João Miyao attacks.

Fighting at the Orlando Open, held early this month in Florida, João Miyao displayed a versatile game in order to win gold in the light featherweight division.

In the final against Suraj Budhram, Miyao resorted to the best of his technique both on top and on the bottom. In the guard, he swept with the use of the lapels and baffled his opponent with his spins. On top, he defended against the attacks coming in, performed transitions to evolve into superior positions, and at the end, attacked the back and finished via choke.

Em ação no Orlando Open de Jiu-Jitsu, realizado no início deste mês de agosto, na Flórida, o faixa-preta João Miyao mostrou um jogo versátil para conquistar o ouro peso-pluma.

Na finalíssima, contra Suraj Budhram, João mostrou toda sua técnica, tanto por baixo quanto por cima. Na guarda, raspou com uso das lapelas e confundiu o adversário com seus giros. Por cima, defendeu os ataques, aplicou transições para evoluir em posições superiores e, no fim das contas, atacou as costas e finalizou no estrangulamento.

Eyeing the under-76kg title from Spyder Invitational, which reaches its quarterfinal stage this Saturday, this week Paulo Miyao sharpened his elastic guard in a day of training in Seoul, South Korea.

Graciemag was present and paying attention, so we caught on camera the best part of the session, which also included a few other athletes that will be fighting tomorrow.

Day 1 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour’s Abu Dhabi leg, held January 12, more than delivered the thrills the crowd on the stands of the Mubadala Arena was expecting to feel. Some of the top black belts in the world competed for their spots in the finals. The gold medal matches take place this Saturday, when competitors will give their best for their share of over US$ 190,000 in prizes. Here’s how the adult black belt division played out this Friday.

Female Brown/Black Belt

49kg – Mayssa Caldas beat Flavia Quintareli twice to secure the gold medal in the division. In the second match, Mayssa was able to take Flavia’s back to finish with a choke.

55kg – Amanda Nogueira will defend her crown against Ariadne de Oliveira. Nogueira made it to the final with a decision win over Amal Amjahid, while Ariadne finished Ariane Guarnier with a loop choke.

62kg – Charlotte von Baumgarten beat Larissa Paes 5-0 to meet Nadia Melo in the final this Saturday.

90kg – Samantha Cook put pressure on Jessica de Andrade to win by submission and meet Thamara Silva in the final. Thamara beat Barbara Burgarelle in the other semifinal.

Male Black Belt

56kg – In two matches, José Lima beat João Carlos Kuraoka 3-2 on advantages to reach the final and meet Massaki Todokoro, who beat Jorge Nakamura 2-0 on points in the other semifinal.

62kg – Both João Miyao and Hiago George finished Jarrah Alhazza in the round robin bracket. Miyao and George will fight for the gold medal this Saturday.

69kg – Paulo Miyao fought once to reach the final, finishing Daniel Vieira with a choke from the back. He’ll meet Tiago Bravo, who finished Abdullah Nabas and then beat Victor Otoniel 2-0 in the semifinal.

77kg – In the most crowded division, Australia’s Lachlan Gilles and Brazil’s Flavio Vianna will fight for gold this Saturday. Gilles made it to the final with a 4-0 win over Raphael Mello and a 3-0 win on advantages over Julio Junior. Vianna reached the gold medal match with a W.O. win over Mohammed Al Qubaisi and 1-0 on advantages over Burak Sarman.

85kg – Isaque Bahiense will defend his title, won in Rio, against Charles Negromonte. Isaque fought twice to reach another final. He finished Nino Moreira and then beat Igor Sousa 2-0 in a semifinal. Negromonte finished Luis Venturino and then beat Marcos Costa 3-0.

94kg – Adam Wardzinki is going strong for the title. He finished both his opponents this Friday to reach the final. First he caught André Reis with a choke and then he took Basel Fanous’s back to get the tap. On the other side of the bracket, Helton Junior beat Lucas Figueiredo and then outscored Paulo Pinto 2-0 in the semifinal.

110kg – Igor Silva fought once to finish Pablo Aragão with a triangle choke and meet Mauricio Lima in the final. Lima finished Luis Henrique Nepomuceno on his way to the gold medal match.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour – Abu Dhabi returns this Saturday, at 11 a.m. (UAE time). The black belt finals will kick off in the afternoon.

Muitas emoções e grandes duelos de Jiu-Jitsu rolaram nesta sexta-feira, dia 12, na capital dos Emirados Árabes, em mais uma edição do Grand Slam da UAEJJ, desta vez em sua terra natal, Abu Dhabi.

Atletas do mundo inteiro chegaram para disputar os valiosos pontos no ranking e a recompensa ficou para os fãs de Jiu-Jitsu que prestigiaram os combates e a briga por mais de 190 mil dólares em prêmios.

Na divisão de faixa-preta, os craques da arte suave expuseram o seu melhor na Mubadala Arena, e foram definidos os finalistas que voltam amanhã, dia 15, para lutar pelo ouro. Confira abaixo!

Masculino Preta

56kg – José Carlos “Cocó” venceu João Kuraoka por 3 a 2 nas vantagens para garantir sua vaga na final contra Massaki Todokoro, que venceu Jorge Nakamura por 2 a 0 nos pontos na outra semifinal.

62kg – João Miyao e Hiago George finalizaram Jarrah Alhazza na chave de três para ficaram garantidos na disputa de ouro entre companheiros de equipe.

