Thiago Alves completa, em março, três anos sem atuar pelo Ultimate. Mas a espera acabou. Logo após completar mais de mil dias sem atuar nos cages, o Pitbull volta ao UFC contra Seth Baczynski.

O afastamento, em decorrência de uma série de lesões, já estava com os dias contados, pois o próprio atleta de 30 anos já havia revelado, no ano passado, que estava plenamente recuperado e que mirava sua volta para o início de 2014.

Thiago (19v, 9d) luta no UFC desde 2005, sendo um dos mais antigos, e já venceu grandes nomes da divisão de meio-médios, como Matt Hughes e Josh Koscheck. Porém, em suas últimas seis lutas, venceu apenas duas. O brasileiro vem de revés para Martin Kampmann, quando foi finalizado na luta principal.

Baczynski (19v, 10d) tem dez vitórias anotadas or finalização, a maioria no pescoço. Em suas três últimas lutas no UFC, perdeu duas e venceu sua mais recente, contra Neil Magny.

This Friday, in Queensland, Australia, half the fights on the card for UFC on FX 6 ended before regulation time was up. A bona fide knockout fest, the standouts of which were Ross Pearson’s win over George Sotiropoulos and Hector Lombard’s drubbing of Rousimar Toquinho.

O UFC on FX 6 rolou nessa sexta-feira, em Queensland, na Austrália, e metade dos duelos terminaram antes do tempo previsto. Um verdadeiro show de nocautes, com destaque para a vitória de Ross Pearson sobre George Sotiropoulos e para o cubano Hector Lombard, que acertou bons golpes em Rousimar Toquinho e despachou o brasileiro ainda no primeiro assalto.

Nesta sexta, o octagon aporta em Queensland, na Austrália e o ginásio de Gold Coast Convention será o palco do UFC on FX 6. Os combates serão transmitidos pelo Canal Combate e começam às 21h, horário do Brasil. O GRACIEMAG.com lista as cinco lutas que devem levantar você, que é fã de Jiu-Jitsu.

1. Norman Parker vs Colin Fletcher

Esse combate será a final do peso leve do “TUF Smashes”. O americano Norman “Stormin” Parker (16v, 2d) tem experiência no MMA e soube usar essa vantagem muito bem dentro da casa. Norman treina na equipe de Jiu-Jitsu de Robert Drysdale, portanto sabe muito bem usar as quedas e aplicar a finalização. Já o compatriota Colin “Freak Show” Fletcher (8v, 1d) tem uma envergadura maior, sabe muito bem defender as quedas e deve querer manter a luta em pé para surpreender o rival.

2. Hector Lombard vs Rousimar Palhares

Hector “Lightning” Lombard chegou cheio de moral ao Ultimate, mas acabou decepcionando na sua estreia contra Tim Boetsch, no UFC 149, em julho, em luta morna. Agora o judoca cubano tem outra chance grande de mostrar seu valor. Já o mineirinho Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares precisa voltar a vencer e provar que é um dos tops da categoria. Será que Toquinho leva mais um pé para casa ou Hector derruba?

This Friday, the octagon touches down in the Gold Coast Convention Center in Queensland, Austrialia, where UFC on FX 6 will unfold. GRACIEMAG.com put together a list of the five fights you won’t want to miss on the card, if you’re a Jiu-Jitsu fan.

1. Norman Parker vs. Colin Fletcher

This fight marks the final chapter of the lightweight division from the TUF Smashes reality show. US national Norman “Stormin” Parker (16w, 2l) has MMA experience and knew how to use it to his advantage in the house. Norman trains at Roberto Drysdale’s Jiu-Jitsu team, so he’s plenty well versed with takedowns and submissions. Now, his countryman Colin “Freak Show” Fletcher (8w, 1l) has greater reach, good takedown defense and should look to keep the fight standing.

2. Hector Lombard vs. Rousimar Palhares

Hector “Lightning” Lombard was highly touted when he first joined the UFC fray, but ended up disappointing on his promotional debut against Tim Boetsch at UFC 149. Now the Cuban judoka has another chance to show his potential. Now, Brazil’s Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares needs to rediscover his winning ways to remain relevant in the division. Might Toquinho manage to take Hector’s foot home with him?

3. Chad Mendes vs. Yaotzin Meza

Still craving José Aldo’s belt, Chad Mendes is coming off a win over Cody McKenzie at UFC 148 last June and was set to face up-and-coming Nova União star Hacran Dias, who had to pull out due to injury. Could Dias’s replacement, Yaotzin Meza, be easy prey, or will he give Chad more than he can chew?

