Graciemag has learned that Marcel Fortuna has signed with the UFC and will make his debut in February. Fortuna, of Ralph Gracie Academy, was a brown-belt world champion in 2007 and a black-belt European champion. In 2012 he won the San Francisco Open while transitioning to MMA, where he currently has eight wins and one loss.

He will take on heavyweight Anthony Hamilton at the Feb. 4 UFC event in Houston, TX.

Atleta da Ralph Gracie Academy, conhecido como “Mãozinha” entre os colegas de tatame, Fortuna foi campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-marrom em 2007, tem no currículo títulos na faixa-preta como Europeu, Sul-Americano (em 2006, na primeira edição o evento) e Pan-Americano, e ao longo da carreira bateu nomes como Otávio Sousa, Rodrigo Cavaca e Bruno Bastos. Em 2012, Marcel conquistou o ouro no São Francisco Open, já na faixa-preta, enquanto fazia sua transição para o MMA. De luvas, a fera tem no cartel oito vitórias, cinco por finalização, e uma derrota.

O brasuca já tem data e adversário definidos para a estreia. Ele encara o peso pesado Anthony Hamilton, no UFC: Bermudez x Zumbi Coreano, no dia 4 de fevereiro, em Houston, EUA.

Every month, you find GRACIEMAG at the news stand with a thousand and one tips for sharpening up your Jiu-Jitsu. Here on GRACIEMAG.com we just look to provide complementary lessons. Today’s is on the guard, those legs that keep a fighter’s arms and neck safe.

As Carlos Gracie Jr. puts it, “The guard is a Jiu-Jitsu fighter’s fortress.” And that’s the straight truth. Starting from the position, gentle-art practitioners have millions of options for keeping an aggressor at bay, not to mention the myriad attacks that can prove decisive in a match, in or out of the gi.

GRACIEMAG.com hunted down seven gi-wearing beasts who were ready and willing to share some moves for efficiently attacking from guard position. Heed their words, and when you’re done fathoming what they have to say, share with us: What is it that you do to make your guard more efficient and become a well-rounded fighter?

1-COMBINE DEFENSE AND ATTACK FROM GUARD

For Isaque Paiva of Saikoo team, the secret is in upholding the defense position while, at the same time and ever more efficiently, launching attacks like, for instance, chokes from there.

2-ATTACK TO NOT NEED TO DEFEND

To 2012 Pan champion Lucas Leite it’s all about making your guard offensive, never static. “From guard the hint is to attack—the more you attack, the less you’ll need to defend,” is the teacher from CheckMat’s advice.

3-BREAK THE ENEMY’S POSTURE

According to Marcel Fortuna of Ralph Gracie academy, “One of the main tricks to closed guard is undermining your opponent’s posture. Train to break his grips and pull him to you, cracking his posture. That’s a key detail. After that you can start going for sweeps and finishes.”

4-CLIMB THE OPPONENT USING THE LAPEL

The next lesson comes direct from Pennsylvania, USA. Black belt Daniel Beleza of SAS team has a lesson exclusively for GRACIEMAG.com readers, a choke from guard using the adversary’s lapel.

5-COLLAR AND SLEEVE GRIPS

To André Galvão the key is in control. “Control your opponent’s collar and sleeve and you’ll have plenty of options for attack from guard,” says the teacher from team Atos. “By sinking those grips you can snag an arm, triangle or omoplata. It’s a basic grip but it offers lots of finishing options, control and attacks.”

6-PRACTICE PLENTY OF OMOPLATAS AND TURN ON AUTOMATIC PILOT

To Lucas Lepri of Alliance, doing lots of omoplata repetitions makes guard playing smooth sailing. “I really like the omoplata lock; I feel it works really well from any guard, and it always catches the opponent by surprise,” preaches Lepri. “You just need to practice it plenty so it’ll be on automatic, and after that you iron it out in training.”

7-HAVE A STRONG STARTING POSITION IN JIU-JITSU

Controlling the opponent’s posture is crucial when you attack from guard,” says Gracie Humaitá’s Zak Maxwell. “With a firm grip on the lapel and another on the sleeve I feel more comfortable to start going for most of my attacks. Have a strong initial position that you trust, and go for it.”

