Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira é conhecido mundialmente pelo seu apelido “Minotauro”, o monstro mitológico metade humano e metade touro que habitava o labirinto do Rei Minos na Grécia Antiga. Contudo, considerando suas performances e sua história de vida, Rodrigo assemelha-se muito mais a outra lenda grega: a da Fênix, o pássaro que renasce das próprias cinzas.

A característica mitológica do ressurgimento manifestou-se desde a infância, quando, aos 11 anos de idade, Minotauro foi atropelado por um caminhão, chegando a ficar quatro dias entre a vida e a morte. Quantos seres humanos sobreviveriam a um acidente desses, e ainda se recuperariam a ponto de se tornarem lutadores profissionais? Na Antiguidade, feitos semelhantes eram reservados a semideuses como Perseu ou Hércules.

Aprimorando-se no boxe e no Jiu-Jitsu, Minotauro logo passou a ganhar campeonatos e, como as grandes lendas, embarcou em uma jornada fantástica, repleta de acontecimentos extraordinários contra os mais fabulosos adversários. Foi sua odisseia no MMA.

Rodrigo sagrou-se campeão em todos os torneios mais prestigiados do esporte: Rings, Pride e UFC. Em sua epopeia, precisou renascer em lutas desproporcionais e em situações que encerrariam a carreira da maioria dos atletas. No Pride Final Conflict de 2003, Minotauro sobreviveu a um mortal chute de esquerda na cabeça, desferido por Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Até aquele momento, todos os oponentes de Cro Cop que haviam recebido esse golpe tombaram, sem sentidos. Minotauro caiu, mas absorveu o golpe, ressurgiu das cinzas no round seguinte e finalizou Mirko com um preciso armlock.

Em seu combate mais famoso, Minotauro enfrentou o ogro Bob Sapp, que pesava cerca de 170kg de músculos. O brasileiro era arremessado por Sapp como se fosse um minúsculo inseto e recebia socos na cabeça capazes de abrir fendas em rochas. A própria terra tremia a cada pancada que Rodrigo recebia. Minotauro apanhou violentamente por 14 minutos e os pobres mortais não acreditavam que ele poderia se recuperar daquilo. Eis que o guerreiro-fênix renasce, usa o poder de seu Jiu-Jitsu para inverter a luta e finalizar o gigante americano, levando o público japonês e sua equipe às lágrimas.

Com a idade, Minotauro passou a enfrentar não somente outros guerreiros, mas também ferimentos incapacitantes. Perdeu parte da visão de um olho, teve de se submeter a cirurgias no joelho e no quadril (a lesão era semelhante àquela que encerrou a carreira do jogador de tênis Gustavo Kuerten). Cada machucado era seguido de um tempo de inatividade e de boatos sobre o fim de sua carreira. E sempre a fênix ressurgia e maravilhava a todos. O renascimento contra Brendan Schaub no primeiro UFC Rio, após 18 meses sem lutar, comprovava a tese de que Rodrigo não era humano.

O mais recente capítulo da saga de Minotauro ocorreu no sábado, no UFC Rio 3. Dez meses depois de ter seu braço quebrado por sua nêmese Frank Mir (todo herói, afinal, tem seu inimigo mortal) e ter de colocar 16 pinos para reparar a ferida, Rodrigo regenerou-se novamente e finalizou Dave Herman. O oponente havia dito que “Jiu-Jitsu não funcionava com ele” e Minotauro fez questão de provar que o americano estava errado.

Minotauro ou Fênix, não importa. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira já construiu sua própria lenda e se tornou um mito genuinamente brasileiro: o do lutador indestrutível, de Jiu-Jitsu apurado e que não desiste nunca.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is best known around the world by his nickname “Minotauro”, the Portuguese for “minotaur”, a half-human, half-bull that inhabited the labyrinth of the King Minos of Ancient Greek mythology. However, considering his performances and life story, Rodrigo is more like another Greek legend: the Phoenix, a bird reborn of its own ashes.

The mythological characteristic of rebirth first arose in his childhood, when at 11 years of age Minotauro was run over by a truck, causing him to endure four days teetering between life and death. How many humans have survived an accident like that and still recovered to the point of becoming professional fighters? In ancient lore, such feats are reserved for demigods like Persus or Hercules.

