Genovesi, following a successful neck attack at the Budapest Open.

Victor Genovesi had a 100% run at the IBJJF’s Budapest Open, held last weekend in Hungary. Genovesi, who closed out the absolute podium for Alliance with Lucas Figueiredo, had to do some hard work earlier for the lightweight title.

After making his way through the field, Genovesi met Franck Hart (Academie Pythagore) in the final. The match was very hard-fought, with chances for both sides, but after pressing on the guard pass, Genovesi managed to reach the back, and then he wasted no time securing the win with a choke.

Depois de avançar na categoria, Victor encontrou Frank Hart (Academie Pythagore) na finalíssima pelo ouro. A luta foi muito disputada, com chances para ambos os lados, mas após pressionar na passagem de guarda, Victor conseguiu chegar nas costas, e não perdeu tempo ao atacar no estrangulamento para garantir a vitória.

Gabi attacks from the back.

Not satisfied with the title she won in the London Open’s featherweight division last weekend, Gabriela Fechter signed up for the absolute in search of another gold medal. After advancing through her bracket, she faced Julia Maele in the final.

A tough Julia didn’t allow Gabi to play freely. However, with a technical, precise progression, Gabi made adjustments until achieving control from the top, with Julia on all fours — a perfect situation for the Checkmat black-belt to attack Julia from the back, eventually choking her.

Não satisfeita com o título conquistado no peso-pena do London Open, realizado no último final de semana, na Inglaterra, Gabriela Fechter se inscreveu e caiu para dentro do absoluto, na busca de mais uma medalha dourada.

Depois de avançar na chave, Gabi encarou Julia Maele na finalíssima em peso aberto. Dura na queda, Julia não deixou que Gabi jogasse com liberdade. Contudo, em progressão técnica e precisa, Gabi foi se arrumando até chegar no controle por cima, com Julia em quatro apoios, situação propícia para que a faixa-preta da Checkmat desse o seu bote nas costas, que eventualmente culminou no estrangulamento.

Fernando stretches the choke to apply the most pressure possible.

The CBJJ’s Curitiba Winter  Open, held at the end of February, served as a stage for GFTeam’s Fernandinho de Jesus to perform a lightning-fast finish.

In his fight with João Antônio, Fernandinho wasted no time, pulling to the de la Riva guard and spinning with the berimbolo to his opponent’s back. From there he just had to adjust himself to get the collar and apply the bow-and-arrow. All in just one minute.

Sempre disputada, a divisão de elite do Jiu-Jitsu entre os faixas-pretas costuma trazer ao público duelo acirrados, mas em uma das finais do Curitiba Open da CBJJ, realizado no fim de fevereiro, o atleta Fernandinho de Jesus, da GFTeam liquidou a fatura em apenas um minuto.

No duelo contra João Antônio, Fernandinho tratou de colocar rapidamente no seu jogo, puxando para a guarda De la Riva e girando com o berimbolo para as costas do oponente. De lá, bastou se ajustar para catar a gola e estrangular no arco e flecha.

Cyborg adjusts on top to finish.

It’s already a tradition for Roberto Cyborg, a teacher living in Florida, to throw himself headfirst to fight the younger black-belts in most editions of the Miami Open. This month he again shone in the tournament, winning titles in his weight class and the absolute, with one interesting detail taking place in the latter.

To nab his second gold medal of the day, Cyborg faced Alexandre Molinaro. Upon pulling, Alexandre saw his guard passed by Cyborg before Cyborg moved on to the mount and set up the winning attack.

First, Cyborg passed his hand under his opponent’s head, separating it from the mat. Then he hooked his opponent’s elbow with the other hand and “walked” with his fingers to bring the arm to the kata-gatame position. After trying on one side, Cyborg went for the other arm and succeeded, then bringing his head and shoulder into the maneuver to apply pressure on top.

Já é tradição para Roberto Cyborg, professor radicado na Flórida, se jogar contra a garotada do adulto faixa-preta no Miami Open de Jiu-Jitsu, em boa parte das suas edições no ano. Cyborg mais uma vez brilhou no torneio com títulos no peso e no absoluto, com um detalhe interessante na disputa do aberto.

