Radicado em Abu Dhabi, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu e campeão de wrestling Marcos Oliveira recebeu, no último dia 26 de junho, na Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, a Medalha de Mérito Pedro Ernesto, uma das maiores honrarias concedidas a figuras da Cidade Maravilhosa. Além da medalha, Marcão teve outro presente: sua esposa, Caroline De Lazzer, foi chamada para participar do ADCC 2013, que ocorre em Pequim, na China. Carol vai disputar a categoria acima de 60kg, da campeã Gabi Garcia, no evento sem kimono dos 18 e 19 de outubro.

O casal ministra aulas de Jiu-Jitsu em Abu Dhabi, capital dos Emirados Árabes, há cerca de quatro anos. Marcão hoje treina diversas feras do UFC, como Jon Tuck. Na última edição do WPJJC, a gaúcha conquistou a categoria até 72kg, ao vencer Fernanda Mazzelli na final.

A Medalha de Mérito Pedro Ernesto é a principal homenagem que o Rio de Janeiro presta a quem mais se destaca na sociedade brasileira ou internacional. Recebeu esse nome em reconhecimento ao trabalho do prefeito Pedro Ernesto.

Macau, a três horas de Hong Kong (barco) e a três horas de Pequim (avião), significa “Porta da Baía” em cantonês, língua local da província, que também fala português.

A porta da Baía foi então o local escolhido pelo UFC para aportar na China, o mercado dos sonhos de Dana White e seus executivos. Se tudo der certo, o UFC exibido de manhã no ocidente vai pegar.

Macau, como Las Vegas e Nova Jersey, é uma terra com muitos cassinos de luxo, e já há futuras promessas do esporte pondo suas fichas no card principal deste sábado. O Canal Combate transmite, a partir de 10h30 da matina.

É o caso do peso leve Jonathan Cruz Tuck, um confiante faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu que vem de Guam, território americano vizinho da China.

“Estava tudo planejado, e o sonho dele agora começa a se realizar”, explica seu treinador de Jiu-Jitsu Marcão Oliveira, do Emirates Team. “Ele é como um filho para mim e para a Carol (DeLazzer), desde que veio de Guam treinar com a gente. Ele sempre passa pelo menos uma temporada por ano em Abu Dhabi”, lembra Marcão, que outro dia também brilho, ao beliscar o ouro master no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu Sem Kimono.

Jon Tuck tem seis vitórias no cartel, três por nocaute e três por finalização, e enfrenta o chinês Zhang Tie Quan, que também costuma amaciar em pé para finalizar no chão.

“Sabíamos que, se o Jon mantivesse um cartel perfeito, quando o UFC viesse à Ásia ele iria ganhar uma chance. Ainda mais com o título que tem no Jiu-Jitsu – ele venceu o WPJJC de Abu Dhabi, em 2010, quando era faixa-azul.  Todos adoram ele aqui nos Emirados, o Tuck foi recebido de braços abertos por todos os treinadores”, lembra Marcão.

Tuck passou ainda dois anos só treinando. A maior parte do tempo, treinou apenas Jiu-Jitsu, com e sem kimono. “Quando percebemos que ele estava duro, no ponto certo no chão, ele voltou a treinar MMA. E na sua volta emplacou dois belos nocautes e consolidou um bom recorde”.

Macau, a three-hour boat ride from Hong Kong and three hours from Beijing by plane, is a city whose name means “Port of the Bay” in Cantonese, the local language in the province, where Portuguese is also spoken.

So Port of the Bay was the location picked to host the UFC’s maiden venture into China, a dream market for Dana White and his executive counterparts. If all goes to plan, tomorrow’s UFC will be a hit in the Far East.

Macau, like Las Vegas and New Jersey, is a land of high-end casinos, and a number of the sport’s up-and-comers are putting their chips on the main card this Saturday.

Such is the case with the lightweight Jonathan Cruz Tuck, a confident Jiu-Jitsu brown belt who harks from Guam, a US-controlled territory not far from China.

