Um veterano entre as jovens promessas da faixa-preta, Bruno Bastos não descansa. Em Dallas, o lutador já deu início à preparação para o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu, que acontece a partir do dia 27 de janeiro, em Lisboa. Confira o bate-papo da fera com o GRACIEMAG.com.

Como está a preparação para Lisboa, vai no adulto mesmo?

Vou lutar o Europeu e de adulto. De master é só no Internacional, e estarei no Europeu para o peso e absoluto. Fiquei um tempo descansando depois do Mundial Sem Kimono e estou de baterias carregadas! Foco bem a parte física, porque 2011 vai se puxado.

O que mais pretende lutar?

Tem o Europeu, depois a seletiva para o World Pro. Em seguida vem o Pan, o World Pro, Mundial e por aí vai… Também quero o ADCC, então tenho essa seletiva também. Por isso já treino Jiu-Jitsu com e sem kimono. A Claudinha Gadelha e o Daniel “Jacaré” estão aqui comigo, então me ajudam com as aulas para eu poder treinar.

Como analisa a sua temporada?

Lutei muita coisa em 2010 e só não medalhei no Pan, apesar de ter tido uma boa participação. Na maioria das competições consegui o ouro, então acho que foi um ano positivo.

Como se sente sendo, hoje, um veterano nos dojôs?

Já sou um veterano, não apenas no Jiu-Jitsu, mas na idade também! Tem aquela galera nova chegando, mas ainda me sinto lutando em condições iguais. Perdendo ou vencendo, são lutas duras. Nunca fui considerado “o cara”, mas estou sempre no bolo. Ninguém pode me descartar, porque tenho aquelas cartas por baixo da manga! O jogador experiente tem as suas malandragens e, se caírem nelas, perdem!

E a vida nos EUA, já se adaptou?

Esse foi o meu primeiro ano, oficialmente, e estou bem feliz. No início foi um pouco complicado para a minha família, mas já estamos adaptados. Para algumas coisas pessoais foi bem legal. Nunca havia tido carro ou casa só minha, por exemplo. Também estou podendo dar oportunidade à algumas pessoas, que vêm para cá treinar e lutar. No próximo ano vamos armar um camp grande antes do Mundial, então vai ser bem legal. Agradeço muito ao André Pederneiras, Wendell Alexander e Luisinho, que me deram oportunidade quando não tinha nem dinheiro para treinar. Estou aqui hoje graças a eles também. E, lógico, pela oportunidade que me deram aqui na Octagon MMA.

A veteran among the young up-and-coming black belts, Bruno Bastos never rests. In Dallas, Texas, the fighter has already gotten started preparing for the European Open, to take place January 27 in Lisbon, Portugal. Check out his conversation with GRACIEMAG.com.

How are preparations for Lisbon going, you going to compete in the adult division?

I’ll compete at the European as an adult. I only compete at master at the Rio International, and I’ll compete at the European at weight and open weight. I took a bit of rest after the No-Gi Worlds and my batteries are now charged! I’m focusing a lot on physical conditioning, as 2011 will be a busy year.

At what other tournaments do you plan to compete?

There’s the European Open, then the World Pro tryouts. After that comes the Pan, World Pro, Worlds, and so on… I also want to be at the ADCC, so there’s the qualifiers for that, too. That’s why I practice both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. Claudia Gadelha and Daniel “Jacaré” are here with me, so they help teach class so I can train.

What’s your assessment of the past season?

I competed at a lot of tourneys in 2010 and only didn’t win a medal at the Pan, although I did have a good showing. I managed gold at most of the competitions, so I feel it was a good year.

How do you feel these days, now you’re a veteran on the mat?

I’m a veteran not just in Jiu-Jitsu but in age as well! There’s the new crew coming in, but I still feel I’m competing on even terms. Win or lose, they’re all hard-fought matches. I was never considered “the man,” but I’ve always been in the mix. No one can count me out, because I always have those cards up my sleeve! An experienced fighter has his tricks, and if they fall for them, they lose!

How about life in the USA, have you adapted?

This was officially my first year and I’m really happy. Early on it was a bit rough on my family, but we’re all adapted now. It was really great in terms of some personal things. I’d never had a car or a house to myself before, for example. I’m also in a position to provide some people with opportunity, as they come here to train and compete. Next year we’ll put together a major training camp in the lead-up to the Worlds, so that will be really cool. I’m really thankful to André Pederneiras, Wendell Alexander, and Luisinho, who gave me opportunities when I didn’t have money to train. I’m here today thanks to them too. And, of course, I’m grateful for the opportunity they gave me here at Octagon MMA.

Aconteceu no último fim de semana, em Dallas, mais uma edição do Naga. O maior destaque foi JJ Homes, que venceu a categoria de peso e o absoluto sem kimono, tendo batido feras como Jorge Patino “Macaco”.

Também se destacaram os alunos de Bruno Bastos na Octagon MMA Claudia Gadelha e Daniel “Jacaré” Almeida.

Claudinha venceu a categoria de peso com e sem kimono, além do absoluto, com triunfos contra feras como a lutadora de MMA Jessica Aguilar, da ATT. Jacaré também venceu na categoria de peso com e sem pano, tendo ficado em terceiro no absoluto. Na disputa pelo bronze, o faixa-preta bateu a pedreira havaiana Baret Yoshida.

Jorge Macaco foi bem. Além do segundo posto no absoluto sem kimono, ficou em primeiro na categoria de peso.

Os campeões faturavam como prêmio cinturões  e espadas de samurai.

O evento ainda contou com a presença de ilustres como o bicampeão mundial absoluto de Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo Comprido, treinador de Brock Lesnar, e da faixa-preta Hillary Williams, como árbitra.

Another installment of the Naga grappling tournament went down last weekend in Dallas, Texas. The big standout was JJ Homes, who won his weight and absolute no-gi divisions, having beaten the likes of Jorge “Macaco” Patino.

Also putting in good performances were Bruno Bastos’s students at Octagon MMA Claudia Gadelha and Daniel “Jacaré” Almeida.

Claudia won both her weight division and the no-gi division as well as the absolute, with wins over athletes of the caliber of ATT MMA fighter Jessica Aguilar. Jacaré too won his weight division and the no-gi division, but took third in the absolute. In the bronze-medal dispute the black belt beat Hawaiian savant Baret Yoshida.

Jorge Macaco did well, taking second in the absolute no-gi category and first in his weight division.

The champions were awarded belts and samurai swords.

Also in attendance were such illustrious figures as Brock Lesnar’s Jiu-Jitsu coach and two-time absolute world champion Rodrigo Comprido and black belt Hillary Williams as referee.
