In a fight that had heavy advertising tying in Cain Velasquez getting the chance to become the first Mexican UFC heavyweight champion, the current title holder took on then-champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in Anaheim, Calif.

Unlike in recent editions of the pre-event weight-in, there were no scandalous antics during the staredowns. Even so, the main event between Maurício Shogun and Jon Jones, for the light heavyweight title, promises great emotion.

“I feel fine, it’s the greatest opportunity of my life and is definitely a good situation,” said Jones, the challenger.

“He’s certainly a great fighter, but the belt is mine. I see some of the things he said as disrespectful. I can even understand him feeling confident, but tomorrow we’ll see who the better man is,” says Shogun.

Ao contrário das edições recentes, não houve encaradas polêmicas. Mesmo assim, a luta principal entre Maurício Shogun e Jon Jones, que vale o cinturão de meio-pesados, promete grandes emoções.

“Me sinto bem, é a grande oportunidade da minha vida e definitivamente é uma boa situação”, diz Jones, o desafiante.

“Com certeza ele é um grande lutador, mas este cinturão é meu. Encaro algumas coisas que ele disse como desrespeito. Até entendo que ele esteja confiante, mas amanhã a gente vai ver quem é o melhor”, fala Shogun.

Since being tauted as one of the most promising athletes in the light heavyweight division, Luiz “Banha” Cane’s success dropped by the wayside with back-to-back losses. This Saturday at UFC 128 he will be looking to get back on top against Eliot Marshall, a fighter coming off a three-fight win streak.

“My problem is that sometimes I bring too much emotion into my fights, and I learned, in the hardest way possible, that that is a mistake. Against Cyrille Diabate (last fight) I was doing well, I managed a knockdown early in the fight, but when we went back to our feet and clinched I saw blood pouring from my nose. At that very moment I threw strategy to the wind, and everyone saw what happened after that. It’s stupid, but it’s true,” he says in analysis.

“Going without a fight (from May 2010 to March 2011) was important for me to focus 100% on my work. Joe Silva (UFC matchmaker) gave me enough time to organize my life after undergoing nose surgery, and then I moved to my new team, The Armory. I’m much more motivated because of Joe’s understanding regarding my situation,” adds Banha.

On this Saturday’s fight, the fighter promises to put on a show:

I’m not going to put off going for the knockout out of fear of putting myself at risk after suffering two losses. What I learned and am working on here at The Armory is to fight smart. My objective hasn’t changed, I want the tapout or knockout,” he says in finishing.

Depois de se tornar um dos atletas mais promissores na categoria de meio-pesados, Luiz Cane, o Banha, acabou amargurando duas derrotas seguidas. Neste sábado, no UFC 128, evento que promete agitar Nova Jersey e que os fãs também podem conferir ao vivo no Canal Combate, o lutador promete dar a volta por cima. O adversário é Eliot Marshall, que vem numa série de três resultados positivos.

“Meu problema é que às vezes coloco muita emoção em minhas lutas e aprendi, da forma mais difícil, que isso é um erro. Contra o Cyrille Diabate (última luta), eu estava indo bem, consegui um knockdown no princípio da luta, mas quando ela voltou em pé e nós clinchamos vi sangue escorrendo do meu nariz. No mesmo instante, esqueci a estratégia e todo mundo viu o que aconteceu. É estúpido, mas é a verdade”, analisa.

“Ficar sem lutar (de maio de 2010 a março de 2011) foi importante para focar 100% no meu trabalho. Joe Silva (matchmaker do UFC) me deu tempo suficiente para organizar a minha vida depois de uma cirurgia de nariz, junto com a mudança para minha nova equipe, a The Armory. Estou muito mais motivado após a compreensão que o Joe teve com a minha situação”, completa Banha.

Sobre o combate deste sábado, o lutador promete dar show.

“Eu não vou deixar de procurar o nocaute com o pensamento de não me arriscar após duas derrotas. O que eu aprendi e estou trabalhando aqui na equipe The Armory é lutar com inteligência. Meu objetivo não se alterou, quero finalizar ou nocautear”, encerra.

Um total de 75 mil dólares foi pago aos melhores da noite no UFC 126, neste sábado, em Las Vegas.

Pela melhor finalização da noite, uma guilhotina sobre Ryan Bader, Jon Jones recebeu esta quantia. Já o melhor nocaute, como não poderia deixar de ser, foi o de Anderson Silva sobre Vitor Belfort. Já a melhor luta foi a vitória de Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone contra Paul Kelly.

A total of seventy five thousand dollars was paid for “Best of” honors at UFC 126 this Saturday in Las Vegas.

As submission of the night, Jon Jones’s guillotine choke over Ryan Bader earned him his extra keep. Now best knockout could only go to Anderson Silva, for the extraordinary manner in which he ended his title defense against Belfort. Now fight of the night went to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone against Paul Kelly.

Rodrigo Comprido, bicampeão mundial absoluto de Jiu-Jitsu, treina o chão do ex-campeão do Ultimate Borck Lesnar. Na luta contra Cain Velasquez, no UFC 121, acabou vendo seu atleta derrotado. Mesmo assim, ficou impressionado. 

