One of the great black belts produced by Carlson Gracie, Zé Mario Sperry didn’t just make a name for himself in MMA, with his performances in the Pride FC promotion. In the gi, Zé won the absolute division of the World Championship in 1998, overcoming Roberto “Roleta” Magalhães in the final. The old-schoolers will also remember, for example, the match with Léo Dalla at Hotel Nacional in the early nineties. At a time marked by fierce inter-academy rivalry, Sperry took to doing push-ups after winning.

Time went by and the rivalry turned to friendship, like in the recent ADCC supermatch where “Zé Machine”, 45, overcame Renzo Gracie, 44, in a match where both showed they still have plenty of fuel left in the old tank. The encounter with Rnezo rekindled Sperry’s love of training, which he carries on doing at Team Nogueira headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

So our editor of photography, Gustavo Aragão, was there last Wednesday, February 29, and witnessed the fighter being rewarded the fifth stripe on his black belt by red belt João Alberto Barreto. Rodrigo Antunes and Marcio Livio also received stripes.

Um dos grandes faixas-pretas formados por Carlson Gracie, Zé Mario Sperry não fez bonito apenas no MMA, na participação no Pride. Lutando de kimono, Zé foi campeão mundial absoluto, em 1998, tendo enfrentado Roberto Magalhães, o Roleta, na final. Os mais antigos também lembram, por exemplo, da luta casada contra Léo Dalla no Hotel Nacional, no início dos anos 90. Numa época de muita rivalidade entre as academias, Sperry tratou de fazer flexões após o triunfo.

O tempo passa e a rivalidade ganha o tom de amizade, como foi, por exemplo, na recente superluta no ADCC. Aos 45 anos, Zé Machine bateu Renzo Gracie, 44, num combate em que ambos mostraram que ainda têm muita lenha para queimar. O desafio contra Renzo reacendeu a chama de Sperry pelos treinos, o que segue fazendo no CT do Team Nogueira, no Rio de Janeiro.

Pois bem, nosso editor de fotografia, Gustavo Aragão, esteve por lá na última quarta-feira, dia 29 de fevereiro, e acompanhou a entrega do quinto grau na faixa-preta do lutador pelo mestre faixa-vermelha João Alberto Barreto. Também receberam graus os faixas-pretas Rodrigo Antunes e Marcio Livio.

Zé Mario Sperry não quis saber de ficar comemorando a vitória sobre Renzo Gracie no domingo, e no dia seguinte já estava em Manchester para um seminário na academia capitaneada pelo faixa-preta Rodrigo Antunes.

No outro dia, véspera de seu aniversário, o campeão da superluta ministrou mais um seminário na Inglaterra, na academia de Zé Marcello em Milton Keynes. Na quarta, aniversário de Sperry, ele retornou ao Brasil. Hoje, ele já estava treinando na academia.

Zé Mario Sperry didn’t want to hear about celebrating his win over Renzo Gracie last Sunday, and the next day he was already in Manchester for a seminar at the academy under the captaincy of black belt Rodrigo Antunes.

The other day, the day before his birthday, the supermatch champion taught yet another seminar in England, at Zé Marcello’s academy in Milton Keynes. On Wednesday, Sperry’s birthday, he returned home to Brazil. Today, he was already back to training in the academy.

Três grandes representantes da luta no Brasil, os campeões de Jiu-Jitsu e MMA Rickson e Royler Gracie, ao lado do medalhista olímpico de judô e também faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Flávio Canto, ministraram, nesta quarta-feira, no ginásio da Fortaleza de São João, na Urca, um seminário em prol das vítimas da chuva na Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro.

O evento, produzido em poucos dias pelo pessoal da Monk Sports, com grande ajuda dos faixas-pretas Marcelo Tetel e Rodrigo Antunes, arrecadou quase 6 toneladas de alimentos doados por pouco mais de 800 participantes. A ação também contou com o apoio do Exército brasileiro; da CBJJ, que cedeu os tatames e alimentos; e da Vulkan, que doou vários kimonos para serem leiloados, entre outros.

Praticantes da faixa-branca a preta lotaram as dependências. Entre eles, figuras desconhecidas, simplesmente amantes do esporte, e feras consagradas como Ricardo De La Riva, Kyra Gracie e Letícia Ribeiro, entre tantos outros, o que é possível conferir na galeria de fotos.

No palco montado diante das centenas de participantes, Canto mostrou posições de técnica avançada, Royler priorizou a defesa pessoal, enquanto Rickson brindou a todos com uma verdadeira palestra em que comentou pontos fundamentais do Jiu-Jitsu, seja na parte técnica ou na filosofia da arte, o chamado “Jiu-Jitsu invisível”.

Para Luis, faixa-marrom da Gracie Humaitá Petrópolis, por exemplo, foi mais que inesquecível. O lutador teve o prazer de sentir na pele as técnicas de Rickson, chamado pelo Gracie na demonstração das posições. “Cara, foi um prazer enorme. Jamais poderia imaginar que um dia praticaria com Rickson!”.

Muito mais que isso, o evento comprovou a força do Jiu-Jitsu num momento tão delicado, e que essa solidariedade sirva de exemplo, se expandindo a todos os esportes. GRACIEMAG apoia!

