In another edition of its GP, Spyder Jiu-Jitsu Invitational mixed elite athletes with lower-belt ones (black, brown and purple) vying for the top of the podium and some healthy prize money. The card played out in the first hours of this Saturday in Seoul, South Korea.

The fights were split into two divisions: under 76kg and under 100kg. In the lighter division, Matheus Lutes, Daniel Sathler, Augusto Tanquinho, Lucas Rocha, Levi Jones-Leary, Mathias Luna, Osvaldo Queixinho and Sanghyeon Lee fought in the groups stage, whereas the heavier division featured Tim Spriggs, Cláudio Calasans, Rudson Mateus, Matheus Diniz, Marcos Tinoco, Anderson Munis, Roberto Jimenez and Hyungcheul Kim.

In the under-76kg division, unstoppable brown-belt Matheus Lutes, a promising fighter from Marcelo Garcia’s Alliance, shone. He defeated world champion Augusto Tanquinho in the semifinals and then beat black-belt Osvaldo “Queixinho” Moizinho by three advantages.

In the heavyweight GP, Tim Spriggs outlasted the competition. Tim kicked off the tourney beating Rudson Mateus, one of the favorites. Tim rode that momentum to a semifinal win versus Alliance’s Matheus Diniz, reaching the final, where he beat world champion Cláudio Calasans 4-2.

Em mais uma edição do seu inflamado grand prix, o Spyder Jiu-Jitsu Invitational mesclou atletas de elite com graduações diferentes (faixas-pretas, marrons e roxas) em busca do topo do pódio e um belo cheque de premiação. O card rolou nas primeiras horas deste sábado, dia 2 de março, em Seul, na Coreia do Sul.

As disputas foram divididas em duas categorias: até 76kg e até 100kg. Na divisão mais leve, Matheus Lutes, Daniel Sathler, Augusto Tanquinho, Lucas Rocha, Levi Jones-Leary, Mathias Luna, Osvaldo Queixinho e Sanghyeon Lee se enfrentaram na fase de grupos, enquanto na divisão mais pesada o evento contou com Tim Spriggs, Cláudio Calasans, Rudson Mateus, Matheus Diniz, Marcos Tinoco, Anderson Munis, Roberto Jimenez e Hyungcheul Kim.

Na divisão até 76kg, o destaque ficou para o implacável faixa-marrom Matheus Lutes, promessa da Alliance de Marcelo Garcia. Depois de finalizar na fase de grupos, Matheus superou o campeão mundial Augusto Tanquinho na semifinal para em seguida vencer o também faixa-preta Osvaldo “Queixinho” Moizinho na finalíssima, por 3 vantagens.

No GP de pesados, quem levou a melhor foi Tim Spriggs. Linha de frente da equipe Lloyd Irvin, Tim abriu o torneio deixando para trás Rudson Mateus, um dos favoritos do torneio. Embalado, Tim foi para semifinal e bateu o craque da Alliance Matheus Diniz, para chegar na final e vencer o campeão mundial Cláudio Calasans, por 4 a 2 nos pontos.

Spriggs attacks to bag the gold medal.

Ending last weekend in the American capital, the Washington Summer Open had multiple world champions fighting in the men’s brackets, but it was Tim Spriggs who stole the scene with a quick submission.

In the heavyweight division, Spriggs came across Grafton Skaggs. Without wasting any time, Spriggs pulled guard and swept. From the top, he bullfighted to pass; reached the side to score three points; passed to the opposite side with a knee on the belly, scoring two more; and right after that, sought the collar to choke. Unable to choke his opponent from the top, he pulled him to the classic bow-and-arrow position, from which the tightness proved too much for Skaggs.

Later the same day, Spriggs closed out the absolute with Mahamed Aly, making it a double-gold campaign. Below, check out the match and the complete results.

Encerra no último final de semana na capital dos EUA, o Washington Summer Open teve alguns campeões mundias nas suas chaves do masculino faixa-preta, mas foi Tim Spriggs que roubou a cena com uma finalização rápida.

Na disputa do peso pesado, Spriggs encarou Grafton Skaggs. Sem perder tempo, Spriggs puxou para a guarda e raspou. Por cima, assombrou Skaggs toureando para passar, chegou do lado pelos três pontos, passou para o lado oposto com o joelho na barriga para somar mais dois e, logo em seguida, buscou a gola para estrangular. Sem conseguir por cima, puxou o adversário para a clássica posição de arco e flecha, no qual o arrocho deixou inevitável os três tapinhas de Skaggs.

Mahamed Aly is declared absolute champion. IBJJF

For one day this weekend, the capital of the U.S. and the capital of BJJ were one and the same. That’s because Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Hyattsville welcomed the Washington, DC Open.