Como diz Carlos Gracie Jr, “a guarda é a fortaleza do lutador de Jiu-Jitsu” – pura verdade. A partir desta posição, o praticante da arte suave tem milhões de opções de embarreirar o agressor, além dos incontáveis ataques que podem encerrar um duelo, com e sem kimono.

O GRACIEMAG.com foi atrás de sete monstros do pano que não se furtaram a dar dicas de como atacar com eficiência de dentro da guarda. Aprenda com eles, e no fim deixe sua dica: o que você faz para ter uma guarda eficiente e para ser um lutador completo?

1 – Combine a defesa e o ataque da guarda

Para Isaque Paiva (Saikoo), o segredo é conseguir manter a posição de defesa, e ao mesmo tempo buscar, cada dia com mais eficiência, aplicar golpes possíveis dali, como por exemplo, o estrangulamento.

2 – Ataque para não precisar defender

Para o campeão do Pan 2012 Lucas Leite, o principal é ficar com uma guarda ofensiva, jamais estática. “De dentro da guarda a dica é atacar – quanto mais você ataca, menos vai precisar se defender”, ensina o professor da CheckMat.

3 – Quebre a postura do inimigo

Segundo Marcel Fortuna (Ralph Gracie), “um dos grande detalhes da guarda fechada é trabalhar na postura do seu oponente. Treine para estourar as pegadas dele e puxe o oponente para coma de você, quebrando a postura. Esse é um ótimo detalhe. Depois é só começar a trabalhar as raspagens e finalizações”.

4 – Escale o adversário com a lapela

A próxima lição vem direto da Pensilvânia, nos Estados Unidos. O faixa-preta Daniel Beleza (SAS) ensina com exclusividade, ao leitor do GRACIEMAG.com, um estrangulamento de dentro da guarda com o uso da lapela do adversário.

5 – Pegada na gola e na manga do kimono

Para André Galvão, a chave é o controle. “Domine a gola e a manga de seu adversário, e você terá muitas opções de ataques da guarda”, reforça o professor da Atos. “Com estas pegadas, você pode pegar braço, triângulo e omoplata. É uma pegada básica, mas que oferece muitas opções de finalização, controle e ataques”.

6 – Treine muito omoplata e ligue o automático

Para Lucas Lepri (Alliance), a repetição da omoplata é um caminho suave. “Gosto muito da chave omoplata, acho que funciona bem para qualquer guarda, e sempre surpreende o adversário”, ensina Lepri. “Você só precisa treinar várias vezes para ficar no automático, e depois disso ajustá-las ao seu treinamento”.

7 – Tenha uma posição inicial forte no Jiu-Jitsu

“Controlar a postura do seu adversário é fundamental para atacar da guarda”, diz Zak Maxwell (Gracie Humaitá). “Com a mão forte na lapela e outra na manga, eu me sinto mais confortável para começar a maioria dos meus ataques. Tenha uma posição inicial que você confie e caia dentro”.

JIU-JITSU’S ABOUT NOT GETTING AHEAD OF YOURSELF

“You always learn something or the other when you compete, and at the San Diego Trials I ended up getting ahead of myself in going for the finish and ended up losing important positions,” Marcel recounted.

“I’d already faced my first opponent two weeks earlier at the San Franciso Open. That time he pulled guard on me, and I took eight minutes to pass and get back control. In San Diego he tried a different strategy on me; he started out standing, so I took him down, passed guard and got an armlock on him from side-control in less than a minute.

“In the final I started out standing, pulled guard and then swept. I tried passing, and he turned on all fours. That was where I got hasty: I got his back and went for the choke, but he escaped and ended up in my guard again. I ended up winning by 6-0, but I could have done a better job of scrutinizing the situations before attacking,” he added, before offering a helpful pointer for improving your guard game.

EXPOSE YOURSELF TO DANGER AT THE ACADEMY

“I’ve been working a lot on my guard because I tended to play top position a lot at tournaments. Now, I feel much more comfortable playing top or bottom depending on my game plan. Any position you wish to improve on you need to expose yourself to. There’s no point in only doing what you’re good at. At the academy you have to expose yourself to those positions against your training partners to improve,” said the fighter, who also boasts a blemishless three-fight MMA career.

