The names of the fighters to earn best-of-the-night bonuses at this Saturday’s UFC 119 show in Indianapolis have been released. This time the sum of 70 thousand dollars was awarded to Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Matt Mitrione, Joey Beltran and C.B. Dollaway for their performances.

Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Matt Mitrione and Joey Beltran took home fight of the night bonuses. For his fight-ending guillotine, C.B. Dollaway took the prize for best submission.

Although Frank Mir won his fight with Mirko Cro Cop by knockout, the only one of the show, in a monotonous fight, the promoters decided not to reward the achievement.

O UFC divulgou os bônus da noite da sua 119ª edição, que aconteceu neste sábado, em Indianápolis. As premiações, dessa vez, valeram 70 mil dólares. Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Matt Mitrione, Joey Beltran e C.B. Dollaway garantiram a quantia na conta bancária. 

Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Matt Mitrione e Joey Beltran ficaram com o bônus de melhor luta da noite. Com uma guilhotina, C.B. Dollaway faturou a melhor  finalização.   

Apesar do nocaute de Frank Mir sobre Mirko Cro Cop, o único da edição, numa luta bem monótona, a organização decidiu não premiar este quesito dessa vez.

This Saturday the 25^th, sparks will fly in the Octagon for the first time in Indiana, USA, with UFC 119.

Frank Mir, a two-time heavyweight division, faces mixed martial arts legend Mirko Cro Cop. Brazil’s Rogério Minotouro goes up against rising-star Ryan Bader. Also at this coming installment of the event, a rematch between former welterweight champion Matt Serra and Chris Lytle, an Indianapolis native. The event will unfold at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Initially, Frank Mir was set to face Rodrigo Minotouro. A hip injury suffered in training last month pulled Minotouro from the bout, and Croatia’s Mirko Cro Cop stepped in in his place. Mir said he was motivated to face Minotauro but was pleased with the change of opponent, as he had already beaten the Brazilian in December 2008 and anything but a knockout within seven minutes would, to him, be defeat; and the idea he was intrigued by the danger that a single mistake could end the fight posed by a fighter like Cro Cop, who Mir will fight for the first time.

Cro Cop showed similar respect for his opponent’s abilities, stating that Frank is perhaps the best grappler in the UFC at present and that he will not try his luck with Mir on the ground.

Known for his heavy hands and lethal ground game, Rogério “Minotouro” Nogueira is dangerous wherever the fight may play out. It took just 1:56 min for him to knock out Luiz Cane in his UFC debut last November. In May of this year, however, he had a disappointing showing against Jason Brilz, taking the split-decision win to a salvo of boos. This time around he’ll have to step it up against the undefeated Ryan Bader. The fighter has rattled off four wins in a row since joining the UFC and holds a knockout win over the veteran Keith Jardine at UFC 110.

Matt Serra against Chris Lytle is another promising matchup. The two faced off in the “The Ultimate Fighter 4” reality show back in 2006 and, as they spent time as teammates, Serra and Lytle are familiar with each other’s games. Now after four years, fans will be able to watch the rematch and witness the two fighters’ growth in MMA.

On the preliminary card, Brazil’s Thiago Tavares returns to the Octagon to pick up where he left off. When he started back in 2007, he had a spectacular win over Jason Black in his second fight for the promotion and was touted as being a phenomenon. After a year sidelined, he faces first-timer Pat Audinwood.

“I’m going to show how the best in the world are in the UFC. Anyone coming in will have to lose to the veterans,” said the Brazilian.

Neste sábado, dia 25, o Octagon vai ferver pela primeira vez em Indiana, nos Estados Unidos, com o UFC 119.

Frank Mir, duas vezes campeão na categoria peso pesada, enfrenta a lenda das artes marciais mistas Mirko Cro Crop. O baiano Rogério Minotouro pega a estrela em ascensão Ryan Bader. Ainda nesta edição, a revanche entre o ex-campeão dos meio-médios Matt Serra e Chris Lytle, nativo de Indianápolis. O evento será realizado na Conseco Fieldhouse em Indianápolis, Indiana.

No Brasil, o show será exibido ao vivo no Combate às 23h, e também em alta definição no Combate HD. Uma hora antes, o assinante do canal à la carte especializado em lutas da Globosat, confere o “Countdown to UFC 119”, programa que traz toda a preparação dos principais lutadores da noite.

Inicialmente, Frank Mir enfrentaria Rodrigo Minotauro na edição 119. Por causa de uma lesão no quadril, sofrida durante os treinos no mês passado, Minotauro foi substituído pelo croata Mirko Cro Cop.  “Eu estava muito motivado para lutar com Minotauro. Mas era alguma coisa que eu já tinha feito na edição 92. Se eu entrasse no Octagon e não o nocauteasse em sete minutos ou ganhasse na decisão dos jurados, para mim, seria como uma derrota”, disse Mir, que venceu o brasileiro em dezembro de 2008. “Com Cro Cop é algo totalmente novo. Eu fico intrigado com a idéia de se eu cometer um erro, a luta acaba”, completou Mir.

