After an entire afternoon of competition at the highest level, the second and final day of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour Rome 2024 is down for the count this Sunday, April 14th. The tournament started last Friday, April 12th, with the Youths warming the mats for the experienced Masters to put their skills on display the following day. Today, however, the action got dialed all the way up to eleven as the Professional category took the stage to fight for gold, glory, and those sweet AJP ranking points.

And of course, it is impossible to talk about today’s performances without mentioning the black belts. Living up to the title “Elite of Jiu-Jitsu”, the competitors pushed the martial art to its limit in the Centro Olimpico Matteo Pellicone, with standout performances on the way to the top of the podium. MEN’S GI / BLACK

56kg – Welison Fernandes vs Frederico Guimarães

Leading man in the light-featherweight division ranking, Welison Fernandes showcased his skills in the ADGS Rome final against Frederico Guimarães, with the latter coming out ahead on the scoreboard and having victory in his grasp until the last moments of the duel. While Frederico earned five points throughout the bout by going up from the double pull and sweeping twice, Welison had also swept twice and played from below most of the time. With a good grip on his opponent’s lapel and pants, while keeping an eye on the clock, Welison went up and stabilized close to the end of the match, settling the score at a tight 6-5 to add another gold medal to his resumé.

62kg – Jefferson Fagundes vs Yuri Hendrex

Jefferson Fagundes was the standout name in the 62kg division. After beating his first opponent with a whopping 11-0 score, Jefferson went on to submit Kalel dos Santos in the semifinal and was set to face Yuri Hendrex in the gold round. However, Yuri was unable to fight in the final, so Jefferson rose as the division champion by default.

69kg – Diego Batista vs Dzhimsher Razmadze

Diego “Pato” Batista was like a force of nature in the 69kg division of the ADGS Rome. Arriving as the favorite for the title, Diego had three great victories before he reached the final, the last of which coming via points against the tough Florian Bayili in the semifinal. His opponent in the final would be the Georgian athlete Dzhimsher Razmadze, who had his fair share of rough encounters in the bracket, submitting Thiago Macedo and then outscoring Artur Oliveira in the semis. Unable to compete in the final, Dzhimsher had no choice but to hand over the top spot of the podium to Pato, who won the final and became the champion by default.

77kg – Felipe Ribas vs Luiz Paulo Medeiros

In the blink of an eye, the fight between Felipe and Luiz Paulo had a huge turnaround. Luiz Paulo started ahead on the scoreboard by fearlessly spinning and going up with two points, after pulling guard at the beginning. Meanwhile, Felipe played guard and tried some attacks from the x-guard, eventually managing to spin and go up trying a back take. When Felipe got one of the hooks in, Luiz Paulo spun out of the fight area, prompting the referees to give a penalty for him, while awarding three points to Felipe, two for almost taking the back and another one for going up at the start of his move. Luiz Paulo contested the final score and Felipe ended up taking the win by a 9-2 score.

85kg – Matheus Vetoraci vs Uanderson Ferreira

An exciting fight between two black belts who excel at fighting while standing up. Matheus kicked off the match attempting a takedown on Uanderson but didn’t complete the move, earning only a single point. Uanderson grabbed hold of his opponent’s waist and tried a takedown of his own, but Matheus took advantage of the movement to reach the side with three points, raising the score to 4-0. Uanderson lowered the difference to 4-3 after he reached the side and, when the fight slowed down, both athletes were punished by lack of combativeness. With the score at 5-4 for Matheus, Uanderson attempted another takedown and tied the score at 5-5, but Matheus attacked with an armbar at the very last second of the duel. While Uanderson defended, the referees decided that Matheus’ attack was worth a point due to the danger of submission. Thus, Matheus scored 6-5 to beat the favorite Uanderson for the 85kg division title.

94kg – Luiz Henrique Betta vs Marcos Carrozzino

Another well-balanced duel between the rivals Marcos Carrozzino and Luiz Henrique Betta. Marcos tried to sweep from the guard and Luiz responded with a good cross-choke attempt to tip the balance in his favor on the scoreboard. After a lack of combativeness between both competitors, Betta found enough room to grab Marcos’ waist from the back. Unable to complete the takedown, Luiz Betta jumped on Marcos’ back with a hook near the end of the fight. In the end, Luiz received the advantage for the move and won in a very strategic way, with a 2-1 score.

