The people of Brazil and UFC fans alike were introduced to light heavyweight Stanislav Nedkov at UFC Rio, where the Bulgarian knocked out Luiz Banha. But Professor Bruno Bastos (Nova União), called on at the last minute to be Nedkov’s corner, has known about the fighter and his style since way back.

“I trained with Nedkov when he fought at Sengoku in Japan,” recalls Bruno. “Since signing with the UFC he’s run into some bad luck with a spate of injuries – his and his opponents’, too –, so he only got to make his debut now. For this fight he unfortunately couldn’t make it to Bulgaria because he didn’t manage sponsorship, so we agreed that I’d help him with the final adjustments to his game here in Rio on the week of the fight, and it all worked out fine.”

Nedkov, who has knockouts and submissions (especially rear-naked chokes) on his ledger, is a well rounded fighter, asserts Bruno:

“His wrestling really is awesome, and he’s obviously got heavy hands, as everyone could see. Now his Jiu-Jitsu lacks polish but is fine for MMA,” he says in praise. “We’re working on getting him to spend some time with me in Dallas before his next fight.”

O povo brasileiro e os fãs do UFC foram apresentados ao meio-pesado Stanislav Nedkov no último UFC Rio, quando o invicto búlgaro nocauteou Luiz Banha na Barra da Tijuca. Mas o professor Bruno Bastos (Nova União), chamado às pressas para ser seu córner na luta, conhece Nedkov e seu jogo de outros carnavais.

“Eu treinei o Nedkov enquanto ele lutava no Sengoku japonês”, relembra Bruno. “Desde que assinou com o UFC, ele teve azar com algumas contusões, dele e de seus oponentes também, então conseguiu estrear somente agora. Para essa luta infelizmente não pude ir à Bulgária, porque ele não conseguiu patrocínio para isso, mas combinamos de eu fazer os ajustes finais no jogo dele aqui no Rio, na semana da luta, e deu tudo certo”.

Nedkov, que tem nocautes e finalizações (especialmente mata-leões) no seu histórico, é bem completo, como Bruno avalia.

“Ele tem um wrestling realmente muito bom, e obviamente a mão pesadíssima como todos puderam ver. Já o Jiu-Jitsu não é refinado, mas é tranquilo para o MMA”, elogia. “Estamos trabalhando para ele passar uma temporada em Dallas comigo antes de sua próxima luta”.

Um terremoto na escala 8,9 chacoalhou o Japão nesta madrugada (horário de Brasília), considerado um dos maiores já registrados no país. O tremor ocorreu ao longo da costa nordeste do Japão, produzindo um tsunami com ondas de até seis metros de altura.

Eventos nipônicos de MMA que estavam programados para os próximos dias já foram cancelados. O abalo deixou em alerta varias regiões do planeta, o Havaí é uma delas, onde já foram emitidos alertas de ondas entre 2 e 3 metros.

An earthquake reaching 8.9 on the Richter scale shook Japan today and is considered to be the most powerful ever registered in the nation. The tremor afflicted the northeastern coast of Japan, producing a tsunami up to six meters (20 feet) high.

Japanese MMA events scheduled for the coming days were canceled. The occurrence left a number of regions around the planet on high alert, Hawaii being one of them. With warning of waves between 2 and 3 meters tall were issued.

Ex-campeão do Sengoku, considerado um dos melhores do mundo no peso pena, Marlon Sandro comemora as novidades. O faixa-preta agora também se apresenta no evento americano Bellator, além de seguir com combates no Japão, o que deve ficar ainda mais interessante, já que os eventos Dream e Sengoku devem unir as forças.

“Fiz um contrato de dois anos com o Bellator, mas ainda luto no Japão pro pelo menos mais um ano e meio. Existe uma corrente muito forte para que o Sengoku e o Dream se unam, então vai ficar bem interessante. No entanto, nos Estados Unidos só posso lutar no Bellator”, fala ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Acostumado aos combates na terra do sol nascente, Marlon sabe que nos EUA vai encontrar reações diferentes do público.

“Nos dois países valorizam muito os atletas. Mas nos EUA a torcida costuma ser mais vibrante. Se gostam da luta, vibram bastante, mas se não gostam também vaiam. Já acompanhei o José Aldo e o Vitor Shaolin em combates lá e isso foi até bom para saber como funciona”, diz.

Marlon deve estar em ação num dos GPs do Bellator, provavelmente a partir de junho. Enquanto isso, já analisa os prováveis oponentes.

