It’s carnival time in Brazil, one of the most popular festivities in the Jiu-Jitsu country. But thousands of kilometers away, more specifically in San Diego, California, the gentle art is a reason for celebration all its own. This is because some of the style’s greatest fighters took to the mats on the second day of the World Pro tryouts. And the big name of the event was Antonio Braga Neto, who took first place at weight and open weight. However, there’s no leaving out the performance of team Atos, which, besides seeing the return of André Galvão to competition, dominated most of the black belt divisions.

In the under-92 kg semifinal, Braga first had to beat João Assis. After getting the takedown and taking his back, he finished up with a choke from the back. At the other end of the bracket, Marcus Bochecha beat Fabiano “Pega Leve” by 11 to 0. In the decider, Neto returned his recent loss to Bochecha with a sweep and picture-perfect takedown that brought the crowd to its feet.

In the absolute decider, Braga faced André Galvão, who was also coming off a win over Bochecha. The Ralph Gracie representative managed to mount Galvão and thus secure his second gold medal of the day.

At under-65 kg, Guilherme Mendes had to get past Baret Yoshida to join his teammates Eduardo Ramos and Bruno Frazatto, who had closed out the other end of the bracket. Gui swept and passed guard four times (14 to 0) and took first place, with Ed Ramos in second and Frazatto in third.

In the under-74kg division team Atos came on strong yet again. Gilbert Durinho and Jonatas Tagarela had already closed out one side of the bracket on Saturday. It was up to Rodrigo Caporal to beat Rodrigo Freitas with a back mount for the team to dominate the division. Durinho then went on to have a friendly fight with Caporal to take gold.

André Galvão, who had a splendid showing on Saturday, had his work cut out for him in the semifinal against Clark Gracie, a bout which he won via judges’ decision. At the other side of the bracket Claudio Calasans suffered a sweep from Lucas Leite, but got the takedown and swept to guarantee yet another double win for Atos, with Galvão taking first place.

In the under-92 kg class, gold was Marcus “Sharpei” Machado’s. The black belt beat Mateus Castaldini in the semifinal with a takedown, sweep, knee on belly (9 to 0). At the other end, Vitor “Gigante” Toledo beat Marcel Louzado on advantages. In a tough final, Mateus earned his way to the World Pro with two advantage points.

And the ladies put on a sterling display in San Diego too. Purple belt Samantha Faulhaber submitted Kiri Liao with a clock choke in the under-61 kg weight group. Now the experienced Penny Thomas beat Nicoli Leite to guarantee her trip to Abu Dhabi.

É época de carnaval no Brasil, uma das festas mais populares no país do Jiu-Jitsu.  Mas, a milhares de quilômetros de distância, mais precisamente em San Diego, na Califórnia, a arte suave é que foi motivo de comemoração. Isso porque alguns dos grandes lutadores da modalidade estiveram em ação no segundo dia da seletiva do World Pro. E o grande nome do evento foi Antonio Braga Neto, que faturou as premiações pelo primeiro lugar na categoria de peso e no absoluto. No entanto, não há como deixar de lado o desempenho da equipe Atos, que, além de contar com o bom retorno de André Galvão aos dojôs, dominou a maioria das categorias na faixa-preta.

Na semifinal do peso +92kg, Braga primeiro teve de bater João Assis. Depois de quedar e pegar as costas, finalizou com um estrangulamento das costas. Do outro lado da chave, Marcus Bochecha bateu Fabiano Pega Leve por 11 a 0. Na decisão, Neto devolveu o revés recente para Bochecha com uma raspagem e uma bela queda, que levantou a torcida.

Na decisão do Absoluto, Braga teve pela frente André Galvão, que também vinha de vitória sobre Bochecha. O representante da Ralph Gracie conseguiu montar em Galvão para garantir duas medalhas de ouro.