120kg – Felipe Bezerra vs Jean Maltese

The only local representative in the Professional finals, the Italian Jean Maltese had the rough mission of facing the current ADWPJJC champion Felipe Bezerra. With a solid game, Felipe almost passed and took the back, making it 2-0 on the scoreboard. Up-to-date on defensive moves, Jean avoided the dangerous attack but Felipe tried another pass and took aim at his opponent’s back yet again. Jean managed to defend once more, but Felipe took the win with a 4-0 score and added another high-profile title to his grappling record.

WOMEN’S GI / BROWN / BLACK

49kg – Brenda Larissa vs Diana Teixeira

Brenda Larissa got the better of her rival Diana Thais Teixeira for the 49kg title. After pulling guard, Brenda made a move from half guard to go up, with Diana promptly defended but still losing the lead on the scoreboard to Brenda, who earned a single point for the spin. The duel continued with an intense exchange standing up and Diana took control of the fight’s flow, pulling near the end of the match to sweep, attacking with a triangle, and shifting to an omoplata. Offering no risk of submission, Diana was unable to earn any points for her efforts and Brenda took the title by 1-0.

55kg – Ana Rodrigues vs Beatriz Campos

The reigning champ Ana Rodrigues once again put on a show with her Jiu-Jitsu at the AJP mats. Entering the final against Beatriz Campos, who started ahead on the scoreboard by rising from the double pull, Ana had to use her fearsome lapel adjustment to regain control in the duel. With her opponent’s lapel balled up between her legs, Ana knocked Beatriz off balance and attacked with razor-sharp precision on the foot, submitting to take the 55kg division gold.

62kg – Maria Delahaye vs Julia Alves

Overcoming the odds, Maria Luisa Delahaye got the better of her teammate and AJP multi-champion Julia Alves. After going up from the double pull, Maria spun to take the back, passed the guard, and ended up at Julia’s back. After that, it wasn’t long before Maria had the winning lapel choke in place to seize the title in Rome.

70kg – Ingridd Sousa vs Izadora Silva

Ingridd Sousa won another duel against Izadora Silva on the AJP mats. This time around, Ingridd started ahead on the scoreboard as she pulled and went up. Izadora responded by sweeping from the spider guard, but Ingridd stretched her opponent and managed to go up again, putting pressure to pass and settling the score at 4-2 to become the division champion.

95kg – Yara Soares vs Maria Carolina Vincentini

Yara Soares maintained constant pressure to beat Maria Carolina Vicentini in the 95kg final. After rising from the double pull and opening the score at 1-0, Yara made a good grip on Maria’s pants and put pressure on every inch of her opponent until she managed to pass. With 4-0 on the scoreboard, Yara put her knee on Maria Carolina’s belly without stabilizing to close the score at 5-0 and seize the title.

A temporada 2018/2019 do Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour deu seu pontapé inicial no último domingo, dia 29 de julho, em Tóquio, no Japão. A multidão que lotou as arquibancadas no Ota Center General Gymnasium teve uma experiência inigualável no maior evento do Abu Dhabi Grand Slam já realizado no Japão. Mais de 700 atletas de todas as faixas e idades deram o melhor de si para alcançar seus objetivos e voltar para casa com as desejadas medalhas de ouro e também uma boa fatia dos mais de 120 mil dólares em prêmios.

A divisão de faixa-preta, tanto para atletas adultos quanto para os masters, foi o principal atração para aqueles que vieram assistir in loco, bem como para quem conferiu ao vivo pela TV ou pela internet. Depois de um dia inteiro de disputas, aqui estão os resultados finais de cada categoria de peso na divisão de faixa-preta para adultos.

MASCULINO

56kg – Em duelo único entre compatriotas, o japonês Nobuhiro Sawada venceu Massaki Todokoro por 1 a 0 nas vantagens em luta muito disputada.

62kg – Depois de finalizar Yuto Hirao, Tomoyuki Hashimoto pegou João Gabriel Batista num triângulo logo nos primeiros momentos da final, e por mais que o brasileiro tenha batalhado para escapar com sucesso do aperto, a vantagem da finalização foi suficiente para Hashimoto ficar com o ouro.

69kg – Em luta única, o australiano Lee Ting venceu o brasileiro Marcio Medeiros com um 8 a 0 nos pontos que lhe garantiu a medalha de ouro.

