Resilience is one of the finest virtues a BJJ fighter can have, whether it be for facing obstacles on the mat or in life. That virtue was demonstrated recently by Keenan Cornelius in his final at the Seattle Open.

After being sidelined for a while, Keenan came back hungry and faced Mohammed Mustafa with the heavyweight division on the line. Past halfway through the match, Keenan got tangled with his opponent in a lapel guard that became an armbar attempt. Mustafa bravely defended, but Keenan changed the grip, switched positions, performed a new transition, and finally concluded the armbar.

Angelica Galvão ruled over the black belt division last Saturday at the Seattle Open.

She won the medium-heavy and the open class division for a double gold campaign.

Here’s how she reached the top of the podium at the absolute.

The final was against Leanna Dittrich.

Entre as meninas, Angélica Galvão reinou. Com uma raspagem da guarda-fechada e um estrangulamento da montada, a esposa de André Galvão garantiu o segundo ouro no torneio, após já ter mordido o topo do pódio no meio-pesado.

He won double gold at the male adult black belt division.

No último sábado, dia 24, o Seattle Open foi realizado no ginásio do Everett Community College. Os nomes do evento, na faixa-preta, foram Michael Liera Jr. e Angélica Galvão, esposa de André Galvão, na dobradinha campeã da Atos. Ambos conquistaram o ouro duplo na competição, nas categorias de peso e também no absoluto.

Liera primeiro fechou o peso médio com o companheiro de equipe Josh Hinger. Já no absoluto, bateu Ferndando Herrera (Renzo Gracie JJ).

Angélica, por sua vez, fez duas batalhas pelos ouros. Primeiro, venceu Rossie Snow pelo título meio-pesado para em seguida encarar e bater Leanna Dittrich no peso aberto.

Michael Liera Jr. at the Atos JJ Camp

The 2015 Seattle Open went down this Saturday at the Everett Community College.

Michael Liera and Angelica Galvão were the standouts with double gold at the adult black belt division.

Liera closed out the middleweight division with teammate Josh Hinger and beat Fernando Herrera for the absolute title.

Angelica beat Rossie Snow for the medium-heavy title and then defeated Leanna Dittrich in the open class final.

Another first this weekend for the IBJJF was the Seattle Open held at Everett Community College. This was the first opportunity for those in the Northwest to experience an IBJJF tournament in their own backyard.

The overall team scores were as follows:

1 – Gracie Barra – 247
2 – Lovato Jiu-Jitsu – 114
3 – SBG International (SBGI) – 109

In the male black belt light-featherweight category, Milton Bastos earned the gold after defeating his opponent Thiago Goncalves.

The featherweight division title was earned by Wellington “Megaton” Dias after he won over Gustavo Carpio.

Lightweight gold went to Jason Palacios who defeated Zach Adamson.

Luis Rosa took on Cleves de Matos to earn the middleweight title.

James Puopolo defeated Larry King for the ultra-heavyweight gold.

James also earned the double gold of the day having conquered the open class as well.

The first edition of the Seattle International Open takes place Oct. 25.

The IBJJF has decided to extend the deadline for registration to this Sunday, Oct. 19.

The registration deadline for the NY BJJ Pro was also extended to Sunday, Oct. 19.

Don’t miss out and register today for the first ever IBJJF event in the state of Washington.

As a reminder, the IBJJF notes that the NY BJJ Pro (also on Oct. 25) is an open event (no pre-qualifying needed) for adult blue, purple and brown belts and all belts of the master division.

The deadline is fast approaching for one of IBJJF’s newest tournaments: the 2014 IBJJF Seattle Open. This will be the northwest’s first time competing in their backyard.

The event will be held on Oct. 25 at the Everett Community College Fitness Center located at 2206 Tower St., Everett, WA 98201.

Many GMA academies have athletes signed up already including Gracie Barra Seattle, Impact Jiu-Jitsu, Caio Terra Association, Lovato Jiu-Jitsu, Cascao Jiu-Jitsu, Foster Jiu-Jitsu, Ralph Gracie OC, Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Gracie Barra Pasadena, Five Rings Jiu-Jitsu and more.

The IBJJF announced today another city that will be welcoming one of its tournaments.

The Seattle International Open is officially scheduled October 25.

The setting will be the Everett Community College Fitness Center.

The IBJJF is still to release more details on registration period and costs to participate.
