A Soul Fighters athlete made black-belt by the duo of Leandro “Tatu” Escobar and Muzio de Angelis, Ruan Oliveira needs no introduction. Owner of a powerful guard and an explosive game, he was a standout in the most recent edition of Copa Podio, held Feb. 23 in Rio de Janeiro.

Ruan fought in that event’s preliminary card, a sudden-death tourney featuring eight athletes vying for a spot in May’s middleweight GP. Three extra-tough bouts stood between Ruan and the chance to fight in the spotlight. He hung in there, beating his first two opponents before outplaying Brenno Novaes.

Graciemag talked to Ruan afterwards to discuss details of his preparation for six-minute matches, and more. Read on for the interview.

GRACIEMAG.com: What’s your assessment of your performance?

RUAN OLIVEIRA: We did it, thank God. I had a good performance; I was well prepared and feeling well mentally. I fought really safe and saving myself, because I got injured the previous week. But it all worked out!

Did you feel any differences in performance fighting in stretches of six minutes? Which opponent posed more problems in this format?

It’s always hard fighting for six minutes — you can’t make mistakes. We put together the correct strategy and tactics in each fight. All my opponents were very strong and prepared. I managed to impose my game and pace during every fight, but the guy who made it hard was Leon Brito. He was very strong and with a very good base, killing all my grips, and he wouldn’t let me adjust myself.

Do you think you are arriving in the GP with greater momentum, having made it through this trial by fire before the official competition?

I’m flying to the U.S. to do a camp for the Pan, then I carry on with my training routine already with a focus on the Brazilian Nationals and, soon after that, Copa Podio. I will certainly have my physical preparation in a very sharp state and I’ll be very well technically, being very close to my main goal, which is the Worlds. I believe I’m on an upward curve and we’ll do a great job. It’s a promising year!

Tommy Langaker, winner of the lightweight GP, is also confirmed. How do you view a possible fight with him?

I believe we will meet in other events. I like studying my opponents and practicing each one’s strong positions. At the gym, I have a variety of people, and with many different games; I’m always studying and practicing same positions. The best strategy so far is not to go into his guard, but I will be well prepared for this and other matches.

How do you conciliate your training for competition with teaching at Minos Funcional Fight?

My training takes place in the morning and afternoon. I always do two to three training sessions a day, including physical preparation.

It’s a pleasure to teach, especially at Minos! I learn a lot from my students; I have to answer all the questions and show/think of the best path for each of them, to train while correcting errors. It makes me evolve as a teacher and develop my jiu-jitsu in another way.
The post Exclusive interview: Ruan Oliveira on how he secured a spot in Copa Podio’s middleweight GP first appeared on Graciemag.

RUAN OLIVEIRA: Conseguimos, graças a Deus. Tive uma boa atuação, estava preparado e me sentindo bem mentalmente. Lutei bem seguro e me resguardando, pois me lesionei na semana anterior do evento.

Qual seria a estratégia pra bater o norueguês?

The post Entrevista exclusiva: Ruan Oliveira comenta como roubou a cena na Copa Podio de Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

With the event in mind, today Graciemag brings you an option to defend against and take advantage of a single-leg attack.

The instructor is Pedro Rocha, a wrestling champion from Soul Fighters. Experienced in no-gi positions, Pedro recruited his buddy Domenico Novello to show a counter-attack against the takedown. First, Pedro indicates where the grips must be made in this no-gi scenario, to then stress the advance of the leg that isn’t under attack in order to improve the spin that ends with him on top.

The post Leandro Tatu comenta sucesso da Soul Fighters no Brasileiro de Equipes 2018 first appeared on Graciemag.

Featuring contests from the purple to the black belt across the adults’ and masters’ age groups, the event was led by two teams. In the adults’ brown/black belt lightweight division, Soul Fighters leader Leandro “Tatu” Escobar fought and guided his squad to the title, besting Almeida Jiu-Jitsu in the final. Tatu’s team was made up of Daniel Junior, Eduardo Carvalho and Rodrigo Martins, as well as BTT’s Alexandre Vieira, and Márcio Rodrigues’s Yago and Ygor Rodrigues.

