Robert Drysdale is a hot issue in MMA. The fighter, son of an American father and a Brazilian mother, was born in America but raised in Brazil. As an adult and with a black belt, he returned to Las Vegas where he opened his own gym, Drysdale BJJ, and began to help in the training of big UFC names, like Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva and Randy Couture, who encouraged him to start in MMA.

After becoming the ADCC 2007 absolute champion, Drysdale left the competitions on the mats to join the world of cages, but like he says, Jiu-Jitsu remained being more than a sport, it is a lifestyle for him.

Proof of this is found in all his professional fights. The phenomenon of the gentle art has won by submission in the first round every fight. The last one happened Friday, April 12, at Legacy FC 19. The light heavyweight faced D.J. Linderman, an experienced fighter who has fought in events like Bellator and WSOF, and the Brazilian won with a nice rear-naked choke.

Now that he is undefeated for six fights, Drysdale aims for the UFC and wants to fight the best in the category. The truth is that his performance within the cages has drawn the attention of the leaders of the sport, and it is quite possible that we will see Drysdale’s BJJ shining on the biggest stage in the world of MMA, in a short time.

His contact with the UFC is old. The professional fighter was one of the coaches of Team Mir on “TUF 8” in 2008. The following year, Drysdale prepared Forrest Griffin prepared for UFC 101, which had the historic title fight between the American and the middleweight champion, Anderson Silva. The program “Countdown to UFC 101” put the spotlight on Drysdale, giving prominence to the coach, who went on to help other stars of the organization.

A black belt from the Gracie Tijuca stable, Vinicius “Pezão” Magalhães had announced over Twitter that he will be join the competition at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship in California. Late Monday night, however, the fighter posted that he has pulled out: he received an offer to train Chael Sonnen for his fight with Anderson Silva in Rio de Janeiro before a crowd of 80,000.

“Forget my last post about competing. Instead, I’m going to Oregon to help the UFC middleweight champion get ready for a title fight in Brazil,” wrote Vinny, harping on the same hokey chord as Sonnen, about being the current champion—the outcome of the last fight, the triangle, was of no significance to the title challenger.

MODERN, MMA-GEARED JIU-JITSU

A scholar when it comes to applying Jiu-Jitsu’s MMA application, Vinny is a coach with some serious clout. He’s wreaked all kinds of havoc in the gi, making it to the top as a brown belt at the 2005 World Championship. After having relocated to the USA, he shed his gi and won the 2011 ADCC. In MMA, Vinny has amassed a record of nine wins in 15 fights, and he was a finalist in the eighth season of TUF, in 2008, during which time he a spat with team captain Minotauro, who happens to be the leader of the team on which Anderson Silva trains.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da Gracie Tijuca, Vinicius “Pezão” Magalhães havia anunciado pelo Twitter que iria disputar o Campeonato Mundial na Califórnia. Na madrugada de segunda-feira, no entanto, o lutador disse que desistiu: recebeu uma proposta para treinar Chael Sonnen para a luta contra Anderson Silva, no Rio de Janeiro, para um público de 80 mil torcedores.

“Esqueçam meu último post sobre competir. Em vez disso, vou para o Oregon ajudar o campeão dos médios do UFC a se preparar para a luta do título no Brasil”, escreveu Vinny, repetindo o papo-furado de Sonnen de ser o atual campeão – o resultado da luta anterior, e o triângulo, foram um “detalhe” para o wrestler americano.

Jiu-Jitsu moderno e voltado para o MMA

Estudioso do Jiu-Jitsu aplicado ao MMA, Vinny é um treinador com credenciais. A fera já aprontou e muito no pano, chegando ao topo do absoluto marrom no Campeonato Mundial de 2005. Após partir para os EUA, venceu sem kimono o ADCC 2011. No MMA, Vinny acumula nove triunfos em 15 lutas, e foi finalista da oitava edição do TUF, em 2008, após se desentender no programa com o capitão Minotauro, por acaso líder da equipe de Anderson Silva.

Coming off a 23-win in his first fight since leaving the UFC, Fabrício Morango plans to put on a show that will get him back into the world’s biggest event.