No peso 65kg, Guilherme Mendes teve que passar por Baret Yoshida para se juntar aos companheiros Eduardo Ramos e Bruno Frazatto, que já haviam fechado no outro lado da chave. Gui raspou e passou quatro vezes a guarda (14 a 0) e ficou com a primeira colocação, com Ed Ramos em segundo e Frazatto em terceiro.

Na categoria 74kg, o time da Atos veio com tudo mais uma vez. Gilbert Durinho e Jonatas Tagarela já haviam fechado de um lado da chave no sábado. Coube a Rodrigo Caporal bater Rodrigo Freitas com uma pegada de costas para o time dominar a categoria. Durinho ainda fez uma luta amistosa com Caporal para ficar com o ouro.

André Galvão, que já havia feito boas disputas no sábado, teve de suar na semifinal contra Clark Gracie, luta que venceu na decisão dos juízes. Do outro lado, Claudio Calasans sofreu uma raspagem de Lucas Leite, mas quedou e raspou para garantir mais uma dobradinha para a Atos, com Galvão no primeiro posto.

No peso até 92kg o ouro foi para Marcus Machado “Sharpei”. O faixa-preta bateu na semifinal Mateus Castaldini com uma queda, raspagem, passagem e joelho na barriga (9 a 0). Do outro lado, Vitor Toledo “Gigante” passou por Marcel Louzado nas vantagens. Numa decisão dura, Mateus carimbou o passaporte para o World Pro com duas vantagens.

E as meninas também fizeram bonito em San Diego. A faixa-roxa Samantha Faulhaber finalizou Kiri Liao com um estrangulamento relógio no peso abaixo de 61kg. Já a experiente Penny Thomas bateu Nicoli Leite e vai com tudo pago para lutar em Abu Dhabi.

We sat down for a chat with one of these teachers, Las Vegas Open champion Marco Antonio “Sharpei” Giudice Machado, who recently moved to the USA to bolster Robert Drysdale’s team in California.

You even switched teams before coming here. How did that go, and how’s your new life?
It was a really difficult decision, as I had to change teams. I was at Barbosa and Robert called on me to be part of his team. I liked the offer and accepted. Now I live in Lancaster and am teaching at Kemos Fight Factory. There are excellent training partners: Lucas Leite, Lapela, João Assis, Mike and Sergio Bomba; we have all we need for professional training. And everyone’s really good people here, too.

But Robert’s one of your best friends, right? Is that the reason for the move…
Yes, “Cumbuca” is one of my best friends. I’ve known Robert since I was ten; we’ve been training together since the Master days, then at TT and finally Brasa. His Jiu-Jitsu is incredible; he helps me a lot even though he’s now focused on MMA. He’s really sharp without the gi. I believe soon he’ll be giving the guys at the UFC a hard time.

You just won the medium heavyweight division at the Las Vegas Open. How is your Jiu-Jitsu career coming along?
At black belt everything’s coming along really well; I’ve been competing as a black belt for two years and managed to win some titles. I have a lot to improve on to achieve more, and that’s what I’m working towards. And things here in California are going really well, I competed at three tourneys and won all three: the Joe Moreira, South Bay, and Las Vegas Open tournaments. I hope to keep evolving along with my team.

You had an even match with Tarsis Humphreys at the last Brazilian Nationals. How did that go?
It was 0 to 0. I went up against Tarsis in the quarterfinals of this year’s Brazilian Nationals. It was the third match and the winner would go through to the semifinals. I like his Jiu-Jitsu a lot; I’ve known him a long time. But I feel I attacked a lot more than he did, both standing and on the ground. No one scored any points. I feel leaving it in the hands of the judges is bad all around, for him, for me and especially, the referee. We’ll cross paths again in the future and I hope we have a great match.

What’s your next commitment?
My plans for now are the American Nationals, the Miami Open and two important no-gi championships: the Pan and the Worlds. And then, of course, to train a lot for the 2011 Pan and Worlds. I have a lot I need to do in Jiu-Jitsu, and I hope, God willing, to overcome all the obstacles and get gold at the Worlds. Without a doubt that’s by main goal as a competitor.

