For many, the Mundials last Sunday will be remembered as a day of triumph and rejoicing, as a day of beating the world.  For anyone who met Peter Bivona, it will forever mark a day that the world lost a friend.

A blue belt under Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, the ultra-heavyweight had muscles on top of muscles, was tattooed from shaved head to toe, and drove a Hummer big enough to fit his personality.  He was large, loud, and never failed to make his presence known.  But give him ten minutes and you would find one of the kindest, most genuine people you’d ever meet.

Since the day he took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he was an example of loyalty and sacrifice.  Peter was the first to offer to drive someone to the gym or tournaments. If you were fighting there was no doubt he’d be in your corner.  If you were flying into the Miami airport, Peter would be there waiting on you. And if you tried to stop during training, he’d be the first to push you to get up one more time.

It is said that what we do for ourselves dies with us, and that we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. That is what Peter did.  There’s not a person that Peter met in his life that can’t think back about him and smile, there’s not a person who knew him that isn’t better because of it.

Although he struggled with nagging injuries, it was Peter’s dream to fight in the World Championships.  Friday, he got his chance.  The match did not go his way, but that didn’t stop him from pumping up every other member of his team, myself included.  He believed in us more than even we did, lending us his invaluable strength.

Peter was hospitalized with pain Sunday morning and passed away during the black belt finals.  He wasn’t there to watch his coach, mentor, and best friend Cyborg beat the 2009 world champion. He didn’t sit next to us for the spectacular come-from-behind triangle in the semifinal.  But where ever he was, we all know he was cheering the loudest.  We love you, Peter.

Para muitos, o domingo passado do Mundial será lembrado como um dia de triunfo e alegria, como o dia dos melhores do mundo. Mas, para quem conheceu Peter Bivona, o domingo sempre será o dia em que o mundo perdeu um amigo.

Faixa-azul de Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, o peso pesadíssimo tinha músculos em cima dos músculos, foi tatuado da cabeça raspada aos pés, e dirigiu um Hummer grande o suficiente para caber sua personalidade. Ele era grande, falou sempre alto, e nunca deixou de anunciar sua presença. Depois de dez minutos com ele, porém, você saberia que conheceu uma das pessoas mais reais, mais gentis que existem no mundo.

Desde o dia em que começou no Jiu-Jitsu, ele foi um exemplo de lealdade e sacrifício pela equipe. Peter foi o primeiro a oferecer carona para os campeonatos e para a academia, para quem não tinha carro. Se você estava lutando, não havia dúvida de que ele estaria do seu lado. Se você estivesse chegando ao aeroporto de Miami, Peter estaria lá esperando por você. E se você tentou parar durante o treino, ele seria o primeiro a te empurrar para levantar mais uma vez.

Dizem que o que fazemos para nós mesmos morre conosco, e que fazemos pelos outros e pelo mundo permanece e é imortal. Isso é o que Peter fez. Não há uma pessoa que conheceu Peter que não olhe para trás e sorria ao lembrar dele; não há uma pessoa que ele encontrou que não seja, hoje, melhor por causa dele.

Apesar de sempre ter problemas com lesões, era o sonho de Peter lutar o Mundial. Sexta-feira, ele teve a chance. A luta não foi para o lado dele, mas isso não o impediu de dar uma força imensa para todos da equipe, incluíndo eu. Ele acreditava em nós mais do que nós mesmo, dando a sua força de valor inestimável.

Peter foi internado com dores nos pulmões domingo de manhã e faleceu durante as finais da faixa-preta. Ele não estava na Pyramid para assistir ao seu mestre, mentor e melhor amigo Cyborg bater o campeão mundial de 2009, Gabriel Vella. Ele não sentou ao nosso lado para ver seu espetacular triângulo que virou a luta na semifinal. Mas, de onde estivesse, todos nós sabemos que ele estava torcendo mais alto. Nós te amamos, Peter.