“Talvez Frank seja o melhor grappler do UFC hoje e, definitivamente, eu não vou testar a minha sorte no chão. Isso não é um segredo, é algo que todo mundo sabe, eu vou tentar manter o Frank em pé”, revelou o Cro Cop.

Conhecido pelas suas mãos pesadas e seu jogo mortal no solo, Rogério “Minotouro” Nogueira é perigoso em qualquer tipo de jogo. Em apenas 1min56s ele nocauteou Luiz Cane na sua estréia no UFC em novembro passado. Em maio deste ano, porém, teve atuação decepcionante e venceu Jason Brilz na decisão dividida, sob vaias. Agora, encara o seu adversário mais duro, o invicto meio pesado Ryan Bader. O lutador acumula quatro vitórias consecutivas desde que começou no UFC e vem de um nocaute contra o veterano Keith Jardine no UFC 110.

Matt Serra contra Chris Lytle é outra luta que promete. Os dois se enfrentaram no reality “The Ultimate Fighter 4”, em 2006 e, como eram companheiros de equipe, Serra e Lytle conheciam o jogo um do outro. Enfim, depois de quase quatro anos, os fãs poderão ver a revanche e checar o crescimento dos dois lutadores no MMA.

Nas lutas preliminares, o brasileiro Thiago Tavares volta a trilhar o caminho da vitória. Quando começou em 2007, obteve uma vitória espetacular contra Jason Black na sua segunda luta na organização e passou a ser chamado de Fenômeno. Depois de um ano fora do evento, enfrenta o estreante Pat Audinwood.

“Vou mostrar que no UFC estão os melhores do mundo. Quem chegar vai ter que perder dos veteranos”, disse o brasileiro.

BJ Penn will have a tough task this Saturday, when he tries to recover the UFC lightweight belt against Frankie Edgar in Boston. Penn ended up losing his belt by unanimous decision after a close contest at UFC 112. For this fight, the black belt promises a better performance.

“I’ve been training really hard. In the old days, I’d pride myself on how little I needed to train to win, but now I prefer to brag about how much I train to do so. I try to train a lot, eat right and see how far I can go,” he says.

“Everyone talks about my physical conditioning and how they can beat me. But they forget that I fought Sean Sherk and he’s considered to be a cardio machine. I fought Kenny Florian and he never gets tired. I’ve fought so many guys with good conditioning in recent years, but they insist on bringing up the subject,” adds the fighter on the UFC website.

BJ is considered by many to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all times. Besides recovering his lightweight belt, the fighter wants to reaffirm that position.

“I want to be categorized in a level all my own, like Randy Couture. You don’t want to be in the middle, along with all the rest. When they talk about us, we want them to say something special, like Joe Frazier or Muhammad Alia, that type of people. You want to be extraordinary.”

In the end, BJ hopes to use in the rematch an ingredient that was missing in his last appearance.

“I have to not like the person at the other end of the ring and that’s why I consider myself different in several aspects, not just as an athlete, but as a fighter. When people fight in real life, it’s not because they are athletes, but because something irritated them. When a man raises his fists, it’s because he’s run out of ideas. Those are natural instincts that I have and if someone wants to fight me, I hope they’re irritated so I can get irritated and, then, we can fight,” he closes.

No dia 9 de janeiro, sites de todo o mundo davam conta da aposentadoria de Hermes França. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu é o brasileiro que conseguiu ir mais longe entre os leves no UFC, tendo disputado o cinturão da categoria em 2007, contra Sean Sherk. Na ocasião, acabou derrotado por decisão dos jurados. Numa entrevista exclusiva ao GRACIEMAG.com, o nosso GMA Hermes comenta a decisão de pendurar as luvas e analisa a carreira.

Foi noticiada a sua aposentadoria, mas você pouco falou sobre o assunto. Afinal, por que parou?

Pois é, parei cara. Estava muito difícil me concentrar para lutar. È preciso estar focado 100% no treinamento e eu estava dando aulas e trabalhando com a minha academia de Jiu-Jitsu. Estava difícil, aí falei: ‘quer saber de uma coisa, vou parar’. E foi o que fiz. Não deixei de lado as coisas que gosto, que é dar aulas e treinar os atletas. Estou dando muita aula de Jiu-Jitsu e a vida continua. Só parei mesmo de lutar.

Mas não faria nem uma luta de despedida?

Não. Já fiz o que era para ser feito.

Qual luta mais te marcou?

