Last Sunday in Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu black belt Claudio Calasans captured his third title in the WPJJC under-82 kg division.

Despite encountering his fair share of hardships, the São Paulo State native overcame adversity and came up with the gold. “I went to Abu Dhabi in pursuit of my third title at weight but the flight over there wore on me some. I was in the United States training at Atos San Diego but needed to get back to São Paulo and two days later head to the Emirates, so I didn’t make it there in time to get over the jet lag, and my body was kind of sluggish during the competition. Even so, I managed to get the points lead in all my matches, which was really important, since the match duration there is six minutes. And I managed my main objective, which was the treble,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

“PRACTICE COMPLETE JIU-JITSU”

Pleased with his triumph, Calasans decided to share some pointers with our reader/practitioners. “The secret to training is to do lots of repetitions both on the left and on the right, to be ready for any mistake your opponent may throw your way. You have to train complete Jiu-Jitsu, always looking to improve your Jiu-Jitsu in all situations; that way you’re not so likely to get caught off guard in competition,” said the fighter from the town of São José dos Campos, who has a new mission in mind.

“Now it’s all about the Worlds. That’s my primary focus. This year I’m feeling really good, and I’m confident that my time to win it is now. I’m going to train like I never trained before. I’m only going to do the weight group this year, since I’ll have lots of other World Championships to go for gold in the absolute,” he said, without mentioning the bronze he scored in the 2009 absolute and the silver he came up with in 2010 in the middleweight at the Worlds.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Claudio Calasans faturou no último domingo, em Abu Dhabi, o tricampeonato do WPJJC na categoria até 82kg.

Mesmo com algumas dificuldades, o paulista superou algumas adversidades para fisgar o título.”Fui a Abu Dhabi em busca do tricampeonato no peso, mas senti um pouco a viagem. Eu estava nos Estados Unidos, treinando na Atos San Diego, mas precisei voltar para São Paulo, para após dois dias ir para os Emirados. Aí não consegui chegar a tempo de me adaptar ao fuso horário, o corpo sentiu um pouco na hora da luta. Mesmo assim, em todos os combates consegui ficar à frente do placar. O que foi muito importante, já que lá o tempo das lutas são de seis minutos e consegui realizar o meu objetivo principal que era o tri”, contou ao GRACIEMAG.com, ele que vinha de vitória em cima de Victor Estima, na final do Pan de Irvine.

“Treine o Jiu-Jitsu completo”

Feliz com os triunfos, Calasans distribui dicas para nosso leitor/praticante.”O segredo do treinamento é fazer bastante repetições tanto para a esquerda quanto para a direita, para estar pronto para o erro que o oponente oferecer. E não ficar preso em treinar somente guarda ou raspagem, ou queda ou finalização. Tem que treinar o Jiu-Jitsu completo, sempre buscar o melhor do seu Jiu-Jitsu em todas as situações, assim fica bem mais complicado ser surpreendido nas competições”, ensinou o lutador de São José dos Campos, que tem uma nova missão na ponta da agulha.

“Agora é o Mundial, né. Esse é meu foco principal. Este ano estou me sentindo muito bem e estou confiante que minha hora de vencê-lo chegou. Vou treinar como nunca treinei antes. Vou lutar somente a categoria este ano, já que vou ter muitos outros Mundiais para buscar o ouro absoluto”, revelou ele, que já foi bronze no absoluto (2009) e vice mundial dos médios (2010).

The under-88 kg champion of the Abu Dhabi WPJJC, Jiu-Jitsu black belt André Galvão came up short against Rodolfo Vieira in the final of the absolute division last Saturday. In the decisive bout, the GFTeam rep took it 4-2, a score that brought André Galvão to reflect.

“I didn’t do a good job of listening to my corner. I blew it when I was on top, but I’m already working on where I went wrong. Rodolfo did a good job and was guileful; guile was what lacked on my part,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

The Atos athlete also did an assessment of his overall performance in the United Arab Emirates and spoke of motivation.