77kg – Diego Ramalho percorreu um longo caminho até o título. Em quatro lutas, ele venceu primeiro o sul-coreano Inseong Jang por 2 a 0, depois repetiu o placar contra o canadense Jacob Mackenzie para enfrentar e finalizar o japonês Yuji Okamoto na semifinal. A disputa pela medalha de ouro foi muito parelha, com Diego Ramalho e Kleber Koike lutando até o fim. Com 1 a 0 nas vantagens, Diego Ramalho levou o título para casa.

85kg – Os EUA também tiveram um campeão coroado, na figura de DJ Jackson. O faixa-preta lutou três vezes neste domingo, primeiro finalizando Takagi Shota do Japão com uma chave de braço e, em seguida, também recebendo os três tapinhas de Alan Fidelis. Na final, Jackson trabalhou em seu melhor jogo para superar Bradley Hill, da Grã-Bretanha, com uma queda e uma passagem de guarda para acumular 5 a 0 nos pontos.

94kg – Rudson Mateus foi outro campeão a entrar no tatame três vezes. Ele estreou contra o alemão Nicolas Penzer, superado com um placar de 9 a 2. Em seguida, ele finalizou Anton Minenko com um armlock da 50/50 e se encontrou com Arya Esfandmaz na final. O faixa-preta brasileiro impôs seu jogo para acumular 9 a 0 nos pontos e levar a medalha de ouro para casa.]

110kg – Em duas lutas, Gutemberg Pereira dominou o tatame e finalizou Wanderson Amakawa duas vezes para conquistar o título. O armlock foi o golpe escolhido ambas as vezes para definir o resultado.

FEMININO

49kg – Mayssa Caldas finalizou duas adversárias e levou a medalha de ouro para casa. A brasileira pegou Iori Echigo e Aya Matsumoto do Japão com sua finalização registrada: o arco e flecha.

55kg – Outra conhecida campeã do ADWPJJC, agora na faixa-preta, Amal Amjahid dominou as ações no Japão. Em duas lutas, ela finalizou Eummi Lee, da Coréia do Sul, com um estrangulamento de lapela do cem quilos, e em seguida pegou Livia Gluchowska com uma chave de pé para continuar a reinar na divisão.

62kg – Em luta única, Larissa Paes venceu Natalia Zumba por 5 a 2 nos pontos e levou a medalha de ouro para casa.

70kg – Samantha Cook e Claudia eram as favoritas para a final, e ambas chegaram lá. Do Val venceu Meagan Evans por 2 a 0 e Priscilla Cerqueira na decisão para alcançar a finalíssima. Cook pegou Caroline Marciano com um estrangulamento pelas costas. Na final, depois de uma luta muito próxima, os árbitros decidiram a favor de Cook, após um empate em 0 a 0 nos pontos.

90kg – Gabrieli Pessanha é mais um talento que merece atenção. Em dois duelos, a faixa-marrom abriu caminho para a medalha de ouro com desempenhos imponentes. Ela primeiro venceu Jessica Andrade por 17 a 2 e depois superou Shantelle Thompson por 14 a 0.

LEGENDS: Shaolin vence Daisuke Shiraki de forma apertada

O duelo entre Shaolin e Shiraki foi mais acirrado do que muitos esperavam. Duas vezes campeão do Abu Dhabi Legens, Shaolin teve que dar o seu melhor para superar seu adversário japonês. Shiraki começou com velocidade total para chegar na meia-guarda de Shaolin e garantir a vantagem. Com muita experiência, Shaolin quebrou o ritmo de Shiraki e buscou forças para atacar num estrangulamento cruzado, partindo da guarda fechada, para garantir a sua vantagem e empatar a partida, vencendo por uma punição acumulada do adversário.

Desde o juvenil faixa-branca à faixa-preta master 2, o amor pela arte suave e a vontade de vencer foram presenças constantes em cada um dos sete tatames montados na arena. Como de costume, o faixa-preta adulto masculino e o faixa-preta/marrom adulto feminino eram os únicos com nomes mais conhecidos. Veja abaixo o desfecho de cada categoria de peso:

Faixa-preta (Masculino)

62 kg – Os compatriotas japoneses Tomoyuki Hashimoto, Kazuchiro Miyachi e Kei Ito lutaram pelo título. Miyachi bateu Ito na única semifinal e passou a enfrentar Hashimoto na final. Uma raspagem em favor de Hashimoto foi suficiente para resolver a disputa e garantir-lhe a medalha de ouro.