Jiu-Jitsu é não se afobar

“Sempre se aprende uma lição a cada competição, e na Seletiva de San Diego acabei indo muito afobado para finalizar e acabei perdendo posições importantes”, contou Marcel.

“O primeiro adversário eu já tinha lutado com ele duas semanas atrás, no San Francisco Open. Lá ele me puxou para a guarda, e levei oito minutos até passar e pegar as costas. Em San Diego, ele tentou outra estratégia comigo, começou trocando em pé, aí eu coloquei ele para baixo, passei a guarda e peguei no armlock do cem-quilos, em menos de um minuto”, disse.

“Na final, comecei trocando em pé, puxei para guarda e raspei, tentei passar e ele virou de quatro. Aí vem o lance da pressa, peguei as costas e fui para o estrangulamento, mas ele escapou e caiu na minha guarda novamente. Acabei levando nos pontos 6 a 0. Mas poderia ter analisado melhor as situações, antes de atacar”, completou ele, que deixou dica importante para melhorar seu jogo na guarda.

Na academia, se exponha ao perigo

“Eu tenho trabalhado bastante minha guarda, porque eu costumava jogar muito por cima nos campeonatos. Hoje já me sinto mais confortável pra jogar por cima ou por baixo dependendo da estratégia de luta. Qualquer posição que você queira melhorar, você tem que se expor a ela. Não adianta só fazer o jogo que você é bom. Na academia você tem que se expor e se colocar naquela posição contra seus colegas de treino, para conseguir melhorar”, encerra Marcel, que também segue invicto no MMA, com três lutas.

Two-time absolute champion of the world Xande Ribeiro was the big standout at the World Professional Championship Trials this Sunday in San Diego, when the weight class finals and the entire course of the absolute division played out. At 31 years of age, Xande proved he’s still got plenty to show in the gentle art, an adversary on par with the likes of Rodolfo Vieira and Roger Gracie. At Point Loma high school gymnasium, Xande won at weight and open weight and looks to be a force to be reckoned with at the main event, in Abu Dhabi. All the following information comes from real-time Twitter postings by Deb Blyth.

In the under-92 kg division, Ribeiro outpointed Rômulo Barral by two points in a match that had the crowd on its feet. In the final of the absolute, Xande came up against André Galvão. Ribeiro took his back, but Galvão drew even at 4-4. Ultimately, three advantage points would hand the win and paid travel to the finals in Abu Dhabi to Xande, who was rewarded with a standing applause.

Galvão was the star of another barn burner, as well. When the Atos ace faced Clark Gracie at the same event last year, André needed a judges’ decision to get the nod. This time, however, a guard pass secured him an unquestionable victory.

In the over-92 kg division, Marcel Fortuna earned his airfare to Abu Dhabi upon defeating Gustavo Elias by 6 to 0. Now in the under-74 kg division, Zack Maxwell took Kron Gracie’s back and managed the advantage that would see him win gold in the weight class. Guilherme Mendes had the stalwart guard of Laércio Fernandes to contend with in the under-65 kg final. Gui ended up winning the lively encounter by 4-2.

In the female light absolute, purple belt Angélica Galvão, André Galvão’s wife, took top spot, with Tracey Goodell in second. Now in the heavy absolute, Emily Wetzel scored 6-2 over Maia Matalon.

Bicampeão mundial absoluto, Xande Ribeiro foi o destaque da Seletiva Para o World Professional Championship (WPJJ), em San Diego, neste domingo, dia das disputas do absoluto e finais de todas as categorias. Aos 31 anos de idade, Xande prova que ainda tem muito a mostrar na arte suave, adversário para bater de frente contra nomes como Rodolfo Vieira e Roger Gracie. No ginásio da escola Point Loma, Xande faturou peso e absoluto e promete vir com força no evento principal, em Abu Dhabi. Todas as informações foram postadas em tempo real através dos twitters da Graciemag (@graciemag e @graciemag_br), com informações da repórter Deb Blyth.

Na categoria 92kg, Ribeiro bateu Rômulo Barral na final ao fazer dois pontos numa luta que levantou a torcida. Na decisão do absoluto, Xande teve André Galvão pela frente. Ribeiro pegou as costas, mas Galvão empatou o placar em 4 a 4. Três vantagens deram o título a Xande, que se emocionou com a galera das arquibancadas, que aplaudiu de pé a garra do campeão.