“Everything was planned, and his dream is starting to come true,” explains his Jiu-Jitsu coach Marcão Oliveira of Emirates Team. “He’s been like a son to me and Carol [DeLazzer] ever since he came from Guam to train with us. He comes over and spends some time in Abu Dhabi every year,” recalls Marcão, who himself was in the spotlight a short while back, when he won gold in the masters division at the European No-Gi Championship.

Jon Tuck has six wins on his record, three by way of knockout and the other three by submission, and he will have his work cut out for him when he faces China’s Zhang Tie Quan, who himself tends to do some softening up of his opponents standing before pursuing the tapout on the ground.

“We knew that if Jon kept a perfect record, when the UFC came to Asia he’d get a chance, especially with the Jiu-Jitsu title he holds—he won the Abu Dhabi WPJJC as a blue belt in 2010. Everyone loves him here in the Emirates. Tuck was received with open arms by all the trainers,” recalls Marcão.

Tuck spent two years just training. Most of the time, all he did was Jiu-Jitsu, with and without the gi. “When we realized he was tough, just right on the ground, he started training in MMA again. And on his return, he scored two sweet knockouts to cap off a good record.”

An elite wrestler and Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Marcos “Santa Cruz” Oliveira had his day in the sun in the lead-up to the Abu Dhabi Fighting Championship final in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. He was celebrated in the streets, beat his first two opponents with ease, and he was favored to win the final, which would have earned him a million dirhams had he won.

But reality exploded in his face, in the form of a hard first-round knockout at the hands of Russia’s Shamil Abdurahimov last March 11.

“After the GP I had to come up with a new hobby to keep me motivated to fight and carry on with life. I found it when I realized my passion is really to teach Jiu-Jitsu to kids, and I started filming and editing our training sessions; that was something important to me,” recounts Marcão.

“So I started training in the gi again, and it was hard readapting to it. I think one of the mistakes I made in the GP was putting training Jiu-Jitsu in the gi aside,” recognized the fighter, who came close to putting in an appearance at the 2011 Worlds.

“The stumbling block was that we never have vacation in June here in Abu Dhabi. I’d also have liked to participate at the World Pro here, but the focus at home was Carol (DeLazzer, his wife). At home we have a motto: one dream at a time. But vacation’s coming up and I’m going to quench my longing for Gi competitions at the Rio Open, in Tijuca,” said the black belt born in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, who carries on brushing up his boxing. With his head and technique up to date, he already dreams of a rematch to put his worst loss yet to rest.

“Even before fighting, Shamil and I were handed a contract setting up the rematch, which should go down in November. After the fight I met up with the ADFC promoter, but we didn’t go to far with the conversation. They were understanding of my loss, let me take my time to get some air, so to speak,” he said in praise. “I really do hope the fight happens, since my whole team and I know how ready I was and how I could have won. Some unforeseen events happened the week of the fight and nothing went according to plan, but I’m ready for the next one,” he stated.

In the meantime, he carries on teaching class and having fun with his students. “I became famous with the GP; I was on the covers of newspapers and magazines, which weren’t GRACIEMAG but it was nice,” he joked.

“People are still coming up to me today; everyone knows that I teach at a project put together by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and they want to see my next fights. And every day when I show up at the academy the kids applaud me. That’s worth more than a million,” he said in finishing.

Wrestler de elite e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, Marcos “Santa Cruz” Oliveira vivia dias de celebridade, às vésperas da final do Abu Dhabi Fighting Championship, na capital dos Emirados. Era festejado nas ruas, vencera seus dois primeiros oponentes com tranquilidade, e era o favorito para a final, cujo prêmio era uma bolada de um milhão de dirhans.

Mas a realidade explodiu na sua cara, sob a forma do nocaute duro sofrido pelas mãos do russo Shamil Abdurahimov, ainda no primeiro assalto, no dia 11 de março.

“Após o GP, precisei de um novo hobby para continuar motivado a lutar e conseguir levar a vida na boa. Encontrei ao ver que minha paixão era mesmo dar aulas de Jiu-Jitsu para a criançada, e comecei a filmar e editar os treinos, foi algo importante para mim”, conta Marcão.

