Rafael Lavato, a Saulo and Xande Ribeiro team black belt, overcame heavyweight opponents like Roberto Tussa, on his way to No-Gi Worlds gold.

The fighter – one of the foremost American gentle art competitors – demonstrates a number of his tricks in the closed guard. In the video below, Lovato teaches sweeps, submissions, and a number of variations.

Rafael Lovato, faixa-preta da equipe de Saulo e Xande Ribeiro, bateu adversários como Roberto Tussa, no peso pesado, para ficar com o ouro no Mundial Sem kimono.

Gustavo Dantas on podium at Las Vegas Open

Following placing second at the Las Vegas Open and third at the American No-Gi Nationals, team Nova União, led by GMA Gustavo Dantas, is heading full steam into this weekend’s American Nationals in Carson, California.

“We’re taking forty competitors this time,” warns the black belt, who predicts a close battle:

“I believe first place will be between Gracie Barra and BJJ Revolution, who have a lot of athletes. But third place will be an even closer contest between Nova União, Ribeiro Brothers and Gracie Humaitá,” he wagers.

The goal is to make it onto the winners’ stand and to have another solid campaign in a big IBJJF tournament.

“Our team aims to make it back onto the podium at the Worlds and the Pan. At this year’s Pan, we won the juvenile division, just as we did at the No-Gi Worlds in 2009. But our goal is to take first in the adult division again, like we did in 1997. We know it will be a long road, but we’re fighting for it,” he says in closing.

Gustavo Dantas no pódio do Las Vegas Open

Depois do segundo posto no Las Vegas Open e o terceiro lugar no Americano sem kimono, o time da Nova União comandado pelo GMA Gustavo Dantas parte com tudo para buscar mais um pódio, dessa vez no Americano de Jiu-Jitsu (American National), que acontece neste fim de semana, em Carson, Califórnia.

“Estamos levando 40 competidores dessa vez”, avisa o faixa-preta, que prevê uma disputa bem acirrada:

“Acredito que o primeiro posto vai ser disputado entre a Gracie Barra e a BJJ Revolution, que vão com muitos atletas. Mas a disputa do terceiro lugar vai ser bem acirrada entre a Nova União, Ribeiro Brothers e Gracie Humaitá”, aposta.

A meta é subir novamente ao pódio e estender as boas campanhas aos eventos principais da IBJJF.

“Nossa equipe tem o objetivo de voltar ao pódio no Mundial e no Pan. No Pan deste ano, vencemos no juvenil, resultado igual ao do Mundial sem kimono, em 2009. Mas nossa meta é ficar em primeiro no adulto novamente, como fizemos em 1997. Sabemos que é uma longa estrada, mas estaremos lutando”, encerra.