69kg – Paulo MIyao fez apenas uma luta para ficar com a vaga na final, ao finalizar Daniel Vieira pelas costas. Ele vai encarar Tiago Bravo pelo título, este que finalizou Abdullah Nabas e depois bateu Victor Otoniel por 2 a 0 no caminho até a finalíssima.

77kg – Na divisão mais movimentada, o australiano Lachlan Gilles e o brasileiro Flavio Vianna vão lutar pelo ouro neste sábado. Gilles chegou à final com uma vitória por 4 a 0  nos pontos sobre Raphael Mello e 3 a 0 nas vantagens sobre Julio Junior. Vianna garantiu a vaga com vitória por WO sobre Mohammed Al Qubaisi e 1 a 0 nas vantagens sobre o Burak Sarman.

85kg – Isaque Bahiense defenderá seu título conquistado no Rio contra Charles Negromonte. Isaque lutou duas vezes para chegar na final. Ele finalizou Nino Moreira e depois venceu Igor Sousa por 2 a 0 na semifinal. Já Negromonte finalizou Luis Venturino e depois venceu Marcos Costa por 3 a 0 nos pontos.

94kg – Adam Wardzinski chega na final com pressão máxima ao finalizar André Reis e Basel Fanous no caminho até a disputa do ouro. Do outro lado, Helton Junior venceu Lucas Figueiredo e Paulo Pinto para garantir a vaga na final.

110 kg – Igor Silva lutou uma vez para chegar na final,  ao pegar Pablo Aragão no triângulo. Ele vai encarar Mauricio Lima na final, este que finalizou Luis Henrique Nepomuceno na semifinal.

Feminino Marrom/Preta

49kg – Mayssa Caldas bateu Flavia Quintareli duas vezes para garantir a medalha de ouro na divisão. Na segunda partida, Mayssa conseguiu pegar as costas de Flavia e finalizar no estrangulamento.

55kg – Amanda Nogueira defenderá sua coroa contra Ariadne de Oliveira. Nogueira chegou à final com uma vitória na decisão sobre Amal Amjahid, enquanto Ariadne finalizou Ariane Guarnier com um estrangulamento rodado.

62kg – Charlotte Von Baumgarten venceu Larissa Paes por 5 a 0 para encarar Nadia Melo na final de sábado.

90kg – Samantha Cook pressionou Jessica Andrade para finalizar e encarar Thamara Silva na final.

After months of rumors, the suspicion of drug use by Paulo Miyao has proven true. A world champion in 2016, the Cicero Costha representative was tested following the Worlds by the USADA.

Almost a year later, the result has now reached the public, with information revealed by Miyao himself on social media. In the messages he apologizes, states that he was caught, and says he is now suspended for two years.

Miyao is likely going to lose his 2016 light featherweight title. Runner-up Ary Farias (Atos JJ) would then become champion belatedly.

The USADA has not yet made an official statement about the case, so we don’t know all the details. Other BJJ athletes who failed tests by the agency in the past include Gabi Garcia, Braulio Estima, Felipe Preguiça and Léo Nogueira.

Depois de muitos rumores sobre o caso ao longo de meses, o suposto doping de Paulo Miyao veio à tona. Campeão mundial em 2016, o atleta da Cicero Costha foi testado pós-título pela USADA, agência antidoping americana, e informações internas indicavam que Paulo havia caído na “malha fina.”

Quase um ano depois, inclusive com a proximidade da edição de 2017 do Mundial, a confirmação do doping chegou ao conhecimento público, com informações dadas pelo próprio atleta, em suas redes sociais. Na mensagem, Paulo se desculpa e afirma ter sido pego no exame, ao mesmo tempo em que assume toda responsabilidade pelo ocorrido e revela o tempo de gancho: dois anos.

Com a punição, Paulo Miyao deve perder o título que conquistou no Mundial de 2016. O segundo colocado, Ary Farias (Atos JJ), deve herdar o primeiro lugar no peso-pluma.

A USADA ainda não se pronunciou oficialmente sobre o caso, portanto não se sabe ainda a circunstância da falha ou a substância proibida que foi encontrada no exame. Outros atletas já notificados pela agência foram Gabi Garcia, Braulio Estima, Felipe Preguiça e Léo Nogueira.

Com duelos com e sem kimono, o torneio reuniu centenas de atletas em busca do ouro internacional, e vários faixas-pretas conhecidos estavam na disputa.

No faixa-preta de kimono, Marcos Tinoco e Matheus Diniz fecharam o absoluto para a equipe Alliance. Tinoco e Diniz, campeões no peso meio-pesado e pesado, respectivamente, venceram Paulo Miyao e Felipinho Cesar na semi-finais para garantirem juntos a final do aberto. No absoluto feminino, melhor para Aarae Alexander (Lloyd Irvin), que venceu Samantha Faulhaber (Gracie Humaitá) e mordeu o título.

Outros destaques na disputa de kimono foram a dobradinha de Paulo e João Miyao com o título nas divisões pluma e pena, e para a atuação de Kurt Pellegrino, ex-atleta do UFC e faixa-preta de Marcelinho Garcia, que faturou o título peso pesado no Master 2.

Na disputa sem kimono, Matheus Diniz voltou a brilhar. Ele encarou Murilo Santana na final do absoluto, e conseguiu impor o seu jogo para sair com a vitória. Confira no vídeo abaixo.
