Consolidado no mundo do Jiu-Jitsu, Léo Santos tem novo compromisso pela frente para seguir sua caminhada no UFC. O peso-leve , vencedor da segunda edição do reality show The Ultimate Fighter Brasil, enfrenta o experiente norte-americano Matt Wiman no dia 21 de março, pelo UFC Fight Night 62, no Rio de Janeiro, e a expectativa é de grande apoio de amigos e familiares no Ginásio do Maracanãzinho. O atleta comemorou 35 anos de vida na última quinta-feira, dia 5 de fevereiro, com planos de voltar às suas origens da arte suave para finalizar Wiman e manter a invencibilidade de nove lutas, sendo três delas no octógono.

A trajetória do brasileiro na organização americana foi toda construída no Brasil. Após estrear vencendo o Willian Patolino na final do TUF Brasil 2, em Fortaleza, o carioca radicado em Campos passou ainda por Natal, onde empatou com Norman Parke, e por Brasília, em seu último duelo. Na ocasião, ele superou Efrain Escudero por pontos. Continuando a trajetória em território nacional, Léo lutará pela primeira vez na sua cidade-natal, e promete encher o ginásio de fãs.

“Fiquei muito feliz com essa luta aqui no Rio. Sou carioca, nascido na cidade, mas me considero campista por ter vivido boa parte da minha vida em Campos. Podem ter certeza que vou trazer uma galera de lá para o Maracãnazinho. Estive no UFC 179 para acompanhar a luta do (José) Aldo, vi que o calor da galera é diferente, e isso só aumenta minha motivação para chegar lá e dar meu melhor. Lutar na frente de amigos, familiares e esse povo carioca, que é tão vibrante, vai ser especial. Confesso que estou ansioso”, garante Léo.

Passar mais um aniversário em ritmo intenso de treinamentos não é nenhuma novidade para Léo Santos, que nos dois últimos anos viveu situações semelhantes para os duelos com Parke e Patolino, respectivamente. O oponente dessa vez, porém, é considerado mais complicado para Léo por um motivo simples: é o próximo. Aos 31 anos, Matt Wiman é um velho conhecido do UFC, com quase nove anos competindo pela organização. No octógono, o norte-americano soma 10 vitórias e cinco derrotas. Além disso, Wiman nunca foi finalizado na carreira, escrita que Léo busca encerrar no dia 21 de março.

“Conheço o jogo do Wiman, já vi algumas lutas dele e sei que vai ser um adversário bem duro. Vi que ele nunca foi finalizado na carreira e isso só me deixou com mais vontade de colocar minha especialidade em prática, que é o Jiu-Jitsu. Estou fazendo um camp de treinamento muito bom, trabalhando em cima dos pontos fortes do meu adversário para terminar essa luta antes do fim dos três rounds, de preferência com uma finalização”, avisa.

At his seat and about to take off on his flight from the United States to Brazil, Coach Carlos “Escorrega” Lemos’s last words to the press while still on American soil were with GRACIEMAG.com, with whom he discussed the man sitting next to him, Spencer Fisher’s impending battle with Brazil’s Thiago Tavares at UFC Rio.

“He’s and great shape and will put in a great performance, you can count on it,” said the 2002 Jiu-Jitsu world champion who is also our GMA at Gracie Barra Countryside.

The flight attendant chimed in. It was time to turn off the phone, the plane was about to take off. Before that, though, “Escorrega” addressed the training Fisher has been doing to try and win in his opponent’s hometown.

Is Spencer coming with you to Brazil?

Yes, we’re going to finish up training at Gracie Barra.

What are his main weapons going into this fight?

He’s a great striker, the best I’ve ever seen in the lighter weight groups, and his defensive wrestling is really good, too. It’s really hard to take him down. His only weakness is on the ground, but we’ve been working on it for some time now.

How did your coaching him come about?

He showed up through a friend. I had three weeks to coach him for his last fight (loss to Ross Pearson at UFC 127), against a guy from the same school, a student of Bráulio Estima. We did some good work. I wasn’t in his corner, but he had a good fight and did a good job on the ground. For real, he landed hard shots the whole time but they didn’t give him the win. Fisher held an exchange with my academy, he’s got students who are wicked wrestlers. The training sessions were burly. Matt Wiman, who knocked out Thiago Tavares, is in the photos from the session [below], for example.

Dentro da aeronave, as últimas palavras antes da viagem dos Estados Unidos ao Brasil foram com o GRACIEMAG.com. O treinador Carlos Lemos, também conhecido como Escorrega, vem ao lado de Spencer Fisher, adversário do Brasileiro Thiago Tavares no UFC Rio.

“O cara tá bem e vai fazer bonito, podem esperar”, avisa o campeão Mundial de 2002, que é nosso GMA na Gracie Barra Countryside.