“I felt I had a good campaign; I gave it my best shot. I won my weight class after four matches and three finishes, including in the final [against Vitor Toledo]. I felt great at the championship. In the absolute I had six matches and finished in three of them, made it to the final; but this time I didn’t end up winning,” he explained. “Truth is, this World Pro really motivated me. I was unhappy about losing the absolute, but at the same time I’m happy that I could see my mistakes. It was a good campaign, I missed by a hair,” remarked Galvão, who besides identifying his mistakes, derived other lessons from the competition.

LISTEN TO YOUR SIXTH SENSE IN JIU-JITSU

“I learned a lot. Whether I win or lose, I always try to learn something. I learned that I need to be more confident in myself. I learned that I have to train more. I learned that I have to pay more attention to my ‘sixth sense,” instead of to what other people are saying. Of course you always have to listen to everyone’s opinion but who knows me better than I do?

“Truth is, I’m the one that’s in there. This time I did something I’d never done before—I tried putting together a strategy. My strategy will always be to get a sense of the fight and fight, no matter what situation I’m in. I messed up, but there were also breaches in my game so far. But what I learned was good and valuable. What I learned here in Abu Dhabi is priceless. I thank God for that.”

Jiu-Jitsu tip and armbar from side-control

After racking up six finishes at the tournament, André didn’t let our reader/practitioners down, and shared some pointers to help get the tapout.

“I used the armbar a lot in my campaign. It’s a great move for when you’re in side-control. I like the armbar in particular, and it comes to me naturally. Jiu-Jitsu is an art where we have to fight and feel as naturally as possible—that is, do it without thinking. And that only comes with repetitions during training and rolling. I usually let a lot of submissions go against lower-ranked practitioners,” he advised.

“When I have a position that I want to be tighter, I start doing it a lot against the lower-ranked first. Only then do I start doing it on the higher-ranked. I also recommend brushing up on back attacks, which is something I’ve been working on since I was a white belt, and now it’s part of my Jiu-Jitsu,” said our GMA, who is already looking ahead to the Atos training camp in San Diego, in preparation for the IBJJF World Champion in June.

Campeão da categoria até 88kg no WPJJC em Abu Dhabi, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu André Galvão acabou superado por Rodolfo Vieira na final do absoluto, no último sábado. No duelo decisivo, o atleta da GFTeam levou por 4 a 2, placar que fez André Galvão refletir.

“Eu não consegui escutar muito bem o meu córner. Dei mole ali por cima, mas já está tudo sendo ajustado e certamente vamos  reparar isso. O Rodolfo mandou bem e foi malandro, faltou malandragem da minha parte”, disse ao GRACIEMAG.com.

O atleta da Atos analisou, ainda, seu desempenho geral nos Emirados Árabes, e falou em motivação.

“Achei que foi boa a minha campanha, dei o meu melhor. Venci a minha categoria fazendo quatro lutas com três finalizações, inclusive a final (com Vitor Toledo). Me senti muito bem no campeonato. No absoluto, fiz mais seis lutas, e finalizei três delas, cheguei até a final mas não foi dessa vez”, detalhou. “Na verdade esse World Pro me deu muita motivação. Fiquei triste de ter perdido o absoluto, mas ao mesmo tempo feliz de ter encontrado os meus erros. Foi uma campanha boa, foi por pouco”. comentou Galvão, que além de enxergar os erros tirou outras lições da competição.

Escutar o sexto sentido no Jiu-Jitsu

“Aprendi muito. Sempre, independente de vencer ou perder, eu sempre procuro aprender algo. Aprendi que devo confiar mais em mim, aprendi que tenho de treinar mais, aprendi que devo estar atento e escutar mais meu ‘sexto sentido’, em vez de dar ouvidos aos outros. É claro que sempre é preciso escutar a opinião de cada um, mas quem me conhece melhor do que eu?”, indaga.

“A verdade é que quem está lá dentro lutando sou eu. Desta vez fiz o que nunca fiz antes, tentei traçar uma estratégia que eu nunca fizera antes. A minha estratégia será sempre sentir a luta e lutar, seja na situação em que eu cair. Dei mole, mas também houve brechas no meu jogo ali no momento. Mas o aprendizado foi bom  e valioso. O que aprendi aqui em Abu Dhabi não tem preço nenhum no mundo que me pague. Agradeço a Deus por isso”.