“Recomecei então a treinar de pano, e foi duro reacostumar com o kimono. Acho que um dos meus erros no GP foi ter deixado de treinar Jiu-Jitsu de pano”, reconhece ele, que quase apareceu no Mundial 2011.

“O empecilho foi que não tivemos férias em junho aqui em Abu Dhabi. Também queria ter participado do World Pro aqui, mas o foco em casa era a Carol (DeLazzer, sua esposa). Em casa temos um lema: um sonho de cada vez. Mas as férias estão chegando e vou matar a saudade das competições de kimono no Rio Open, no Tijuca”, diz o faixa-preta nascido em Santa Cruz, no Rio, que continua treinando boxe. Com a cabeça e a técnica em dia, ele já sonha com a revanche para lavar sua pior derrota.

“Antes mesmo da luta, Shamil e eu recebemos um contrato para marcar a revanche, que deve rolar em novembro. Depois da luta, encontrei com o empresário do ADFC, mas não conversamos a fundo. Eles respeitaram legal minha derrota, me deixaram ter meu próprio tempo, tomar um ar, como se diz”, elogia. “Eu espero que a luta ocorra mesmo, pois eu e toda minha equipe sabem como eu estava pronto e podia ter vencido. Alguns imprevistos aconteceram na semana da luta, e nada saiu como esperávamos, mas estou pronto para a próxima”, ele afirma.

Enquanto isso, ele segue dando aulas e curtindo os alunos. “Fiquei famoso com o GP, saí em capas de jornal e de revistas, que não eram uma GRACIEMAG mas valeu”, brinca.

“Hoje o povo continua me abordando, todos sabem que ensino num projeto criado pelo próprio Xeque Mohammed bin Zayed, e querem saber das minhas próximas lutas. E, todo dia que eu chego na academia para ensinar, a criançada me aplaude. Isso vale mais que um milhão”, conclui.

Even after winning the biggest MMA event in the Middle East, the ADFC, heavyweight Shamil Abdurahimov (12w, 1l) doesn’t see himself as a potential successor to compatriot Fedor Emelianenko.

In an interview with GRACIEMAG.com Shamil comments on his conquest from March 11 and tells of when he became certain he would win the ADFC GP, where he went down the line beating Jeff Monson, Rameau Sokoudjou and Marcão Oliveira, the tournament’s other finalist. The only blemish on Shamil’s career is his loss to Brazil’s Thiago “Big Monster” Santos.

What was your start in MMA like?

As is the custom in Dagestan, where I’m from, all kids start doing some sport during childhood. And there freestyle wrestling is very developed, so most kids start in that sport. Gradually I started getting serious about it, doing one competition after the other, and naturally I moved into MMA (in 2008).

What did you differently in training for the GP?

At the outset I trained normally, but after beating Jeff Monson I realized my preparations wouldn’t be enough, since I had to be a cut above my competitors. Then I faced Sokoudjou. To me he would be the worst opponent for me, but everything went along normally, and I didn’t doubt I could win it for a second. That’s when I realized the million dirhams would be mine. Even more so when the Brazilian (Marcão) started smack talking, provoking me in the lead-up to our fight. Those who talk a lot don’t get anything done. (Marcão joked that he would let the Russian hold his belt for a few seconds after the fight.)

But be that as it may, I respect all the opponents I faced in the GP. Each of them was a necessary obstacle, and they are worthy fighters, because they’ve had many other fights in their lives. To me, I don’t see opponents as being strong, but as being worthy.

Do you consider yourself to be a natural successor to Fedor Emelianenko, another Russian who dominated the field of competition he was in for a long time?

“Feodor” is the worthiest of sportsmen, and all worthy sportsmen in life see their rise and fall. And we will all one day be overcome and substituted. I don’t consider myself to be a successor to the style and technique of Fedor, but I too have my Russian fans, and that to me is enough.

Mesmo após vencer o maior evento de MMA ocorrido no Oriente Médio, o ADFC, o peso pesado Shamil Abdurahimov (12v, 1d) não se vê como um candidato a sucessor do compatriota Fedor Emelianenko.