Para conquistar seu segundo ouro do dia, Cyborg encarou Alexandre Molinaro na final de peso aberto. Ao puxar, Alexandre viu sua guarda ser passada por Cyborg antes deste avançar para a montada, e em seguida armar o bote da vitória.

Primeiro, Cyborg passou a mão por baixo da cabeça do adversário, para tirar a mesma do solo. Em seguida, Cyborg enganchou o cotovelo do oponente com a outra mão e “caminhou” com os dedos para levar o braço à posição do kata-gatame. Depois de tentar de um lado, Cyborg foi para o outro braço e obteve exito, para então colocar a sua cabeça e ombro na jogada para aplicar pressão por cima.

Across two finals, over 150 points scored.

A world champion and sure sight in many open tournaments around the world, Cláudia do Val nearly rolled over the IBJJF scoreboard last month as she approached 100 points in a 10-minute fight at the Manila Open, in the Philippines.

The match was in the absolute division against local fighter Maybelline Masuda. Weighing 20kg less than Cláudia, Maybelline signed up for the super-heavy division to have someone to fight, and her Brazilian opponent proceeded to achieve two convincing wins.

In their first encounter, in the super-heavy division, Cláudia scored 63-0 and finished with a rear naked choke. Then, in the absolute, Maybelline came back for more and allowed 91 points before getting submitted via armbar. (Watch below.)

Part of the BJJ community went online to discuss the scoring, with diverging opinions. Some even called Cláudia’s attitude disrespectful. Graciemag talked to the world champion, who explained the real situation.

“In reality, I fought very carefully,” she told us. “I could have finished earlier, but my opponent was very small, lighter and defended herself well. I could have applied more force and will to get her, but I didn’t want her to get hurt. I fought in a serious way and without disrespecting her, looking for a technical way to finish the fight without causing any great damage. I evolved throughout the fight until finishing on both occasions, with no injury caused to either fighter.”

Campeã mundial e figura certa nos mais diversos opens pelo mundo, Cláudia do Val quase “zerou” o placar da IBJJF no mês de janeiro, ao se aproximar da marca dos 100 pontos numa luta de 10min, no Manila Open, nas Filipinas.

O combate em questão foi realizado no absoluto faixa-preta do evento, contra a local Maybelline Masuda. Com 20kg a menos que Cláudia, Maybelline se inscreveu na divisão de superpesados, assim como Cláudia, para ter com quem lutar no evento, e a vitória acachapante da brasileira veio em dose dupla.

Na primeira luta, na divisão de peso, Cláudia aplicou 63 a 0 e pegou no mata-leão. Depois, pelo absoluto, Maybilline voltou para lutar e receber, dessa vez, a pontuação de 91 a 0 antes de ser finalizada no armlock. (Veja no vídeo abaixo)

Parte da comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu comentou nas redes sociais sobre a pontuação ao longo dos dez minutos de luta, com abordagens diversas. Uns até apontaram como desrespeitosa a atitude de Cláudia. GRACIEMAG conversou com a campeã e esta explicou a situação real da luta.

“Na verdade eu lutei com muito cuidado”, disse Claudia do Val. “Eu poderia ter finalizado antes, mas a minha adversária era muito pequena, mais leve e se defendeu bem. Eu poderia ter aplicado mais força e vontade para pegar, mas eu não queria que ela se machucasse. Lutei de forma séria e sem desrespeitar ela, buscando uma forma técnica de finalizar a luta sem causar maiores danos. Evoluí na luta até pegar nas duas ocasiões, sem nenhuma lesão para nós duas.”

Lucas Pinheiro adjusts the choke. bjjmentality

The first competition of the year was a golden one for Lucas Pinheiro. With two fights and two submissions, the Manaus native became a four-time champion of the IBJJF’s Austin International Open, whose 2019 edition was held last weekend at the Round Rock Sports Center in Texas.

For this tourney, the roosterweight needed to move up in weight division, as there were no opponents signed up in his. Now the Atos fighter plans to fight two more Opens before the Pan, which is slated to take place in March in California.

“I had to move up to featherweight and felt the weight difference a bit,” he said. “My opponents were much heavier and stronger, but I felt really good in the competition and everything worked out in the end.”

In the final, against Brandon Walker, Lucas worked until achieving control from the top while Brandon played half-guard. With lots of pressure, Lucas managed to get his leg out, pass the lapel and choke at the very end, securing the title.