4. George Sotiropoulos vs. Ross Pearson

Things haven’t been going too well for submission whiz Sotiropoulos, who now has to contend with the strike-savvy Ross Pearson in trying to right his ship. Could his Jiu-Jitsu serve him well at home?

5. Robert Whittaker vs. Brad Scott

At just 21 years of age, Robert Whitaker (9w, 2l) is heading into the middleweight final of the TUF Smashes reality show. With solid Thai boxing, he will be looking for the knockdown on Australia’s Brad Scott (8w, 1l), who is riding six back-to-back wins and ran roughshod through all his opponents on the show in making it to the final. Scott, the masterful wrestler, should be looking for the takedown and ground and pound.

You can put UFC on FX 6’s Mike Pierce any place on the planet to fight, and it won’t change his approach.

The welterweight will fly all the way to the other side of the world in Australia to fight Seth Baczynski, but it doesn’t matter how far he has to travel, he said. Fighting is fighting, no matter where it happens.

“It doesn’t really make a difference to me,” Pierce said in response to fighting far away from home in the land down under. “At the end of the day, he and I are both stepping into an octagon and we have to perform and beat the crap out of each other.”

Despite the lengthy travel, Pierce is going into the fight with the same idea that he’s had in all his previous contests: getting the hand raised. After all, both he and his opponent will deal with the same extreme time change.

Both of them have to acclimate, Pierce explained.

“He’s flying from Arizona, I’m flying from Oregon, so the time change and acclimating to all that is relatively the same,” he said.

In terms of MMA, Australia will be the first country Pierce has fought in as a professional outside of the United States. But regardless of the lack pro fights outside of his home country, the 170-pounder has made his rounds hopping the globe.

Most recently and over the last year, Pierce has done tours with the UFC, visiting troops in several places in the Middle East. He landed in places like Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, and said It was a great experience.

“It was a lot of fun,” Pierce said about his visits with American soldiers. “I got to meet a lot of cool people.”

The trip to the American military bases was the first time Pierce made international travel since high school. He was part of a cultural exchange wrestling team that went to Budapest, Hungary, and while there they worked with the Swedish and Hungarian world teams.

“It was an interesting time,” he said, reflecting on his teenage years in a foreign country. “It was very cool for them because they were used to listening to the way the English talk and how they pronounce things. Americans obviously sound a lot different.”

Despite the language barrier, Pierce took the experience as one where he learned a great deal of things and got better as a wrestler. It’s translated well into MMA, he said, and helped humble him for the hard roads in the UFC.

“Once you get to that point where you think you know everything, someone’s going to catch you and humble you really quickly,” he said. “I still try to [remember] that philosophy … and stay humble.”

Bráulio Estima had a sterling maiden outing in MMA last month, and following some well-deserved off time surfing, his mind is already back on training—and his eyes on UFC 152.

“It’s hugely satisfying to train with Vitor. I’m a fan of his from way back, so I’m somewhat partial,” said Carcará, another elite athlete helping Belfort prepare for his attempt to take the light heavyweight title from the fearsome Jon Jones, during a chat with GRACIEMAG.com. “Vitor’s a born professional. He’s dedicated and has a wealth of knowledge. Having started so early, he’s got some crazy octagon experience. I’ve learned a lot from him. Training here at Blackzilians is really professional, with lots of tactics, specific training on attacks and blocking takedowns and attacks,” added the Jiu-Jitsu professor from Gracie Barra Birmingham.

As for training, the black belt feels the help of one of Jones’s former friends will prove essential.

“Vitor has been practicing a bit of everything. Rashad Evans is backing Vitor up big time. There’s no one better than him to teach Vitor what he needs to know. Predicting the outcome of a fight like this one is difficult, but there is one thing I can say: Vitor’s doing awesome in striking, ground and pound and Jiu-Jitsu. A fight’s a fight, and nobody’s invincible. The way I see it, the first one to slip up will pay dearly,” he said in closing.

Bráulio Estima obteve uma bela vitória em sua estreia no MMA, no mês passado, e após merecidas férias surfando, ele já está com a mente de volta aos treinos – e de olho no UFC 152.

“Treinar com o Vitor é uma satisfação enorme. Sou fã dele de longa data, então sou suspeito pra falar”, diz o Carcará, mais um casca-grossa que está ajudando Belfort na luta pelo cinturão dos meio-pesados, hoje em posse do monstro Jon Jones. “Vitor é um profissional nato. Dedicado e sabe muito. Como começou cedo, tem uma experiência no octógono sinistra. Aprendi muito com ele, os treinos aqui na Blackzilians são bem profissionais com muita tática, treino específico de golpes e bloqueio de quedas e golpes”, completou o professor da Gracie Barra Birmingham, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

Quanto aos treinos, o faixa-preta conta que o auxílio de um ex-amigo de Jones é essencial.