“Ainda estou conhecendo todos os lutadores da organização, comecei a analisar eles agora. Acompanhava muito o evento por causa do Patrício Pitbull, torcia por ele. Então ele é um lutador que já sei um pouco como luta. Mas tenho que estudar todos ainda, porque quero fazer frente e tentar esse cinturão”, encerra a fera da Nova União.

Falando em Bellator e Patrício Pitbull, o brasileiro tem combate agendado na organização. Encara George Karakhanyan no dia 19 de março.

A former Sengoku champion considered to be one of the best featherweights in the world, Marlon Sandro is celebrating some news. The black belt will now also appear at the American Bellator event, while continuing to fight in Japan, which will become all the more interesting now that Dream and Sengoku will likely join forces with each other.

“I signed a two-year contract with Bellator, but I’ll still fight in Japan for at least another year and a half. There’s a strong push for Sengoku and Dream to unite, so things will get really interesting. In the United States, though, I can only fight at Bellator,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

Accustomed to fighting in the Land of the Rising Sun, Marlon knows he will encounter different reactions from people in the United States.

“Both countries value athletes a lot. But in the USA the crowd tends to be more vocal. If they like a fight, they get really excited about it. If they don’t like it, they boo. I’ve accompanied José Aldo and Vitor Shaolin to their fights over there, which was good so I could see how things work,” he says.

Marlon should soon see action in one of the Bellator Gps, probably starting in June. In the meantime, he is looking at his likely opponents.

“I’m still getting to know the promotion’s fighters; I started analyzing them now. I used to keep up with the event because of Patrício Pitbull, I rooted for him a lot. So he’s one of the fighters I know a bit about. But I still have to study the rest of them, because I want to get in there and try for that belt,” says the Nova União hard-hitter in closing.

Durante os aprontos que antecederam o Strikeforce, na última semana, Jorge Santiago teve uma breve conversa com a equipe do GRACIEMAG.com:

“Quando luta de novo?”, perguntamos.

“Estamos fechando para voltar a lutar aqui nos EUA mesmo, como já havia comentado.”

“Mas luta aqui no Strikeforce?”

“Estamos vendo outra coisa. Provavelmente volto ao UFC, mesmo”, finalizou Santiago.

Enfim, parece que o regresso do faixa-preta à organização foi concretizado. Segundo matéria do site MMAWeekly, o brasileiro já tem até data e oponente para voltar ao octagon. Deve encarar Brian Stann no UFC 130, embora ainda não seja oficial.

Com 23 triunfos e oito derrotas no cartel, Santiago teve uma vitória e duas derrotas no UFC. Depois disso, venceu 11 lutas em 12 e ostentou o cinturão de médios do Sengoku.

During the lead-up to last week’s Strikeforce show, Jorge Santiago had a brief conversation with the GRACIEMAG.com crew:

“When’s your next fight?” we asked him.

“We’re inking a deal to fight here in the USA, like I’d said before.”

“But will you fight here at Strikeforce?”

“We’re looking at something else. Probably in the UFC,” said Santiago.

So it seems the black belt’s return to the promotion has come to pass. According to MMAWeekly.com, the Brazilian already has a date and opponent for his octagon return. It looks like it could be against Brian Stann at UFC 130, although it is not yet official.

With 23 wins and eight losses on his record, Santiago holds one win and two losses in the UFC. After which he won 11 out of 12 fights and captured the Sengoku middleweight belt.

Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marlon Sandro had a string of excellent performances in Japan, but on December 29 he ended up losing and had to hand his Sengoku championship belt over to his opponent, Hatsu Hioki.

However, even so it was a fight where Sandro overcame adversity. The ex-champion fought with a nasty infection in his hand, which probably took some of the power out of his potent punches.

Still in Japan, Marlon recovers and awaits his next chance. He will probably get another shot at Hioki, but with a new contract, he may well appear in the USA soon.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Marlon Sandro vinha de excelentes apresentações no Japão, mas acabou derrotado no dia 29 de dezembro e teve de entregar o cinturão de panas do Sengoku ao oponente Hatsu Hioki.

No entanto, mesmo assim foi uma luta de superação. O ex-campeão lutou com uma forte infecção na mão, o que, provavelmente, diminuiu a força dos seus perigosos socos.

Ainda no Japão, Marlon se recupera e aguarda a próxima chance. Provavelmente terá direito à revanche contra Hioki, mas, de contrato novo, também pode aparecer em ação nos EUA.
