How would you react if you were preparing to teach Jiu-Jitsu to your more advanced students and, out of nowhere, the president of the UFC popped up to watch?

That’s what three-time world champion Guilherme Mendes, a professor in Costa Mesa, California, experienced on Friday.

The Ramon Lemos student told of how that day was remarkable for the GMA academy Art of Jiu-Jitsu:

“We did not expect it. I was teaching and he suddenly arrived and started watching. We are teachers of Nick ‘The Tooth,’ who is friends with him and who actually invited Dana to come check out the gym and the workout. He was very cool with me and all the students!” said the light featherweight black-belt.

“We are delighted with this recognition of our work—this year we have received the visit of champions like BJ Penn, Vitor Belfort, Ronda Rousey, Luke Rockhold and now the visit of the renowned Dana White. Not to mention guys like Tom Watson, Thales Leites’ opponent at UFC Rio, who trains with us here at the academy,” said Gui.

Besides MMA stars, brothers Rafael and Gui Mendes this year also exchanged information with legends from other sports, like surfers Kelly Slater and Joel Tudor, who trained last week at AOJ, and skateboarder Christian Hosoi, who has taken a close look at the Mendes Bro’s style.

Could Dana White drop by again, maybe for a no-gi session?

After four years away from the biggest MMA franchise in the world, Thales Leites will return to the UFC to, once again, tread the path to the top. He, who once challenged Anderson Silva’s middleweight belt, will be making his comeback bout at UFC 163, also known as UFC Rio 4, on Aug. 3 at the HSBC Arena.

While he devoured a white cheese sandwich at Nova União, Thales had a chat with GRACIEMAG about his opponent, Tom Watson, and his long awaited return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Check out the best parts of the conversation:

GRACIEMAG.com:  Almost a year without fighting due to a knee injury, and you’re going straight back to the UFC. How are you doing psychologically?

THALES LEITES: It’s been 10 months since my surgery. I don’t even remember I was injured. I’ve recovered completely. The instinct of protecting my injured knee has gone away. Each day I gain more confidence in putting it out there in the line of fire. It’s brand new again.

And what’s the difference between 2009 Thales and the UFC-returning Thales?

I’m more mature. I have a different mind. I’ve learned to pace my fights better – not more, better. I’m more focused and stronger, both physically and psychologically. I’ve reached 24 bouts in my career and am ready for every fighting situation. And also I’ve got my feet on the ground. I’m realistic. The energy is great and I’ll be fighting in Rio in front of my family and friends. I’m happy.

And about Tom Watson, do you know his game already?

I’ve seen some of his fights. He used to compete in MFC in Canada. He’s a competent striker and has some decent ground moves, but it’s nothing that will make me refrain from fighting stand-up. If we’re standing, then fine, and if we’re on the ground, even better. I’ll sing along to the fight’s tune. But I represent the gentle art, and I’ll always be looking for a submission.

How do you place yourself in such a complicated division as the UFC’s middleweight?

For now my mind is on Tom Watson. I haven’t considered the division as a whole, but what I can say is that it’s way tougher than when I made my UFC debut back in 2006. Now they have a lot of strong fighters, especially since the arrival of the Strikeforce athletes. So I want to slowly but surely make my way in there.

Is there a different kind of pressure surrounding you, considering you once challenged Anderson Silva for his middleweight belt?

If there is, I’m unaware. I don’t care about that. I’m coming back now, but I also have UFC experience to fall back on, having fought eight times between 2006 and 2009. I’ll be all right as far as that.

How do you think your next fight will go?

He will be looking to fight standing and I’ll try to apply my game. Neither one is gonna back down, so I think the fight will not go the distance. That’s how I view my return – step by step, calmly making my way.

Após quatro anos afastado da maior organização de MMA do mundo, Thales Leites retorna ao UFC buscando trilhar mais uma vez seu caminho até o topo. Ele, que já desafiou Anderson Silva pelo cinturão dos pesos médios do Ultimate, fará seu embate de retorno no UFC 163, também chamado de UFC Rio 4, no dia 3 de agosto, na HSBC Arena.

Enquanto traçava um sanduba de queijo minas com café na Nova União, Thales bateu um papo com GRACIEMAG sobre seu adversário, Tom Watson, e sobre o seu aguardado retorno ao UFC. Confira os melhores trechos da conversa:

GRACIEMAG.com:  Quase um ano parado por conta de uma lesão no joelho e já vai voltar direto para o UFC. Como fica o psicológico?