After setting about improving himself in boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, Minotauro soon began winning championships and, like the great legends, embarked on a fantastic journey replete with extraordinary encounters with the most fabulous of adversaries. It was his odyssey in MMA.

Rodrigo became champion in all the most prestigious tournaments the sport has to offer: Rings, Pride and the UFC. In his epic, he had to be reborn in the most disproportional of match-ups and in situations that would mean the end of most athletes’ careers. At Pride Final Conflict, in 2003, Minotauro survived a deadly left kick to the head by Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Up until that point, all Cro Cop’s opponents who had suffered the blow had been floored, unconscious. Minotauro fell but absorbed the strike, was rose from his ashes in the round that followed and tapped Mirko out with an armbar.

In his most famous fight, Minotauro faced the ogre Bob Sapp, who weighed around 170 kilos (374 lbs) of pure muscle. Sapp tossed the Brazilian around as though he were an insect and pounded on his head with strikes that could split boulders. The earth itself shook with every punch Rodrigo weathered. Minotauro was beaten savagely for 14 minutes, and the poor mortals believed he would never recover. That was when the warrior-phoenix rose again, using his Jiu-Jitsu to turn the tables and tap out the gigantic American, driving the Japanese crowd and his team to tears of joy.

With age, Minotauro went on to face not just other warriors, but incapacitating injuries as well. He lost part of his vision in one eye, had to undergo surgery to his knee and hip (an injury similar to the one that ended tennis player Gustavo Kuerten’s career). Each injury was followed by a period of inactivity and rumors that his career had come to an end. And always the phoenix would again rise and dazzle everyone. The rebirth against Brendan Schaub, at the first UFC Rio, following 18 months of inactivity, was further proof that Rodrigo is not human.

The latest chapter in the saga of Minotauro occurred last Saturday at UFC Rio 3. Ten months after having his arm snapped by his nemesis Frank Mir (after all, every hero has to have his mortal enemy) and have 16 pins put in to fix the damage, Rodrigo again regenerated, tapping out Dave Herman. The opponent had said “Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t work on him”, and Minotauro made a point of proving him wrong.

Whether he’s a minotaur or a phoenix, it doesn’t matter. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has built his own legend and become a genuine Brazilian myth: the indestructible fighter with slick Jiu-Jitsu skills who never, ever gives up.

We’re going to work on making Anderson vs. Jon Jones. I know he doesn’t fight for money but he’ll make a lot of money with this fight. You can bet on it.”

The downpour in Rio de Janeiro was a harbinger of storm clouds at UFC 153, but the show started out slow. The fights on the under card putted along, their outcomes predictable, and the most striking image for those who attended the event was perhaps the spectator wearing a rain coat in the stands, trying to dodge the awkward water spouts of the sold-out HSBC Arena.

The show started out cold, overcast and with an occasional flurry, but conditions improved as the card progressed. The event seemed programmed not just to entertain the 16,844 fans in attendance, but to test some reputations as well.

Could Minotauro still be the efficient Jiu-Jitsu fighters of bygone days? Is Anderson Silva capable of taking out a man with an iron-cast chin? Is Erick Silva indeed a top-five welterweight? Is Glover really the new beast on the block in the light heavyweight division? Is Demian capable of subduing an opponent with such heavy hands? Does Francisco Massaranduba have what it takes to beat a more seasoned opponent? What is Sérgio Moraes’s Jiu-Jitsu really capable of?

Some passed the test, and others didn’t, as you saw for yourself.

In the end, the ones who left the arena happy were the Jiu-Jitsu fans, who for some time hadn’t had the opportunity to beat their drum and chant “Jiu-Jitsu! Jiu-Jitsu!” like they did in unison for Demian, Minotauro and the other gentle-art professors on the card.

And the best part was that the Jiu-Jitsu fest was broadcast live to millions of future practitioners over Rede Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network.

O toró no Rio de Janeiro era prenúncio de tempo ruim no UFC 153, mas o show começou devagar. As lutas do card preliminar seguiam em marcha lenta, com desfechos previsíveis, e a imagem mais marcante para quem foi ao evento talvez tenha sido um torcedor na arquibancada de capa de chuva, tentando se esquivar das goteiras constrangedoras da HSBC Arena, que teve lotação esgotada.