By the end, Team Lloyd Irvin had dominated the competition, with, among other great results, Mahamed Aly and Tim Spriggs closing out the absolute division for the team.

In the ultra-heavyweight division, Mahamed was the favorite, but BJJ fans were hoping to watch ADCC champion Gordon Ryan, who had signed up to compete in the gi for the first time at a high level, but didn’t show up. So Mahamed had only one fight, beating Grafton Skaggs (Big Brother).

In the open division, Mahamed beat Thomas John (Soul Fighters) and Alexandre Molinaro (Carlson Gracie) to meet his teammate Tim Spriggs in the final. And so Mahamed and Spriggs, the latter of which had claimed the super-heavy title earlier, closed it out for TLI.

Cláudia do Val (De La Riva) had no opponents in her weight division or in the absolute, so she took double gold and some free points for the women’s IBJJF rankings.

A capital dos Estados Unidos se tornou, por um dia, a capital do Jiu-Jitsu. Isso porque o Complexo Prince George, em Hyattsville, recebeu grandes nomes da arte suave para o Whashington DC Open da IBJJF.

Para agitar o público presente, os competitivos faixas-pretas a divisão de adultos mais uma vez deram um show. Como destaques, Mahamed Aly e Tim Spriggs anotaram a dobradinha campeã para a equipe Lloyd Irvin.

No pesadíssimo, o brasileiro Mahamed era o grande nome da chave, e os fãs de Jiu-Jitsu tinham a esperança de ver em ação o americano Gordon Ryan, campeão do ADCC e arisco competidor sem kimono, que apesar de estar inscrito para atuar pela primeira vez em alto nível com o kimono, não apareceu para lutar. Com isso, Mahamed fez apenas uma luta no peso, e superou Grafton Skaggs (Big Brother).

Já no absoluto, Mahamed bateu Thomas John (Soul Fighters) e Alexandre Molinaro (Carlson Gracie), para encontrar na final o companheiro de equipe Tim Spriggs, que havia conquistado o ouro no super pesado mais cedo, e assim a dupla casca-grossa fechou para o time Lloyd Irvin.

No feminino, sem adversárias tanto no peso quanto no absoluto, Cláudia do Val (De La Riva) ficou com o ouro duplo e os valiosos pontos para o ranking feminino faixa-preta.

Tim Spriggs venceu no D.C. Open.

O Washington D.C. Open da IBJJF rolou no último final de semana, e Tim Spriggs aproveitou o torneio para retomar o gosto pelas competições. Afastado para se preparar para o ADCC 2017, na Finlândia, o americano vestiu o kimono e mordeu ouro no peso pesado e no absoluto do torneio.

Antes de fechar o absoluto com o companheiro de equipe Mahamed Aly, Spriggs encarou uma das semifinais contra Christian Dellevag. Com muita pressão por cima, Spriggs passou a guarda e trabalhou seu espaço para atacar com sucesso na kimura e garantir a vaga na final.

Realizada em Solana Beach, na Califórnia, a primeira edição do torneio Five Grappling Super League teve os faixas-pretas Tim Spriggs e Mackenzie Dern como os grandes donos da festa.

Cada um ganhou seu torneio de oito atletas, e levou para casa a bolada de 10 mil verdinhas.

O torneio masculino foi sem kimono. Spriggs esbanjou no wrestling e no seu poderoso jogo por cima no Jiu-Jitsu para vencer Bruno Bastos (decisão do árbitro), Lucas Rocha (5 a 0) e, na final, a fera Yuri Simões, por 2 a 0. (2-0). O aluno de Lloyd Irvin ficou ainda com um belo cinturão, e aproveitou a deixa:

“Pessoal do ADCC, estou pronto para enfrentar os melhores do mundo sem kimono, como mostrei aqui. Mandem email, telefonem, mandem mensagens, que eu vou. Nos vemos em São Paulo!”, convidou-se o faixa-preta.

Mackenzie Dern finalizou suas três lutas no evento californiano.

Mackenzie Dern também venceu três pedreiras – e finalizou todas. A professora da Gracie Humaitá finalizou Tammi Musumeci nas costas, pegou a perna de Fabiana Borges e, na final, finalizou a surpreendente Karen Antunes com uma chave de pé fulminante, logo nos primeiros segundos de luta.

O mais pesado Garry Tonon venceu João Miyao na prorrogação, em duelo de tirar o fôlego.

Nas superlutas, também sem pano, Keenan Cornelius derrubou Otavio Sousa duas vezes para vencer por 4 a 0.

Já o americano Garry Tonon comprovou o talento sem pano ao superar João Miyao, por apenas 1 penalidade, após um 0 a 0 que perdurou por 16 minutos de batalha.