Dica de Jiu-Jitsu e armlock no cem-quilos

Após colecionar seis finalizações no torneio, André não deixou nosso leitor/praticante na mão e passou boas dicas para você finalizar.

“Usei muito o armlock na minha campanha. Trata-se de um golpe ótimo para fazer quando você está ali no cem-quilos. Eu particularmente gosto muito do armlock, e faço tanto que sai naturalmente. O Jiu-Jitsu é uma arte em que a gente deve lutar e se sentir o mais natural possível, ou seja, fazer sem pensar. E isso só vem com a repetição durante os treinos e rolas. Normalmente, solto muito as finalizações nos menos graduados”, ensinou.

“Quando eu tenho uma posição em que quero ficar mais justo, começo aplicando muito nos menos graduados primeiro. Aí sim, depois começo a fazer nos mais graduados. Também recomendo afiar os ataques nas costas, que é algo que sempre fiz desde a faixa-branca, e hoje já faz parte do meu Jiu-Jitsu”, encerrou nosso GMA, que já pensa no camp da Atos em San Diego, com vistas ao Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, em junho.

Flying in under the radar, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt Samuel Canquerino routed Raphael dos Santos by 15 to 0 in the under-70 kg-division final at the Abu Dhabi WPJJC. The Caxias do Sul, Brazil native made it past Megaton and Isaque Paiva and ended up winning it all “in his own backyard.”

“Winning this competition was marvelous for me, since I work in the emirates—just not in the pretty and luxurious part. I live and teach Jiu-Jitsu in the middle of the desert in the town of Madinat Zayed, and the kids I teach don’t live in the swanky world the big city kids do,” said Samuel in introduction.

“I don’t have all that many people with whom to train; often I have to do my physical conditioning workouts on the playthings at the local park! What’s more, I make a 250-km trip back and forth to Abu Dhabi twice a week to train with the folks there. Fans sometimes think the teachers here don’t have the capacity for elite competition, but now this title proves them wrong: two other teachers and I medaled. We’re here to prove we’ve got what it takes in competition too,” the 27-year-old teacher told GRACIEMAG.com.

A representative of Sul Jiu-Jitsu team, Samuel won all his matches using his favorite move—the sweep. “The bracket was really thorny, and that just makes my winning all the more worthy. I beat Megaton by 2-0, with a half-guard sweep using the lapel and a hook. Then against Isaque Paiva I swept from 50/50 guard, not to mention withstanding a really tight triangle. Now in the final, against Raphael, I started out with a sweep from 50/50 and then passed, mounted and got his back,” recounted Canquerino, who has some sweep tips to share with our reader/practitioners.

“HALF-GUARD UNDERHOOK, ATTACK FIRST”

When it comes to sweeps from either half- or 50/50 guard, Samuel doesn’t try to keep his tactics under wraps:

“In half-guard, when going under, I feel it is indispensable that you not let the opponent pummel an underhook on the outside arm, since it lets him sprawl, and you lose mobility. It makes it harder to slide under, and depending on how much pressure he applies, you’r

Após voar abaixo do radar, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Samuel Canquerino venceu Raphael dos Santos por 15 a 0 na final da categoria até 70kg do WPJJC em Abu Dhabi. Gaúcho de Caxias do Sul, Samuel passou por Megaton e Isaque Paiva e acabou por vencer quase no “quintal” da sua casa.

“Ganhar essa competição foi algo maravilhoso para mim, pois eu também trabalho nos Emirados – só que não na parte mais bonita e luxuosa. Eu moro e ensino Jiu-Jitsu em meio ao deserto na cidade de Madinat Zayed, para as crianças locais que não vivem naquele glamour que as crianças têm na cidade grande”, apresenta-se Samuel.