Galvão também fez bonito na categoria 83kg numa final contra Clark Gracie. No ano passado, o professor da Atos vencera Clar em uma luta duríssima, no mesmo evento, em decisão dos juízes. Desta vez, uma passagem de guarda garantiu o triunfo.

No +92kg, Marcel Fortuna carimbou o passaporte para Abu Dhabi ao derrotar Gustavo Elias por 6 a 0. Já no 74kg, Zak Maxwell surpreendeu Kron Gracie num ataque pelas costas e conseguiu a vantagem e o ouro na categoria. Guilherme Mendes teve a dura guardinha de Laércio Fernandes pela frente na final do 65kg. Numa luta bem movimentada, Gui levou a melhor por 4 a 2.

No feminino absoluto leve, a faixa-roxa Angélica Galvão, esposa de André Galvão, ficou em primeiro, com Tracey Goodell em segundo. Já no absoluto pesado, Emily Wetzel anotou 6 a 2 no placar contra Maia Matalon.

Some of the cream of the world Jiu-Jitsu crop hit the mats this Saturday at the San Diego leg of the World Professional Championship Trials. This Sunday’s action will determine the winners of the weight groups, as well as the absolute, all of whom will travel for tree to compete at the main tournament, this April in Abu Dhabi. Alguns dos grandes expoentes do Jiu-Jitsu mundial estiveram em ação em San Diego, neste sábado, na Seletiva para o World Professional Championship (WPJJ). Neste domingo, serão definidos todos os vencedores das categorias de peso, além do absoluto. Confira quem pega quem nas finais e as fotos do primeiro dia de evento. With the 7th edition of Gustavo Dantas’ Arizona International Open offering up a total of $3000 dollars in prizes for its black belt absolute division, it was bound to attract some formidable athletes from all different areas. Amongst these competitors were names such as Clark Gracie, Marcel Fortuna, Ryan Beauregard, Augusto Moizinho, Carlos Farias, Michael Westbrook, and of course the big winner of the day, Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa.

“Formiga” had quite the journey to face 2011 Southwest Classic champion, Marcel Fortuna, in the finals. Flying in all the way from Boston, the Soul Fighters athlete had to face the largest opponent in the division, first round, Carlos Farias. “Formiga” had a very tough time trying to work with the much larger Farias. In the end Barbosa narrowly pulled off the win, with Farias losing points for stalling. The next round brought about another challenge in last year’s middle weight Worlds bronze medalist, Clark Gracie. “Formiga” accepted the challenge and passed with flying colors; defeating Gracie with an overwhelming score of 10-2.

On the opposite end of the bracket Marcel Fortuna began his march to the finals with a first-round bye, leaving him to face the winner of Augusto Moizinho and Ryan Beauregard in the semifinals. The lighter Moizinho managed to pull off the upset, defeating Beauregard on points. Once the next round came up, the much smaller Augusto put in a great effort against the esteemed Fortuna, but size seemed to be too much of a factor, with Fortuna eventually catching an armbar.

With the finals set, the entire Phoenix College gym sat on edge to await and see the winner of the coveted absolute division. Knowing he had to overcome a large size advantage, “Formiga” came in tough against Fortuna, bringing the action, not only managing to secure a sweep, but also following through on the back to beat the favorite 6-0.

Although losing, Fortuna did not go home empty handed; second place collecting $500. Not to forget the grand champion, “Formiga” seemed very grateful and is sure to put his $2500 prize to good use after leaving the fast growing Arizona Jiu-Jitsu scene.

The maiden San Francisco Open was held this past Sunday in California, and the home team took the cake: Ralph Gracie had a romp and came up in first, with Peninsula BJJ and Gracie Humaitá rounding out the podium.

The big winner of the absolute was GFTeam’s Vitor Henrique, with Samir Chantre in second. Vitor also won the middleweight division, having overcome Marcos Torregrossa in the final.

MÃOZINHA HELPS RALPH GRACIE WIN

The standout at superheavyweight was Marcel “Mãozinha” Fortuna, an athlete on the winning team who took gold after beating James Puopolo (Lovato). Besides the silver, Puopolo also took bronze in the absolute.
