No clássico duelo Jiu-Jitsu x luta livre, um confronto épico – de pura técnica e respeito entre os atletas – é bem pouco lembrado. Injustamente, por sinal.

A disputa se deu em 17 de janeiro de 2001, no ginásio da AABB no Rio, de frente para a lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. O palco foi a seletiva para o ADCC, e os duelistas eram dois fenomenais finalizadores: Antonio “Nino” Schembri e Alexandre Ferreira, o Cacareco, astro formado nos tatames da luta-livre.

Com suas costeletas copiadas do ídolo Elvis Presley, Nino chegou à final da divisão até 88kg quase de paraquedas. Paulão Filho era o atleta favorito na divisão, mas quebrou a mão num vale-tudo e Nino foi convidado às pressas.

Em sua primeira luta, o lutador da Gracie Barra finalizou rápido no braço. Na segunda, tomou um sufoco de Leopoldo Serão, quando o aluno de Eugênio Tadeu arrochou uma chave de braço ao melhor estilo Sakuraba. Nino defendeu-se e capturou Leopoldo num triângulo.

Do outro lado, Cacareco distribuía sua chave kimura quase indefensável, técnica que aplicava ao passar a guarda e dar o bote no braço rival. Foi o golpe que usou duas vezes, inclusive na semifinal contra Fernando Paradeda.

Ao se encararem para a luta decisiva, de 20 minutos, ficou evidente a diferença de porte, e os quase dez quilos que os separavam. Nino batera 80kg no dia anterior, enquanto Cacareco pesou no limite da categoria 88kg.

A luta começou e Nino partiu com tudo para aplicar suas chaves omoplatas exóticas e botes no triângulo. Só que, nas regras do ADCC, puxar para a guarda sempre resultou em ponto negativo.

Assim, Cacareco abriu 3 a 0, após três puxadas de Nino. E tratou de administrar, estratégico como de hábito.

Já no finzinho da luta, Nino arriscou tudo, explodiu por baixo, catou as pernas de Cacareco e o derrubou. Enquanto o oponente se recuperava da surpresa, Nino passou sua guarda e virou o placar em 5 a 3, para explosão geral do ginásio:

– Eu, eu, eu, o Elvis não morreu!

No ADCC 2001, nas quartas de final, a chave omoplata de Nino Schembri, contra Alexander “Sasha” Savko, tornaria-se famosa entre os xeques de Abu Dhabi.

“Quando a luta acabou”, narraria Schembri, “olhei para o mestre Carlson e ele estava chorando na arquibancada. Ele veio falar comigo que a vitória tinha feito ele se lembrar da sua luta contra o Waldemar Santana, quando ele ficou por baixo o tempo inteiro e no fim conseguiu inverter e ganhar”.

Para Carlson, Nino demonstrara mais uma vez que a técnica aliada à garra podem bater a força. “Foi uma grande vitória do Jiu-Jitsu que vimos aqui. O Cacareco era dez vezes mais forte, e o Nino usou sua destreza para superá-lo. Ele merece todos os elogios, é disparado o melhor lutador deste torneio. E olha que para vencer o Cacareco tem que ser realmente muito bom, pois o cara é duríssimo”.

An experienced, creative BJJ teacher, Nino Schembri likes studying the minutiae of ground positions old and new. From all that research and testing, every so often he comes up with something novel. This time it’s the labyrinth guard.

Graciemag asked him for an exclusive video, and he delivered with this one. After locking his opponent’s arm under the leg, Nino has a tight armbar at his disposal, as well as some opportunities to sweep. On top, the armbar remains alive, and the game is wide open for him to work with an advantage.

A terceira edição da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, marcada para os dias 18 e 19 de outubro, vai reunir dois cultuados veteranos do esporte numa superluta que promete em termos de técnica. A luta entre Vitor Shaolin e Nino Schembri será com kimono, sob as regras da IBJJF, e terá a duração de 15 minutos.

Professor de Jiu-Jitsu em sua academia em Lawndale, na Califórnia, Nino Schembri foi sincero ao ser questionado sobre sua volta aos tatames na superluta da Jiu-Jitsu Expo.

“Eu estava aposentado. Quando fui convocado para lutar, disse não. Mas eles disseram que meu oponente seria o Vitor Shaolin e aí pensei, bem, talvez seja a hora de voltar”, disse Nino em conversa com GRACIEMAG.

Enquanto isso, em Nova York, Shaolin teve reação semelhante quando recebeu o convite para vestir o kimono novamente.