“Tenho menos pessoas para treinar comigo, tive que muitas vezes me preparar fisicamente sozinho nos brinquedos do parque da cidade! Para completar, eu me desloco duas a três vezes por semana por mais de 250km, de ida e volta até Abu Dhabi, para treinar com o pessoal. Os torcedores por vezes pensam que os professores daqui não são capacitados, e agora o título demonstra o contrário: eu e mais dois professores medalhamos. Estamos aí para provar que temos nosso valor em competicões também”, disse o lutador de 27 anos, ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Representante da Sul Jiu-Jitsu, Samuel venceu todas as lutas utilizando seu golpe preferido, a raspagem. “A chave estava bem salgada e só valorizou mais minha conquista. Contra o Megaton ganhei de 2 a 0, com uma raspada de meia-guarda usando a lapela e o ganchinho. Depois, contra Isaque Paiva, raspei da guarda 50/50, além de aguentar com muita raça um triângulo encaixadíssimo. Já na final contra o Raphael comecei com uma raspada da 50/50 e depois passei, montei e peguei as costas”, contou a fera, que deixou algumas dicas de raspagem para nosso leitor/praticante.

“Esgrime na meia-guarda, ataque antes”

Tanto para a meia quanto para a raspagem da guarda 50/50, Samuel não esconde o jogo:

“Na meia-guarda, ao entrar embaixo, acho imprescíndivel não deixar o oponente ganhar as esgrima do braço de fora, pois por consequência o adversário esparrama as pernas e se perde a mobilidade. Assim fica mais difícil entrar embaixo e, dependendo da pressão, é praticamente aguardar que ele passe sua guarda. Já na 50/50 o desafio maior é raspar e não ser raspado de volta. É um jogo que exige muito estudo e repetição”, ensina Samuel, que pretende lutar o Mundial da IBJJF na Califórnia, em junho.

“Vou fazer o possível para poder comparecer, pois sei que grandes nomes estarão lá. Para um dia ser o melhor, tem que se lutar com os melhores. Claro que isso vai depender do meu trabalho aqui, pois estamos em pleno ano letivo nas escolas. Mas acredito que não vá ter problemas”, falou.

“Gostaria de poder agradecer a Deus que me fez forte quando eu já não aguentava mais, Jesus Cristo que é meu modelo e me fez vencedor antes mesmo de qualquer vitória no Jiu-Jitsu. Minha esposa Fernanda, que é minha companheira aqui onde vivemos, e a meus pais Gilmar e Zila. Agradeço à academia Sul Jiu-Jitsu, que me criou, e aos governantes de Abu Dhabi que estão profissionalizando nosso esporte e fazendo que muitos possam ter uma qualidade de vida melhor através do Jiu-Jitsu”, concluiu.

Jiu-Jitsu star Marcelo Garcia is stuck on ice after suffering an unusual injury. The current three-time world champion from Alliance hurt himself while practicing a different radical sport in the United States.

Fabio Gurgel, the mat wizard’s teacher and team leader, confirmed the injury but doesn’t feel it will keep the star from defending his title at the 2012 World Championship this June. “Marcelo did indeed hurt himself while snowboarding; he injured his clavicle but is already back teaching class at his academy in New York. I believe he’ll be 100% shortly,” asserted Fabio via e-mail.

THE JIU-JITSU MISTAKE FEW CAPITALIZE ON

The General also addressed the match that brought to Bren Events Center in Irvine to a halt, the featherweight final between Rubens Charles Cobrinha and Rafael Mendes, and analyzed the mistake that determined the outcome.

“Rafael is to be congratulated; he did something I thought I wouldn’t live to see: he went into the match and took advantage of a mistake that most fighters don’t notice,” said Gurgel. “Cobrinha is the same Cobrinha, a monster of the sport. He can keep competing at a high level for many years to come, this was just a loss,” he added.

On the Abu Dhabi WPJJC, which kicked off today, Fabio Gurgel didn’t deny that Rodolfo Vieira is the favorite to win at weight and open weight.

“Rodolfo is a great kid, great athlete and the current absolute champion of the world, so he’s the favorite. He is being studied just like all the other opponents are. Of course, like everybody, he will lose some day—I just hope it’s to one of us! Whether it will be at this Abu Dhabi championship or not, we’ll only know when it’s over,” he said in conclusion.

