A champion isn’t made up just of bravery when he’s in the arena. Fabrício Werdum, the former UFC champion, displayed tenacity and a big heart as he helped in a rescue in the U.S. against an angry sea that was dragging two youths beyond the surf.

This happened in Torrance, where Werdum and family were spending the afternoon. After seeing the fire fighters moving, the heavyweight noticed that only one lifeguard had jumped in the water to save a couple of teenagers.

“I grabbed the orange buoy, put it across my chest and got close to the lifeguard — a bit in front, really,” Werdum said to Diego Ribas of Ag. Fight. “I told him to get the girl, who was screaming a lot, and I got the boy, who was already limp. I managed to get him, and we headed to the beach. The waves were big; the girl went underwater like three times. Jesus! My heart was pounding hard; it’s an extreme situation. It’s worse than a fight — not even close.”

Não é só de valentia nos cages que se faz um campeão. Fabrício Werdum, ex-campeão do UFC, mostrou garra e coração enormes ao ajudar em um resgate nos EUA, contra o mar bravio que arrastava dois jovens para além da arrebentação.

O fato ocorreu em Torrance, onde Werdum e a família passavam a tarde. Ao ver a movimentação dos bombeiros, o peso pesado se alertou e percebeu que apenas um salva-vidas pulara na água para resgatar um casal de adolescentes. Foi aí que o faixa-preta se prontificou.

“Peguei a boia laranja, atravessei ela no peito e cheguei junto com o salva-vidas, um pouquinho na frente ainda” disse Werdum em entrevista ao repórter Diego Ribas, da Ag. Fight. “Falei para ele pegar a menina, que estava gritando muito, e eu peguei o garoto, que estava mole já. Consegui pegar ele e fomos em direção a praia. As ondas eram grandes, a guria afundou umas três vezes. Nossa, o coração foi a milhão, é uma situação extrema. É pior que luta. Não chega nem perto.”

Campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu e também do ADCC, Werdum usou um bote constante no triângulo para conseguir pegar o imbatível Fedor Emelianenko no Strikeforce, em meados de 2010.

Para analisar o Jiu-Jitsu refinado de Fabrício, Mario Reis, também campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, se juntou com mais dois amigos de Werdum para destrinchar a luta e os detalhes da finalização.

Ex-campeão dos pesos pesados do UFC, o astro do Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo Minotauro depositou seu voto de confiança na arte suave, hoje, ao comentar o duelo entre Fabricio Werdum e Cain Velasquez pelo cinturão.

O líder da Team Nogueira, em entrevista ao Lancenet, disse crer que Werdum tem “boas chances” se o duelo for para o chão.

“Velasquez tem mais volume e é o cara que vai puxar o ritmo da luta. Se a luta for para a decisão ou se for inteira na trocação, ele é mais consistente, já que acho que ele levaria a melhor no ritmo, nas
quedas, no boxe. Ele tem mais jogo. Mas Werdum tem suas chances se a luta for para o chão. Ele vai dar o bote para uma finalização. Ele já finalizou o Fedor [Emelianenko], já me finalizou, é um finalizador
nato, então tem boas chances”, analisou Minotauro.

O ídolo baiano, vale lembrar, enfrentou ambos. Contra Velasquez, em 2010, perdeu por nocaute; contra Werdum, venceu uma no Pride, em 2006, e perdeu outra em junho deste ano, na chave de braço. Werdum e Cain
ainda não têm data ou local oficializados para o duelo.

Será a quarta defesa de cinturão de Cain Velasquez (13v, 1d), que vem de vitórias sobre os brasileiros Junior Cigano e Antonio Pezão.

Já Werdum (17v, 5d) vem de três vitórias seguidas, sobre Roy Nelson, Mike Russow e Minota, na final do “TUF Brasil 2”.

Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum triumphed over Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko in the Strikeforce Fedor vs. Werdum match up on June 26, 2010 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The fight went one round – 1:09 seconds to be exact, with Werdum, a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Sylvio Behring, emerging from the short battle victorious.

As the first round began, the two circled each other, feeling each other out. Then Fedor struck Werdum in the face. Werdum fell back, tripped, and landed on his back on the mat. As the crowd went crazy thinking Werdum was hurt and Fedor was going to finish off the fight, he leaned over Werdum, who promptly grabbed his arm, got his hand on the back of his head, and locked his legs around his body for the triangle choke with arm bar.

Werdum says he went from trying to get the choke on Fedor, to the arm bar, to the choke, and back to the arm bar; readjusting slowly and surely until he finally was able to submit him. When Fedor tapped after 1:09 seconds in the ring, the crowd stood, shocked, dumbfounded, and profoundly disappointed by what just happened to their hero.

The few in the arena who were steadfast Werdum fans screamed and yelled about the power of jiu jitsu. A deliriously happy Werdum ran to his camp and hugged each coach, so excited with his win. Werdum says he always believed he could persevere and in the end he did – jiu jitsu style.

After the fight, the celebrating began, with the singing and chanting, as only Brazilians can do. With his crew around him, including his muay thai coach, Rafael Cordeiro, his jiu jitsu coach, Octavio “Rathinho” Couto, and his Werdum Combat Team partner, Lucas Pires, Werdum was on top of the world.

“It’s Werdum time!” the champion and his friends repeated over and over again.

Ele revela quando luta novamente e explica como funcionam os treinamentos, já que representa a Chute Boxe, mas não deixa de trabalhar com Rafael Cordeiro, ex-treinador do time curitibano. Confira a conversa de Werdum com o GRACIEMAG.com:

Logo após a vitória no Strikeforce você falou em enfrentar o Fedor. Essa luta sai?

