Caught by surprise just 42 seconds into his encounter with Siyar Bahadurzada, Paulo Thiago hit the ground unconscious at UFC on Fuel TV last Saturday in Stockholm. The officer on Brazil’s elite police force BOPE took a hook to the tip of the chin and crashed to the canvas, resulting in a long hospital stay thereafter. When such potent blows like this occur, the UFC requires that fighters go through a complete battery of exams to be sure no serious injury was incurred.

His teacher, Ataide Junior, discussed his preparations and the lessons that come with such misfortune.

“BAD LUCK”

“There’s no way to analyze a fight like this. Paulo was really well trained and physically well prepared. I’m positive he was in his best shape. He had the bad luck of the punch landing, and right at the beginning of the fight. That, everyone saw. The important thing is that he’s fine. We did all the exams the UFC asked for, and thank God nothing came back. Now we’re going to wait on the promotion’s decision as to how long he’ll be out of action. We’re already anxious about getting him his next fight. I don’t mean to discredit his opponent, but there was no fight,” said the coach and Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

The Afghan fighter himself was surprised by the outcome. “I really wanted to win this fight, but it never occurred to me it would go like that,” said Siyar.

Now Paulo Thiago will fulfill some other commitments in Europe before returning home to the Brazilian capital of Brasilia to pick up training again and get ready for his next obligations. The UFC touched down in Sweden for the first time this Saturday. To many, the most striking part of the evening in Stockholm was the knockouts: Brian Stann’s on Alessio Sakara, Siyar Bahadurzada’s on Paulo Thiago… —the Brazilian elite police trooper kissing the canvas was worth a 50,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus for “The Great” of Afghanistan.

However, UFC on Fuel also drew wows for the number of finishes, six of them out of a total 12 fights. There were five chokes—four rear-nakeds and one guillotine—and an armbar that earned best-of-the-night honors, performed by John Maguire on DaMarques Johnson. Now the “Fight of the Night” bonus went to the Brad Pickett-Damacio Page matchup, won by the former via rear-naked choke.

In the event headliner, Alexander Gustafsson dominated Thiago Silva for three rounds and took the unanimous nod from the judges. The Brazilian is coming off three back-to-back poor results, two losses and one no contest, while local boy Gustafsson hasn’t lost in five fights.

O UFC chegou à Suécia pela primeira vez neste sábado. Para muitos, a noite em Estocolmo ficou caracterizada pelos nocautes, o de Brian Stann contra Alessio Sakara e o de Siyar Bahadurzada sobre Paulo Thiago, que fez o caveira do Bope beijar a lona em 42 segundos e valeu o prêmio de melhor da noite, o equivalente a 50 mil dólares a mais na conta.

No entanto, o UFC on Fuel também impressionou pelas finalizações, ao todo seis nos 12 combates. Foram cinco estrangulamentos – quatro de mata-leão e um de guilhotina – e um armlock, justamente a melhor finalização, executada por John Maguire sobre DaMarques. Já a melhor luta contou com o mata-leão de Brad Pickett em Damacio Page.

No confronto principal, Alexander Gustafsson dominou e venceu Thiago Silva por decisão unânime. O brasileiro vem de três resultados ruins, duas derrotas e um no contest, enquanto o sueco Gustafsson não perde há cinco desafios.

Besides confirming José Aldo (featherweight champion), Vitor Belfort (middleweight), Thiago Tavares and Edson Barboza (lightweight), the Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed Brazil’s Erick Silva will be on the card for UFC 142, in Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. The 27-year-old fighter, coming off a first-round knockout of compatriot Luis Beição at the promotion’s last show in Rio, will take on Afghanistan’s Siyar Bahadurzada, also 27, a Shooto champion making his UFC debut.

UFC 142 will mark the first time the most popular channel in Brazil, Rede Globo, broadcasts a UFC event held in Brazil. Tickets are expected to go on sale in December.

“I was overjoyed by the news I’ll get to fight here in Rio again, this time on the main card. I’m going to intensify my training from here on out. I have nine weeks till the event and I need this time if I want to be ready,” said the welterweight Silva (13-1).

“I don’t know much about [Siyar Bahadurzada]. Wallid [his manager] just told me the news today. I’ve seen some of his fights but wasn’t looking at him as an opponent. Now I’ll watch everything and put together a strategy,” said Erick in closing.

Além das confirmações de José Aldo (campeão dos penas), Vitor Belfort (peso médio), Thiago Tavares e Edson Barboza (leves), o Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmou nesta segunda-feira a participação do capixaba Erick Silva no UFC 142, que será realizado na HSBC Arena, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. O lutador de 27 anos, que vem de um nocaute no primeiro round contra o também brasileiro Luis Beição no Rio, vai encarar desta vez o afegão Siyar Bahadurzada, também 27 anos, campeão do Shooto e que faz sua estreia no evento.

O UFC 142 marca a primeira transmissão da Rede Globo de um evento do Ultimate Fighting Championship realizado no Brasil. A venda de ingressos para o evento está prevista para dezembro.

“Fiquei muito feliz com a notícia de que vou lutar novamente aqui no Rio, agora no card principal. A partir de agora vou intensificar meus treinos. Tenho nove semanas até o evento e esse é o tempo que preciso para me preparar”, disse o meio-médio Erick (13-1).

