Rich Franklin knocked out Chuck Liddell at UFC 115, but left the bout with a broken arm after defending kicks from the Iceman. As they say in Brazil, ‘There’s good that can come of misfortune,’ and it applies nicely to this situation.

The cast on Franklin’s arm he himself autographed, as did Chuck Liddell, the loser of the match. MMA aficionados will have a chance to acquire the unusual keepsake and other autographed more usual autographed items like T-shirts in a raffle.

The best part is that the money brought in will be donated to a charity for breast cancer victims.

Rich Franklin nocauteou Chuck Liddell no UFC 115, mas saiu do desafio com o braço quebrado depois de defender um dos chutes do Iceman. E o famoso ditado ‘Há males que vem para o bem’ pode ser muito bem usado dessa vez. 

A atadura usada no braço de Franklin vai ser autografada pelo próprio, assim que for retirada, e já foi por Chuck Liddell, o derrotado no confronto. Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin beat another former champion in Chuck Liddell this Saturday at UFC 115. The first-round knockout moved the math teacher turned fighter a few steps up the list of challengers to the light heavyweight title now held by Mauricio Shogun. His good-natured ways and friendly face reminiscent of comedian Jim Carry fits the fighter’s personality. Our collaborator Nalty Jr had a chat with the beast that was recently published in Brazil’s NOCAUTE magazine.

GRACIEMAG.com offers up a few excerpts from the conversation:

Do you feel it’s important to convey a good image of MMA athletes?

I feel it’s just important to be who you are. Be yourself in a positive way.

What brought you to take up MMA?

I’ve practiced martial arts ever since I was little. My dad put me in karate class when I was 12. I started MMA to keep in shape during college and fuel my competitiveness. After watching some MMA fights I realized a lot of fighters who were good at boxing and muay thai couldn’t manage to keep the fight standing. That’s when I started training Jiu-Jitsu.

You faced Lyoto Machida in Japan when he wasn’t too well known. Would you like revenge for the loss

I think about that fight a lot. Truth is, a lot of folks don’t even know I fought Lyoto. Revenge is a really strong word. Perhaps just a rematch, who knows?

And what about your win over Wanderlei Silva?

It was really great to beat a guy like Wand, a great fighter. The fans were talking about the matchup ever since the days of Pride, but we were in different organizations. Beating Wanderlei makes me feel like I accomplished my mission and did my work just right.

Is it harder to perform well in the ring or out of it?

To perform well in your personal life is much harder than to perform well in the octagon. A fight lasts 15 or 25 minutes. Life is for forever.

What’s the secret to becoming champion?

Hard work. You have to take what you do seriously. Otherwise, you won’t make it anywhere. You have to work on all the weapons you’ll need and not limit yourself to one style or another.

What do you have to say to those who criticize MMA?

Those folks haven’t a clue about what the sport’s about these days. They need to become better informed, educate themselves as to present day MMA.

Mirko Cro Cop’s request was answered. It’s worth remembering, though, that he deserved it. The Croatian was lagging against Pat Barry at this Saturday’s UFC 115 event in Canada. But he rallied back and won by rear-naked choke, ditching his striker background to show his fine-tuned Jiu-Jitsu.

After the bout the former policeman asked Dana White for the submission of the night and fight of the night awards. The fight of the night request didn’t pan out, but Cro Cop’s submission netted him an extra 85 thousand dollars.

The best knockout bonus predictably went to Rich Franklin. With a cross right on the button followed by two more punches, he put Chuck Liddell’s lights out.

The award for best fight want to Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald, in a battle won by the former.

This Saturday’s UFC 115 event in Canada featured a number of great bouts. In the evening’s main event, Rich Franklin put on an electrifying performance in overcoming Chuck Liddell. Earlier on Cro Cop showed his Jiu-Jitsu is up to speed. In the co-main event Martin Kampmann overcame Paulo Thiago. Check out how it all went:

Chuck Liddell vs Rich Franklin

The bout between former UFC champions Rich Franklin and Chuck Liddell was an all out war. In just one round both landed powerful strikes and found themselves in sticky situations. Liddell was getting the better of the exchange, having landed solid punches and gotten the take down. Frankin felt his arm break and probably would have had to abandon the fight during the between-round break.

However, before the end of the first round, after eating an elbow from the Mohican, who launched a haphazard attack, Franklin landed a powerful cross. Liddell, in probably his last UFC appearance, hit the canvas and took further punishment with just five seconds remaining in the round.

Pat Barry vs Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

Pat Barry paid a steep price for taking on seasoned veteran Mirko Cro Cop. Barry landed two knockdowns within the first round, but didn’t go for the finish. He let the fight play out on the feet. Cro Cro Cop went on to find his feet in the second round, when he showed how his Jiu-Jitsu has evolved by making it to the mount and then back mount.
In the final round Cro Cop also showed how his superior physical conditioning, launching a standup onslaught. After battering Barry with blows the Croatian slid to his opponent’s back and finished up with a rear-naked choke. After the affair had ended a content Dana White grabbed the microphone and announced the choke would yield Mirko the bonus for submission of the night.

