Long Beach, Calif. held early this month the IBJJF’s Long Beach Open, featuring many top-tier athletes.

A brave Josh Hinger was the name of the event. With a history of fighting in both adults’ and masters’ sections in IBJJF tournaments, this time he mixed it up with the younger folk to great effect. The American bagged double gold, with his most interesting play happening in the fight for medium heavyweight gold.

Fighting Gabriel Almeida (Checkmat), Josh was predominantly on top. However, as he rid himself of the tangle, the Atos black-belt managed to impose his game and end up on the mount. In the final minutes, in order to secure the win, Josh dove with his head to trap Gabriel’s arm in a kata-gatame and made a quick move with his legs to leave the mount for the side with a knee on his opponent’s belly, applying pressure from multiple angles to conclude the fight.

A cidade de Long Beach, na Califórnia, recebeu no início deste mês de novembro o Long Beach Open da IBJJF, com diversos atletas de ponta do Jiu-Jitsu internacional.

Na categoria adulto faixa-preta, o nome da vez foi do valente Josh Hinger. Com atuações mistas entre masters e adultos nos torneios da IBJJF, para o Long Beach Open Josh se jogou na divisão de elite, e o resultado veio. O americano venceu tanto no peso quanto no absoluto, mas o lance mais interessante veio pelo ouro no meio-pesado.

No duelo contra Gabriel Almeida (Checkmat), Josh ficou predominantemente por cima, embolado nas pernas do brasileiro casca-grossa. Contudo, ao se livrar do enrosco, o faixa-preta da Atos conseguiu impor seu jogo e terminar montado. Nos minutos finais, para garantir a vitória, Josh mergulhou a cabeça para prender o braço de Gabriel no kata-gatame, e fez uma jogada rápida de pernas para sair da montada para a lateral com o joelho na barriga, impondo pressão de vários ângulos para concluir o arrocho.

The Internacional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) will host this Sunday the 11th in Long Beach, CA the first Jiu-Jitsu Charity Day (JJCD). The event will take place alongside the Kids International and the Long Beach International Open. All of the proceeds from these drives will be donated to UNICEF.

– IBJJF will be auctioning on eBay Gis, shirts, and hats signed by Black Belt World Champions, who are role models of the sport;

– Athletes are asked to bring 1 pound/piece of non perishable food in exchange for the athlete’s shirt. We will make a donation to the LA Food Bank;

– The organization will work alongside volunteers to enrich the event by involving the community with the cause, creating an event of unlimited proportions for the years to come;

– IBJJF will be organizing seminars of prestigious professors, in which the registration fees will be entirely donated to UNICEF.

The tournament featured established names in the gentle art and reveled new talents like Andris Brunovskis (Atos).

The black belt novice submitted the experienced Wellington “Megaton” Dias (Gracie Humaita) with a choke coming from an Omoplata attack in the lightweight final. Check it out:

Uma das atrações da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo no último domingo foi o Long Beach Open de Jiu-Jitsu. Se muitos dos maiores faixas-pretas entraram na Pro League no mesmo dia ou fizeram superlutas na noite anterior, o torneio paralelo contou com alguns fortes nomes da elite.

No absoluto faixa-preta, Eduardo Alves de Inojosa (Cícero Costha) foi o grande campeão. Após finalizar Vitor Paschoal com uma kimura, Eduardo foi para a final com Carlos Eduardo Faria.

Com um atuação sólida, o faixa-preta meteu 19 a 0 em Faria.

No peso-pena, a final opôs Gustavo Dantas e Vitor Paschoal. No começo da luta, Dantas tentou puxar enquanto ambos saíam do tatame. De volta ao centro, Gustavo puxou de novo e acelerou o ritmo, ensaiando uma rápida raspagem sobre a cabeça que lhe deu uma vantagem. Voltaram de pé e, quando Vitor tentou puxar, Gustavo deu um tiro simultâneo, ganhando dois pontos. Daí, Vitor fez sua guarda e trabalhou para chegar às costas. Gustavo manteve seu equilíbrio e defendeu as costas enquanto Vitor lutava por uma raspagem. Gustavo saiu da posição e ficou na guarda de Vitor. O árbitro deu dois pontos para Vitor perto do fim, e Gustavo recebeu uma advertência e uma punição por amarrar. Gustavo foi campeão por duas vantagens.

A categoria leve foi vencida por Andris Brunovskis, novo faixa-preta da Atos. A decisão foi entre o novato e o experiente favorito, Wellington “Megaton” Dias. Andris puxou para a guarda de imediato, fechou-a e trabalhou a omoplata. Depois de encaixada a omoplata, Megaton defendeu-se bem, mas acabou batendo num estrangulamento.