In the adults’ heavyweight division, GFTeam bagged the gold, extending its winning streak. In the final, they were faced with the favorites, the Rodrigo Cavaca-led Zenith JJ squad with the reinforcements of Fellipe Andrew and Diego Borges. To secure the gold, the group made up of Guilherme Cordiviola, Marcos Junior, Antonio Assef, Andre Luis Santos, André Daniel Santos, Pedro Pimenta and Wilson Sousa brought the score to 3 wins to nil — an insurmountable advantage.

In the master 1 age group, GFTeam again took the top spot. Arthur Gogó (GFTeam Cascadura), Alberto Ramos (GFTeam Cachambi), Victor Bomfim, Marcus “Morcego” Santos, Nilton Junior and Thiago da Silva joined forces to defeat the Gracie Barra team in the final.

No master 1, a equipe GFTeam voltou a figurar no topo do pódio.

João Gabriel Rocha (Soul Fighters) won the ultra-heavyweight title March 19 in Irvine, Calif. at the Pan. The 25-year-old reared by Leandro “Tatu” Escobar and Rafael Formiga dealt submissions left and right, and choked out Gustavo Dias in the final. He also came in second in the open division, behind only Leandro Lo.

That’s quite the turn of events for Rocha, who had to ditch the gi in 2014 while he fought a bout with cancer. In this interview with Graciemag following the Pan, he talked about how his competitive mindset helped him through that rough patch.

GRACIEMAG: How did your 20 years of competition help you beat your cancer?

JOÃO GABRIEL ROCHA: It was complicated. When I had surgery to remove the tumor, I did not even know what I had. And then it was that scare when I found out. Being unable to train, without competing, and even reading Graciemag and seeing I wasn’t in it, especially the World Championship issue, were complicated moments. But nothing was worse than seeing my parents devastated, in really bad shape, ditching everything to be by my side. I saw them both suffer and then I’d pretend I wasn’t feeling the pain and discomfort, so they wouldn’t get worse. I think this is a common aspect of BJJ — being able to keep your poker face and not telegraph to your opponent that you are straining. Then the worst part by far were the two months of chemo; it was three liters of chemo injected into my veins daily, and I would feel my entire body burn inside. I took on each cycle, each session, like a fight for a gold medal, and the suffering like it was those ten final seconds of the fight, where I needed to withstand everything, give it another big, painful try to win. I was sure I would beat the disease. Never did the idea of death shake me; in my mind all there was were upcoming BJJ plans — how and when I would resume training, what championship I was going to compete in next. I kept a very healthy mind, with the help of jiu-jitsu.

What about the recovery?

It was very quick. My doctor predicted I was going to take six months to feel in shape again. But in one month my hair grew back, I lost some 16 pounds and went back to training. Everything has a good side; the feeling of being able to breathe normally, to feel alive again is inexplicable. I started greatly cherishing the little things I didn’t even notice existed around me before. In my mind there had been nothing but training and becoming world champion. Now I realize that life is much more than that. I grew a lot, I feel.

What did you learn about BJJ as a result of that trial?

I had never known what a life without BJJ was like; after all, I started training at two years of age. I don’t remember anything from my first fights, given the fact that I was four. So I have attained this knowledge now, of going one year without being able to train. I learned how to see the suffering of the competitors during that marathon; to realize how there are teachers who have never won a world championship but who help hundreds of kids; that there are supporters who suffer, who curse — that is, that there is a world of people who feel intense feelings around BJJ. Prior to this, I only paid attention to my opponents. Another aspect that helped me is that, thanks to this thing, I was able to practice positions without having a championship on the horizon. So I tested new positions, modern guards, game types that make an opponent’s life harder. I do not intend to use any of these techniques; I want to continue with my game of seeking to take down, mount and finish, without thinking about points, but I managed to understand better the mechanics of some new positions, and now I have more possibilities to disarm my opponents. After all, knowing how to defend is knowing how to disarm one’s rivals.

To give you a taste of the type of pressure we’re talking about, we asked João for a private session focusing on his tightest pass from the event. He explained the most important details to help you reach the side safely, which you can see in the following video. Enjoy.
