Matt Brown defeated Mike Swick by knockout in the second round of their main card bout at UFC on FOX 5 in Seattle on Saturday night.

Brown landed a land hand, followed by a right cross, that sent Swick collapsing to the ground at 2:31 of the second frame.

Brown pressed his opponent early on, getting Swick to the ground. He attempted a choke, but Swick was able to pull out and began to work in guard.

Brown then caught his opponent in a triangle, and Swick worked to prevent the submission by putting his feet over Brown’s neck. Swick escaped and the two transitioned back to the feet before the round’s time expired.

Round 2 started soon before Brown and Swick began engaging in a clinch. Swick landed some knees, while Brown landed elbows. But it was Brown’s left hand that sent Swick falling backwards, ending the fight by knockout.

Brown improves his record to 16-11, and is the owner of a four-fight winning streak, undefeated in 2012. Swick loses his first fight since making his return to the UFC from illness.

Aconteceu no último sábado, no CT dos irmãos Nogueira, no Rio de Janeiro, mais uma edição do Face to Face, evento organizado por Alex Gazé. Além dos combates, o evento contou com a presença de grandes feras da luta como os lutadores do UFC Junior Cigano e Mike Swick.

Nas lutas mais aguardadas, Eder Jones (Minotauro Team) venceu Alberto do Nascimento por nocaute, Toninho Furia (BTT) bateu Igor Chatubinha por decisão e o russo treinado por Roberto Gordo Igor Vafilyew nocauteou Anderson de Paula.

Against Mike Swick on Saturday at UFC 109, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt consolidated himself once and for all as one of the promises of the welterweight division, now dominated by Georges St.-Pierre. After scoring a knockdown, he went for the finish, formalized with a tight arm triangle.

“I improved my counter-attack a lot. I knew he was a very aggressive fighter and I waited for the right moment to attack. I had been preparing for a very tough opponent in the division, who was supposed to be Josh Koscheck, so not much had changed. A little did in terms of style, reach, but I trained the same way,” he said at the post-UFC press conference.

For the challenge, the fighter had the support of Anderson Silva’s team and Nova União, news published first hand by GRACIEMAG.com.

“I always try to improve myself and improve training. I always try to learn more and find the right people for it. I have to improve in all areas not to leave holes in my game.”

Before getting the fight-defining submission hold, Thiago managed a knockdown on Swick. He could have carried on striking his downed opponent, but opted for the arm triangle.

“I knew the likelihood of finishing him was greater than knocking him out. He could have tied me up there so I went straight for the submission.”

MMA provides an energy unlike any other,” Paulo Thiago.

Always queried about his being a police man on the elite BOPE force, in Brasilia, the fighter commented on his professions.

“I’m happy with my two professions, but, of course, MMA is more exciting. It gives me energy like no other in the world. I would choose to be a fighter for the dream I’ve had since childhood of being champion, as well as for the financial side, a chance to provide my family with greater comfort,” he says in finishing..

Contra Mike Swick, neste sábado, no UFC 109, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu se consolidou de vez como um dos mais promissores na categoria meio-médio, hoje dominada por Georges St. Pierre. Depois de aplicar um knockdown, partiu para a finalização, sacramentada num justo triângulo de braço.

“Melhorei bastante o contra-ataque. Sabia que ele era um lutador bastante agressivo e esperei o momento certo de atacar. Vinha me preparando para um oponente muito duro dessa categoria, que é o Josh Koscheck, então não mudou muita coisa. Um pouco no estilo de jogo, na envergadura, mas o treinamento foi feito da mesma forma”, disse na conferência de imprensa do UFC.

Para o desafio, o lutador contou com o apoio da equipe de Anderson Silva e da Nova União, notícia publicada em primeira mão no GRACIEMAG.com. 

“Procuro sempre me aperfeiçoar e melhorar o treinamento. Quero sempre aprender mais e procuro as pessoas certas para isso. Tenho que me aperfeiçoar em todas as áreas para não deixar furo nas lutas.” 

Antes de finalizar, Thiago aplicou um belo knockdown em Swick. Poderia continuar socando o adversário ao chão, mas preferiu ir com tudo para o triângulo de braço. 

“Sabia que a probabilidade de finalizar era maior que a de nocautear. Ele poderia travar o jogo ali e parti logo para a finalização.” 

O MMA proporciona uma energia que não existe igual”, Paulo Thiago.

Sempre questionado sobre o fato de ser policial do BOPE, em Brasília, o lutador também comentou sobre as profissões.    

“Fico feliz nas minhas duas profissões, mas, com certeza, o MMA é a mais emocionante. Me proporciona uma energia que não existe igual no mundo. Escolheria ser lutador pelo sonho que tenho desde criança, de ser campeão, além da parte financeira, uma possibilidade de dar conforto maior à minha família”, finaliza.

