Most Brazilians identify Rocky Balboa as being “the fighter who gets pounded on the whole fight but wins in the end.” That’s the most commercial image of the character played by Sylvester Stallone, derived from the sequels Rocky 2, 3 and, mainly, 4 – where Balboa overcomes Herculean Russian Ivan Drago right in the middle of the Soviet Union. When we think MMA, it’s none to rare that we classify Rodrigo Minotauro as the “Brazilian Rocky Balboa” because of his durability and incredible come-from-behind wins.

Not a lot of people remember how the character from the original Rocky film (the won that won the Oscar for best movie in 1977) wasn’t that almost superhuman American hero. Truth is, the Rocky from the first movie was a major underdog. With a spotty career, he is relegated to second tier fights and is considered run-of-the-mill by his neighbors, friends and even his own coach. When world champion Apollo Creed’s opponent gets injured during the lead-up to a title fight, without time enough left for another top contender to get ready, Creed decides to give a local fighter a chance to save the event. Rocky is chosen because of his nickname, “The Italian Stallion”, which Apollo feels carries commercial appeal.

Even though he’s aware he doesn’t stand a chance, Balboa accepts the challenge just to prove that everyone who underestimated him was wrong, that he could hold out and keep his feet till the final bell. When it’s all over, Rocky loses on points but is ballyhooed for his performance and backed by the woman he loves (“Adriaaaan!”).

During this week preceding UFC 152, Vitor Belfort’s the one most reminiscent of Rocky Balboa.

Unlike the character in the movies, Vitor never did hit rock bottom. However, because of his inconsistent performances, he’s never been seen as a hands-down favorite by fans, and is always  being underestimated. Vitor had a meteoric rise as his career began, winning a UFC title at just 19 years of age and earning the moniker “The Phenom.”

From there on out he oscillated between impressive wins against great fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Matt Lindland, Heath Herring and Rich Franklin, and apathetic losses to Randy Couture, Kazushi Sakuraba, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

Add to that the unfounded naysaying so common among fans, especially Brazilian ones: calling him “playboy”, saying he’s too hung up on appearing in the media, alleging that he wastes too much time on his famous wife. The one that was went to far was calling him “coward” because he broke his hand in the lead-up to his fight with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147, supposedly to duck the fight. What a crock.

Personally, I’ve never been a big Belfort fan, perhaps because I can’t identify with the excessive political correctness of his banter. But I feel it’s regretful to overlook a fighter as skilled as Vitor is.

Now Belfort has shut the mouths of his detractors by agreeing to face dreaded champion Jon Jones in the weight class above the one where he has been competing. When previous challenger Dan Henderson was struck with injury in the days preceding the big fight and no top contenders agreed to step in to fight the champ with less than a month to prepare, the “underdog” Belfort took up the challenge. Life imitating art.

Clearly, Belfort hasn’t much to lose in this encounter with Jon Jones. If he loses, he faced one of the most dominant champions of recent years at a weight class above his and did the owners of the UFC a favor. If he wins, he sends shockwaves around the world and makes history.

Honestly, the thing I want most out of this fight, win or lose, is for Vitor to make it a tough, impressive fight. Hit hard, get hit, and prove that he shouldn’t be underestimated. I want to see Vitor Belfort standing when the final bell sounds, with the crowd roaring and him screaming his beloved’s name.

More than ever, Belfort needs to model himself on the original Rocky Balboa. That character who only returned in the sixth film (“Rocky Balboa”, 2006), older, again underestimated and the underdog, and who taught his son the following lesson:

“Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

A maioria dos brasileiros identifica Rocky Balboa como “o lutador que apanha a luta inteira e, no final, ganha do adversário”. Essa é a imagem mais comercial do personagem de Sylvester Stallone, derivada das sequências Rocky 2, 3 e, principalmente, 4 – na qual Balboa derrota o gigante russo Drago em plena União Soviética. Quando pensamos em MMA, não é raro classificarmos Rodrigo Minotauro como o “Rocky Balboa brasileiro” por sua resistência e reviravoltas inacreditáveis.

Poucos lembram que o personagem original do filme “Rocky, um lutador” (ganhador do Oscar de melhor filme de 1977), não era esse herói americano quase sobre-humano. Na verdade, o Rocky do primeiro filme era um grande azarão. Com uma carreira irregular, ele aparece relegado a lutas de segunda categoria, considerado sem importância por vizinhos, pelos amigos e pelo próprio técnico. Quando o adversário do campeão mundial Apollo Creed se machuca às vésperas da disputa do cinturão, sem tempo suficiente para que outro “top contender” se prepare para a luta, Creed resolve dar chance a um lutador local para salvar o evento. Rocky é o escolhido por causa de seu apelido “Garanhão Italiano” (Italian Stallion), que Apolo considera comercialmente interessante.