“Não sei muito sobre ele (Siyar Bahadurzada) não. O Wallid (seu empresário) me deu a notícia hoje. Já vi umas duas lutas dele, mas não o observei como meu adversário. Agora, vou assistir tudo e montar uma estratégia em cima”, encerrou Erick.

The first stage of the Ultimate Glory welterweight GP kicked off this Saturday in Amsterdam, Holland.

In one of the most heavily-anticipated fights of the night, former UFC fighter Roan “Jucão” Carneiro beat current Shooto champion Luis Beição to remain in the race. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt’s win came by way of unanimous decision.

In the other fights on the night, Siyar Bahadurzada, another Shooto champion, added another knockout win to his record while still in the first round.

Aconteceu neste sábado, em Amsterdã, na Holanda, a primeira fase do GP 77kg do Ultimate Glory.

Num dos combates mais aguardados, o ex-lutador do UFC Roan Carneiro “Jucão” bateu o atual campeão do Shooto Luis Beição e segue vivo na disputa. A vitória do faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu foi por decisão unânime.

Nas outras lutas da noite, se saiu bem Siyar Bahadurzada, que também é campeão do Shooto. O lutador derrotou Derrick Noble por nocaute, ainda no primeiro round.

On a cold and rainy Rio de Janeiro evening, only action-packed MMA bouts could heat things up. And that’s just what Shooto Brazil 17 provided this Friday. Two world title belts and a South American one jst added importance to the occasion, bringing promoter André Pederneiras to move the event to the traditional Hebraica club in the Laranjeiras neighborhood of the city. The action kicked off at nine and was broadcast live on Brazil’s fights-only Combat channel.

In the main event, Afghani fighter living in Holland Siyar Bahadurzada paid the partisan crowd no heed, knocking out Carlos Índio, who carried an eight-fight win streak into the bout, in just 38 seconds, thus keeping his Shooto World middleweight title.

The other world title fight, this one in the lightweight division, saw two Brazilians facing off. For the third time, Luiz Beição beat Igor Chatubinha to take the belt. It wasn’t easy, though, with Beição avoiding his opponent’s attacks and getting the better of the standup action to tilt the unanimous decision in his favor.

For the Shooto South America featherweight title, Johnny Eduardo extended his win streak to ten and snatched the strap. But his task wasn’t easy either, as Paulo Guerreiro lived up to his name (“Guerreiro” means warrior in Portuguese), hanging on the three rounds but losing the unanimous decision.

Another highly-anticipated fight saw two kickboxing beasts lock horns, with Guto Inocente against Vitor Miranda. The two had already faced off under muay thai rules at Shooto at the same Hebraica club. This time, though, it was Guto who triumphed, but under MMA rules. The win came by way of technical knockout after the younger fighter mounted Miranda and rained down blows.

In other bouts, Giovanni Diniz defeated Cristian Nogueira by technical knockout; Hacran Dias knocked out Holland’s Cesário Di Domenico; and Rodolfo Marques beat Walter Junior by decision. There was some controversy surrounding Junior Killer’s submission win over Hernani Perpetuo. Hernani didn’t tap to the fight-ending straight armbar, but referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight, alleging Hernani let out a scream, which, after seeing the replay on TV, seemed to be the right decision.

Numa noite fria e de chuva no Rio de Janeiro, só mesmo boas disputas de MMA para esquentar. E foi o que aconteceu na 17ª edição do Shooto Brasil, nesta sexta-feira. Duas disputas de cinturão mundial e uma pelo título sul-americano aumentavam a importância da edição, o que fez o organizador André Pederneiras levar o evento para o tradicional ginásio do Clube Hebraica, em Laranjeiras. Aproximadamente às 21h iniciaram-se as disputas, com transmissão ao vivo do canal Combate.

Na principal luta da noite, o afegão radicado na Holanda Siyar Bahadurzada não ligou para a torcida contra. Em apenas 38s, nocauteou a pedreira Carlos Índio, que vinha numa série de oito vitórias. Com o resultado, Siyar manteve o cinturão mundial peso médio do Shooto.

Outra luta que valia título mundial, o de meio-médios, dessa vez o combate foi entre dois brasileiros. Pela terceira vez, Luiz Beição bateu Igor Chatubinha para garantir o cinturão. Mas não foi fácil. Beição evitou as investidas do adversário e conectou bons golpes para garantir a decisão unânime a seu favor.

Pelo título sul-americano no peso pena, Johnny Eduardo estendeu a sequência para dez triunfos seguidos e ainda afivelou o cinturão. E também não teve vida fácil contra Paulo Guerreiro, que é guerreiro mesmo. O triunfo foi por decisão unânime.

Outra luta muito aguardada era entre a fera do kickboxing Guto Inocente e Vitor Miranda. Os dois já haviam se enfrentado nas regras do muay thai, numa luta casada no próprio Shooto. No mesmo ginásio da Hebraica, Guto devolveu o revés, agora num combate de MMA. Depois de montar em Vitor e socar, Guto conseguiu o nocaute técnico na segunda parcial.

Em outras lutas, Giovanni Diniz derrotou Cristian Nogueira por nocaute técnico; Hacran Dias nocauteou o holandês Cesário Di Dominico’s; e Rodolfo Marques bateu Walter Junior por decisão. Houve polêmica na luta em que Junior Killer finalizou Hernani Perpetuo. Hernani não bateu no armlock que esticou seu braço, mas o árbitro Mario Yamasaki separou a luta, alegou que Hernani gritara, o que, no replay pela TV, pareceu justo.
