A sitting IBJJF no-gi world champion, the De La Riva representative took on Juliana Simões (Checkmat) for the absolute division’s final. In just over two minutes, Cláudia had transitioned from the closed guard, scaled her opponent and reached the back to apply a rear naked choke. GRACIEMAG: How did you feel before the UFC debut, Drysdale?

ROBERT DRYSDALE: Believe it or not, the pressure I felt on entering the octagon was the same I always felt since I started competing in Jiu-Jitsu, since white belt. How do you see your future in this light heavyweight category, which has Jon Jones as the champion?

I really want to fight before the end of the year. Because I am free from wounds, I believe that I will be fighting soon. I have already imagined myself fighting against all the guys in the category. I do not like to think far ahead, I know my place in the UFC – Just got here now. My focus today is therefore to correct my mistakes and improve a little each day.

Black belt Beneil Dariush wins his UFC debut.

The Jiu-Jitsu community is congratulating another one of their black belts who has successfully represented the gentle art in MMA. Beneil Dariush, black belt at GMA Ralph Gracie OC, just won his UFC debut at 1:45 of the first round. His fight was the first on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 35: Rockhold vs. Philippou in Duluth, GA. His record remains undefeated, now 7-0-0.

Benny knocked his opponent Charlie Brenneman to the ground with a left hand and capitalized. He quickly adapted his game to the ground trapping the right arm of Brenneman while he landed punches from all sides. After securing the seat belt hold, Brenneman stood up and Benny sunk his second hook. A rear naked choke stopped the fight not long after.

This was Benny’s first fight in the UFC after filling for an injured fighter. Even after his opponent was changed as well in the last-minute match-up, he was still able to execute his plan using both muay thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

Joao Johnny Faria had his MMA fight on Saturday, August 24 in Oceanside, CA. The Beatdown at the Beach event brought many Jiu-Jitsu supporters and practitioners into the crowd as the card held local BJJ stars. The 170 title fight, however, was between Johnny Faria and Manny Garcia, which ended before it could really start.

The black belt from GMA Gracie Del Mar immediately took down his opponent with a double-leg takedown, got into mount and a ground and pound ensued. In order to shy from the strikes, his opponent turned but gave Johnny a clear path to his back and a rear-naked choke ended the fight in the first round.

The fight ended well before the two-minute mark. Many of the Gracie Humatia supporters were present to give Johnny the loudest crowd.
