The UFC is venturing for the first time into China and its over-a-billion-strong market, a fraction of which would do heaps for Dana White’s audience. Will the show win over the popular tastes in those parts?

With the main event between former middleweight champion Rich Franklin and Hollywood star Cung Le, the die is cast.

But before the big show can begin, the fighters had to take on another stern opponent: the scale. Official weigh-ins went down this morning, and only Hyun Gyu Lim was unable to make weight. His fight with David Mitchell has now been canceled.

Neste sábado, 10h da manhã, o UFC aporta pela primeira vez na China, na província de Macau. E o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Thiago Silva (14v, 3d) é um dos destaques.

O paulista colecionador de cabeças vai fazer penúltima luta da noite, contra a pedreira búlgara Stanislav Nedkov (12v, 0d), também faixa-preta da arte suave. Thiago vem de duas derrotas e um no contest e precisa de uma boa atuação para continuar prestigiado.

This Saturday, the UFC sets up shop on Chinese soil for the first time. And there, in China-administered Macau, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Thiago Silva (14w, 3l) will be looking to reencounter his winning ways.

The heavy hitter from São Paulo will be starring in the co-main event, facing Bulgaria’s Stanislav Nedkov (12w, 0l), another black belt in the gentle art. Thiago is coming off back-to-back losses and a no contest and is in dire need of a win to steer his career back on course.

For the first and, according to UFC president Dana White, the only time ever, the fans picked who would take home the “Fight of the Night” bonus check. The fans spoke, and the participants in evening’s main event, Georges Saint-Pierre and Josh Koscheck, pocketed the hefty sum of one hundred thousand dollars, each. Mac Danzig earned the same amount for the “Knockout of the Night” bonus, for first-round finish over Joe Stevenson.

Now the “Submission of the Night” was divided between two Jiu-Jitsu black belts, with Marc Bocek and Jim Miller each rewarded fifty thousand dollars for their wins over Dustin Hazelett and Charles do Bronx, respectively.

E os contemplados com a bonificação maior de toda a história do evento foram Georges St. Pierre e Josh Koscheck, em luta vencida pelo primeiro, eleita a melhor da noite. Seguindo as premiações do UFC 124, que aconteceu neste sábado, em Montreal, Mac Danzig ficou com o nocaute da noite, aplicado em Joe Stevenson.

Já Marc Bocek and Jim Miller dividiram o prêmio pela finalização da noite, com vitórias, respectivamente, em cima de Dustin Hazelett e Charles do Bronx.

In the main event of this Saturday’s UFC 124 event in Montreal, Georges St.-Pierre successfully defended his welterweight crown against Josh Koscheck, but there were other bouts on the card were cause for excitement, too.

Georges Saint-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck

St.-Pierre stamped his authority on the bout. He wreaked havoc on Koscheck while still in the first round, leaving the challenger’s right eye swollen. GSP followed up with effective jabs and kicks, and whenever opportunity knocked, he took Josh to the ground. In the interval before the third round the doctor wanted to stop the bout, but Koscheck urged to continue. The Canadian continued to dominate the bout until the end, winning by unanimous decision, successfully defending the welterweight belt and notching his eighth win in a row.

Sean McCorkle vs. Stefan Struve

McCorkle started out on top: he got the takedown and caused some discomfort with a kimura. But Stefan Struve escaped and proved why he was favored to win, sweeping, mounting, and pounding away until the referee intervened, all in the first round.

Jim Miller vs. Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira

Charles started out well with some solid kicking, but Jim Miller quickly took it to the ground. There, Miller showed what his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu is worth, defending a number of attacks and finishing up with a kneebar just two minutes into the first round. The result put an end to Bronx’s fourteen-fight invincibility and notched Miller his sixth win in a row, putting him on course for a lightweight title challenge.

Mac Danzig vs. Joe Stevenson

The fight was evenly matched, with Joe Stevenson slightly ahead. However, Mac Danzig landed a solid left that laid Stevenson out. A few strikes later, the referee had no choice but to stop the action, while still in the first round.

Thiago “Pitbull” Alves vs. John Howard

Pitbull dominated the entire fight against John Howard, landing a number of strikes, sightly knees, and kicks to the leg. In the second round, the American Top team rep moved ahead with a takedown that took his opponent and the crowd off their feet. A knockdown in the third sealed his victory via unanimous decision. The win was quite a relief for the Brazilian, who had been seeing negative results.

In the preliminary action, Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida returned to his winning ways against T.J. Grant. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt landed good takedowns over three rounds and arrived at advantageous positions, like the mount. The performance earned him a unanimous decision in his favor. Now Cachorrão’s teammate Rafael Sapo and opponent Jesse Bongfeldt fought to a draw. Mark Bocek didn’t need long to put away Dustin Hazelett, with a triangle choke after just two minutes and thirty-three seconds.

Aconteceu neste sábado, em Montreal, o UFC 124. Na principal luta da noite, Georges St.Pierre defendeu com sucesso o cinturão de meio-médios contra Josh Koscheck, mas muitas outras lutas do card foram boas.

Georges St. Pierre x Josh Koscheck

St. Pierre dominou amplamente o combate. Ainda no round inicial, já havia castigado bastante Josh Koscheck, que ficou com o olho direito bem inchado. GSP seguiu variando muito bem com jabs certeiros e chutes. Quando possível, também aplicou boas quedas em Josh. No intervalo do terceiro round, o médico quis parar o combate, mas Koscheck pediu para prosseguir. A luta seguiu com domínio do canadense que, com a decisão unânime da arbitragem, defendeu mais uma vez com êxito o cinturão de meio-médios e chegou à oitava vitória seguida.

Sean McCorkle x Stefan Struve

McCorkle começou melhor: quedou e incomodou com uma chave kimura. Mas Stefan Struve escapou do golpe e fez valer o favoritismo. O holandês raspou, montou e socou até o árbitro intervir, ainda no assalto inicial.

Jim Miller x Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira

Charles começou bem, com bons chutes, mas Jim Miller logo quedou. Ao chão, Miller mostrou o valor da sua faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu. Defendeu diversos ataques e definiu com uma leglock a 1min59s do primeiro assalto. O resultado acabou com a invencibilidade do Bronx, que durava 14 lutas. Já Miller chegou à sexta vitória seguida, rumo ao cinturão de leves.

Mac Danzig x Joe Stevenson

A luta vinha equilibrada, até com certa vantagem para Joe Stevenson. Entretanto, Mac Danzig acertou um forte golpe de esquerda que derrubou Stevenson de bruços. Alguns socos depois, só restou ao árbitro intervir, ainda no assalto inicial.

Thiago “Pitbull” Alves x John Howard

Pitbull dominou toda a luta contra Howard, tendo conectado diversos socos, boas joelhadas e chutes nas pernas. No segundo round, o representante da American Top Team abriu vantagem com uma queda que levantou o adversário e a torcida em Montreal. Por fim, um knockdown na tercaira parcial confirmou a vitória, por decisão unânime. Bom para o brasileiro, que vinha de dois resultados negativos.

Nas lutas preliminares, Ricardo Almeida, o Cachorrão, voltou a vencer contra T.J. Grant. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu conseguiu aplicar boas quedas nos três rounds e conquistou posições de vantagem, como a montada. O desempenho valeu a decisão unânime a seu favor. Já o companheiro de equipe de Cachorrão Rafael Sapo e o oponente Jesse Bongfeldt empataram. Mark Bocek não precisou de muito tempo para bater Dustin Hazelett. Com um triângulo, finalizou em apenas 2min33s.
