestações contrárias ao MMA vieram à tona na imprensa, com opiniões e questionamentos de respeitados jornalistas brasileiros quanto à legitimidade do esporte.

“São opiniões pouco embasadas e carregadas de emoção, em sua maioria, pois o esporte inegavelmente dá oportunidade a diversos atletas e jovens, pais de família exemplares, afastando-os das drogas e formando verdadeiros exemplos de desportistas.

“Afirmar que esportes de combate têm como objetivo final a violência me parece um erro, pois a maioria das técnicas são os pilares centrais de diversas modalidades de lutas milenares, muitas delas esportes olímpicos e como tais respeitadas pelo espírito de competição, e que não sofrem com tamanha reação contrária.

“A popularização recentemente alcançada pelo MMA e pelo UFC no país, aproximou o grande público de imagens fortes, é verdade, que embora possam não ser impactantes para uns, para outros acabam por causar forte apelo visual e emocional, gerando críticas contundentes, como as dirigidas aos combates entre Jim Miller e Joe Lauzon, e em especial Cain Velasquez vs Junior Cigano.

“De um ponto de vista estritamente médico, lembro que os eventos de MMA realizados nos EUA são, desde 2001, supervisionados e fortemente regulados por órgãos estaduais (comissões atléticas) que possuem corpos médicos extremamente atuantes para auxiliar nas questões médicas envolvidas na prática deste esporte.

“A mais atuante de todas elas, a do estado de Nevada, publica constantemente posicionamentos oficiais para orientar as equipes médicas envolvidas nos demais eventos, além de promover e incentivar a realização de estudos que possam orientar a prática segura e minimizar os riscos inerentes ao esporte.

“Um exemplo destes estudos é o trabalho científico realizado pelo Departamento de Emergência Médica da prestigiada Universidade John Hopkins, publicado em 2008 no “British Journal of Sports Medicine”, revista científica de renome internacional, no qual foram avaliados todos os atletas que participaram de eventos regulamentados de MMA no estado de Nevada, entre 2002 e 2007.

“Foram 1270 atletas estudados em 635 lutas profissionais, e constatou-se que no período estudado não houve nenhuma lesão crítica decorrente da prática profissional do MMA, e concluiu-se que os índices de lesões nas competições regulamentadas de MMA são similares aos de outros esportes de combate.

“A prioridade número um é e deve ser sempre a de preservar a integridade física dos lutadores, o que já se traduziu em diversas alterações nas regras unificadas para a prática do MMA. Exames regulares pré e pós a participação são requisitos para qualquer atleta do UFC, além de avaliação clínica pós competitiva com exames complementares necessários e do tempo mínimo de afastamento para que os mesmos possam se recuperar plenamente e estar aptos a retornar com segurança aos treinos e lutas.

“É indiscutível, no entanto, que se trata de um esporte de contato, e que traumas são mais frequentes do que em esportes menos vigorosos, como natação, corrida e ciclismo. Mesmo assim, à  luz do conhecimento médico atual, o MMA é considerado um esporte seguro, quando respeitadas as orientações e regras.

“No caso específico do último evento do UFC em 2012, vale ressaltar que hematomas e cortes superficiais são muito menos danosos são atletas que fraturas, luxações e lesões, pois o potencial para causar contusões definitivas são atletas é praticamente nulo.

“A quantidade de sangue média presente em um adulto é de cinco a seis élitro e sabemos que perdas de até 10% deste volume raramente trazem repercussões clínicas importantes. Sangramentos na face e no couro cabeludo, por serem áreas muito vascularizadas, acabam por fornecer de fato imagens chocantes para o grande público, mas pelo prisma médico, raramente chegam próximos a um volume de sangramento capaz de causar complicações mais sérias.

“No entanto, para o bem do esporte e para que o mesmo continue no caminho do sucesso, vejo como imperativo que golpes como cotoveladas na face sejam proibidos. Deve-se, ainda, orientar árbitros e médicos a interromperem lutas com maiores quantidades de sangramento, para que imagens chocantes sejam minimizadas.”

The UFC heavyweight title fight took place at almost 4 a.m., Brazil time, making it a strain for even the most diehard of fans. Still, a handful of the country’s journalists were tuned in to the fight between newly-crowned champ Cain Velasquez and the dethroned Junior dos Santos.

The shock of seeing dos Santos’ battered face after UFC 155 in Las Vegas motivated a fresh round of criticism from some of the South American nation’s most seasoned journalists, like Juca Kfouri, Ancelmo Góis and Zuenir Ventura, among others.

In his column for O Globo newspaper, Zuenir took to lambasting MMA mercilessly.

At one point in the post “A violência como diversão” (“Violence as entertainment,” loosely translated), the writer said, “They tell me to stop nitpicking; because these fights have always been around, it’s not something recent. Indeed, they date back to the days when the Christians were thrown into the arena for hungry lions to eat.”

Seeking to weigh the pros and cons of MMA in his article, Zuenir leaves his hardest hitting attack for the closing sentence.

“Something else is the alleged popularity of it as a spectacle, only taking the back seat to soccer, they say. But crack is popular too, and increasingly so.”

A disputa do cinturão dos pesos pesados foi perto das 4h da manhã no Brasil, horário ruim até para os fãs do UFC, mas muitos jornalistas do país ficaram de olho vivo na luta entre o novo campeão Cain Velasquez e o destronado Junior Cigano.

O choque com as imagens do rosto de Cigano severamente avariado, após o UFC 155 em Las Vegas, motivou novas críticas de alguns respeitados veteranos do jornalismo nacional, como Juca Kfouri, Ancelmo Góis e Zuenir Ventura, entre outros.

Em sua coluna de hoje no jornal “O Globo”, Zuenir voltou a bater forte no MMA. (Leia a crônica completa aqui.)

Num dos trechos da crônica “A violência como diversão”, o escritor diz: “Já me disseram para ‘deixar de frescura’ porque essas lutas sempre existiram, não são de hoje. De fato, são do tempo em que os cristãos eram jogados na arena para leão faminto comer.”

Procurando pesar argumentos prós e contras em relação ao MMA, a crônica de Zuenir deixa o ataque pesado para a frase final:

“Outra alegação é a crescente popularidade do espetáculo, que só perde, dizem, para o futebol. Mas popular o crack também é, e cada vez mais.”