A comissária de bordo chamou a atenção. Já era a hora de desligar o telefone, o avião iria decolar. Antes disso, porém, Escorrega bateu um papo sobre os treinos de Fisher para tentar vencer na casa do adversário.

Já vem para o Brasil com o Spencer Fisher?

Sim, vamos finalizar o treinamento na Gracie Barra.

Quais as principais armas dele para o desafio?

Ele é um grande striker, o melhor que já vi entre os pesos mais leves, e tem o wrestling defensivo muito bom, é muito difícil derrubá-lo. A deficiência dele era o chão, mas estamos trabalhando isso há algum tempo.

Como começou a treinar ele?

Ele apareceu através de um amigo. Tive três semanas para treinar ele para a última luta (derrota para Ross Pearson no UFC 127), contra um cara que vem da mesma escola, aluno do Bráulio Estima. Conseguimos fazer um bom trabalho, não estive no corner dele, mas ele fez uma boa luta e trabalhou bem no chão. Na real, ele enfiou a mão, mas não deram a vitoria para ele. Fisher passou a fazer um intercâmbio na minha academia, ele tem alunos top no wrestling. O treino é duro. Nas fotos do nosso treino (logo abaixo), por exemplo, está o Matt Wiman, que já nocauteou o Thiago Tavares.

Ultimate Fight Night 23: Fights for the Troops 2 served Texas with some solid combat this Saturday night. It also defined who will be the first challenger to José Aldo’s newly-minted UFC featherweight belt, in a bout planned to figure on the card for UFC 129 April 30 in Toronto.

In earning his shot against champion Aldo, Mark Hominick notched his fourth win in a row by putting away George Roop by knockout in just 1:28 minutes of fighting.

In the evening’s main event, Melvin Guillard put an end to Evan Dunham’s chances via knees in the opening round. Guillard thus brings his winning streak in the lightweight division to four in a row.

Now former WEC champion Mike Brown remains in the doldrums by losing to UFC debutant Rani Yahya, accumulating a second loss in a row and third in four outings.

Nova União duo Amilcar Alves and Willamy Chiquerim took a loss apiece, losing to Charlie Brenneman and Waylon Lowe, respectively, both by unanimous decision.

O Ultimate Fight Night 23: Fights for the Troops 2 trouxe bons combates ao Texas na noite deste sábado. Além disso, definiu o próximo oponente de José Aldo pelo cinturão de penas, combate previsto para o UFC 129, no dia 30 de abril, em Toronto. Marcante também foi a forte torcida a favor dos lutadores americanos contra os estrangeiros, devido à patriota torcida presente no Fort Hood.

Para ter a chance contra o campeão Aldo, Mark Hominick precisou chegar à quinta vitória seguida. Em apenas 1min28s de disputa, o canadense nocauteou George Roop.

Na principal luta da noite, Melvin Guillard usou os joelhos para acabar com as chances de Evan Dunham, ainda no primeiro assalto. Guillard chega à quarta vitória seguida entre os leves.

Valeu o nocaute de Matt Mitrione em Tim Hague, com um petardo de esquerda para abrir o caminho, golpe digno de peso pesado. Mitrione segue invicto com quatro apresentações no cartel.

Já o ex-campeão do WEC Mike Brown segue em péssima fase. Contra Rani Yahya, que estreou no Ultimate, acumulou a segunda derrota seguida, a terceira nas últimas quatro lutas.

A dupla da Nova União Amilcar Alves e Willamy Chiquerim acabou derrotada. Os lutadores perderam, respectivamente, para Charlie Brenneman e Waylon Lowe, ambos por decisão unânime.

Now the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt won’t back down on yet another mission. Charles was called on to substitute Matt Wiman – out with a broken arm – in the fight with Efrain Escudero at the September 15 UFC Fight Night 22 show in Texas. The news was confirmed by MMAWeekly.com.

Escudero is a handful and is coming off a sensational triumph over Dan Lauzon. But who could doubt the young Bronx’s abilities?

“Belcher is super strong, has good Jiu-Jitsu and sharp muay thai. I trained a lot and, God willing, everything will go well for me,” he is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

“I feel this will be a good fight because our styles are similar. But the fact that we are both coming off losses is further motivation,” he adds.

A former light heavyweight, Gouveia will fight at middleweight. The change of division could set him up to face Anderson Silva. Nevertheless, the American Top Team representative discards a confrontation with the current champ. At least for the time being.

“I’m conscious of the fact I’m not ready to face a guy of the caliber of Anderson Silva. For that reason I’m trying to improve as a fighter, not just technically, but psychologically as well,” remarks the Brazilian, who spares no praise for the current champion.

“It’s one thing for someone to think he can beat the champion, but to win is completely different. Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period. Of course one day he’ll lose the belt, but by the time that happens a lot of competitors will show confidence they can beat him and, when fight time comes, they won’t be able to accomplish what they promised to,” he says in finishing.