O UFC começou assim, frio, nublado e com pancadas esparsas, mas o clima foi ficando cada vez melhor à medida que as lutas iam avançando. O evento parecia programado não apenas para divertir os 16.844 fãs presentes, mas também para testar algumas reputações.

Seria Minotauro o lutador de Jiu-Jitsu eficiente de outrora? Seria Anderson Silva capaz de derrubar o homem de queixo inexpugnável? Seria Erick Silva um candidato ao top 5 da categoria mesmo? Glover é mesmo o novo bicho-papão dos meio-pesados? Demian seria capaz de domar um oponente de mão pesada novamente? Francisco Massaranduba seria capaz de passar por um rival mais experiente? Do que o Jiu-Jitsu de Serginho Moraes era realmente capaz?

Alguns passaram no teste, outros nem tanto, como vocês viram.

No fim das contas, quem saiu feliz foi o praticante de Jiu-Jitsu, que há muito não abria o berro para gritar o famigerado brado de “Jiu-Jitsu! Jiu-Jitsu!”, entoado em coro por Demian, Minotauro e outros professores.

E o que foi melhor, a festa do Jiu-Jitsu foi televisionada pela Rede Globo para milhões de futuros praticantes, certamente doidos para aprender exatamente como seus ídolos entortam braços, pegam as costas e saem do octagon sem um arranhão.

Today’s birthday boy, our reader Leonardo Luiz Thomaz da Rocha, asked us to put a story together for him as a present. “Comment on Anderson Silva, and how the UFC champ’s Jiu-Jitsu’s going,” he suggested.

The GRACIEMAG.com team felt it was a swell idea, and promptly went off to pick the brains of a handful of Jiu-Jitsu world champions, with official IBJJF gold medals, who have had the pleasure of training with the middleweight kingpin.

The banter ebbs and flows and at one point we tune in to the following gem from a finisher beyond reproach, who we’d rather keep nameless:

“If the spar with Anderson is Jiu-Jitsu, in the gi, I can tap him out about ten times.

Undefeated in six years, Glover Teixeira will be looking to extend that streak even further next month, when he takes on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at the October 13 UFC Rio 3 show; but he already has some pretty lofty plans for the medium term.

In an interview by Deb Blyth printed in last month’s GRACIEMAG, the Luigi Mondelli black belt addressed his goals, the ADCC and an obstacle called Quinton Jackson.

GRACIEMAG.com: How is training for your fight with Quinton “Rampage”Jackson going?

GLOVER TEIXEIRA: John Hackleman has been my main MMA coach since 2005. Before him I was straight Jiu-Jitsu. John taught me my striking. I owe everything to him. I have his style. He trains Chuck Liddell. It’s great to train with Chuck. He’s going to help me more closer to my fight against Rampage. He helps me with my sparring. Chuck knows my style more than anybody. He shows me wrestling, striking… He’s very experienced in MMA, so anything he says I believe him. He follows the sport. He’s not stuck back in the old school MMA game. He’s part of the new generation. He comes in with new and different things all the time—things I’ve never seen before. It’s great to have him here. He knows A LOT.

How do you think you match up against Rampage?

Great! We both like to strike, and we both like to control the octagon. It’s a great fight for the fans. People were asking me five years ago to fight him. It’s gonna be a great fight because of our styles. I’m very excited about this fight!

Would you say that you’ve become more of a striker than a grappler now?

No, I consider myself a mixed martial artist. I’ve never trained Jiu-Jitsu for straight competition. I do have my black belt, but when I started Jiu-Jitsu I already had MMA on my mind. I started training because of Royce Gracie. I watched him and wanted to do Jiu-Jitsu. Then, right after, I started wrestling and boxing. But I love No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. I love ADCC rules and doing the Abu Dhabis. It’s like the UFC of Jiu-Jitsu. You have the best grapplers in the world there, and it’s a great place to test yourself. I would love to do it again.

Was your UFC debut, against Kyle Kingsbury, everything you expected?

When I was in the locker room, I was so happy. I said to my trainers, “This is it guys! This is what we train for. This is the day we’ve been waiting for… the big pay off!” I have fun fighting, no matter what. Yes, it’s the UFC. It’s a big show, with a big crowd. It’s a little more motivational with the crowd getting crazy, but I’m like an old school fighter; I just go and fight. I get in the cage, and if there are two people watching me, I don’t care. I’m excited for the fight, and I’m gonna get the knock out or the submission. I’m only focused on the fight 100%. Fighting in the UFC was different from what I was used to, though. It was so organized. But it doesn’t matter where or when I fight. I just want to fight.