Será difícil agora, porque ele machucou a mão e deve ficar cinco meses sem lutar. Então não sei o que vai acontecer. Acho que terei uma luta a mais e depois enfrento o Fedor. Não tem como eu ficar cinco meses sem lutar, é muito tempo. Mas estamos ali dentro e uma hora acontece. Isso é certo, é 100%.

O atual campeão na sua categoria é o holandês Alistair Overeem. Lutar com ele não seria ainda melhor?

Ainda não entendi por que eles estão segurando tanto o cinturão com Overeem. Sei que ele mereceu, mas isso já foi há dois anos. Eu já tinha que ter tomado de assalto, né? Acho que vou lá na Holanda tomar esse cinturão dele! Vou falar para ele o seguinte: “Pode passar esse cinturão para cá. Te ganhei aquela vez no Pride (em maio de 2006), faz dois anos que você não luta lá e esse cinturão é meu!” (Risos). Agora a sério, vou passar o Natal na Espanha com a minha família e volto para os EUA pensando na próxima luta. Independentemente de adversário, em fevereiro ou março luto novamente.

Você tomou um sufoco no início do combate contra o Pezão. Como analisa a vitória?

Pude mostrar que estava bem preparado. Antes da luta tive algumas lesões, coisa que pode acontecer com todo mundo. Cortei o supercílio duas vezes e também machuquei as costas. Até o empresário do Pezão (Alex Davis) sabia do meu supercílio, para ver como as notícias correm. Mas agora está tudo certo. Uma vitória é sempre bom. Ganhou é felicidade, patrocínio… Perdeu, ferrou. Tem que correr atrás de tudo novamente. Uma vitória é um passo à frente, a derrota são três para trás.

Afinal, ter lutado o ADCC em Barcelona foi benéfico ou prejudicial para seu compromisso no MMA?

Foi ótimo ter lutado o Abu Dhabi, ainda mais por ter sido na minha casa lá, a Espanha. Me ajudou muito porque o ADCC é uma espécie de Mundial sem o kimono. Me ajudou porque eu não parei. Lutei contra o Mike Kyle, depois emendei com o ADCC e depois essa luta. Então foi excelente.

Você representa a Chute Boxe, mas continua com o Rafael Cordeiro. Como funciona isso?

Antigamente era uma rivalidade muito grande entre as academias, mas hoje mudou muita coisa. Represento a minha academia, que é a Werdum Combat Team, a Kings MMA, que é do Rafael Cordeiro, e a Chute Boxe, do Rudimar. Hoje todo mundo treina com todo mundo e fui, inclusive, um dos primeiros a fazer esse intercâmbio, quando fui treinar o Cro Cop [em 2003]. Na época, falaram muita coisa. Mas hoje isso é uma coisa normal e prevalece o profissionalismo.

Fabricio Werdum is still celebrating his second win at Strikeforce, where he overcame Antonio “Pezao” Silva on November 7. But he wants more.

Twice champion of the ADCC over 99kg division, the heavyweight has his mind on greater challenges: Russian Fedor Emelianenko and the heavyweight belt.

He reveals when he will fight again and explains how his training has been going, now that he represents Chute Boxe but still works with Rafael Cordeiro, the team’s former trainer. Check out the conversation Werdum had with GRACIEMAG.com.

Just after your win at Strikeforce you talked of facing Fedor. Will this fight happen?

It’s hard to say now, because he hurt his hand and should go five months without fighting. So I don’t know what is going to happen. I think I’m one fight from facing Fedor. I can’t go five months without fighting, that’s a lot of time. But we’re in the mix and it should come about some time. That’s 100% for certain.

The current champion of your division is Alistair Overeem. Wouldn’t fighting him be even better?

I still don’t understand why they’re letting the belt stay with Overeem. I know he deserved it, but that was two years ago. I should have mugged him for it by now, right? I think I’ll go over to Holland to get that belt from him. I’d tell him this, “Hand that belt over. I beat you that time in Pride (May of 2006), it’s been two years since you fought over there (at Strikeforce) and that belt is mine!” (laughs). Now seriously, I’m going to spend Christmas in Spain with my family and I’ll come back to the USA thinking of my next fight. Regardless of my opponent, in February or March I’ll fight again.

You represent Chute Boxe but remain with Rafael Cordeiro. How does that work?

In the old days there was great rivalry between gyms, but now things have changed. I represent my academy, which is Werdum Combat Team, Kings MMA, which is Rafael Cordeiro’s, and Rudimar’s Chute Boxe. Nowadays everyone trains with everyone and I was even one of the first to do this exchange, when I went to train with Cro Cop [in 2003]. At the time a lot was said about it. But today it’s normal and professionalism prevails.

You had a rough time at the start of your fight with Pezao. What is your assessment of your fight?

I was able to show how well prepared I was. Before the fight I had some injuries, which can happen to anyone. I cut my brow twice and also hurt my ribs. Even Pezao’s manager (Alex Davis) knew about my brow, which goes to show how news spreads. But now everything’s alright. It’s always good to win. If you win you’re happy, have sponsors… If you lose, you’re screwed; you have to start from scratch. A win is a step forward; a loss is three steps back.

In the end, was competing at the ADCC a help or hindrance for you MMA fight?

It was great to compete at the Abu Dhabi, even more so because I was at home there, in Spain. It helped a lot because the ADCC is a sort of World Championship without the gi. It helped me and I didn’t stop there. I fought Mike Kyle, then went on to the ADCC and then had this fight. So it was great.
