Former No. 1 welterweight contender Jon Fitch was one of 16 fighters released from the UFC on Tuesday, according to a report.

Fitch along with names like Vladimir Matushenko, Jay Hieron, Jacob Volkmann were among the names granted a release from the company.

Injury rears its ugly head within the UFC’s ranks yet again.

Roger Hollet, who was tabbed to face Wagner “Caldeirão” Prado on Jan. 19 at UFC on FX 7, has suffered a training mishap and will no longer be able to make the date. In his place against Caldeirão goes Brazil’s Ildemar “Marajó” Alcantara, according to reports.

Marajó, the older brother of UFC fighter Yuri Alcantara, holds a 17-1 record and has fought under the Jungle Fight banner on ten occasions. While in the Brazilian promotion, Alcantara suffered only one setback and is the current holder of the promotional middleweight grand prix title.

With Hollet’s injury, Marajó was brought in to fight Prado with a little over a week to go until the event. Alcantara will be moving up to light heavyweight for the UFC on FX 7 show.

Prado (8-1) made his UFC debut facing Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 4. The fight ended in a no-contest after Davis unintentionally poked him in the eye. The Brazilian then went on to face Davis in a rematch at UFC 153, losing to his American opponent by arm-triangle choke.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, the very city where he will have a chance to prove his worth on Jan. 19 at UFC on FX 7, Wagner “Caldeirão” Prado is taking his impending encounter with Canadian fighter Roger Hollet very seriously.

Caldeirão, who was so dubbed for having appeared on Brazilian Sunday variety show “Caldeirão do Huck,” had a truncated UFC debut, when at UFC on Fox 4 Phil Davis accidentally stuck a finger in his eye early in the opening round and their fight was deemed a no-contest. The Brazilian then went on to face the light heavyweight standout for a second time, at UFC 153 in Rio, and succumbed to an arm-triangle.

When interviewed by GRACIEMAG.com, Prado said he made the loss work in his favor and is now much better prepared for his next outing.

“After losing to Phil Davis, I assimilated how you have to be really focused in training,” Caldeirão said. “I fought three times in 2012 and didn’t get injured once. This will be my third UFC, so I’m calm and happy to be fighting in São Paulo. It will be a good fight.”

Caldeirão also took a look at his upcoming opponent, who is coming off a loss in his UFC debut to Matt Hammil at UFC 152. The Brazilian, who is a blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu, says his next fight will look different from the first one, possibly avoiding ground action altogether.

“Roger Hollet likes to bang, and I’ve been doing a lot of standup in training,” he said. “That’s been my priority in training. I feel the fight will remain on the feet, so I’m focused on my opponent’s game in order to come out victorious, perhaps even with the knockout.”

O canal Combate será o único a transmitir todas as 12 lutas do UFC Rio 3, no dia 13 de outubro, direto da HSBC Arena. Para um evento especial, a emissora oficial do UFC no Brasil prepara uma cobertura de peso. Só no Combate o UFC Rio começa cedo!

A principal luta da noite traz a fera Anderson Silva, que subiu de categoria de peso para enfrentar o americano Stephan Bonnar, conhecido por apresentações raçudas dentro do Octógono. O desafio não vale cinturão, mas Anderson defende o seu recorde de vitórias na organização, um total de 15, invicto.

Outro astro em ação será o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo Minotauro, que encara Dave Herman pelos pesos pesados. Entretanto, as emoções do evento começam no card preliminar, com exclusividade no canal Combate. Brasileiros como Erick Silva, Demian Maia e as feras do reality show “TUF Brasil” Rony Jason e Sérgio Moraes estarão em ação, entre outros.

No sábado, a cobertura do Combate começa às 19h, com reportagens ao vivo direto da HSBC Arena. O canal também transmite a coletiva que antecede o UFC Rio, no dia 11, a partir das 13h. No dia 12 é a vez da pesagem, com a última encarada dos lutadores, às 16h e, no dia do evento, logo após as lutas, o Combate exibe, ao vivo, a coletiva com as declarações dos astros da noite.

O UFC Rio 3 será narrado por Rhoodes Lima, com comentários de Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães, Luciano Andrade, entrevistas de Renata Aymoré e apresentação de Viviane Ribeiro e André Azevedo. A repórter Wanda Grandi cobre os bastidores do show.

A programação em detalhes

Nesta terça, às 20h, o “Espaço Octógono” aquece o público com quatro grandes desafios de Anderson Silva e dois do seu adversário, Stephan Bonnar.

Quarta-feira (10), o “Combate Brasil”, às 23h, vem com lutas de Gleidson Tibau, Francisco Massaranduba, Gabriel Napão, Gerônimo Mondragon, Rony Jason e Erick Silva em eventos nacionais.

O “Countdown”, programa do UFC que traz a preparação dos principais atletas em ação no Rio, será na sexta-feira (12), às 21h.