Lutador com diversos títulos no Jiu-Jitsu esportivo e em competições como o ADCC (em 2007), Demian Maia encara Dan Miller, que também sabe lutar no chão, já que recebeu recentemente a faixa-preta.

“Está tudo ótimo. Já estou aqui em Vegas e treinei hoje. Estou preparado para a luta e faltam apenas os últimos ajustes. Talvez o Dan Miller seja o cara mais perigoso que já enfrentei no chão”, comenta Demian ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Outro faixa-preta, Paulo Thiago contou com ajuda inestimável para melhorar outro quesito, a trocação. O lutador esteve no Rio de Janeiro e treinou com ninguém menos que Anderson Silva para encarar Mike Swick, o que o GRACIEMAG.com noticiou em primeira mão (ver aqui).

“Ter a oportunidade de treinar com o Anderson foi um privilégio. Na última edição da revista do UFC ele foi considerado o melhor lutador de MMA de todos os tempos. Ele realmente acrescentou muito ao meu aprendizado e eu fiz alguns ajustes no jogo e no treinamento”, diz Paulo no site do UFC.

Rolles Gracie terá a dura missão de representar a família difurosa do esporte e criadora do Ultimate desde que Royce lutou pela última vez na organização. Para isso, além da preparação com o primo Renzo, buscou para o desafio contra Joey Beltran o apoio de um dos maiores treinadores de MMA da atualidade, Greg Jackson.

“Antes de tudo, ele é um cara legal. Mas eu gosto de ir lá para treinar, porque os caras que eu vou lutar são exclusivamente lutadores de MMA. Em Nova York, tenho um grande treino com o Renzo e todos os meus parceiros, mas eles são muito mais caras do Jiu-Jitsu e aceitam o jogo de chão. Eles não estão preocupados em ir para o chão comigo, e eu não acho que isso vai acontecer quando eu pisar no Octagon. Acho que vão tentar evitar o jogo de chão, e foi ao lado de atletas com esse estilo que pude treinar na academia do Jackson”, explica Rolles.

Outro grande finalizador no evento é Ronys Torres. A fera de Manacapuru, no Amazonas, terá pela frente um inimigo da arte suave: Melvin Guillard.

“A coisa boa sobre caras do Jiu-Jitsu é que eles me dão a chance de conseguir o bônus pelo nocaute da noite. Este é o jeito que entrarei na próxima luta. Serei explosivo e vou descarregar tudo o que tenho sobre esse cara”, adiantou Melvin Guillard.

Ronys prontamente responde: “Treino Jiu-Jitsu desde 1999. Não posso esperar que ele me derrube e use o que aprendeu, assim como ele não pode esperar que eu troque com um excelente muay thai e boxe. É claro que é MMA e estou pronto em pé e no chão, mas não acredito que ele vá lutar comigo no solo. Não dá para aprender Jiu-Jitsu em apenas seis meses. Ele está vindo de derrotas e um novo resultado negativo não é a sua intenção. Por disso, acho que eles casaram essa luta, um novato na organização contra um cara que necessita vencer. Ele vai tentar me nocautear, sei disso, mas fiz o que tinha que ser feito. Agora é hora de esperar pelo momento do show.”

Outro renomado faixa-preta em ação será o ex-campeão do UFC Matt Serra, um dos primeiros a receber a graduação máxima de Renzo Gracie nos EUA.

A ground specialist who has won such tournaments at the pinnacle of the sport grappling as the ADCC, Demian Maia faces Dan Miller, who is no slouch on the ground either, having recently been promoted to black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

“Everything is great. I’m already here and I trained today. I’m prepared for the fight and all that’s missing are some final adjustments. Dan Miller may well be the most dangerous guy I’ve faced ground,” said Demian to GRACIEMAG.com.

Another black belt, Paulo Thiago had help in improving another variable, his striking. The fighter was in Rio de Janeiro training with none other than Anderson Silva to prepare for Mike Swick, which GRACIEMAG.com reported first hand (see here).

“To have the opportunity to train with Anderson was a privilege for me. In the latest issue of UFC magazine he was voted best MMA fighter of all time. He really added a lot to my learning and I made some adjustments to my game and in training,” he told the UFC website.

Rolles Gracie will have the tough task of representing the family that has represented the Gentle Art in the UFC since Royce Gracie first fought for the organization. Thus, besides the prep-work he has undergone with Renzo Gracie, in preparing for Saturday’s bout – now against last-minute-substitute Joey Beltrano –, he sought the help of one of MMA’s most successful coaches, Greg Jackson.

