For the first time in 15 years, the UFC will again set up shop in “The Land of Drizzle”. The next Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Brazil has now been confirmed to take place January 19, 2013, in São Paulo City’s Ibirapuera Gynasium.

Headlined by a middleweight main event pitting Vitor Belfort against Michael Bisping, the show will also feature noteworthy match-ups between Daniel Sarafian and CB Dollaway, and Thiago Tavares against undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Also on the card: Edson Barboza, Godofredo Pepey, Miltinho Vieira, Ronny Markes, Diego Nunes, Michael Kuiper, Thiago Bodão, Francisco Massaranduba and others.

The last time São Paulo was graced with the most widely recognized cage in MMA was in 1998. On the occasion, Portuguesa Gymnasium hosted the unforgettable clash of Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. Also fighting the card for the show, dubbed UFC 17.5, were Pedro Rizzo, Frank Shamrock, Tank Abbott, Ebenezer Braga, Pat Miletich, Jeremy Horn, Pete Williams and others.

Após 15 anos, o UFC vai aterrissar novamente na Terra da Garoa. A próxima edição do Ultimate em solo brasileiro está confirmada para o ginásio do Ibirapuera, em São Paulo, no dia 19 de janeiro de 2013.

Como grande atrativo, o evento principal será a luta entre os pesos médios Vitor Belfort e o inglês Michael Bisping. Nos outros combates, destaque para a estréia de Daniel Sarafian contra CB Dollaway e Thiago Tavares contra o russo invicto Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Também estão no card feras como Edson Barboza, Godofredo Pepey, Miltinho Vieira, Ronny Markes, Diego Nunes, Michael Kuiper, Thiago Bodão e Francisco Massaranduba, entre outros.

A última vez que São Paulo recebeu a gaiola mais famosa do MMA foi em 1998. Na ocasião, o ginásio da Portuguesa foi o palco do inesquecível duelo entre Belfort e Wanderlei Silva. Participaram ainda do show, nomeado UFC 17.5, os notórios Pedro Rizzo, Frank Shamrock, Tank Abbott, Ebenezer Braga, Pat Miletich, Jeremy Horn e Pete Williams, entre outros.

An MMA photographer since way back in the day when Tank Abbott was a worthy competitor, master of the lens Susumu Nagao was one of the stars to shine at the maiden installment of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, held last May 12.

Susumo flew over from Japan especially for the event and presented his exhibit to one of his biggest fans, also-photographer Esther Lin. The Japanese master reminded us that he started liking MMA in the days preceding the UFC, thanks to Shooto, and ever since, he has kept on top of the developments in the sport’s history.

Fotógrafo de MMA desde os tempos em que Tank Abbott era um competidor de respeito, o mestre das lentes Susumu Nagao foi uma das estrelas da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, evento pioneiro realizado em 12 de maio.

Susumu veio do Japão especialmente para o evento, e apresentou sua exposição para uma de suas maiores fãs, a também fotógrafa respeitada Esther Lin. O mestre japonês lembra que começou a gostar de MMA antes do UFC, graças ao Shooto, e a partir dali procurou acompanhar a história dos esporte.

A primeira edição da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo promete grandes atrações no dia 12 de maio, no Long Beach Convention Center em Long Beach, Califórnia. O evento organizado por Renzo Gracie vai reunir competidores consagrados num torneio especial da IBJJF, além de seminários gratuitos com feras do naipe de André Galvão, Bráulio Estima, Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Comprido e Roger Gracie.

Outra presença de alto quilate confirmada será a do lendário fotógrafo Susumu Nagao, considerado o “Mago das Lentes” e presente nos primeiros UFCs, Prides e ADCCs. Na Expo, Susumu vai mostrar fotos inéditas e clássicas, numa empolgante viagem aos primórdios do MMA e do Jiu-Jitsu.

Para competidores, a atração será o Spring International Open, torneio de primavera da IBJJF.

There are major attractions in store for those who attend the inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo this coming May 12 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. The Renzo Gracie-promoted event will gather established competitors for a special IBJJF tournament, as well as free seminars headed by the likes of André Galvão, Bráulio Estima, Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Comprido and Roger Gracie.

Another high-caliber presence confirmed to be there is legendary photographer Susumu Nagao, considered the “Wizard of the Lens,” who was a fixture at the early UFCs, Prides and ADCCs. At the Expo, Susumu will have an exhibit of never-before-seen and classic photos, in a thrilling trip back to the early days of MMA and Jiu-Jitsu.

For the competitors, the attraction will be the Spring International Open, the first IBJJF tournament of its kind.

David “Tank” Abbott é um lutador clássico, no mau sentido, famoso desde os primórdios do vale-tudo. Hoje em dia, com a explosão do UFC, o brigador parece com dificuldades de ficar somente no sofá assistindo às lutas.

Uma semana depois de ter surtado e trocado bordoadas com o ex-rival Scott Ferrozzo numa “luta” armada no meio de um churrasco, Tank entrou em ação mais uma vez no início de novembro, contra outro veterano de renome, Kimo Leopoldo.

A luta do beberrão com o gigante da cruz, notório rival de Royce Gracie, foi fechado em cima da hora e ocorreu em Hollywood, num ringue pelo menos. Mas o duelo nem teve final, e ninguém sabe quem venceu. Típico de mais um “clássico” de Tank Abbott.

David “Tank” Abbott has been famous for his classic brawler style ever since the early days of the UFC. These days, with the UFC boom, the fighter seems to be having a hard time limiting himself to just watching fights on TV.

A week after rematching Scott Ferrozzo in a “bout” held at a backyard barbecue, Tank saw action again early November against the veteran Kimo Leopoldo.

The fight between the barroom brawler and the notorious opponent of Royce Gracie’s notorious opponent was agreed to at the last minute and unfolded in Hollywood, in a ring at least. But the bout ended inconclusively; no one knows who won. Another Tank Abbott classic.

The showdown was initially set to take place at a strip bar in Dayton, Ohio, but was switched to a more “appropriate” location. Rather than a nudy bar, a backyard barbecue; rather than a pay-per-view broadcast, an amateur cameraman and video posted on Youtube. Pictured it? Check out the melee between the barroom brawlers:

O confronto estava programado inicialmente para uma boate de strip-tease em Dayton, Ohio, mas foi substiuído para um lugar mais “apropriado”. It sounds like a joke, but heavyweights David “Tank Abbott” and Scott Ferrozzo have a rematch scheduled for October 30, according to our collaborator Junior Samurai.

The veterans will square off as a remembrance of their classic 1996 showdown at UFC 11, and the setting for the encounter couldn’t be more fitting for the barfly Abbott, who hasn’t fought since 2009: a strip bar in Dayton, Ohio. The fight contract has been signed and, according to the bar’s owner, it will be broadcast live over the internet.