“Vitor tem treinado de tudo um pouco. O Rashad Evans está dando uma grande força para o Vitor. Ninguém melhor que ele para passar tudo o que o Vitor precisa. Prever o desfecho de uma luta como esta é difícil. Mas uma coisa posso adiantar: Vitor está muito bem na trocação, no ground and pound e no Jiu-Jitsu. Luta é luta, e ninguém é invencível. Na minha análise, o primeiro que errar vai pagar mais caro”, encerrou.

While no one else accepted a shot at Jon Jones (except Chael Sonnen, of course), Vitor Belfort didn’t even blink and agreed to face the UFC light heavyweight champion right away. The two will square off on the coming 22nd in the main event of UFC 153, and the promotion has already released the promo video for the show.

The Brazilian has made it clear he’s confident going into the fight: “I’m going to knock him out. He’d better be ready for me. I’m going there to fight. I’m going there to win. It’ll be lion against lion. I’m going to win the fight, dictate the pace. The plan is to beat him,” he says.

On the coming 8th of June in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Caio Magalhães will finally be making his UFC debut against also-first-timer Buddy Roberts, 29.

While going through his final preparations at team Nova União headquarters in Rio, the fighter revealed his strategy for winning, and possibly finishing, to GRACIEMAG.com.

“First I’m going to get a feel for the fight. He knows what he’s doing on his feet but always goes to the ground. I’m going to play my game, stand and trade looking for the knockout, but if it goes to my turf I’ll impose my Jiu-Jitsu,” said the native of the Brazilian state of Ceará.

Undefeated in his MMA career, Caio Magalhães was first hired by the UFC to fight at light heavyweight at the UFC Rio show. When his match-up with Fabio Maldonado fell through, he had enough time to shed some weight and join the fray as a middleweight.

“Now it’s the final stretch. I’m training a lot in Rio. I want to show up for the fight in good shape and show my potential,” he stated, before demonstrating one of the positions he intends to use at UFC on FX 3.

“The trick is to put your hand on the hip, keeping your elbow tucked in to not let him get the armdrag. I lower one of my legs and advance; that causes him discomfort on his knee. After raising and lowering it, it’s important to put the knee at his hip and keep the pressure on,” he explains.

The UFC show in Florida will also feature other attraction, for Jiu-Jitsu fans too.Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall will square off for a second time to determine who takes on Joseph Benavidez for the title in the fledgling flyweight division. Now another son of Ceará State, Carlos Eduardo “Tá Danado”, will face the USA’s Mike Pierce, while Eddie Wineland toes the line against Scott Jorgensen, a bantamweight Daniel Moraes student. Dustin Pague will do battle with Jared Papazian, while the rampant Erick Silva will be looking to take out Charlie Brenneman, and Bernardo Trekko will be going for his first win under the UFC banner, against Henry Martinez.

No próximo dia 8 de junho, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Caio Magalhães enfim estreia no UFC. Em Fort Lauderdale, na Flórida, o cearense vai encarar o também estreante Buddy Roberts, 29 anos.

Durante os preparativos finais com a cúpula da Nova União no Rio, o lutador revelou ao GRACIEMAG.com sua estratégia para sair com a vitória, se possível por finalização.

“Vou primeiro sentir a luta. Ele é um cara que se comporta bem em pé, mas sempre procura o chão. Então vou fazer meu jogo, trocar e buscar o nocaute em pé, mas se cair na minha praia vou impor meu Jiu-Jitsu”, detalhou o cearense.

Invicto no MMA, Caio Magalhães foi contratado primeiro pelo Ultimate para lutar na categoria meio-pesado no UFC Rio. Como a luta com Fabio Maldonado caiu, ele teve tempo para descer de peso e entrar com tudo na divisão dos médios.

“Agora é a reta final, estou trreinando muito no Rio. Quero chegar bem na luta e mostrar meu potencial”, resume ele, que não se furtou a mostrar uma posição que pretende usar no UFC on FX 3.

“O macete é botar a mão no quadril, encolhendo o cotovelo para não tomar o arm-drag. Eu baixo uma das pernas e me adianto, isso já vai fazê-lo sentir um incômodo no joelho. Depois de levantar e descer, é importante botar o joelho no quadril, mantendo a pressão”, explica.