69 kg – Thiago Bravo lutou duas vezes para garantir o título na categoria. Primeiro, ele bateu Yuto Hirao e depois se juntou a Daisuke Shiraki na final, que terminou em um empate. A decisão dividida dos árbitros (2-1) decidiu a favor de Bravo, presenteando-o com a medalha de ouro.

77 kg – Roberto Satoshi também lutou duas vezes para ganhar a medalha de ouro. O atleta primeiro derrotou Anderson Takahashi e depois pegou Robson Tanno com um triângulo de mão na final.

85 kg – Faisal Al-Kitbe venceu Akihiro Kawakami por 2 a 0 com uma queda, e assim chegou à final. Do outro lado, Gabriel Arges superou Youngam No por 2 a 1 nas vantagens após empate de 2 a 2. Na final, Arges ganhou as costas do seu adversário perto do fim da partida, o que o colocou 4 pontos à frente de Kitbe para garantir a sua segunda medalha de ouro nos Grand Slams desta temporada.

94 kg – Provavelmente a divisão mais esperada do dia, a categoria teve Xande Ribeiro e Felipe Preguiça como favoritos para a final. Eles não decepcionaram e talentosamente se classificaram para a disputa do ouro. Xande derrotou Alexandre Ogawa com um estrangulamento pelas costas e depois surpreendeu Bruno Kikuchi com um triângulo. Pena teve apenas uma luta e conseguiu encaixar um estrangulamento pelas costas em Alan Fidelis. Na final, as raspagem fizeram a tônica do combate. Preguiça raspou primeiro, mas Xande contra-atacou e empatou a partida em 2 a 2. Após uma parada, Felipe puxou para a guarda e conseguiu fazer outra raspagem, desempatando com um 4 a 2. Xande ainda teve tempo para empatar novamente e foi para a raspagem, mas Preguiça lutou bravamente e permitiu apenas uma vantagem, garantindo a medalha de ouro.

110 kg – Os grandalhões também fizeram sua parte. Desta vez, José Junior ganhou sua medalha de ouro depois de terminar em segundo lugar em Los Angeles. Ele raspou Andre Campos no início da final e foi capaz de segurar o resultado pelos seis minutos restantes da partida, tornando-se o vencedor da divisão.

Marrom / Preta (Feminino)

55 kg – Lutando em casa, a Japonesa Rikako Yuasa estava com tudo. Primeiro, ela esticou o braço da chinesa Yuxing Xiong e, em seguida, superou sua conterrânea Mei Yamaguchi com um placar volumoso de 16 a 0, garantindo o título.

70 kg – Favorita dos fãs, Mackenzie Dern lutou duas vezes neste domingo, ambas as vezes contra a australiana Meagan Green. Primeiro, Mackenzie venceu Green na semifinal com um leglock. Após Meagan bater a brasileira Isabeli Souza por 1 a 0 nas vantagens, elas se encontraram novamente na final. Mackenzie, mais uma vez usou o leglock para finalizar sua adversária e, desta vez, garantir a medalha de ouro.

TORRANCE, Calif. – The same game plan that saw Anderson Silva suffering his first UFC loss will be the same one to exact revenge in the rematch.

On Monday, Silva told reporters that despite being knocked out when holding his hands low and taunting Chris Weidman at UFC 162, he will change nothing about how he approaches the UFC middleweight title fight in their UFC 168 rematch.

“I no change nothing,” Silva said during the UFC 168 World Tour stop in Los Angeles. “This is me, Anderson.”

Silva explained that Weidman is no different than any other man. The look on his face was one that described a man that finds it preposterous that Silva would change anything about the way he’s fought in years before.

Weidman, who defeated Silva in the second round of their pay-per-view main event in July, became the only man ever to better Silva in the octagon. Since then, little has changed in terms of the public’s perspective on him being the underdog.

Being the favorite again, Silva looks at UFC 168 main event the same way he did when leading into their first fight – with a shoulder shrug.

“Normal,” he said when asked how he views Weidman leading into their rematch. “Two legs, two arms, normal.”