“A luta foi incrível, nunca vi dois pesos pesados partirem para dentro com tanta vontade. Certamente foi uma das lutas mais emocionantes da categoria. Pessoalmente, aprendi muito  e vou me certificar para que da próxima vez que estiver no corner contra o Velasquez meu lutador saia de braço levantado”, analisa. 

Agora Cain vai ter Junior Cigano pela frente na primeira defesa de cinturão. Muitos acreditam que vai ser duro alguém bater o atual campeão. Comprido não acha impossível. 

“Boto fé no Cigano e vou torcer muito. Sei que ele vai estar afiado no chão, porque treina com feras como o Demian Maia, Minotauro e Minotouro”, encerra.

Two-time absolute world champion of Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo Comprido works with former UFC champion Brock Lesnar on his ground game. He ended up watching his athlete lose his belt to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. Even so, he was impressed.

“It was an incredible fight, I’ve never seen two heavyweights go at it with such gusto. It was certainly one of the most exciting fights the division’s ever seen. Personally, I learned a lot and can assure you that the next time I’m in the corner against Velasquez, my fighter’s will be the one raised,” he says in analysis.

Now Cain will have Junior Cigano ahead of him for his first title defense. A great number of people believe the champion will be a tough nut to crack. Comprido feels it isn’t impossible.

“I have faith in Cigano and am rooting for him. I know he’ll be slick on the ground because he trains with beasts like Demian Maia, Minotauro, and Minotouro,” he says in closing.

After losing three of his last four fights in the UFC – the last to Brendan Schaub –, the promotion where he fought since 2005 ended up giving Gabriel Gonzaga his walking papers and now the fighter is considering retirement from MMA.

“A lot of folks are asking me the same thing: whether I’ll fight again. I really don’t know,” he said on a video posted on Youtube.

“In MMA I’m not sure, because I won’t fight if it isn’t for much money. The UFC paid me well. There are other organizations and, if they make me a good offer, I’ll fight again. But I won’t be fighting too soon; I don’t know if they’ll pay me what I’m worth,” he adds.

In this next phase of his life, “Napão” may again focus on Jiu-Jitsu, his MMA roots, with his sights set on the 2011 ADCC.

“The ADCC is coming up and I’ll train for that. I should compete in some grappling tournaments again,” he remarks.

Depois de perder em três das últimas quatro lutas no UFC – a última para Brendan Schaub -, organização em que lutava desde 2005, e acabar afstado do evento, Gabriel Gonzaga, o Napão, considera a aposentadoria no MMA.

“Muitas pessoas estão me fazendo a mesma pergunta: se vou lutar de novo? Realmente, não sei”, diz num vídeo postado na sua página no Youtube.

“No MMA não sei, porque não vou lutar por pouco dinheiro. O UFC me pagava bem. Há outras organizações e, se me oferecerem um bom preço, lutarei novamente. Mas não vou lutar tão em breve, não sei se vão me pagar o que eu mereço”, completa.

Nesta nova fase, Napão deve focar novamente no Jiu-Jitsu, sua raiz no vale-tudo, de olho na edição do ADCC que acontece em 2011.

“Tem o ADCC e treinarei para isso. Devo participar de competições de grappling novamente”, comenta.

Lesnar impunha medo, um gigante com mais de 120kg. Entretanto, não há como negar, muitas eram as críticas sobre as qualidades técnicas de Brock, conhecido por ter a força bruta como principal aliado no caminho às vitórias. 

No último sábado, no UFC 121, na Califórnia, Cain Velasquez mostrou que a técnica pode superar a força. Tendo pesado pelo menos 10kg a menos que Brock, e com menor estatura, segurou a pressão nos primeiros instantes para depois metralhar o oponente com socos, o que garantiu o nocaute em apenas 4min12s de combate. 

Não demorou para que especialistas e fãs por todo o planeta passassem a idolatrar o novo campeão. Um adjetivo muito usado foi “incrível” e até mesmo o ilustre admirador Sylvester Stallone, amante das lutas, se pronunciou através do Twitter:   

“O Cain só perde dele mesmo”, postou.

Cain é o atual campeão de pesados do UFC, o que não é pouca coisa, e sua qualidade técnica merece muito respeito. Entretanto, isso é o bastante para adjetivá-lo como “incrível”, sem ter feito ainda nenhuma defesa de título? 

Para muitos, a resposta é sim. Entretanto, podemos analisar que Velasquez conta com apenas nove lutas no cartel, muito menos que outros lutadores consagrados como Fedor Emelianenko, Rodrigo Minotauro, Matt Hughes, Wanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson… E por aí vai. 

Assim como Lesnar, Velasquez não é tão experiente no MMA e podemos recordar lutadores que surgiram com vitórias incríveis e não conseguiram manter o nível por muito tempo – não quero afirmar que este seja o caso. 

Cain, provavelmente, tem um futuro brilhante. Mas, mesmo sendo o atual campeão do UFC, ainda tem o que provar para que o elogio “incrível” não se torne algo comum. O próximo desafio, provavelmente, é contra Junior Cigano, outra grande oportunidade de mostrar suas qualidades. 

Se continuar vencendo, evitando o rodízio de campeões que às vezes impera no Ultimate, em que o melhor lutador do mundo se torna medíocre da noite para o dia – pelo menos na visão de muitos fãs -, em pouco tempo poderá ser comparado a outros grandes astros que fizeram a história desse esporte.