Martin Kampmann vs Paulo Thiago

Accompanied by Randy Couture, Denmark’s Martin Kampmann dominated his three-round affair with Paulo Thiago. He had the edge both standing and on the ground. He caught the Brazilian by the neck with a guillotine choke and then arm-and-neck choke, and landed solid strikes on the feet. In the end Martin took the unanimous-decision win.

Mirko Cro Cop pediu e foi atendido. Mas, cabe lembrar, houve merecimento. O croata vinha tomando um atraso de Pat Barry no UFC 115, neste sábado, no Canadá. Mas deu a volta por cima e finalizou com um mata-leão, fugindo das raízes de striker e mostrando que o Jiu-Jitsu está afiado. 

Ao fim do combate, o ex-policial pediu a Dana White o prêmio pela finalização e melhor luta da noite. O de melhor luta não deu, mas a finalização foi para Cro Cop, o que valeu 85 mil dólares a mais na bolsa. 

Já o melhor nocaute foi, previsivelmente, para Rich Franklin. Com um cruzado de encontro certeiro e mais dois socos, ele desligou Chuck Liddell da tomada. 

O prêmio de melhor luta foi para Carlos Condit e Rory MacDonald, em desafio vencido pelo primeiro.

O UFC 115, no Canadá, contou com boas lutas neste sábado. No combate principal, Rich Franklin venceu Chuck Liddell numa apresentação eletrizante. Já Cro Cop mostrou que sabe Jiu-Jitsu e finalizou. Em outra luta principal, Martin Kampmann foi melhor que Paulo Thiago. Confira como foi tudo:

Chuck Liddell x Rich Franklin

O combate entre Rich Franklin e Chuck Liddell foi uma verdadeira Guerra. Em apenas um round, ambos se acertaram forte na trocação e estiveram em situações complicadas. Liddell, inclusive, vinha melhor, tendo conectado bons socos e quedado. Franklin sentiu o braço quebrar, provavelmente desistiria no intervalo.

Entretanto, até o final do round tudo pode acontecer. Depois de uma cotovelada do moicano, que partiu desgovernado para cima, Franklin encaixou um potente cruzado. Liddell, na provável última luta no UFC, caiu nocauteado e recebeu mais dois socos, quando faltavam apenas 5s para o intervalo. Nem pôde aparecer na foto do triunfo.

Pat Barry x Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

Muito caro, foi isso o que pagou Pat Barry na luta contra o veterano Mirko Cro Cop. Barry aplicou dois knockdowns no primeiro round, mas não partiu para definir. Deixava a luta voltar em pé. Cro Cop passou a se encontrar no octagon e já levou vantagem na segunda parcial, quando mostrou evolução no Jiu-Jitsu, com uma montada e pegada de costas.

No round final, Cro Cop mostrou que ainda tem gás. Bem melhor fisicamente, partiu para trocação. Depois de metralhar Barry com socos, o croata passou para as costas e finalizou com um mata-leão. Contente, tomou o microfone e pediu a Dana White o bônus de finalização e melhor luta da noite.   

Martin Kampmann x Paulo Thiago

Acompanhado de Randy Couture, o dinamarquês Martin Kampmann dominou os três rounds contra Paulo Thiago. Levou vantagem tanto na trocação quanto no chão. Apertou o pescoço do brasileiro na guilhotina e no katagatami e conectou bons socos em pé. Ao final,a vitória foi por decisão unânime para Martin.

O Bad Boy acabou demitido do reality show e, em seu lugar, entrou Rich Franklin, adversário de Chuck neste sábado, no UFC 115, no Canadá. Entretanto, o ódio por Tito continua forte, como podemos perceber nas declarações feitas ao nosso correspondente Nalty Jr., publicadas recentemente na revista NOCAUTE e reproduzidas no GRACIEMAG.com. 

“O único lutador que realmente me tira do sério é o Tito. Lutei com ele duas vezes e entrei no octagon, literalmente, querendo destruí-lo. Queria calar a boca dele, porque ele fala muitas besteiras. Quero machucá-lo. Não gosto do Tito e nem das atitudes dele”, dispara.

Sobre a alegação de lesão por parte de Ortiz:

“Isso é de dar vergonha. Ele é lutador e tem que lutar. Ninguém quer ouvir desculpa. Na última luta ele estava morto na coletiva de imprensa e disse que não daria desculpas. O que se viu foram 20 cansativos minutos de desculpas. Para que ele vai continuar falando? Diz para ele calar a boca.”

Liddell já bateu o desafeto em duas oportunidades no octagon, no UFC 47 e 66. O Iceman não vê perigo no inimigo, além da boca.

“O mais perigoso é o que sai da boca dele (risos)! Ele é o cara mais perigoso quando abre a boca. Tito se faz de um dos mais perigosos, um dos melhores. Ele é marqueteiro e se promove muito bem. Honestamente, não vejo nada perigoso no jogo dele”, encerra.