“Na década de 1990, quase lutamos em um campeonato, então pensei que poderia ser uma ótima luta para quem gosta de Jiu-Jitsu. Nino foi um dos caras mais criativos do nosso esporte. Sempre gostei do seu jogo. Além disso, ele é um cara legal”, elogiou Shaolin.

Schembri também apontou as principais qualidades do faixa-preta da Nova União.

“Ele tem um jogo para frente, assim como eu. Vitor permite que o jogo flua por cima ou por baixo. Espero uma luta bastante movimentada em 15 minutos. É provável que alguém vá ser finalizado e eu espero que não seja eu”, brincou Nino.

Nino reconhece que a rotina diária de ensino que ambos os lutadores têm todos os dias tornam as coisas mais complicadas.

“É difícil dar aulas e treinar duro, mas conseguimos isso. Vou fazer o que sempre fiz, que é tentar impor o meu jogo, ser explosivo e usar todas as minhas armas”, encerra o faixa-preta de Carlos Gracie Jr.

“I was retired! When the WJJE called me and offered to fight, I said no! But then they said the opponent would be Vitor Shaolin and I tought, well, maybe that’s worthy coming back!”

Meanwhile, in New York City, Shaolin had a similar reaction when he got the call.

“In the 90’s when never got to fight, so I thought this could be a good fight for those who like Jiu-Jitsu.”

Both icons in BJJ, Shaolin and Nino have nothing but words of praise for each other.

“Nino was one of the most creative competitors in our time. I always liked his game. On top of that, he is also a really nice guy!” said Shaolin.

Schembri, in his turn, also had no problems pointing out Shaolin’s main qualities.

“He has a forward game, just like mine. He allows the game to flow both on top and on the bottom. I expect a match without stalling for the entire 15 minutes. It is likely that someone will get submitted and I hope it’s not me.”

In closing, both dared to say why they think they will win the match.

“I hope to win because I’m training hard and  also because I think I am being able to implement in training all that I want to do during the match,” analyzed Shaolin.

Nino recognizes that the daily routine of teaching and training that both fighters have to go through makes things harder.

“It is tough to teach classes and train tough, but we manage it. I’ll do what I always did which is to try to impose my game, be explosive and use all my guns hoping to catch him with something,” said Nino.

The fight between Nino Schembri and Vitor Shaolin takes place at the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, October 18-19, at the Long Beach Convention Center.

Nino Schembri awarded his fifth degree by Roberto Gordo

Black belt Nino “Elvis” Schembri received the fifth degree last week.

The stripe was given out by Roberto “Gordo”Correa at Nino’s academy in California.

Schembri wrote about the occasion on his Facebook account: “Very special day at the academy! After 19 years with my black belt, I’m very honored to get my fifth degree from Master Gordo! I will never forget, today is also the date of Elvis Presley’s death, 37 years without the King! Thank you Gordo!”

Celebrate with one of the most exciting Jiu-jitsu players of all times watching one of his greatest moments.

On April 27, 2000, Nino fought Fernando Margarida in a match that was part of Rio de Janeiro vs. São Paulo challenge, in Brazil.

The third edition of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, scheduled for the next October 18-19, will bring together two revered veterans of the sport on a full technical superfight.

Notorious Nova Uniao Professor, holding the Shooto belt in 2000, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro faces Antonio “Nino” Schembri, the creator of the gogoplata and former Pride fighter, in the fair organized by Renzo Gracie in California.

Shaolin and Nino, both Jiu-Jitsu coaches in the USA nowadays, lived their best years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, fighting in tournaments such as the Brazilian Nationals, ADCC and the Worlds.

The fight between the black belts from Dede Pederneiras and Carlos Gracie Junior will be with the kimono, under the rules of the IBJJF, and will run for 15 minutes. The supermatches are all scheduled for Saturday, October 18.

The Expo 2014 will be in Long Beach, at the Long Beach Convention Center, where the event was held in its first two years.

Among the attractions this year, is the realization of the IBJJF Pro League, a professional tournament, that will pay $ 5,000 to each champion at black belt.

Shaolin e Nino, ambos hoje treinadores nos EUA, viveram seus melhores anos no fim da década de 1990 e início da de 2000, em torneios como o Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu, o Mundial e o ADCC.

A luta entre o faixa-preta de Dedé Pederneiras e o de Carlos Gracie Junior será com o kimono, sob as regras da IBJJF, e terá a duração de 15 minutos. As superlutas estão todas programadas para o sábado 18 de outubro.

A Expo de 2014 será em Long Beach, nas dependências do confortável Long Beach Convention Center, sede do evento nos dois primeiros anos.

Entre as atrações deste ano, está a realização da IBJJF Pro League, torneio profissional que vai pagar 5 mil dólares a cada campeão na faixa-preta.