O meio-pesado teve apenas a final entre Romulo Azevedo e Ricardo Wagner de Oliveira. Ricardo puxou para a guarda e ensaiou ataques aos pés, mas Romulo se defendeu bem. Ele subiu para uma raspagem, mas Romulo defendeu – até respondendo com suas próprias tentativas de passar. Ricardo encaixou uma chave de perna reta que não bastou para finalizar. A contagem final foi de 6 vantagens a 2 a favor de Romulo.

Dois americanos se encontraram na final do pesado: Morris Ayala e Jason Ackerman. Morris começou sendo raspado, mas passou a guarda repetidamente. Ainda buscou armlocks, mas a boa defesa de Jason o frustrou. Ao fim do tempo regulamentar, Morris havia feito 24 a 2.

A main feature of the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo on Sunday, Oct. 19 was the 2014 IBJJF Long Beach International Open. While many of the top black belts entered the Pro League on the same day or had their own superfights on the previous night, the Long Beach Open called upon some top names as well.

Overall, the team points were earned as follows:

1 – Brazilian Top Team – 277
2 – Jean Jacques Machado BJJ – 169
3 – Atos Jiu-Jitsu – 149

In the featherweight division, the final came down to BJJ mental coach Gustavo Dantas and Caio Terra Association’s Vitor Paschoal. At the beginning of the match Gustavo attempted a pull as they two went out of bounds and as they reset to the center, Gustavo pulled again and pushed to pace attempting a quick overhead sweep that earned an advantage. They reset standing and as Vitor attempted a pull, Gustavo shot in at the same time to earn two points. From there, Vitor played his guard and worked to get to the back. Gustavo held his balance and defended his back well while Vitor fought to earn his sweep or backtake. Eventually Gustavo got out of the position and stayed in Vitor’s guard. The referee awarded Vitor two points near the end of the match as Gustavo was given warning and penalty for stalling. Gustavo won the match by two advantages.

Lightweight category was won by new Atos black belt Andris Brunovskis. The final was between the new guy and the long-time favorite, Wellington Megaton Dias. Andris pulled guard right away, closed it and worked for an omoplata. After securing the omoplata, Megaton defended well but ultimately tapped to a choke from the crucifix.

The medium-heavyweight category was only a final between Romulo Azevedo and Ricardo Wagner de Oliveira. The match was a close one, only decided by advantages. Ricardo pulled guard and attempted foot attacks but Romulo defended well. He came up for a sweep but Romulo defended, even countering with pass attempts as well. Ricardo locked on a kneebar but it wasn’t enough to submit Romulo. The final score was 6-2 advantages for Romulo.

Two Americans met in the final of the heavyweight category, Morris Ayala and Jason Ackerman. The match began in Jason’s favor as he stood up and earned a sweep and the two points lead. But Morris swept back and his pressure proved to work well. Morris pushed to top half and was able to pass repeatedly via knee slice and he attempted armbars but wasn’t able to submit Jason who defended well. Morris made his way to mount a couple times which racked up the points. By the end of the match as time expired, Morris had outscored Jason 24-2 for the gold.

Eduardo Alves de Inojosa defeated Romulo Azevedo by injury when a takedown hurt Romulo’s arm.
Vitor Paschoal defeated Jimmy Tat by choke from the back.
Eliot Kelly defeated Nicollas Welker by 2-2 points, 4-2 advantages.
Eduardo defeats Vitor with a kimura.
Carlos Eduardo Faria defeats Eliot with a choke from side control.
Eduardo defeats Carlos by 19-0 points.

Faixa-preta desde 2011, André Campos fechou a temporada 2013 com dois ouros na Califórnia, no Long Beach Open da IBJJF, último grande torneio da Federação em 2013.

O atleta da Gracie Barra, que tem como ídolo Roger Gracie, gosta de se inspirar no seu professor, Gustavo, “um peso pesado com agilidade de peso leve”.

No Long Beach Open, André finalizou Leonardo D’Ávila (Atos) para conquistar o peso superpesado, e no absoluto fechou com o parceiro William Martins, fera treinada por Zé Radiola.

O atleta explicou como fez para vencer a final do peso: “O Léo começou puxando para a guarda, trabalhou um pouco a meia-guarda e consegui passar. Dali eu finalizei com um estrangulamento dos cem-quilos”.

Besides the 2013 BJJ Pro League, the sunday of Jiu-Jitsu in the Pyramid also featured the Long Beach Fall Open.

In the event that gathered close to 500 athletes, Gracie Barra’s Andre Campos was the main name.

He won both the adult black belt super-heavy and the open class.