Astro do Jiu-Jitsu, Marcelinho Garcia está no estaleiro após uma contusão inusitada. O atual tricampeão mundial da Alliance sofreu uma contusão em outro esporte radical, nos Estados Unidos, como o leitor ficou sabendo pelo nosso Twitter.

Fabio Gurgel, professor da fera e líder da Águia, confirmou a lesão mas não aposta que o astro da equipe estará fora do Mundial 2012, em junho. “Marcelinho de fato se machucou no snowboarding, ele teve uma lesão na clavícula mas já está à frente das aulas em sua academia em Nova York. Acredito que em breve estará 100%”, contou Fabio, por email.

O erro de Jiu-Jitsu que poucos aproveitariam

O General também falou da luta que parou o Bren Events Center, em Irvine, entre seu atleta Rubens Charles Cobrinha e Rafael Mendes, na final peso-pena, e analisou o erro que decidiu o combate.

“O Rafael está de parabéns, fez uma coisa que eu achei que não fosse viver para assistir, ele veio para a luta e, em um erro que passaria despercebido contra a maioria dos lutadores, ele aproveitou”, comentou Gurgel. “O Cobrinha é o mesmo Cobrinha, um monstro do esporte. Ele pode lutar ainda no alto nível por muitos anos, essa foi apenas uma derrota”, completou.

Já sobre  o WPJJC de Abu Dhabi, que teve início hoje, Fabio Gurgel não negou que Rodolfo Vieira seja o grande favorito, no peso e no absoluto.

“O Rodolfo é um ótimo garoto, grande atleta e o atual campeão absoluto do mundo, logo o favorito. Ele é estudado como todos os outros adversários são. Claro que, como todo mundo, um dia ele vai perder – só espero que para um dos nossos! Se será neste campeonato de Abu Dhabi ou não, só saberemos quando acabar”, concluiu.

Campeão peso-pena do Pan de Jiu-Jitsu 2012, ao surpreender e finalizar Rubens Charles Cobrinha no armlock, Rafael Mendes viveu um momento único em sua carreira. Isso segundo ele próprio: “Acho que foi a minha melhor atuação em campeonatos. Soltei meu jogo e busquei finalizações diferentes”, disse logo após o duelo.

O faixa-preta, fora do WPJJC de Abu Dhabi pela primeira vez, devido a um impedimento com seu passaporte, analisou o seu desempenho direto dos EUA, onde está dando entrada em seu green-card.

“Já se passaram alguns dias desde o Pan em Irvine, que foi excelente para meu irmão (Gui Mendes, vice no pluma) e eu. Mesmo o resultado não sendo 100%, estamos muito felizes por nós dois, não somente pelas medalhas. O que mais gostamos foi a maneira como lutamos contra cada adversário”, disse Rafa, via Facebook.

“Nós estamos competindo desde 11 e 12 anos, e nossa paixão pelo Jiu-Jitsu não se resume apenas a ganhar medalhas de ouro ou subir no lugar mais alto do pódio, é muito mais profundo do que isto. É sobre provar ao mundo que determinação e fé em Deus vale a pena”, resumiu ele, feliz por ver que o jogo de ambos já está influenciando a nova geração.

Winning the 2012 Pan IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship after catching Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” in an unexpected armbar was a unique moment in the career of Rafael Mendes. He says so himself: “I feel it was my best championship performance to date. I let my game flow and went after different finishes,” he said just after the bout.

Unable to compete at the upcoming World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup in Abu Dhabi for the first time, due to passport issues, the black belt took a close look at his performance in the USA, where he has started the process of applying for his green card.

“Some days have now passed since the Pan in Irvine, which was an excellent occasion for my brother [Guilherme Mendes, light featherweight runner-up] and me. Even though the results weren’t 100%, we’re pleased with ourselves, not just for the medals. What we liked most was the way we peformed against each of our opponents,” posted Rafa on his Facebook page.

“We’ve been competing since we were 11 and 12 years old, and our passion for Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t boil down to just winning gold medals or making it to the top of the podium; it goes much deeper than that. It’s about proving to the world that having determination and faith in God is worth it,” he said, happy with the way the brothers’ game is influencing a new generation.