Todas as lutas marcaram. Lembro que cheguei nos Estados Unidos sem nada, tendo que trabalhar. Acabei tendo a oportunidade de lutar no Ultimate depois e disputei o título. Acho que toda luta tem seu papel. É lógico que a primeira no UFC (vitória contra Rich Crunkilton, no UFC 42) a gente nunca esquece! Foi só felicidade.

E qual foi o adversário mais marcante?

O Marcus Aurélio me marcou, porque foi meu professor da faixa-azul até a marrom. Ficou um negócio meio chato e essa também foi uma luta marcante.

O que fará agora que não luta mais MMA?

Estou com uma academia no Oregon e a abertura será no dia 13 de março. Vou fazer um seminário legal e também é muito bacana o fato de muita gente que mora por aqui estar amarradão. O Matt Lindland já falou comigo e o Chael Sonnen também está por aqui. O Fabiano “Pega Leve’, que é um amigão, também, então está tudo em casa. Estou só com gente boa.

Mas você vai ser treinador de MMA?

Agora só de Jiu-Jitsu. Já estamos com três academias e, em Nova York (East West Combat Club), com apenas quatro meses, já contamos com 60 alunos. Não posso esquecer o Jiu-Jitsu. O MMA é difícil de ensinar, é problema, muita dor de cabeça ensinar ao atleta. O Jiu-Jitsu é emocionante e é um esporte que nunca vai acabar. O Guybson Sá, uma pedreira de 21 anos lá de Fortaleza, está aqui comigo também me ajudando.

No MMA você disse que não luta. Mas na arte suave, luta?

Com certeza! O pano é a minha segunda pele. Pretendo lutar o Pan-Americano, agora em abril. Lutei os dois últimos Mundiais sem kimono e ganhei medalha no passado. Gosto da competição e isso me faz continuar em forma. Em campeonato de Jiu-Jitsu e submission, estarei dentro.

Gostaria de dar algum recado?

Quero agradecer a todos os fãs. Gostaria de pedir para quem está na batalha que não desista do esporte, nunca desista. Para mim nada foi fácil. Comecei nos EUA lavando carros e ganhando US$200 por semana. Para chegar, tive de lutar. E isso serve em qualquer segmento. Peço a todos que nunca desistam do sonho.

On January 9, websites around the world announced the retirement of Hermes Franca. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt is the Brazilian who furthest in the UFC lightweight division, having challenged for the belt in 2007, against Sean Sherk. At the time, he lost by judges’ decision. In an exclusive GRACIEMAG.com interview, our GMA Hermes discussed the decision to hang up his gloves and examines the career.

Your retirement was widely reported, but you hardly addressed the subject. In the end, why stop?

Yeah, I stopped. It was having a hard time concentrating on getting ready for fights. You have to be 100% focused on training and I was teaching and working on my Jiu-Jitsu academy. It was hard, so I said, you know what, I’ll stop’. And I did. I didn’t put aside the things I like, which is to teach and train athletes. I’m teaching a lot of Jiu-Jitsu classes and life goes on. Just I really did stop fighting.

But you won’t do a farewell fight?

No. I did what had to be done.

Which fight marked you most?

All my fights marked me. I remember when I arrived in the United States with nothing, having to work. I ended up getting an opportunity to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and then challenged for the title. I think every fight has its role. Of course, the first in the UFC (victory over Rich Crunkilton, at UFC 42) you never forget! It was bliss.

And who was the opponent that marked you most?

Marcus Aurelio marked me, because he was my teacher from blue to brown belt. It was kind of bothersome but that was my most notable fight.

What will you do now that you will no longer fight MMA?

I have a gym in Oregon and the opening will be March 13. I’ll hold a cool seminar and it’s also realy cool the fact that so many people around here are stoked. Matt Lindland has already spoken with me and Chael Sonnen is here, too.  Fabiano “Pega Leve”, a friend of mine, too, so I’m right at home. Good folks here.

But will you be an MMA coach?

For now just Jiu-Jitsu. We have three academies and, in New York (East West Combat Club), after only four months, we already have 60 students. I cannot forget about Jiu-Jitsu.  MMA is difficult to teach, it’s a problem, a lot of headaches to teach the athlete. Jiu-Jitsu is exciting and it’s a sport that will never end.  Guybson Sa, a tough 21-year-old from Fortaleza, is also here helping me.

You said you won’t fight MMA. But what about in the gentle art, will you fight?

Absolutely! The gi is my second skin. I intend to fight at the Pan-American, coming up in April. I competed at the last two No-Gi Worlds and have won medals in the past. I like competition and it makes me keep in shape. In Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling, I’m in.

Would you like to leave a message to someone?

I want to thank all my fans. I would like to ask that anyone in the battle not give up the sport, never give up. For me nothing was easy. I started washing cars in the U.S. and earning $ 200 a week. To get there, I had to fight. And that goes for anything. I ask everyone to never give up their dreams.