Thales Leites: Assim, eu completei dez meses da operação. Eu nem lembro mais que ele está machucado. Já me recuperei 100%. O psicológico de defender o joelho operado já passou. Cada dia que passa ganho mais confiança de colocar ele na reta. Já está novo em folha.

E qual a diferença do Thales que lutou em 2009 para o Thales que retorna ao UFC?

Estou mais maduro. A cabeça é outra. Aprendi a cadenciar melhor nas lutas, não cadenciar mais, e sim melhor. Estou muito focado e forte, tanto físico quanto psicologicamente. Acumulei 24 lutas na carreira, estou preparado para qualquer situação em luta. E também, não estou vislumbrado. Estou com os pés no chão. A energia será muito boa, de lutar no Rio, com família e amigos presentes. Estou feliz.

E sobre o seu oponente, o Tom Watson, já conhecia o jogo dele?

Já vi algumas lutas dele. Ele lutava no MFC, no Canadá, e eu provavelmente enfrentaria ele lá. É um striker, é bom em pé, e tem suas finalizações. Mas não é algo que me impeça de lutar em pé. Se for em pé, eu vou em pé, e se for para o chão, melhor ainda. Vou dançar conforme a música. Mas eu represento a arte suave, e sempre vou buscar a finalização.

Como você vê sua projeção nos médios, uma categoria bem complicada do Ultimate?

Minha mente está focada no Tom Watson, ainda não pensei muito na categoria como um geral, mas o que eu posso dizer é que a divisão de médios está muito mais difícil do que quando eu entrei no UFC,  em 2006. Agora nós temos muitos cascas-grossas, ainda mais com a chegada do pessoal do Strikeforce. Então eu quero buscar meu espaço devagar.

Existe uma pressão diferente em sua volta, por você já ter desafiado o cinturão dos médios enfrentando o Anderson Silva?

Se tem, eu não sei. Eu não me pressiono quanto a isso.  Eu estou voltando agora, mas já tenho uma experiência no UFC, fiz oito lutas entre 2006 e 2009. Vou estar bem quanto a isso.

Como você acha que vai ser o andamento do seu embate e como você projeta o retorno do Thales Leites ao UFC?

Ele vai buscar a luta em pé, eu vou tentar aplicar o meu jogo. Ninguém vai recuar, então eu acho que vai terminar antes dos três assaltos. Meu retorno vai ser assim, passo a passo, com calma.

The card for UFC 164 is taking shape and filling with Brazilian MMA stars.

Beasts of Jiu-Jitsu, Vinny Magalhaes and Thales Leites were confirmed for the event that will be held on Aug. 3, which features a title fight between Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis in the main event.

Magalhaes is coming off a loss to Phil Davis at UFC 159, and in May began some teasing between himself and Anthony Perosh via Twitter. The Australian last fought in July 2012 and was knocked out by Ryan Jimmo in just seven seconds. Now, the light heavyweights meet in a duel in which both need to win to regain security in the division.

The UFC 164 also marks one of the most anticipated returns in the UFC Octagon with Leites. The Brazilian will face Tom Watson after four years away from the franchise. The information was confirmed by UOL on Thursday afternoon.

Leites, a former title challenger to Anderson Silva, spent time in other organizations with good results before the announcement of his UFC return.

O card do UFC Rio 4 vai tomando forma e pelo jeito mantendo a estratégia de escalar estrelas do MMA brasileiro. Feras do Jiu-Jitsu, Vinny Pezão e Thales Leites foram confirmados no evento que será realizado no dia 3 de agosto, e terá a disputa de cinturão entre José Aldo e Anthony Pettis na luta principal.

Vinny Pezão vem de derrota para Phil Davis no UFC 159, e em maio começaram algumas provocações entre ele e  Anthony Perosh, através do Twitter. O australiano lutou pela última vez em julho de 2012 e foi nocauteado por Ryan Jimmo em apenas sete segundos. Agora, os meio-pesados se encontram em um duelo em que ambos precisam da vitória para se firmar na categoria. A maior parte dos resultados positivos do cartel de Perosh vieram por finalização, afinal o lutador é um casca grossa de primeira na arte suave.

O UFC Rio 4 marca também um dos retornos mais aguardados no octógono do Ultimate. O brasileiro Thales Leites enfrentará Tom Watson, após quatro anos longe da franquia. A informação foi confirmada pelo jornalista Jorge Corrêa do UOL na tarde desta quinta-feira.

O ex-desafiante, que lutou contra Anderson Silva em 2009 passou por outras organizações com bons resultados e vai encarar o striker Tom Watson em sua reestreia.