Three great representatives of the martial arts in Brazil, Jiu-Jitsu and MMA champions Rickson and Royler Gracie and Olympic judo medalist and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Flávio Canto held a seminar to benefit the victims of catastrophic mudslides in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro, thisWednesday at São João Fort in the Urca neighborhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The event – put together within a few days by the folks at Monk Sports with the help of black belts Marcelo Tetel and Rodrigo Antunes – brought in nearly six metric tons of food donated by a little over 800 participants. The effort was also backed by the Brazilian Army; the CBJJ, which lent mats and donated food; and Vulkan, which donated a number of gis to be auctioned off; among others.

Practitioners from white to black belt packed the venue. Among them were well known personalities, lovers of the sport, and established names in Jiu-Jitsu like Ricardo De La Riva, Kyra Gracie, and Letícia Ribeiro, among others, who are pictured in the photo gallery.

On the stage set up in the gymnasium, before the eyes of the hundreds of participants, Canto demonstrated advanced techniques, Royler emphasized self-defense, while Rickson treated everyone to a true lecture on the key aspects of Jiu-Jitsu when it comes to technique and the philosophy of the art, the so-called “invisible Jiu-Jitsu.”

To Luis, a Gracie Humaitá brown belt, for example, it was an unforgettable experience. The fighter had the pleasure of witnessing Rickson’s technique first hand, as he was called on by the Gracie to help demonstrate the positions. “Man, it was an enormous pleasure. I’d never imagined one day I’d get to practice with Rickson!”

Much more than that, the event proved just how strong Jiu-Jitsu is during such a delicate moment, and this solidarity served as an example, expanding to other sports. GRACIEMAG is in full support!

What follows is important information regarding participation in the “Martial Arts for Solidarity” event to take place today, Wednesday the 19th.

ACCESS: Everyone will need to present ID to get into São João Fort, whether by foot or car. As it is a military base, everyone must present official documentation with a photo. ATTENTION: Entry will only be permitted after 7pm!

PARKING: 70 parking spots will be made available within the fort, so the organizers request participants car pool and, when possible, use public transport. The following bus lines pass in front of the Fort:

– 107 – Urca/Central

Home training at Team Marangoni

Another black belt who likes training at home is Rodrigo Antunes, of BTT, and the submission whiz managed to put together a first-rate team. “I saw the article and I’d like to share our ‘hideout’ with you. Taking advantage of how the academy where I worked was getting rid of its mats, I bought them. After some time, I invited friends over to roll, the group grew and grew, and now nearly every Saturday we have between ten and fifteen friends from different academies over to train – all burly black belts!”

A gentle art practitioner in Canada, Nathan Fitzmaurice practices “Home-Jitsu” constantly. “When I’m not training at Gracie Barra Fort McMurray, I’m sweating it up I my brother’s in-laws’ garage.”

Felipe Cavalcante is another of the home-training adept in Australia, and it has bore fruit for him. “I’m a Splinter BJJ black belt. I lived in Perth, Australia, for two and a half years, I got a job outside the city and the solution was to buy a mat and train with the local folks. With the dojo, I managed to make some pretty good money teaching private lessons. I received an offer to teach class at the other side of Australia, in Brisbane. I moved, but I took my mat with me. It’s a great way to keep in shape and practice positions.”

Faced with a lack of space, “Home-Jitsu” was the solution to Ricardo Puléo’s problems. “I’m from Curitiba and moved to Ponta Porã, Mato Grosso do Sul, in 2006. I taught at an academy where we were always getting complaints about how there wasn’t enough ventilation. One of my students has a big room at his house and his father let us make it our headquarters. We bought tire shreds, managed to get a canvas donated to us, and we set up our dojo. That’s how our “Home-Jitsu” got started. Now we train at that student of mine’s house and have a great mat. There still aren’t too many of us, but the few that there are make up a family!”

Kylson is getting his daughter used to the mat.

Kylson Mota can’t do without some home training and, in so doing, takes the chance to get his daughter involved in Jiu-Jitsu. “I have a mat at my house. I’m already getting my daughter Kyara into it with me and it’s like therapy, beyond being just a martial art,” he says.

Johnny Gui innovated in New Zealand with “Farm-Jitsu.” “I represent and train at Nine Nine. In early 2003, I went to New Zealand for the first time, specifically to the city of Dunedin, in Sawyers Bay. I went thinking I was going to teach a group of ten students. Initially, I was going to stay for a month, but I ended up staying for seven months. These days, even with the team in a big academy, I never stop training where it all started, in the garage at home, in a small farm. We call it the “Farm-Jitsu” group! In this group we have the winner of the Abu Dhabi tryouts in the blue belt/lightweight division who will soon compete over in the land of the Sheikhs, Adam Johnson, besides the kids group comprised of the sons of friends who learned the gentle art early.”

Now Rafael Marangoni presented a legion of “Home-Jitsu” adept. “I’m from Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, and I teach a group of 120 athletes, and we all practice ‘Home-Jitsu.’”

CheckMat black belt Anderson DJ Kron made the area by his pool into the most special place in his house, a mat with a full-service functional-training studio, where he often receives friends like Leon Amâncio, Caio Callado, Bernardo Tovolaro, and Thomas Malocka, among a lot of other friends and students. After training it’s all a bout a dip in the pool to cool off.