What’s your advice for someone who wants to move to another country and teach Jiu-Jitsu?
It’s hard work, lots of classes, coupled with hard training. But it’s gratifying, especially when you start seeing results, like growth in the academy and moving up the ranks at championships. I believe there’s room for everybody, but my advice is: anyone who comes to the USA, come willing to work. Because in Brazil all everybody wants to do is train and complain about not finding a place for themselves. There’s no lack of Jiu-Jitsu gyms in California. You have to come determined.

Batemos um papo com um desses professores, o campeão do Las Vegas Open Marco Antonio Giudice Machado, o Sharpei, que recentemente se mudou para os EUA para reforçar a equipe de Robert Drysdale na Califa.

Você chegou a mudar até de equipe antes de vir para cá. Como foi isso, e como está a nova vida?
Foi uma decisão muito difícil, pois tive de mudar de equipe. Eu estava no Barbosa e o Robert me chamou para integrar a equipe dele. Achei a proposta muito boa e aceitei. Estou morando em Lancaster e dando aulas na Kemos Fight Factory. O treino está excelente: Lucas Leite, Lapela, João Assis, Mike e Sergio Bomba, enfim toda uma estrutura para que possamos desenvolver
um treino profissional. Além do pessoal ser muito gente fina.

Mas o Robert é um de seus melhores amigos, certo? Por isso a mudança…
Sim, o “Cumbuca” é um dos meus melhores amigos. Conheço o Robert há mais de dez anos, começamos a treinar juntos desde o tempo da Master, depois na TT e por fim a Brasa. O Jiu-Jitsu dele é incrível, ele me ajuda bastante apesar do foco dele hoje ser o MMA. Ele está muito afiado sem pano. Acredito que em um futuro muito breve que ele vai dar muito trabalho para o pessoal do UFC.

Você acabou de vencer o Las Vegas Open, na categoria preta meio-pesado. Como está a sua carreira no Jiu-Jitsu?
Na faixa-preta está tudo muito bom, tenho competido há dois anos na preta e consegui alguns títulos. Tenho muito a melhorar para conseguir mais, e estou trabalhando para isso. E aqui na Califórnia as coisas estão indo muito bem, lutei três vezes e ganhei as três: o Joe Moreira Tournament, South Bay, e o Las Vegas Open. Espero continuar evoluindo junto com o meu time.

Você teve uma luta parelha com Tarsis Humphreys no último Brasileiro. Como foi isso?
Foi 0 a 0. Lutei contra o Tarsis nas quartas-de-final do Brasileiro deste ano, era a nossa terceira luta e quem ganhasse iria para a semifinal. Gosto muito do Jiu-Jitsu dele, conheço ele há muito tempo. Mas acredito que ataquei muito mais, tanto em pé quanto no chão. Como ninguém fez pontos, acho que deixar na mão do juiz é ruim para todos, para mim, para ele e especialmente para o
árbitro. Vamos ter outras oportunidades para lutar e espero que possamos fazer uma grande luta.

Qual seu próximo compromisso?
Meus planos por enquanto são o American Nationals, o Miami Open e mais dois importantes campeonatos sem pano: o Pan e o Mundial. E depois, claro, treinar muito para o Pan e o Mundial de 2011. Tenho muito o que fazer no Jiu-Jitsu, e espero, se Deus quiser, superar todos os obstáculos e conseguir o ouro no Mundial. Esse sem dúvida é o objetivo de todo competidor.

Para quem pensa em mudar de país para ensinar Jiu-Jitsu, qual seu conselho?
O trabalho é difícil, bastante aula, junto com treino pesado. Mas é gratificante, especialmente ao ver os resultados aparecendo, a academia crescendo e as escaladas nos campeonatos. Acredito que todos podem ter seu espaço.
Mas um conselho: quem vier ao EUA, venha com disposição de trabalhar. Porque no Brasil o pessoal só quer treinar e reclama que nao tem espaço. Na Califórnia o que nao falta é academia de Jiu-Jitsu. É preciso vir com vontade.