Balboa aceita o desafio, mesmo sabendo que tem poucas chances, somente para provar que todos aqueles que o subestimavam estavam errados. Que ele poderia resistir e estar de pé quando o gongo soasse. Ao final, Rocky perde por pontos, mas é aclamado por seu desempenho e amparado pela mulher que amava (“Adriaaaaan!”).

Na semana do UFC 152, Vitor Belfort é quem lembra mais esse Rocky Balboa.

Diferente do personagem de cinema, Vitor nunca chegou ao fundo do poço. Porém, pela irregularidade de seus desempenhos, jamais foi uma unanimidade entre os fãs do esporte, sendo sempre subestimado. Vitor teve um início de carreira meteórico, conquistando um título do UFC com apenas 19 anos e recebendo o apelido de “O Fenômeno”.

A partir daí passou a alternar vitórias impressionantes contra grande lutadores como Wanderlei Silva, Matt Lindland, Heath Herring e Rich Franklin com derrotas apáticas contra Randy Couture, Kazushi Sakuraba, Tito Ortiz e Chuck Lidell.

Some-se a isso a “cornetagem” infundada, tão comum aos fãs e ainda mais aos brasileiros: taxavam-no de “playboy”,  diziam que se concentrava demais em aparecer na mídia, alegavam que ele perdia muito tempo com a esposa famosa. O cúmulo foi chamá-lo de “amarelão” porque quebrou a mão às vésperas da sua luta contra Wanderlei Silva no UFC 147, supostamente para evitar  o confronto. Quanta bobagem.

Pessoalmente, nunca fui um grande fã do Belfort, talvez por não me identificar com seu discurso politicamente correto demais. Mas acho lamentável desprezar um lutador com a habilidade do Vitor.

Agora Belfort cala a boca de seus detratores ao aceitar enfrentar o temido campeão Jon Jones na categoria de peso acima da que vinha disputando. Quando o desafiante Dan Henderson se machucou às vésperas da disputa contra Jones e nenhum “top contender” aceitou enfrentar o campeão, com menos de um mês de preparação, o “azarão” Belfort foi chamado para o confronto. A vida imita a arte.

É lógico que Belfort tem pouco a perder com essa disputa contra Jon Jones. Se for derrotado, enfrentou um dos campeões mais dominantes dos últimos tempos, em um peso acima do seu, e fez um favor aos donos do UFC. Se ganhar, chocará o mundo e fará história.

Sinceramente, o que mais torço nessa luta é para que, ganhando ou perdendo, Vitor faça uma luta dura e impressionante. Bata forte, apanhe e prove que não deve ser subestimado. Quero ver Vitor Belfort em pé ao soar do gongo, aplaudido, gritando o nome de sua amada.

Mais do que nunca, Belfort deve se espelhar no Rocky Balboa original. Este personagem que só voltou no sexto filme (“Rocky Balboa”, 2006), mais velho, novamente subestimado e azarão, e que ensinou ao seu filho:

“Ninguém baterá tão forte quanto a vida. Mas não se trata de quão forte você bate. Trata-se do quanto você aguenta apanhar e continuar seguindo em frente. É assim que a vitória é conquistada.”

“According to Stallone, fighters have mean faces and would be perfect as red berets! I just watched it; it’s great,” he said over twitter, breaking his down the experience as an actor.

“My brother and I were in three scenes in the movie. I call the general at the start, speaking in perfect Spanish! Hehehe! The red berets were all fighters,” recounted the fighter, then heaping praise on Randy Couture.

“Couture performed really well in the film. He has charisma and a future as an actor. Good world, Captain America!”

Watch, in the video below, Minotauro getting back to his roots. In a Jiu-Jitsu training session with Eduardo Telles, Minotauro trains and comments on the importance of the gi in MMA.

“The gi is the foundation for everything. Your game gets tighter, whether in defense or attack,” he professes.

“Segundo Stallone, os lutadores têm a cara de mal e seriam perfeitos para os boinas vermelhas! Acabei de ver, muito bom”, comenta no seu Twitter, onde analisa a experiência como ator.   

“Eu e meu irmão gravamos três cenas no filme. Eu chamo o general no começo, falando um espanhol fino! Hehe! Os boinas vermelhas eram todos lutadores”, comenta o lutador, para depois elogiar Randy Couture. 

“Couture atuou muito bem no filme. Ele tem carisma e futuro como ator. Bom trabalho Capitão América!”

In the trailer, Stallone gets a rear-naked choke slapped on him and lashes nimbly lashes back with a crucifix to armbar, while commenting on the fights from his career.

No trailer lançado hoje na internet, Sylvester Stallone apresenta a cena gravada no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em que a turma do MMA participa do filme “Os mercenários”, que chega aos cinemas americanos em agosto.

Stallone explica que a princípio não gostou dos atores escalados para o papel de soldados, até que lembrou que o Rio era celeiro de lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu e MMA, muito mais convincentes como guerreiros.
