Clark Gracie’s lesson from New York Open

Clark Gracie may not have made it to the top of the podium at the New York Open last Saturday, but he did demonstrate a quality common to Jiu-Jitsu players: he never gave up. And there’s another lesson that could also apply in this case: “Try to finish what you started.”

As we’re taught in Jiu-Jitsu on a daily basis, a black belt is a white belt who never gave up. And that’s what the member of the family with the most gentle-art tradition did in sinking an omoplata on Ken Primola and not abandoning the hold until he got what he wanted, despite the hardships. The Nat Holman Gymnasium at City College hosted some of the top Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the United States, as they took to competition at the IBJJF New York Open this Saturday. The highlight of the event was Gracie Barra’s Otávio Sousa, who won the middleweight and absolute divisions by beating, respectively, Clark Gracie and Rafael Formiga, the absolute champion from the previous year.

Further standouts were GFTeam duo Denílson Pimenta and Ítalo Lins, winners of the featherweight and lightweight divisions, respectively. Daniel Beleza took gold in the light featherweight division. Further champions of the adult black belt divisions were medium heavyweight champ Antonio Antonioli, heavyweight gold medalist Alexandre Henrique, super heavyweight winner Diego Pereira de Santana and ultra heavyweight kingpin Paulo Victor Velozo.

In the overall team standings, Alliance took top spot, followed by Lloyd Irvin and Renzo Gracie.

Nova York, dizem, é onde tudo acontece. Por lá, uma cidade do mundo, o visitante pode degustar costumes e especiarias de todo o planeta. No último sábado, isso valeu, especialmente, levando-se em consideração o Jiu-Jitsu. E Otavio Sousa se sagrou como rei nas disputas do NY Open, campeão do peso e do absoluto no evento da IBJJF.

A lição de Clark Gracie no New York Open

Clark Gracie pode não ter subido no lugar mais alto do pódio do New York Open de Jiu-Jitsu, no último sábado, mas mostrou uma das qualidades do Jiu-Jitsu: nunca desistir. Outro ensinamento também pode ser aplicado nesse confere: “Procure terminar o que você começou”.

Como o Jiu-Jitsu nos ensina dia a dia, o faixa-preta é um faixa-branca que nunca desistiu. E foi assim que o membro da família mais tradicional da arte suave encaixou um omoplata em Ken Primola e não abandonou o golpe apesar das dificuldades, até chegar onde queria. Otávio Sousa é o cara no New York Open de Jiu-Jitsu

O Nat Holman Gymnasium City College recebeu alguns dos melhores lutadores dos EUA neste sábado, nas disputas do New York Open, mais um evento com o selo de qualidade da IBJJF. O destaque ficou por conta da fera da Gracie Barra Otávio Sousa, vencedor da categoria de peso (médio) e do absoluto ao bater, respectivamente, Clark Gracie e Rafael Formiga, campeão do aberto na última edição do evento.

Também foi bem a dupla da GFTeam com Denílson Pimenta, campeão no pena, e Ítalo Lins no leve. O ouro no pluma foi para Daniel Beleza. Outros campeões da faixa-preta no adulto foram Antonio Antonioli (meio-pesado), Alexandre Henrique (pesado), Diego Pereira de Santana (superpesado) e Paulo Victor Velozo (pesadíssimo).

Entre as academias, o primeiro posto foi para a Alliance, seguida pela Lloyd Irvin e Renzo Gracie.