Thus, on May 6, he takes on another UFC alumnus: winner of tTe Ultimate Fighter reality show season 8, Efrain Escudero. The fight takes place at the next installment of Tachi Palace Fights, in California.

“It’s a great opportunity for me, against an athlete who is a big draw here in the USA. I’ve been training a lot for this challenge, put a lot of emphasis on wrestling, but I’m ready for anything,” Morango told GRACIEMAG.com.

No longer in the UFC, the fighter is happy at Tachi Fights. He made his last appearance there on February 18, knocking Steve Lopez out with a high kick to the head.

“The event is cool, and the good part is that they match me up in new fights quickly,” he says.

“I’m content, but the goal is to return to the UFC. That’s what all great fighters want and this fight against Escudero will be important in this objective.”

And a win here would point to new challenges, even within Tachi.

“The winner of this fight gets a shot at the title. So it’s one more reason to go for the win,” he said in finishing.

Vindo de uma vitória fulminante em apenas 23 segundos na primeira luta depois de deixar o UFC, Fabrício Morango espera fazer bonito para voltar a brilhar no maior evento da atualidade.

Para isso, nada melhor que o próximo desafio. No dia 6 de maio, o faixa-preta encara o campeão da oitava edição do reality show do Ultimate (TUF 8), Efrain Escudero. A luta acontece na próxima edição do Tachi Palace Fights, na Califórnia.

“É uma grande oportunidade para mim, contra um atleta de grande apelo aqui nos EUA. Venho treinando muito para este desafio, dei bastante ênfase ao wrestling também, mas estou preparado para tudo”, comenta Morango ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Fora do UFC, o lutador está contente no Tachi Fights. Ele se apresentou por lá no dia 18 de fevereiro e, com um chute alto, na cabeça, nocauteou Steve Lopez.

“O evento é bacana e o bom é que eles me colocam rapidamente para fazer novas lutas”, diz.

“Estou satisfeito, mas a meta é voltar ao UFC. Todos os grandes lutadores querem isso e essa luta contra o Escudero vai ter importância para este objetivo.”

E a vitória acena para novos desafios, mesmo dentro do Tachi.

“O vencedor desse combate deve ter direito a disputar o cinturão. Então é mais um motivo para buscar com tudo essa vitória”, encerra.

No dia 25 de setembro, em Indianápolis, o invicto Ryan Bader (11 lutas) encara Rogério Minotouro no octagon do UFC 119. Campeão da 8ª edição do reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”, Bader fora treinado apelo irmão gêmeo de Minotouro, Rodrigo Minotauro. Fã de Minota, agora o especialista em wrestling vai com tudo para cima do seu irmão.

“Ele é um grande lutador e uma grande pessoa. Respeito muito o que ele tem feito no esporte. Mas está no meu caminho e agora eu preciso vencê-lo. Ele é grande no chão e no boxe, mas não chuta tanto. Sua parte mais fraca é o wrestling, como mostrou contra Jason Brilz (última luta de Minoto), quando foi apertado numa guilhotina. Posso vencê-lo, definitivamente”, diz ao site da revista Fighters Only.

Bader sabe em que tem que melhorar para surpreender Minotouro.

“O jogo de chão vem naturalmente, mas a trocação é difícil. Eu trabalho cinco dias por semana a parte de trocação. Tenho excelentes treinadores de boxe e muay thai e tive grandes progressos”, comenta.

Entretanto, Rogério conta com um trunfo para o combate. O mano Minotauro conhece muito bem os segredos de Bader.

“É um cara que eu treinei durante uns três meses na casa do UFC (The Ultimate Fighter) e ele foi o campeão. É um garoto que gosto, bom de wrestling, tem a mão dura, mas acho que o Rogério é mais experiente e tem o chão e a trocação melhores. Na parte de wrestling ele é melhor, mas o Rogério está numa fase muito boa e quer disputar o cinturão”, falou Minota ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Rogério Minotouro também sabe no que tem que tomar mais cuidado com o oponente.

“É um cara duríssimo, que conseguiu unir o bom wrestling com a trocação. É um adversário de peso. Luta dura, mas vou para cima no Jiu-Jitsu e no boxe. É uma luta que terei que usar bastante o Jiu-Jitsu, será uma arma, mas o boxe está bom também”, apostou.