Do you normally have to cut much weight for your fights?

Not too much, but that’s the worst part of any fight. I love to eat. I only had to cut 17 lbs last time. I usually walk around at about 230 lbs. I get down to about 220 lbs about two to three weeks before a fight and then cut the rest the week of. I know exactly the best way to cut weight for me. I’ve been doing this for a long time.

Are you strict about following a game plan or are you more of an intuitive, organic, go-with-the-flow kind of fighter?

You train a little for each fighter, but you’re not going to change your style too much for each guy. It’s the character you possess that’s going to dictate how you fight. So, you set a game plan, but you have to have a different plan for each fighter. You also have to be able to see opportunities as they arise, and that’s why you train so much and spar with so many different guys… good guys—so you learn to see opportunity. Then it’s easy to fill in the gaps. You start believing and you keep going. Experience has helped me develop confidence in my fighting.

What are your strengths compared to Rampage’s

My speed is going to control the pace. I’ll keep pushing him. He’s a tough guy, a great striker with great power. But I’m confident I’m gonna beat him.

If you win, where do you put yourself in line for a title shot?

It’s another step to see what’s going to happen with my manager and Dana White and Joe Silva. Whatever they give me I’ll be happy. The main thing is being the champ. And [Jon Jones] has the title right now, so yeah, I think about it. And I think I match up well against him.

Invicto há seis anos, o monstro mineiro Glover Teixeira enfrenta Quinton “Rampage” Jackson no mês que vem, no UFC Rio 3 de 13 de outubro, mas já tem planos ousados no médio prazo.

Em entrevista dada a Deb Blyth, publicada na Revista NOCAUTE mês passado, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu graduado por Luigi Mondelli falou um pouco sobre metas, o ADCC e um obstáculo chamado Quinton Jackson.

GRACIEMAG.com: Como estão sendo os treinos para a luta com Quinton “Rampage” Jackson?

GLOVER TEIXEIRA. John Hackleman, da equipe californiana The Pit, vem sendo um dos meus técnicos desde 2005. Devo tudo a ele, inclusive meu estilo de luta. Ele treina com Chuck Liddell e isso é ótimo. Espero contar com ele ainda mais à medida que a luta com Rampage se aproximar. Liddell conhece o meu estilo melhor do que ninguém, me dá dicas de wrestling, trocação. É um cara muito experiente no MMA e acredito em tudo o que ele diz. Acho que o Liddell é um cara que acompanha o que acontece no esporte, não é alguém que ficou no passado, e sim faz parte desta nova geração, apresentando novidades o tempo todo, coisas que eu nunca sequer vi. É ótimo tê-lo na equipe.

O que acha do Rampage como oponente? Ele tem dito que pode sair do UFC, de repente se aposentar.

Para mim ele é só mais um cara que cruzou meu caminho. Só quero lutar e vencer. Se for a hora de ele parar, que seja. Mas não estou pensando nisso. Acho que será uma grande luta, pois nós dois gostamos de trocar em pé, de ter controle do octagon. Há mais de cinco anos já ouço as pessoas especulando sobre esse confronto. Estou animado.

Eu me considero um cara do MMA. Nunca treinei Jiu-Jitsu pensando em competir somente no Jiu-Jitsu. Iniciei na arte suave já pensando no MMA. Comecei inspirado no Royce Gracie, percebi que era aquilo que eu queria. Pouco depois comecei também no wrestling e no boxe. Mas gosto mesmo é de Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono. Adoro o ADCC e as regras da competição. É como se fosse o UFC do Jiu-Jitsu. Você tem os melhores grapplers do mundo lá. É uma ótima oportunidade para se testar.

A estreia no UFC 146, em maio, com direito à finalização no R1 contra Kyle Kingsbury, foi  como você esperava?

