They are coming from Sao Paulo to the world. Besides Murilo Santana, the youngsters João and Paulo Miyao (Cicero Costha) will embark on a new journey in their careers in Jiu-Jitsu. The destination is the cosmopolitan New York City.

The black belt brothers will now train at Unity, a gym located on the east side of Manhattan.

“They (the Miyaos) will only train and I’ll teach classes. João and Paulo will live in New York as athletes and train all day, and follow the classes taught by me. Luiza Monteiro will also live in New York to train for tournaments. For the IBJJF Pan Championship, Leandro Lo already wants to start a camp in NY too. It will be a great time training. Yago Souza, a brown belt from Cicero Costha will also be here,” said Murilo Santana.

“It is important to reinforce that no one is trading teams. The Miyaos will fight for Cicero (Costha) and I will compete for Barbosa, but using the patch from Unity Jiu-Jitsu as well,” said Murilo.

The Rio BJJ Pro has assembled his cast for a tight race in the Tijuca Tennis Club in Rio this weekend, November 15th and 16th. Besides the beautiful medals, the IBJJF will give money prize. The event will distribute over 40 thousand Brazilian Reais to the winners. Registration ended Monday.

Several renowned black belts are confirmed in the male, as the brothers Paul0 and João Miyao (Cicero Costha), Léo Saggioro (BTT), Juan Kamezawa (Alliance), Vinicius Marinho (GFTeam), Claudio Caloquinha (GB), Gabriel Rollo (Checkmate), Dimitrius Souza (Alliance), Abraham Marte (Yamasaki) and Cassio Francis (GB).

The black belts Bia Mesquita (Gracie Humaita), Gabi Garcia (Alliance) and Fernanda Mazzelli (Striker) are among the top female stars.

How is his technique?

It’s fast, but it’s full of technique. In less than 50s Renzo and Paulo teach a sweep from the De La Riva guard and an armbar to be used when the opponent goes on all fours.

Our cameras went inside the palace of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

There, we witnessed a no-gi training session that involved the Sheikh, Renzo Gracie and the Miyao Bros, among others.

We’re not allowed to film for long, but what we got was serious good stuff.

After the training session, Renzo talked about the brothers: “Those kids have a way to find your back from everywhere. If they manage to place their heads under your hips, it’s over.”

Paulo and João Miyao now black belts

The Miyaos are conquering the world with their Jiu-Jitsu. The Andirá, Paraná, Brazil-born boys moved to São Paulo because they were certain they wanted to compete professionally and grow in the gentle art. Away from family and living out of Cícero Costha’s gym for the past four years, the 22-year-olds picked up their black belts this week and, to them, this is just the beginning.

GRACIEMAG: After six years of hard work, how does it feel to get the black belt?

MIYAOS: We are very happy. In truth, it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s black. We’ll continue doing our best to be champions and reach the summit of the sport. We’ve been training a lot. It’s been four years here with Cícero Costha, away from our family, but we’re firm in our pursuit of our goals. We expect the same success we’ve had at the other belts. We want to win a lot of Worlds at black belt.

You guys are light athletes who often fight much heavier opponents. How does it feel to beat the big guys?

We’re used to it. Some lightweights are much tougher than most heavyweights. But we also look critically at our losses. A heavyweight’s weight is no excuse for losing to him.

You just arrived in Brazil after the World Championships and are already fighting the Nationals in São Paulo. How’s training going?

We had no injuries at the Worlds, so we’re training pretty normally for the Nationals. Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a sport or a job; it’s something we enjoy doing day in, day out, and since we live here in the gym, we train all day.

What’s your inspiration?

We like Leandro Lo’s style, the Mendes brothers and we draw a lot of inspiration from master Cícero.

Have you fought each other?

No. We don’t have the habit of competing against each other or really anyone on our team. Also master vs. student doesn’t seem cool, it’s just how we feel about it. If we were matched up against each other, one would probably forfeit and make way for the other.

Paulo and João Miyao now black belts

Idols of lightweights, guard players and admirers of good Jiu-Jitsu, brothers Paulo and João Miyao were graduated to a highly deserved level of black belt on Monday, June 24, at the Cicero Costha academy in São Paulo.

Paulo and João gained fame with their sweeps and playing the berimbolo on opponents at championships around the world. At the last World Championship in Long Beach, they closed out the brown belt light-featherweight division. Paulo did one better and was also crowned in the absolute, defeating the dominant Keenan Cornelius.

With the brothers’ victories at this year’s European Open, Pan, Brasileiro and Worlds, Professor Cicero decided to give the new belts.

“They will have great fights as black belts. João and Paulo will debut in the new division next Saturday in São Paulo, when we will be able to see if they are ready for it,” explained Costha, the Miyaos’ Professor since blue belt. “Last year, Paulo was graduated to brown belt by me before João and now we decided to have their promotions at the same time.

“I’m very happy with that. They are two very skilled kids that train a lot and have a lot of determination. They came from the countryside and they are doing great in what they like to do the most. Now, they travel the world thanks to Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a honor to have them here with us.”

Paulo Miyao talked about his arrival at black belt: “For real, I’m not anxious to compete in the new rank at all. I’ll try to do my best, as usual.”

In Pan 2013, late March in Irvine, Calif., the absolute brown belt king Keeenan Cornelius showed against the skittish brothers Paul and John Miyao why he is one of the hottest names in modern Jiu-Jitsu.

The phenomenon, who now trains with Andre Galvao, gave a lecture on cleverness and technical intelligence to override the berimbolos from the little brothers in absolute fights.

First, Keenan submitted João with an armbar. Then, in the final, he defeated Paul by one advantage to keep the gold. Check it out!