Em entrevista ao GRACIEMAG.com, Shamil comentou a conquista, ocorrida em 11 de março, e disse quando teve certeza de que seria campeão do ADFC, em que enfileirou Jeff Monson, Rameau Sokoudjou e Marcão Oliveira, o outro finalista do torneio. A única derrota da carreira de Shamil foi para o brasileiro Thiago “Big Monster” Santos.

Como foi seu começo no MMA?

Como é costume em Dagestan, de onde eu vim, desde a infância os pais já levam todas as crianças para fazer algum esporte. E lá a luta olímpica estilo livre é bastante desenvolvida, então a maioria dos moleques começa nesse esporte. Gradualmente a coisa foi ficando séria, uma competição atrás da outra, e naturalmente comecei no MMA (em 2008).

O que você fez de diferente nos treinos para o GP?

De início, treinei normalmente, mas depois de vencer Jeff Monson eu percebi que a preparação seria insuficiente, já que eu precisava estar acima dos outros concorrentes. Eu então enfrentei Sokoudjou. Para mim seria meu pior adversário, mas tudo correu como normalmente, e não duvidei da vitória em nenhum instante. Foi aí que eu percebi que o milhão de dirhans era meu. Ainda mais quando o brasileiro (Marcão) começou a falar muito, a provocar, antes de nossa luta. Quem fala muito faz pouco. (Marcão fez brincadeiras de que deixaria o russo segurar por uns segundos seu cinturão após a luta.)
Mas seja como for, eu respeito todos os oponentes que tive no GP. Cada um deles foi um obstáculo necessário, e são lutadores valorosos, porque eles já fizeram muitas outras lutas na vida. Para mim, não vejo os adversários como FORTES, e sim como VALOROSOS.

Você se considera um natural sucessor de Fedor Emelianenko, outro russo que dominou as paradas por um bom tempo?

“Feodor” é um esportista do maior valor, e todo esportista valoroso durante a vida conhece o apogeu e queda. E todos seremos um dia superados e substituídos. Eu não me considero um sucessor do estilo e da técnica do Fedor, mas também tenho minha torcida na Rússia, e isso me basta.

Terminou, em Abu Dhabi, a final do GP do ADFC, que deu um milhão de dirhans para o grande campeão do torneio.

No penúltimo embate da noite, uma superluta entre Bob Sapp e o inglês descendente de cipriotas Stav “Crazy Bear” Economou, Sapp entrou na arena dando um show à parte, cantando e fazendo careta. A brasileirada presente não aliviou, e berrou o nome de Minotauro.

Dificilmente os gritos influenciaram o gigante americano, mas o fato é que Sapp decepcionou novamente. Logo no início, tomou uma queda no double-leg e foi castigado do cem-quilos, até a interrupção do árbitro a 1min45s do primeiro assalto.

Na grande final do GP milionário, o brasileiro Marcão Oliveira entrou empurrado por seus alunos, mas a mão certeira do russo Shamil Abdurahimov cantou mais alto. Shamil nocauteou o brasileiro a 1min55s do primeiro assalto. Mal Fedor foi destronado, no Strikeforce, e já surge um novo russo no trono do Oriente…

In the second-to-last fight, between Bob Sapp and Englishman of Cypriot descent Stav “Crazy Bear” Economou, Sapp entered the arena putting on a show all his own, singing and making faces. The Brazilians in the stands were unwilling to miss a chance to taunt him and shouted the name Minotauro.

Unlikely that the shouting influenced the giant American, but the fact is that Sapp disappointed yet again. Right at the start he took a double-leg takedown and was punished from side-control before the referee interrupted the fight at 1:45 minutes of the first round.

In the grand finale, Brazil’s Marcão Oliveira made his entrance egged on by his students, but the sharp-shooting fist of Russia’s Shamil Abdurahimov spoke louder. Shamil knocked the Brazil out at 1:55 minutes of the first round. Fedor was only just dethroned, at Strikeforce, and already there’s another Russian taking over the East…