“First of all, he’s a cool guy. But I like going there to train, because the guys I’m going to fight are exclusively MMA fighters. In New York, I have great training sessions with Renzo and all my training partners, but they’re more Jiu-Jitsu guys and they accept the ground game. They’re not worried about going to the ground with me, and I don’t think that’s what will happen when I step into the octagon. I think they’ll try and avoid the ground, and at Jackson’s academy I was able to train with guys like that,” Rolles explains.

Another great finisher in the event is Ronys Torres. The beast from Manacapuru, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, will face one of the Gentle Art’s mortal enemies: Melvin Guillard.

“The good thing about Jiu-Jitsu guys is that they give me the chance to get the knockout of the night bonus. That’s how I’ll go into my next fight. I’ll be explosive and I’ll unload everything I have on this guy”, says Melvin Guillard.

Ronys responds: “I’ve trained Jiu-Jitsu since 1999. I can’t expect him to take me down and use what he’s learned of Jiu-Jitsu, and he can’t expect me to strike with him using excellent muay thai and boxing. Of course it’s MMA and I’m ready standing and on the ground, but I don’t believe he’ll fight me on the ground. You can’t learn Jiu-Jitsu in just six months. He’s been losing and he doesn’t intend to get another poor result. That’s why I think they matched this fight, pitting a newcomer to the organization against a guy who needs a win. He’ll try to knock me out, I know, but I’ve done my homework. Now we just have to wait for showtime. ”

For Jiu-Jitsu lovers who also enjoy MMA, the only better thing better would be to put on a gi and roll!

Escalado para encarar Josh Koscheck no UFC 109, Paulo Thiago teve o adversário trocado por Mike Swick, informação que o leitor já havia acompanhado aqui no GRACIEMAG.com. O Combate acontece no UFC 109, no dia 6 de fevereiro, em Las Vegas. Para o desafio, Paulo Thiago conta com um apoio extra de dois centros de MMA tradicionais no Rio de Janeiro: XGYM e Nova União.

“Vim passar duas semanas aqui no Rio. Estou na XGYM com Anderson Silva, Rogério Camões, André Galvão, Distak e na Nova União também. Está todo mundo me dando uma força e vim pegar uns treinos diferentes e aproveitar o gás dessa galera que está se preparando. Vamos unir as forças todos e nos ajudar. O intercâmbio só tem a somar”, conta Paulo Thiago ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Sobre a mudança de oponente, o lutador acredita que a substituição manteve a dificuldade da luta.

“Colocaram outro adversário a altura, bem conceituado dentro do evento. Essas coisas acontecem, o Koscheck se machucou. Mas o outro cara também é muito duro e estou treinando com a mesma intensidade”, garante ele, que não crê que a troca o prejudique no desafio.

“Muda um pouco a estratégia, mas tenho tempo suficiente, porque me informaram a substituição com mais de um mês de antecedência. É um adversário com estatura diferente, o Koscheck é um pouco mais baixo que o Swick. O jogo também é um pouco diferente. Enquanto um prefere mais a trocação, o Koscheck também costuma botar para baixo. Mas dá tempo para me preparar e vai dar tudo certo”, finaliza.

Escalado para enfrentar Josh Koscheck no UFC 109, que acontece no dia 6 de fevereiro, em Las Vegas, Paulo Thiago terá outro oponente pela frente. Koscheck acabou se contundindo e o substituto será Mike Swick.

Swick vinha numa série de quatro vitórias, mas acabou derrotado por Dan Hardy no UFC 105, combate que valia vaga pela disputa do cinturão meio-médio, que hoje pertence a Georges St. Pierre.

Já Paulo Thiago vem de vitória sobre Jacob Volkmann, no Ultimate 106. A luta contra Koscheck seria uma revanche para o americano, que foi nocauteado por Paulo no UFC 95.

Na principal luta da noite, Mark Coleman encara Randy Couture. Também no card principal, Demian Maia enfrenta Dan Miller, Nate Marquardt luta com Chael Sonnen e Matt Serra duela com Frank Trigg. Faixa-preta da arte suave, Ronys Torres estreará no evento contra Melvin Guillard.

Originally scheduled to face Josh Koscheck at the February-6 UFC 109 event in Las Vegas, Paulo Thiago will now have another opponent ahead of him. Koscheck was injured in training and will be replaced by Mike Swick.

Swick was on a four-fight winning streak until his loss to Dan Hardy at UFC 105, in a match deciding the next challenger to the welterweight title, now held by Georges St-Pierre; while Paulo Thiago comes in off a win over Jacob Volkmann, at UFC 106. The Koscheck fight would have been a rematch of their first encounter, where Paulo knocked the American out in the first round, at UFC 95.

In the evening’s main event, Mark Coleman faces Randy Couture. Also on the main card, Demian Maia encounters Dan Miller, Nate Marquardt fights Chael Sonnen and Matt Serra battles Frank Trigg. Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ronys Torres makes his debut for the organization against Melvin Guillard.