Eu estava no vestiário, todo feliz, e virei para meus treinadores: “É isso aí, galera, foi para isso que treinamos tanto. Chegou o dia tão esperado. É a hora da grande recompensa.” Sempre me divirto muito lutando, não importa onde. Mas era o UFC! Rola uma motivação a mais, com os torcedores indo à loucura. Mas a verdade é que sou um lutador à moda antiga. Eu vou lá e luto. Quando entro no ringue, mesmo que haja apenas duas pessoas me vendo lutar, para mim não importa. Fico 100% focado na luta.

Você normalmente sofre para bater o peso antes dos eventos?

Não muito. Mas de fato esta é a pior parte antes de qualquer luta. Amo comer. Da última vez tive que perder pouco mais de oito quilos. Normalmente eu peso lá pelos 104kg. Desço para 99,5kg umas duas ou três semanas antes da luta e deixo para perder o resto na semana do evento. Sei exatamente a melhor forma de perder peso. Já venho fazendo isso há um bom tempo.

Você costuma ser bem fiel à estratégia traçada antes da luta ou é do tipo que vai mais pela intuição?

Você sempre treina um pouco de acordo com o adversário. Mas ao mesmo tempo não dá para mudar muito seu estilo. É a sua personalidade que vai ditar como você luta. Então normalmente você estabelece um plano de ação, mas na hora da luta pode escolher entre diversos caminhos a seguir. É preciso avaliar as oportunidades que se apresentam. Por isso treinamos tanto e com tantos caras diferentes. Você aprende a enxergar o caminho. Então acaba ficando fácil de preencher as lacunas. A experiência também ajuda a desenvolver confiança na própria capacidade.

E quais são suas maiores vantagens em relação a Rampage?

Minha velocidade vai ditar o ritmo. Vou forçá-lo o tempo todo. É um cara duro, um grande striker com muita pressão. Mas estou confiante que vou derrotá-lo.

Se você vencer, em que posição em relação ao cinturão você acha estaria?

É mais um passo para vermos o que vai acontecer. Depende do meu manager, do Dana White e do Joe Silva (matchmaker do UFC). O que eles decidirem para mim ficarei feliz. Mas o objetivo principal é ser campeão. E é Jon Jones quem tem o cinturão no momento. Acho que uma luta entre Jon Jones e eu seria muito bem casada.

The fans who already got a hold of their tickets for UFC Rio, set for October 13 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena, just saw the value of their investment shoot through the roof overnight. The reason being that Erik Koch got injured and had to forsake his post as challenger at UFC 153.

“We had two rough weeks here at the UFC after Dan Henderson got injured, and I arrive at work today and find out Eric Koch got injured. But everything worked out; Frankie Edgar, being the warrior he is, accepted the fight right away,” said Dana White. “I’m stoked. I think everyone’s going to be excited about this fight, a match-up a lot of people have been waiting on for some time now.”

A former lightweight champion, brown belt and stalwart boxer, Frankie Edgar trains Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Cachorrão and will be making his debut as a featherweight, after seeing a successful career one division up despite being labeled as “small” for the weight class. Now Aldo, trained by the black belt Dedé Pederneiras, is riding a 14-fight win streak.

Edgar now has a shot at joining a select club in the UFC, made up of Randy Couture and BJ Penn—the champions-of-two-divisions club.

Os fãs que garantiram seus ingressos para o UFC Rio de outubro, marcado para o dia 13 na HSBC Arena, viram suas entradas se valorizarem da noite para o dia. O motivo foi uma contusão de Erik Koch, que tirou o desafiante do card do UFC 153.

“Tivemos duas semanas complicadas aqui no UFC após a contusão de Dan Henderson, e eu chego para trabalhar hoje e fico sabendo que Erik Koch se machucou. Mas tudo deu certo, Frankie Edgar, sendo o guerreiro que é, aceitou a luta na hora”, disse Dana White. “Eu estou amarradão, e acho que todos vão ficar animados para esta luta, um confere que muitos aguardavam faz um tempo”.

Ex-campeão dos leves, o faixa-marrom bom de boxe Frankie Edgar é treinado no Jiu-Jitsu por Ricardo Cachorrão, e faz sua estreia entre os pesos-penas, ele que era visto por muitos como um lutador “pequeno” para o peso leve. Já Aldo, treinado pelo faixa-preta Dedé Pederneiras, vem de uma sequência de 14 vitórias.

Edgar tem agora a chance de entrar para um seleto clube do UFC, formado por Randy Couture e BJ Penn – o clube de campeões em duas categorias.
